Mrs. Maria Rundell
Andrus & Judd, 1835. Later printing. [2], [3]-216 pages. Nine plates including frontispiece and additional engraved title page. Engraved title page has a different title: "The American Domestic Cookery by a Lady" with woodcut of a steer and list of meat cuts with same publisher information. Period leather binding with blindstamped decorations front and rear. Simple gilt tooling and embellishments on the spine. Overall wear, light browning and foxing throughout. Piece missing from front blank flyleaf. A nice, unsophisticated example. Very Good. Boards. We find two things charming about this book. One - and we love this - it smells(appropriately) like a smoky open hearth!! Second, the embossed design on the front and rear covers was stamped on the front twice. If it were a coin (double-die) it would be worth a fortune. But here it also offeres some insight into the binding process - the front and rear panels were blindstamped with a single tool which would have required considerable pressure in a press. And material costs being what they were, the leather double strike was allowed rather than discarded, an interesting decision by the binder. Lowenstein notes in earlier editions of her bibliography (but not in the latest 3rd edition) that this work was based on the same title, published in 1823 (#95), and that earlier entry contained a note that this work was taken from Mrs. Rundell's 'A new system of domestic cookery." While not present in the 3rd edition, we've chosen to retain this attribution, assuming that the renumbering that Lowenstein did for the third edition of the b … [Click Below for Full Description]

BAMFORD, Samuel.
Manchester: Printed for the author, by J. P. Jennings and H. Cowdroy, 1834 [i.e. 1835]. Octavo. Original boards. 19th-century bookplate of George Shaw to front pastedown. A little worn at extremities, contents lightly browned, flower inserted between pp. 18/19. A very good copy. First edition of this collection of the poetry, some here printed for the first time, by the English radical Samuel Bamford (1788-1872). The title refers to his time in prison ("bowers" being slang for jail), and Bamford notes that he wrote two of the poems while incarcerated - "Eclogue" and "Hymn to Hope". Bamford makes clear in the preface his feeling, written in the third person, that "he has been confined in a greater number of English Prisons, for the cause of freedom, (by which he means reform,) than any other Englishman living". Many of the poems display the same political radicalism which led to his imprisonment, although the poems are by no means especially incendiary, and also include ditties to his beloved. 1835. 16.5x22.6; 15.6x22.3cm. Two pencil drawings mounted on plain paper with date and title captioned in English. A very good condition. Unidentified artist (signature E.C. in the left bottom corner). Rare historical evidence of one of the most famous fires in the 19th century England. The views of the destruction of both Houses of Parliament from Abington and Surrey side on the night of the 16th October 1834. One of the most disastrous fires in the history of England was caused by the unsupervised burning of two large cartloads of wooden tally sticks (a form of medieval tax receipt) in the heating furnaces. Warning signs were persistently ignored by the Housekeeper and Clerk of Works, and the Prime Minister would later declare the catastrophe, 'one of the greatest instances of stupidity upon record'. A huge fireball exploded out of the building at around 6.30pm, immediately attracting hundreds of thousands of people. The conflagration was fought by parish engines, insurance companies and the private London Fire Engine Establishment. Hundreds of volunteers, including MPs and Peers, staffed the pumps on the night, and were paid in beer for their efforts. The fire lasted for most of the night and destroyed a large part of the palace, including the converted St Stephen's Chapel - the meeting place of the House of Commons - the Lords Chamber, the Painted Chamber and the official residences of the Speaker and the Clerk of the House of Commons. PUSHKIN, Alexander Sergeyevich.
St Petersburg Military Press, 1835. First edition; in two parts this being part one; 8vo (20 x 12 cm); somewhat waterstained and fore-edge soiled, skilful restoration to a few pages including the tite-page, a small clean tear to p.129; doublure with silk endpapers, modern green morocco, gilt detail to spine and covers. first edition of one of the rarest lifetime collections of Pushkin's narrative poems This edition includes Pushkin's earliest narrative poems: Ruslan and Ludmila, The Prisoner of the Caucasus and The Fountain of Bakhchisaray. These works had already been published separately but the assembly of three such popular poems into one volume priced at 20 roubles was eagerly anticipated as it was much more affordable. Its success in subsequent years meant that according to Smirnov-Solkolskii most copies were 'destroyed by sheer use'. This explains its rarity both on the antique market and in international institutions. The two volumes were published four months apart and not sold together, therefore the volumes are not likely to be found in a set. William Apes
Boston Mass: Jonathan Howe. Rare Antique Native American History Book "THE MARSHPEE TRIBE" 1835 The Pretended Riot Explained. Antique Book by Author William Apes. Published by Jonathan Howe in Boston Mass. Book measures 7" X 4 1/2" See all pictures for Condition. Book was found in a underground NYC/Park Ave safe vault with a Picasso boy with pipe painting. William Apess (1798-1839, Pequot) (also known as William Apes before 1837), was an ordained methodist minister, writer, and activist of Mixed race descent, who was a political and religious leader in Massachusetts. After becoming ordained as a Methodist minister in 1829, he published his autobiography the same year. It is among the first autobiographies by a Native American writer. Apess was part Pequot by descent, especially through his mother's family, and identified with their culture. In 1833, while serving as an itinerant preacher in New England, Apess visited the Mashpee on Cape Cod. Hearing their grievances against white overseers and settlers who stole their wood, he helped organize what was called the Mashpee Revolt of 1833-34. Their attempt to regain civil rights was covered sympathetically by the Boston Advocate, but criticized by local journals on Cape Cod. Apess published a book about the experience in 1835, which he summarized as "Indian Nullification." Apess alienated many of his supporters before dying in New York City at age 41, but he has been described as "perhaps the most successful activist on behalf of Native American rights in the antebellum United States.

Morgenstern, Christian Ernst Bernhard - (1805 Hamburg - München 1867)
Aquarell über Bleistift, um 1835, auf cremefarbenem Velin. 24,5:40,4 cm. QUETELET, Lambert Adolphe Jacques.
Paris: Bachelier, 1835. First edition. First edition of Quetelet's principal work in which he presented his conception of the homme moyen ("average man") as the central value about which measurements of a human trait are grouped according to the normal distribution (this was the first time the normal distribution had been used other than as an error law). "With Quetelet's work of 1835 a new era in statistics began. It presented a new technique of statistics, or, rather, the first technique at all. The material was thoughtfully elaborated, arranged according to certain pre-established principles, and made comparable. There were not very many statistical figures in the book, but each figure reported made sense. For every number, Quetelet tried to find the determining influences, its natural causes, and the perturbations caused by man. The work gave a description of the average man as both a static and dynamic phenomenon. This work was a tremendous achievement, but Quetelet had aimed at a much higher goal: social physics, as the subtitle of the work said; the same title under which, since 1825, Comte had taught what he later called sociology. Terms and analogies borrowed from mechanics played a great part in Quetelet's theoretical explanation. To find the laws that govern the social body, one has to do what one does in physics: to observe a large number of cases and then take averages. Quetelet's average man became a slogan in nineteenth-century discussions on social science" (DSB). "A rare, three-part review in the Athenaeum concluded by remarking: 'We consider the appearance … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leopardi, Giacomo
[Saverio Starita], 1835. [Click Below for Full Description]

".Ethiopia, above the second cataract, including the metropolis of the ancient kingdom Meroe, had bee explored by very few Europeans, and only two Englishmen; yet it abounds with monuments rivaling those of Egypt in grandeur and beauty, and possessing, in some respect, a superior interest. According to Heeren, Champollion, Rosellini, and other eminent inquirers, whose judgment was confirmed by my own observations, this was the land whence the arts and learning of Egypt, and ultimately of Greece and Rome, derived their origin." (Preface). Binding with some wear along edges of retained boards, with some chips, scuffing and water staining to retained boards. The water staining visible along tops of most plates, while block d … [Click Below for Full Description]
