Hoskins G. A
Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green & Longman, 1835. First edition. With a folding map and 54 lithographic plates including the frontispiece after Hoskins and Bondoni, 8 of which are double page, 4 are coloured chromolithos, and 2 are coloured by hand, also with numerous wood engravings within the text. 90 illustrations in total. 4to, in the original near black dark green cloth, bordered in blind on both covers and with pictorial gilt designs of Egyptian statuary on the top cover and spine, gilt lettered on the spine, edges untrimmed. xix, 367. A handsome copy of a book quite hard to find in collectable condition, well preserved and clean with just a bit of minor toning to the page edges, sometime very skillfully rebacked preserving all of the original decorated cloth spine, board edges with minor wear and mellowing, the folding map backed with linen for support, endpapers matching the originals renewed. Very scarce in the original cloth. SCARCE IN THE ORIGINAL CLOTH. A cornerstone work, Hoskins was the first European to describe and illustrate the antiquities of Meroe and one of only a tiny number of explores at the time to have ventured above the Second Cataract. He also spent a year in upper Egypt studying its monuments and journeyed extensively into the Nubian and Ethiopian deserts. It was Hoskins intent to prove that Meroe was the seat of learning from where the arts and sciences of Egypt, and then ultimately Greece and Rome, derived their origin. This account contains detailed studies on the arts and education in these regions. The fine lithographs in this volume were t … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Truth, Sojourner] Stone, William L.
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1835. Hardcover. 347p. [+12p. ads], first edition, 6.25x4 inch green cloth boards lightly stained and frayed on corners and at head and tail of spine, patterned in blind, spine-titled gilt in narrow sansserrif, some foxing throughout and a few corners creased, otherwise a good copy of this remarkable book. Name and place in pencil to rear free endpaper. Small hole to top corner of same. The Kingdom of Matthias exemplified the wild religions of the second great awakening. Matthias, a self-proclaimed prophet, born Robert Matthew, embodied all of the religious contradictions of the period. Like many other self-proclaimed prophets, he mixed an eclectic batch of metaphors to fashion a message for the approaching millennium. Before his own conversion, he was an active anti-Mason and a fiery temperance advocate. His particular conversion experience caused him to believe that he was possessed with the spirit of God, and that he was one of many corporeal spirits running around the planet, some of which were good, some of which were evil.In the early 1830s, Matthias converted a wealthy NY businessman named Elijah Pierson, a Methodist social reformer who proselytized to the city's prostitutes. The Piersons, along with the family of another wealthy merchant, Benjamin Folger, established an upstate commune, Zion Hill, under Matthias' direction. Their small community, consisting of the two merchant families along with a smattering of other people - including a six foot tall former slave named Isabella von Wagenen, who had been a domestic servant before find … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kashfi, Sayyid Ja'far ibn Ishaq.
4to (295 x 185 mm). Persian ms. on smoothed paper. 384 unnumbered ff., 21 lines to a page. With decorative, richly coloured 'unwan headpiece and 17 coloured miniatures, many raised in gilt. Highlighted words written or overscored in red. Contemporary half calf with coloured, lacquered gouache paintings to covers; inside covers show finely excuted floral designs on a red background. Lavishly illuminated manuscript on the knowledge of the world and state philosophy, the title of which might be rendered as "A Gift for Sovereigns". This important treatise was composed in 1817/18 on behalf of Prince Muhammad Taqi Mirza, son of Fath Ali Shah, the second king of the Persian Qajar dynasty, and is the major work by the Iranian philosopher Sayyid Ja'far ibn Ishaq Kashfi (c. 1775-1850), who lived in Borujerd in western Iran. Prince Muhammad Taqi (c. 1791-1848) was the eighth son of the Shah. He was regent of Borujerd but was imprisoned after the death of his father in 1834. The present manuscript with its rich illumination and magnificent binding was begun during the last years of Fath Ali Shah and not completed until after his death. Peculiarly, the manuscript is written in Naskhi rather than in the usual Persian Nastaliq script. While most Persian calligraphers could prepare their work in Naskhi upon request, this may serve to indicate that the manuscript is not a copy by a professional scribe, but rather the manuscript of a scholar (possibly by Kashfi himself?). - The ms. is dated "1151" at the end of the text, which must mean 1251, i.e. 1835/36 C.E. Written on western laid paper w … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHWERD, Friedrich Magnus (1788-1860).
- 4to (259 x 216 mm). "Schwerd, though not well known to modern students, has had a great influence on optics through his monumental book on diffraction . Die Beugungserscheinungen which he wrote in two years' spare time, is the classic comprehensive treatise on Fraunhofer diffraction . Fraunhofer gave the laws which follow from his experiments but neither he nor J. F. W. … [Click Below for Full Description]

NIGHTINGALE, Thomas
London: James Cochrane & Co, 1835. One plate caption slightly cropped; a very nice copy.. Large duodecimo, with an engraved frontispiece portrait of the author, a hand-coloured aquatint costume plate, and four sepia aquatint views; contemporary dark blue polished calf, sides bordered in gilt, spine gilt in compartments with green leather label, gilt edges, yellow endpapers; half-title and advertisements discarded by the binder. First edition. This quite uncommon book is a narrative of the author's travels in Chile and Peru, and at greater length subsequent travels in the Galapagos, Marquesas, Cook, Samoan and Society Islands. The botanical index, a descriptive list of the ferns collected by Nightingale in the Pacific islands, was compiled by the great botanist William Jackson Hooker, who at the time of this publication was Professor of Botany at the University of Glasgow. Not much seems to be known about Nightingale. The frontispiece portrait of the author shows an informally dressed young man with tousled hair. He writes nicely and is in favour of the missionaries' work in the islands, although the reviewer in The Eclectic Review for 1836 felt that 'from the mode in which he writes, we think it probable that at the time he projected his expedition, he scarcely knew that any thing like an attempt had ever been made to introduce the blessings of civilization and the promises of religion into the regions he was about to explore, and therefore it is, that his testimony is the more to be valued...'. In due course Nightingale speaks of 'the wonders-yes, I may call them the wonde … [Click Below for Full Description]

REIDER, Jakob Ernst Von
Vetter & Rostosty, 1835. 8vo. 65 pages plus title page, table of contents, forward, and short list of related works. Text is in German. Original condition with green wrappers titled to front. Minor age-toning, particularly to rear of wrappers, otherwise in very good condition, a rare work. Presented herein are improvements to the cultivation of asparagus, a most uncommon yet significant nineteenth century contribution to the field of agriculture, which begins with the statement, "Die spargel ist unser edelstes Gemüse" [The asparagus is our finest vegetable]. Following a detailed description of the plant's natural features and its perennial nature, Reider reveals new methods for producing the best results, including the ideal soil and location, among other things. The author, Jacob Ernst von Reider (1784-1853) was a German zoologist and botanist. He was a prolific writer on agriculture and horticulture, publishing treatises on flax, sugar substitutes, tobacco, hops, fruit trees, cactus, viticulture, medicinal plants, various flowers and ornamental plants, et al. The present volume is one of his least known and most scarce titles; only two copies are found in OCLC. Reider also wrote "Gartenbau als die höchste Kultur des Grund und Bodens in Deutschland" (Leipzig 1821 ) and with Carl Wilhelm Hahn "Fauna Boica, oder gemeinnützige Naturgeschichte der Thiere Bayerns" (Zeh Nuremberg, 1830-1835). Asparagus was introduced to the Americas around 1850, not long after this treatise was published. By 1469, asparagus was cultivated in French monasteries. It appears to have come into use i … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Harris, John, 1835. 24mo. 189, (33)pp. Engraved illustrations throughout. A collection of longer lyrical and shorter one-line riddles, with answers. Throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries, John Harris was the pre-eminent English publisher of materials for children. An advertisement for all his publications is appended at the very back of this volume. Harris, unlike other children's publishers of the time, produced items that were meant not just to instruct, but also to amuse their readers. He achieved this twofold aim by incorportating diverse content and detailed color images. Though the illustrations in the present volume are monochrome, the work nevertheless bridges didacticism and instruction by providing frequent engravings and offering puzzles that have moral value and that are simply for enjoyment. Bound in green decorated morocco with gold stamping on upper board. Corners bumped, minor general wear to covers, else a fine copy of an edition difficult to come by.

[AUKERIAN (Haroutiun):
Venice Printed at the Press of the same Armenian Academy, 1835, 1835. Small 8vo, 168 x 104 mms., pp. [7] 8 - 62, engraved frontispiece, engraved vignette on title-page, engraved portrait of Mechitar Abbas following dedication leaves, which are in Italic script, contemporary half green sheepskin, binder's cloth, spine in gilt (rubbed); some slight wear to spine and binding, but generally a very good copy. Mechitar Abbas, otherwise known as Abate Mechitar of Sebaste (1676 - 1749) was the founder of a society whose purpose was to form an order devoted to spiritual renewal, particularly that of the Armenian people. He founded the Mechitarist Order, which has been based on San Lazzaro island near Venice since 1717. At present the Mechitarists are known for their scholarly publications of ancient Armenian versions of texts in Greek which are otherwise lost or unknown, as well as their work on the Armenian language, both ancient and modern. At the end of this account of the society is the note that, "Some English noblemen and gentlemen have taken advantage of this opportunity of studying the oriental languages; among whom the more distinguished are Lord St. Asaph, Lord William Russel, and the late Byron by whose assistance a Grammar of the Armenian and English languages was composed by the Rev. Doctor Aucher." Byron alluded to his lessons with Father Pasquale Aucher in a letter 19 December 1816 to John Cam Hobhouse, "I have mastered thirty of the thirty eight cursed scratches of Mesrob the Maker of Alphabets and some words of one syllable.... I have taken upon me the expenses of h … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hermann von Pückler-Muskau
Hallbergersche Verlagsanstalt, 1835. [Click Below for Full Description]

(SOJOURNER TRUTH) STONE, William L.
NY: Harper, 1835. Third edition. 12mo, pp. 347. Bound in contemporary linen (discolored at the bottom of the spine from the removal of a library label), library bookplate on the end paper, a very good copy. From Wikipedia: "Robert Matthews (1788-c. 1841) was an American carpenter, businessman, and religious figure who gathered a cult-like following in 1830s New York. His aliases included Robert Matthias, Jesus Matthias, Matthias the Prophet, and Joshua the Jewish Minister. Matthews successfully converted three wealthy businessmen who helped fund his founding of a settlement he called the Kingdom. The Kingdom eventually got tied up in adultery, bankruptcy, and murder; consequently landing Matthews in jail. He is also remembered today for his brief encounter with Joseph Smith, the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement. Matthews was born in the farming village of Cambridge, in Washington County, New York, and was raised an Anti-Burgher Presbyterian. In 1795 both of his parents died, leaving him along with his four brothers and five sisters to the care of kin and neighbors. In 1806, Robert began learning carpentry and by 1808 had ended up in Manhattan. After accusations of assault and battery on a female, possibly his sister-in-law, Robert returned to Cambridge and set up a successful business. During this time Matthews made occasional visits to New York and soon met his wife, Margaret, whom he married in 1813. Robert's business soon went bankrupt and he was forced to move his family back to New York, where he again took up carpentry. In 1830 he had a vision of a flood abou … [Click Below for Full Description]
