Early 20th-century red half calf, titles to brown morocco label to spines, floral stamp to spines in compartments, raised bands ruled in gilt, red cloth sides, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Engraved frontispieces and vignettes title pages with tissue-guards, double-page plate, and folding facsimile and map. Spines tones, light scuffs to sides, foxing to endpapers, edges, and plates; a very good set. An attractive set of Boswell's great biography, first published in 1791. "This version contains both the original texts, augmented by the additional writings of the biographer and his subject, and the very valuable new and related material which Croker introduced [in his 1831 edition]" (Pottle). "Boswell's Life of Johnson remains the most famous biography in any language, one of Western literature's most germinal achievements: unprecedented in its time in its depth of research and its extensive use of private correspondence and recorded conversation, it sought to dramatize its subject in his authorial greatness and formidable social presence, and at the same time treat him with a profound sympathy and inhabit his inner life. Boswell both elevated the life of the writer to epic stature, and attended to the minute details of life as lived to provide a steady disclosure of character through their long gradual accretion" (ODNB). Walton, Augustus Q.
Athens, Tn: George White, 1835. Good plus.. 75pp. Dbd. Title page chipped at lower corner; initial three leaves separating at lower gutter. Some dampstaining to initial leaves; light tanning and foxing throughout. A scarce, rural Tennessee imprint that chronicles the criminal exploits of John Andrews Murrell; likely the second edition, issued in the same year as the first printed in Lexington, Kentucky. Murrell was a white bandit from Tennessee who led a network of hundreds of fellow criminals described as his "Mystic Clan" in operations along the Mississippi River. He was infamous for stealing enslaved people from one plantation in order to sell them to another owner. His biggest plan was to lead a national slave uprising on Christmas night, 1834, and then set himself up as leader, but he was arrested before the plan could amount to much. The present work was compiled by the author from the papers and accounts of Virgil Stewart, a one-time compatriot of Murrell. "It must be acknowledged that John A. Murell has never been surpassed in cold blooded murders, by any whose names have been recorded on the pages of history, and other villainous feats have never been surpassed by any who have preceded him. He may justly claim the honor of reducing villainy to an organized system, and he may as justly claim the most important station among adepts in crime and iniquity of the blackest kind."A quite popular account that went through several editions during the antebellum period, but the present one is among the earliest and most obscure, with only a dozen copies located by OCLC … [Click Below for Full Description]

COLETTI, Ferdinando.
Sull' avvelenamento pe' funghi.Padova, Prem. Stab. di P. Prosperini, 1863. 8vo. Green paper wrappers. 62 pp. Extremely rare first edition of an Italian work on mushroom poisoning by Ferdinando Coletti (1819-1881), an Italian physician who studied in Padua and made important contributions to medical knowledge, including toxicology. In the present monograph he goes beyond the edibility and toxicity of mushrooms, surveying the incidence, the reasons why these mushrooms are toxic to humans and also proposing measures to prevent mushroom poisoning. These include better education, control of sale and also more medical research to help prevent further poisonings and improve treatment. This makes it not only an academic report on mushroom poisoning, but also a physicians call to take action to prevent people from eating these toxins. The paper wrappers lack their spine and back wrapper, and are slightly frayed at the corners, some marginal stains throughout (not affecting text), otherwise in good condition. Index-catalogue of the library of the Surgeon-General's Office, United States Army, p. 227; Worldcat (1 copy); for the author: Premuda, Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani 26 (1982).

He travelled through the Pacific, mainly along the East and West coasts of South America, the Sandwich Islands and China. Although the voyage was undertaken for commercial reasons, the detailed and close observations are of great importance, perhaps more so as special attention is given to economical-political points of view, for instance where and to what extent political and naval support is wanted for commerce. The author also describes all the red tape and paperwork to be done before business can start. The third volume deals mainly with the Sandwich Islands, Canton, Macao and the Philippines. Of special interest is the information on Hawaii (pp. 1-178), including some data on whaling, the way of living, the language etc. With maps of Colombia, Peru, South America (colo … [Click Below for Full Description]

De zoogdieren, vogelen en visschen. Afgebeeld en beschreven voor Nederlandsche jonge lieden.Amsterdam, Diederichs brothers, 1835-1836. 3 parts in 1 volume. 8vo. With 3 wood engraved frontispieces and ca. 200 wood engravings in text (many full-page). Contemporary boards. VIII, 210; X, 187; VIII, 152 pp. Very rare first and only edition of (the Dutch translation?) of a richly illustrated zoological children's book. The book is divided into three parts: mammals, birds and fishes, making a broad selection of animals from apes to whales, from vultures to pelicans and from perches to rays. The latter parts not only describes the fishes, but also discusses fishery. Huiskamp notes it's translated from the English by W.J. Olivier, but no original is known and his information is not found elsewhere. W.J. Olivier has done several other very free translations, so the present could be modelled after Bewick, with new engravings. The few other copies located are all listed under their part titles, which seem to suggest they don't include the general title-page.With the 19th-century owner's inscription and embossed library stamp of Daniël Boissevain. Some occasional spots and faint foxing, otherwise in very good condition. Slightly rubbed along the spine, one hinges partly cracked, and the title-label worn; the binding otherwise good. Charlet, Nicolas
1835. Lackmalerei (Braunschweig? oder Russisch?) - Ölbild auf Blech - unsigniert, möglicherweise Nicolas Charlet (1792-1845)?, wahrscheinlich um 1830-1835 Schriftliche Vermerk (Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet) am Rückkarton. Aber wohl möglich eher Niederländischen Stil anstatt Französisch. Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet (* 20. Dezember 1792 in Paris 29. [Click Below for Full Description]

ANDERSEN, Hans Christian
Copenhagen C.A.Reitzel -1837, 1835. First edition in book form, bound from the three parts,as issued with introduction by the author. 78x120mm. Contemporary half speckled calf over marbled boards. A very good copy which is worn to the outer corners and edges of the boards, but entirely unrepaired and retaining bright gilt to the spine. Internally, marking or browning to some pages, but overall a handsome and well preserved copy. Housed in a later red, half morocco, clamshell box. The first edition of Andersen's first collection of fairy tales, which includes the first appearance of some of his most famous stories, namely 'The Princess and the Pea', 'Thumbelina', 'The Little Mermaid', 'The Tinder Box' and 'The Emperor's New Clothes'. Prior to writing fairy tales, Andersen had written a couple of volumes of poetry and a novel all of which had met with quiet approval from the critics. His 1830 volume of poems contained a story called, 'The Ghost, a Fairy Tale from Funen'. With the story he wrote, "As a child it was my greatest joy to listen to fairy tales. it is my intention, provided it meets with approval, to retell several, and some day publish a cycle of Danish folk tales." It would seem that the idea engendered no immediate enthusiasm from publishers, but some five years later, on New Year's Day 1835, Andersen wrote to his friend, Henriette Hanck, saying, "I am now starting several "Children's Tales," and you must know that I shall try to conquer future generations.". So it was in May of that year that a small pamphlet, containing the first four tales, appeared in print. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Housed in a custom half morocco slipcase. $1800.First edition of Davey Crockett's second autobiography intended to appeal to Western voters and encourage them to back William Henry Harrison in the 1836 presidential election, with frontispiece portrait, in original cloth.""Davy [Crockett]'s second autobiographical work, 'The Tour,' was a Whig campaign device. This break with the Democrats made him an important person and a valuable asset to the Whigs. For he was a real coonskin Democrat, a native Tennessean, and an authentic Westerner sent to Congress on the Jackson ticket but at bitter odds with Old Hickory. Clever Whig politicians began to exploit his eccentricities, his canebrake waggery, and his anti-Jackson spleen in order to big for the western vote. Thus, the Davy Crockett myth was created in Washington for partisan purposes The Whigs decided to put Davy on tour as a campaign stunt; and he seems never to have realized how grossly he was exploited. 'The Tour' was probably written by Augustin S. Clayton, a Georgia Congressman, but doubtless under Davy's eye an with Davy's help. In any case, 'The Tour' was used as a Whig campaign document"" (Quarterly Review). The mythmaking is evident in the text: ""I had braved the lonely forests of the West; I had shouldered the warrior's rifle in the far South; but the North and the East I had never seen. Stored in bubble wrap and damp free safe since 2008. Dispatched with Royal Mail 1st Class. John Clare (13 July 1793 - 20 May 1864) was an English poet. The son of a farm labourer, he became known for his celebrations of the English countryside and sorrows at its disruption.[1] His poetry underwent major re-evaluation in the late 20th century: he is now often seen as a major 19th-century poet.[2] His biographer Jonathan Bate called Clare "the greatest labouring-class poet that England has ever produced. No one has ever written more powerfully of nature, of a rural childhood, and of the alienated and unstable self."[3] The Rural Muse, published in 1835 includes songs, sonnets, and autobiographical poems. Though Howard considered some of the pieces "disappointing," he noted that others "demonstrate just how far Clare had progressed in his craft." Howard praised the originality of "Autumn," in which Clare describes the changing of the seasons: "Thy pencil dashing its excess of shades, / Improvident of waste, till every bough / Burns with thy mellow touch / Disorderly divine." With The Rural Muse critical and public interest in Clare's work continued to dwindle. The attention that the book did bring, h … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gretch, St. Petersburg, 1835. A SCARCE RUSSIAN MINERALOGICAL WORK - IN A SUPERB BINDING TYPICAL OF NOBLE RUSSIAN PROVENANCE AND FROM THE LIBRARY OF BORIS BEREZOVSKY. The work, detailed and well structured, focuses on the chemical composition of minerals, their geometry and physical properties. The text is accompanied by engraved folding plates depicting different crystalline structures and various scientific instruments. It was compiled by the German-Russian engineer Anton Shturm and is largely a translation of Ernst Friedrich Glocker’s "Handbuch der Mineralogie" (Nürnberg, 1829), though Shturm added many comments of his own. The publication was funded by the St. Petersburg Mineralogical Society. It is much probably the first edition, but, because of rarity, we couldn’t find much information on the work and its author.
