Spencer, O.M.
Carlton & Porter, New York 1835 - 16mo, orig. brown cloth over greenish marbled bds, a very unsophisticated copy; no titles visible, cloth on spine worn and partially torn over hinges, bds extensively rubbed, worn at corners and along edges, volume shaken but hinges still holding; yellow eps with light soil and staining, paper over hinges torn in spots but holding; internally there are numerous light watermarks, some spots of light foxing, none of which badly affect legibility of text or plates; several small nicks or short edge tears to pages without loss of text; 4 full pg wood engravings and another 4 in-text illus; pp.158,2(contents); no dj, volume protected in new grey silk-covered hard clamshell case with gold-on-blue paper label. An extremely scarce New York printing of Spencer's "Indian Captivity," which Howes describes as possibly the earliest of any, although there may have been one in PA the same year. No date on tp, but this volume meets the criteria for the first. The intro. is dated December, 1834 and no other printings mentioned. Howes calls for 5 paginated plates while this copy has 4, but there are no gaps in pagination. Four unpaginated illustrations are present. There are almost no copies available earlier than the Lakeside Press edition, which is not inexpensive. Despite its rather shabby appearance, this volume will endure many more careful explorations and its new clamshell case is very attractive and protective. Howes S-835. Pritzel 1835; STCN (7 copies); D.O. Wijnands, Botany of the Commelins, 1983, p. 13. Third enlarged edition of a catalogue of medicinal plants at the Hortus Medicus in Amsterdam, containing 441 numbered descriptions. It is the last of three editions produced by Commelin (1667/68-1731), whose uncle Jan Commelin had been the garden's botanist to his death in 1692. Caspar was appointed to the same post in 1695 and professor of botany in 1706. The title-page is undated, but the preliminaries contain both Commelin's 1698 note to the reader from the first edition and his new note to the reader dated 15 March 1724 for the present edition. The garden's new entry gate was built in 1715 and Goeree engraved the present frontispiece showing it for the second edition of Commelin's catalogue, published in that year. This work should not be confused with Commelin's Hortus medici Amstelodamensis plantae rariores et exoticae, 1706, a supplement to his uncle's Hortus medici Amstelodamensis rariorum tam orientalis, 1697-1701.With library stamp. Lacking the second of the 2 final blank leaves. In good condition. Most extensive edition of Commelin's catalogue of medicinal plants in the Amsterdam botanical garden. [Attributes: First Edition]
