Ernest GENTIL Frédéric Le Play
[Click Below for Full Description]

Hamburg: City Council, 1835. Loose leaf. vg. Elephant Folio broadside (15 1/3 x 12 3/4"). Original gray broadside with black lettering and emblem of City of Hamburg. The proclamation translated below was printed and posted around Hamburg after riots against its Jewish Citizens had broken out on July 31, 1835 and spread on the following day, August 1st 1835. The tone of the proclamation tries to accomplish two things: First, to downplay the incidents and calm the Hamburg population treating this disorderly conduct not as a major event, and second, to show determination towards anybody who doesn't revert to peaceful measures to solve the misgivings. Although it is issued specifically due to the anti-Jewish riots, it does not mention that the riots were anti-Jewish protests. "Proclamation (Bekanntmachung / our translation from the original) The horseplay and mischief taking place on the evening before yesterday in the Alster Hall, spread yesterday evening, leading to crimes on some other streets of the New City, and a repetition will not be tolerated. Therefore all milling around on the Jungfernstieg, alleys and open places, as well as noise and roaming around in hordes, is forbidden and will be punished severely, and these hordes will be disbursed. If the mischief in the Alster Hall or any similar establishments will start again, the guests will be asked to leave, the culprits will be arrested, and the establishment will be closed. The honorable council is optimistic, considering the often shown good will of local citizens, that the measures taken to uphold the peace … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tocqueville, Alexis de
Charles Gosselin, Paris, 1835. Two volumes bound in one. [4],xxiv,367; [4],459pp. plus hand-colored folding map. Half title in each volume. Contemporary French marbled paper boards, gilt morocco label. Minor shelf wear, some rubbing to boards. Moderate toning, stamp removed from titlepage and margin of one text leaf in first volume. Very good. The first edition of the first part of Tocqueville's famous classic, DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA, one of the most famous investigations of the American political system. Alexis de Tocqueville came to the United States in the spring of 1831, accompanied by his friend and fellow student, Gustave de Beaumont. Their original goal was to study the penitentiary system of the United States. After visiting prisons in the East they undertook a tour of the South as far as New Orleans, ascended the Mississippi, visited the Great Lakes and Canada, and returned via New York, having travelled for nine months. After writing their report on prisons, Tocqueville began work on the first part of DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA in 1833-34 and published it, in an edition of less than 500 copies, in January 1835. The book was an instant success, and numerous editions, many with revisions, followed quickly, and the second part, first published in April 1840, was issued concurrently with the eighth edition of the first part. There were probably more than fifty editions in English and French published before 1900, besides numerous other translations. Almost from the beginning Tocqueville's study enjoyed the reputation of being the most acute and perceptive discussion of the po … [Click Below for Full Description]

Just ask! 1835 EXQUISITE John Milton Paradise Lost Complete Works Turner Art Eng 6v SET "The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven." ― John Milton, Paradise Lost A charming collection of John Milton's works including 'Paradise Lost' and 'Paradise Regain'd' among his other poetry and writings. These beautiful books are filled with full-page engravings by J M W Turner depicting the characters of Milton's most famous works. 'Paradise Lost' was critically acclaimed and well-received by many famed personalities, including Samuel Johnson who states. "[Paradise Lost shows] Milton's peculiar power to astonish...and he seems to have been well acquainted with his own genius, and to know what it was the Nature had bestowed upon him more bountifully than upon others: the power of displaying the vast, illuminating the splendid, enforcing the awful, darkening the gloomy, and aggravating the dreadful. Current Christian writer at the time C.S. Lewis, also interpreted Milton's landmark poem as a 'genuine Christian morality tale' (Leonard) Speaking of this 6-volume collection the Metropolitan Magazine of 1835 says, "In all the extrinsics of a book, these volumes leave us nothing to wish for... we do not know of any edition at once so convenient for general use, and worthy to occupy a place on the literary shelf, in rank with the well-bound classics of all countries." 1835. [Railroads, Topography, Transportation] ~ [WOODWARD, Samuel] The Barclay Tract in Pennsylvania: Surveyed & Described by Samuel Rhoads Jr. 1835 [s.i.]. [s.n.], [1835]. Folio. Manuscript on paper. [2], 25pp, [2], with eight further blank leaves. With a hand-illustrated and coloured folding plan of the Barclay Tract. Contemporary red half-morocco, marbled boards, gilt. Extremities rubbed. Later armorial bookplate of Henry Birkbeck to FEP, short tear to centre fold of map, very occasional light spotting. A manuscript account of the environs of the Barclay Tract, a coal mining operation within the township of Franklin, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Undertaken by Quaker Samuel Rhoads Jr., this survey is comprised of three letters descriptive of the topography of the area embellished with a hand-illustrated plan depicting those land parcels that have been cultivated, and those devoted to mining activity. Rhoads, writing from Blockley, Philadelphia, addresses railroad pioneer and fellow Quaker Joseph Pease (1799-1872) who seemingly commissioned Rhoads to conduct the review in order to ascertain whether the land was suitable for connection to the existing rail network. An extract from a Railroad report read in the House of Commons 20th March 1835 provides distances of the nearby Williamsport & Elmira Railway, and the details of a proposed line between New York and Lake Erie. The letters were copied by, and under the care of, published East-Anglian historian and geologist Samuel Woodward (1790-1838). Figured cloth with leather spine label ("Tour in the North of Europe 1835"). 233 closely and neatly written pages, mostly written on one side of each leaf (although it varies between recto and verso), bound with nicely engraved letterheads and illustrations of the various locales visited and described, some are hand colored, also with a folding hand-colored map of Denmark published by Thomas Kelly in London, 1834 (see below). All illustrations on unnumbered pages. Modest wear to the spine label, text block fallen slightly forward, and hinges partially split, still a nice, very good or better volume, with the interior fine. Authorial Signature of Capt. Kelly dated January 1835. Kelly, about whom we could find little, traveled with "my usual traveling companion Alderman Kelly" on the John Bull Steam Packet to Hamburg. This is followed by a thorough description of their activities and of each of the many localities they visited, with exceptionally detailed remarks on travel, the geography, architecture, population, the paintings and other art displayed in the churches, palaces, and museums, the hotels and their cuisine (or lack of it), weather, observations, and entertainments by the various British consuls. Capt. Kelly's companion, born Thomas Kelly (1772-1855), was according to at least one source, "a Dick Whittington character," a man who had risen from modest beginnings to be Lord Mayor of London and a respected Alderman. After his father's bankruptcy, in about 1788, Kelly was sent to work at Hoggs, the publisher and bookseller, on Pa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Maire, N.M.
1835. Early 19th century map of the suburbs of Paris, from Montmorency in the north to Vissons and Villeneuve in the south, and from St. Germain and Versailles in the west to Noisy-le-Grand in the east, with towns and sites including chateaux and parks marked with short captions and elevations. Very minor toning along creases. 16mo. Boards. Abrasions, rubbing, loss to paper along spine, some splitting to boards, pen notation to inside front cover. Paris (Rosselin) 1835. Not much is known about the biography of N.M. Maire. In 1808, he self-published "La topographie de Paris, ou, Plan détaillé de la ville de Paris et de ses faubourgs", a small city atlas of 20 maps and 104 pages of listings of streets, public offices, hotels, hospitals, and other points of interest. Circa 1821 he published the first edition of his "Atlas administratif de Paris", with fourteen copies of the same map of Paris, each devoted to a specific subject including lighting districts, markets, sewers, and firefighting districts. Very scarce; although WorldCat has listings for an earlier and later version of this map, as of December 2017 we were not able to locate a single listing for the 1835 edition. CROCKETT, Davy
E.L. Carey and A. Hart. 1835 1st ed Davy Crockett American Tour Politics anti Andrew Jackson Alamo Folk I know, that obscure as I am, my name is making a considerable deal of fuss in the world. Davy Crockett Davy Crockett is often regarded as the most famous American folk hero of the 19th-century. Best remembered for his involvement in the Battle of the Alamo, Crockett was also an accomplished politician. Beginning in 1834, Crockett took a political tour of the American North, visiting major cities of Philadelphia, New York, and Boston, in hopes of gaining support for re-election to Congress. The work contains Crockett s own records and observations of his trip, most of it was political, boosting his re-election campaign as well as the Whig cause in General. [The author] included no less than ten repetitions of Crockett s anti-Andrew Jackson speech in various forms as delivered on the tour. (Groneman, p.) COOPER, James Fenimore (1789-1851
1835. One page, square 12mo (114 x 104 mm), a few pale stains, one short separation along fold. Item #403588 Cooper apparently returns a copy of a translation of Frithiof's saga, or The legend of Frithiof by Esaias Tegner (London, 1835), edited and translated in part by Frye: "My dear Major, I send back the Danes, big and little, Swedes, 'pioneers and all.' We think 'Frithiof' a striking poem, and owe you an especial notice for having translated it into any other than your mother tongue. With many thanks and constant good wishes, I am my dear Major, yours very truly J. Fenimore Coooper. Do you see the republicans were like to get the republic of Frankfurt. What a thing is a name." It is known that Herman Melville read Frithiof's saga, and it fits that Cooper too would look to other epics in the process of writing his own of America.

HILL, John (1770-1850, engraver) and Joshua H. SHAW (1776-1860, artist)
published by Thos. T. Ash, Philadelphia, 1835. Aquatint by Hill after Shaw, coloured by hand. One small repair to lower blank margin, otherwise good. In fine French washline mat. A rare example of a print from an extremely rare work that is now considered to be a "milestone in American printmaking . a foundation book for American color-plate publication, being the first publication in the United States of larger colored landscapes essentially scenic in effect" (Koke). This fine image of livestock and people on the banks of the Wisahiccon is from a suite of twenty plates published under the general title 'Picturesque Views of American Scenery'. The original intention had been to publish 36 plates in six parts but the work was abandoned after only four parts had appeared (published primarily by Matthew Carey & Son). Thomas Ash acquired the rights to the set and republished them in 1835. Any examples from either edition are now rare. Joshua Shaw, a British-born landscape artist of note, was inspired by the magificence of the American landscape ("in no other quarter of the globe are the majesty and loveliness of nature more strikingly conspicuous than in America."). Shaw set out to popularise the picturesque in America. His beautiful images were skillfully interpreted by engraver John Hill and the results can rightly be said to have been one of the elements which led to the growth of what became the Hudson River School of landscape painting. The popularity of the Hudson River School from the mid-1820s onwards, paid dividends for Shaw's work as well and Thomas Ash was encouraged … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vere Monro
ont> Richard Bentley: London. Ont> Richard Bentley: London, 1835 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. The desirable first edition of Vere Monro's travel documents of Syria, visiting places mentioned in the Bible and noting their condition and culture in the early nineteenth century. Illustrated with a frontispiece to each volume. The first edition of this work. Complete in two volumes. This work is a fascinating study into Syria in the early nineteenth century, looking in depth at the character and culture of the country, at a time when England's interest in the Middle East was rising. In particular, the author wished to see and document the condition of the places hallowed by Spiritual writings. Documents the author's travels to the banks of the Nile, Damietta, and Jerusalem, where he visited places mentioned in the Bible as scenes of remarkable events. Though this work wasn't noted for adding any new information to the existing travel works of the time, it has been acknowledged that the author's story telling abilities make for a great adventurous work, and thus makes it an excellent addition to a travel library. Monro's writing style in this work was applauded for being lively and conversational. Written from the perspective of a Western person travelling, thus showing ideology typical to the time. Each volume with the rarely seen half-title. With a lithographic frontispiece to each volume. Reverend Vere Monro was a well travelled man, having visited Spain, Italy, Greece, Egypt, and Ethiopia. He entered University College Oxford in 1819, and graduated with an MA in … [Click Below for Full Description]

SIR JAMES EDWARD SMITH & JAMES SOWERBY
1835. I have here for sale 6 volumes of ENGLISH BOTANY OR COLOURED FIGURES OF BRITISH PLANTS, with their Essential Characters, Synonyms, and Places of Growth by Sir James Edward Smith, the figures by James Sowerby. They are the 2nd edition published in 1835 by C E Sowerby, London. Each volume has approx 180 full page hand coloured plates at the rear of the book preceded by notes on each one. I have Vols II-VII which have in total 1214 colour plates which you could sell individually if you wanted. The plates in these volumes run from 194 through to 1407. In 1790, Sowerby began the first of several huge projects: a 36-volume work, English Botany that was published over the next 23 years, contained 2,592 hand-coloured engravings and became known as Sowerby's Botany. An enormous number of plants were to receive their first formal publication within this work, but the authority for these came from the initially unattributed text written by James Edward Smith. The work was continued by his son, James de Carle Sowerby who published a further set of 204 plates, mostly uncoloured until the end of the first edition in 1835. Further plates were added by other hands up to 1865 ending with plate number 2,999. Half green calf leather on green cloth hardboards. 5 raised bands with gilt decals and lettering to the spines. A few scuffs to corners but binding is firm and good quality. A very handsome set. Pugin, Augustus Welby.
1835. London: Ackermann, Weale, and Dolman, 1835-1851. 7 vols. in 2, large 4to, bound in full green and full red morocco, very richly stamped in gold and with onlays in green on the red volume, and the green volume with the Order of the Garter device on both covers; boards bevelled (red volume) or rolled (green volume), backstrips richly gilt, all edges on both volumes deeply gauffred. In virtually flawless condition. Full collations and plate counts as per Fowler (see below). § An absolutely astonishing collection of all but one of Pugin's major works, perhaps his own copies bound for him in unsigned bindings of the very highest quality and with his name stamped at the foot of the backstrip of the red volume. The later bookplate of Samuel Joshua Cooper is pasted in both volumes over an earlier bookplate (perhaps Pugin's?). The only significant volume not present is his controversial book "Contrasts", privately issued in 1836. For detailed descriptions of each volume see Fowler 264, 261, 263, 262, 266, 268, and 272. The Bookpress suggests that the first four works were in fact issued together; perhaps the remaining three also were, as they were certainly reprinted together later by Bohn. Weinreb confirms that in his monumental "The Arts Applied" (1975).
