P. L. Roederer
Paris, Didot -, 1835. Exemplaire magnifique en état absolument parfait [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Maire, N.M.
Early 19th century map of the suburbs of Paris, from Montmorency in the north to Vissons and Villeneuve in the south, and from St. Germain and Versailles in the west to Noisy-le-Grand in the east, with towns and sites including chateaux and parks marked with short captions and elevations. Very minor toning along creases. 16mo. Boards. Abrasions, rubbing, loss to paper along spine, some splitting to boards, pen notation to inside front cover. Paris (Rosselin) 1835. Not much is known about the biography of N.M. Maire. In 1808, he self-published "La topographie de Paris, ou, Plan détaillé de la ville de Paris et de ses faubourgs", a small city atlas of 20 maps and 104 pages of listings of streets, public offices, hotels, hospitals, and other points of interest. Circa 1821 he published the first edition of his "Atlas administratif de Paris", with fourteen copies of the same map of Paris, each devoted to a specific subject including lighting districts, markets, sewers, and firefighting districts. Very scarce; although WorldCat has listings for an earlier and later version of this map, as of December 2017 we were not able to locate a single listing for the 1835 edition.

Santos, Domingo de los.
[Manila?]: Imprenta Real de D. Jose Maria Dayot, 1835. Folio (29 cm, 11.5"). [viii], 739, [1 blank], 118 pp. Palau gives the date of the first edition of this dictionary and grammar of the Tagalog language of the Philippines as 1703, with the next in 1794, followed by this in 1835. This conforms to the editions found via WorldCat; that same source finds only five U.S. libraries reporting ownership of this edition (NYPL, American Philosophical, Yale, Newberry, and Villanova). The earlier editions are even less well held.    => Printed on "rice paper," i.e., paper made using indigenous fibers.    Provenance: Bookseller's label of Deutsche Kunst und Antiquitäten Messe, München.         Palau 300543; Retana, Aparato bibliográfico, 637; Leclerc, Bibliotheca Americana, 2424; Blake, Philippine Languages, 330; Walsh, Philippine Linguistics, 1095. Finden, et al. published by John Murray in London in 1835. These 10 books are clean, tight, square with sharp corners and unmarked. They are bound in blue leather with gilt designs (thistles?) at the edges which continue over the edges to frame the marbled paste downs. The spines have 5 raised bands with gilt decorations and six of the resulting panels have further gilt decorations. The other two panels have red leather paste downs with gilt titles and volume information. The binding was done by Bayton Binders of Bath. NIGHTINGALE, Thomas
London: James Cochrane & Co. 1835. Large duodecimo, with an engraved frontispiece portrait of the author, a hand-coloured aquatint costume plate, and four sepia aquatint views; contemporary dark blue polished calf, sides bordered in gilt, spine gilt in compartments with green leather label, gilt edges, yellow endpapers; half-title and advertisements discarded by the binder. First edition. This quite uncommon book is a narrative of the author's travels in Chile and Peru, and at greater length subsequent travels in the Galapagos, Marquesas, Cook, Samoan and Society Islands. The botanical index, a descriptive list of the ferns collected by Nightingale in the Pacific islands, was compiled by the great botanist William Jackson Hooker, who at the time of this publication was Professor of Botany at the University of Glasgow. Not much seems to be known about Nightingale. The frontispiece portrait of the author shows an informally dressed young man with tousled hair. He writes nicely and is in favour of the missionaries' work in the islands, although the reviewer in The Eclectic Review for 1836 felt that 'from the mode in which he writes, we think it probable that at the time he projected his expedition, he scarcely knew that any thing like an attempt had ever been made to introduce the blessings of civilization and the promises of religion into the regions he was about to explore, and therefore it is, that his testimony is the more to be valued...'. In due course Nightingale speaks of 'the wonders--yes, I may call them the wonders--that have been already wrought in the way of moral … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROSS, JOHN:
Including the Reports of Commander, now Captain James Clark Ross and the Discovery of the Northern Magnetic Pole. + Appendix to the Narrative... In all 2 vols. London: Webster 1835. With 6 engraved maps, one of which is folded and handcoloured, 21 coloured lithographs and 23 engraved plates. Small 4to. [6] + XXXIIII + 740; XII + 120 + CXLIV + CII + [8] + [2] pp. Spines restored and hinges weak, otherwise nice copy with wide margin and chiseled edges bound in contemporary full leather with coloured labels and richly gilt on spines, boards and edges. * First edition. The unfortunate expedition, John Ross and his nephew James Clark Ross, was trapped in the ice of Boothia Peninsula for a year. In Septemper 1830 the ice began to melt, and they again were under sail. They advanced for three miles, the weather worsened, and they were stuck for another winter. A year later the same thing happened. Eventually they were forced to abandon the one remaining ship and set off through a narrow channel of water in search of rescue by artic whalers; amazingly enough they were not only picked up but by the 'Isabella' of Hull, once commanded by John Ross. In spite of the appalling difficulties of the trip, Captain Ross and his nephew made detailed and important studies of the Eskimo tribes of the region, their dress and identify the North Magnetic Pole. The illustrations by the author give a life-like picture of the Eskimos, sitting comfortably with the officers in the ships library, or standing on the ice holding their catch. The natural history supplement is also very important. Lande 1436 … [Click Below for Full Description]

VALLAURI TOMMASO
1835. Mm. 300 x 210, cc. (16) + 3 cc.b. Fascicolo ottimamente conservato. [Click Below for Full Description]

Büchner, Georg
J. D. Sauerländer, Düsseldorf bzw. Berlin, 1835. 152 S. 4 Blatt Anzeigen. [Click Below for Full Description]
