PIRANESI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA
Paris: , ca. 1835. Paris, ca. 1835. Second Paris Edition. 505 x 720 mm. (20 x 28 1/4"). Second Paris Edition. Plate 39 from volume II of "Le Antichità Romane," with a 375 x 500 mm. (14 3/4 x 19 1/2") etching of an external view of the remains of a columbarium tomb which possibly belonged to the Augusto family. Focillon 263; Wilton-Ely 398. Scattered mild foxing to the (generous) margins, faint vertical crease to center, but a fine specimen, clean, fresh, and rather bright, with a rich impression of the plate. This is a handsome etching showing an external view of burial chambers within a mausoleum believed to belong to the family of the Roman emperor Augustus, from the second Paris edition of Piranesi's masterful "Roman Antiquities." Gaius Octavius Augustus (63 B.C. - 14 A.D.) became the first emperor of Rome in 27 B.C. and soon undertook an ambitious building program, constructing a forum, temples, a mausoleum, triumphal arches, and other monuments. Many of these buildings, including the mausoleum, were ransacked and damaged by the pillaging Visigoths in 410, and by the time our artist came to the city, they had fallen into ruin. Italian artist Giovanni Battista (or Giambattista) Piranesi (1720-78) studied in Venice, where he was influenced by Tiepolo's topographical and antiquarian engravings, before opening a print shop in Rome. There, he produced the etchings of Roman views, buildings, and ruins that made him famous. Informed by his experience in Venice and his study of the works of Marco Ricci and particularly Giovanni Paolo Panini, he appreciated not only the … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Apes
Boston Mass: Jonathan Howe. Rare Antique Native American History Book "THE MARSHPEE TRIBE" 1835 The Pretended Riot Explained. Antique Book by Author William Apes. Published by Jonathan Howe in Boston Mass. Book measures 7" X 4 1/2" See all pictures for Condition. Book was found in a underground NYC/Park Ave safe vault with a Picasso boy with pipe painting. William Apess (1798-1839, Pequot) (also known as William Apes before 1837), was an ordained methodist minister, writer, and activist of Mixed race descent, who was a political and religious leader in Massachusetts. After becoming ordained as a Methodist minister in 1829, he published his autobiography the same year. It is among the first autobiographies by a Native American writer. Apess was part Pequot by descent, especially through his mother's family, and identified with their culture. In 1833, while serving as an itinerant preacher in New England, Apess visited the Mashpee on Cape Cod. Hearing their grievances against white overseers and settlers who stole their wood, he helped organize what was called the Mashpee Revolt of 1833-34. Their attempt to regain civil rights was covered sympathetically by the Boston Advocate, but criticized by local journals on Cape Cod. Apess published a book about the experience in 1835, which he summarized as "Indian Nullification." Apess alienated many of his supporters before dying in New York City at age 41, but he has been described as "perhaps the most successful activist on behalf of Native American rights in the antebellum United States.

VINCENT, H.A.
Paris, chez l'éditeur, 1835. 4to (280 x 210mm). With a fine pictorial title and 24 plates, all stipple engravings, printed in colour with extensive hand-finishing, engraved by Lambert after drawings by Madame H. Vincent. Contemporary calf-backed boards, spine gilt. Very scarce suite of plates of floral bouquets by Madame Henriette Vincent (1786-1830) pupil of Van Spaendonck and Redouté, the most famous flower painters of the period. This fine suite of plates is very much in the tradition of their best work. The plates are stipple engraved and printed in colours with fine handfinishing. 'Two other pupils of van Spaendonck, madame Vincent and Antoine Chazal, used colour printed stipple engravings to noteworthy advantage. Each is responsible for one work whose plates are rather small but of such consummate loveliness that they enhance the reputation and distinction of the French school' (Dunthorne p. 34). Madame Vincent exhibited flowers in watercolours at the 1814, 1819, 1822 and 1824 Paris Salon. Dunthorne 322 quotes only an incomplete copy with 22 plates. Not in any of the usual bibliographies. The followings flowers are shown: Rose de Provins, Rose blanche, Campanules, Pois de Santeur; Campanules bleu et blanc, Lys St. Jacques; Rose Capucine, Narcisse, Réséda, Chrisantemun; Renoncules, Jacinthe Phlox; Coquelicot Double, Pensée; Tulipe Capucine; Rose à cent feuilles, Pavot, Narcisse; Rose Blanche, Jiroflée; Tigridia Pavonia, Immortelle; Rose à cent feuilles, Reine Marguerite, Narcisse; Oeillet, Bouton d'or Double; Soleil vivace, Myosotis; Reine Marguerite, Fuschia; Campanule … [Click Below for Full Description]

TOCQUEVILLE, ALEXIS de. - [THE FOUNDATION OF CONSERVATIVE LIBERALISM]
Paria, Gosselin, 1835-40. Lex 8vo. Bound in two excellent contemporary uniform black half calf bindings with blindstamped ornamentation and gilt lettering to spines. Only the slightest signs of wear to extremities. Some browning and brownspotting due to the paper quality, but overall in very nice condition. A few leaves in volume one with marginal markings. (4), XXIV, 365, (3) + (4), 455 pp. + folded, coloured map + (2), V, (3), 333, (1) + (4), 363 pp. An excellent set of the first edition of Tocqueville's monumental "Democracy in America", one of the most important texts in the history of political thought. Being the founding treatise of conservative liberalism and democracy in the 19th century, and generally "one of the most important texts on political literature" (PMM, p. 217), "De la démocratie en Amérique" is a classic of social sience, an analysis on the nature and institutions of American society. Beside the "Federalist Papers", it is considered one of the most significant works ever written on American political and civil life" (Books that made Europe p. 206). It is rare to find all four volumes contemporarily bound, and especially in as nice condition as here. Goldsmiths 28902-3. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Boston Chemical Printing Company, 1835. Sunday Lessons No. 1 [Early Appearance of "Mary Had a Little Lamb," Printed on Cloth] Author: Published: Boston; Boston Chemical Printing Company, Binding: Condition: Very good (please see full item description for details) Description: Undated, but ca. 1835. Handkerchief printed in black on white cotton. 10.25 x 11.25 inches. Text in three columns, decorative border, small illustration at the head of each column. A very good example, with some scattered foxing. Technological developments of the early nineteenth century made printed textiles available in greater quantity and at a lower price than ever before. Not only were textile companies offering new printed fabrics, but traditional publishers of books, pamphlets, broadsides, etc., began printing some items on cloth. As Diane Affleck of the American Textile History Museum explains, "Textile prints produced by paper printers usually combined text with images or other decorative elements to create a publication which, like a broadside, was self-contained and printed on a single sheet, in this case, fabric instead of paper. Some prints had no purpose other than as a keepsake or souvenir, while others functioned, at least in theory, as handkerchiefs. The subjects of the textiles were generally commemorative, persuasive, or instructional" (Textiles in New England II, p. 195). This handkerchief, which falls into the "instructional" category, was one of several produced for children by the Boston Chemical Printing Company. It is of particular note for including "Mary's Lamb," the poem whi … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Crockett, Davy]
Nashville: Published for the Author, 1835. 48pp. including illustrations. Original pictorial wrappers. Spine perished, re-sewn at later date, cloth loop affixed at top of spine. Small repaired tear to outer margin of first leaf; expertly-repaired diagonal tear in the first leaf, penultimate leaf, and last leaf, mildly affecting text; a few short repaired marginal tears; minor staining, moderate foxing. Overall good plus. Volume 1, number 2 of the Crockett series of almanacs, and the last to be published in Crockett's lifetime. These earliest editions of the Crockett almanacs are quite scarce. The illustration on the front wrapper shows "Col. Crockett's Method of Wading the Mississippi," with Crockett striding across on stilts. In one paragraph of the text Crockett explains why he "didn't speechify in Congress the last Winter." The reason was that his "throat and jaws were so exflunctoficated with the influenza that I even snored hoarse." The illustrations and narrative text are typically wild and woolly, including Davy's fight with a giant catfish; the story of the Parson and his dinner of "bush eels"; Ben Harding's encounter with an alligator; Judy Coon stomping a nest of wild kittens to death; Zip Spooner's melee with a black bear; and similar ilk. From such tall tales legends are born. HENDERSON, p.96. HOWES C897, "aa." STREETER SALE 4184. ALLEN IMPRINTS 1201. DRAKE 13408. GROLIER AMERICAN 100, 39. AMERICAN IMPRINTS 31279. SABIN 17576 (ref).
