Thomas of Britanny; Michel, Francisque, ed.
Londres: Guillaume Pickering, 1835. First edition. Hardcover. 2 volumes. 12mo. Illustrated with lithographs of the manuscripts, some with initials colored by hand in red and blue. Publisher's original cloth in a small diaper design. This is clearly Winterbottom's Type 'H' (Tomlinson). Krupp (p.23) ascribes an appearance date of 1836 for this early design; to find it on books published in 1835 is a treat. That it would appear on a Pickering work should be no surprise. Pickering started experimenting with bookcloth as early as 1823 through his binder, Archibald Leighton, who was responsible for many innovations in the design and use of early bookcloth. The text constitutes mainly the remains of Thomas of Britain's Tristan Romance, composed in the 12th and 13th centuries in Norman French and Greek, here edited and rendered in the originals by Fr. MIchel. This is a very good set; the printed paper labels are darkened a bit with some wear to their edges. The frontispiece in volume II has a short closed marginal tear (no loss, nor affecting the image of the manuscript). Fairly scarce. A third volume with additional Tristan fragments was issued in 1839, not present her. There is an old note on the front free endpaper indicating that this is one of 250 copies, but we have not been able to confirm that limitation. This is the first printed edition of Thomas of Britain. It dates from about 1170, and includes Tristan's marriage and the Hall of Statues, his return to Cornwall, and the lovers' deaths, using the motif of the sails. 1835. One page, square 12mo (114 x 104 mm), a few pale stains, one short separation along fold. Item #403588 Cooper apparently returns a copy of a translation of Frithiof's saga, or The legend of Frithiof by Esaias Tegner (London, 1835), edited and translated in part by Frye: "My dear Major, I send back the Danes, big and little, Swedes, 'pioneers and all.' We think 'Frithiof' a striking poem, and owe you an especial notice for having translated it into any other than your mother tongue. With many thanks and constant good wishes, I am my dear Major, yours very truly J. Fenimore Coooper. Do you see the republicans were like to get the republic of Frankfurt. What a thing is a name." It is known that Herman Melville read Frithiof's saga, and it fits that Cooper too would look to other epics in the process of writing his own of America.

SYDNEY HERALD] MCDONALD, Ann
Sydney, 1835. Small loss from the seal being removed (no text-loss), otherwise very good.. ALS, single-sheet 224 x 370 mm, folded to letter-size 4pp (one in cross hatch), wove paper, stamped with rare oval postal handstamp in black only in use for six months. From Ann McDonald, sister of prominent printer and Colonial publisher of the Sydney Herald William McGarvie, to her sister and brother-in-law in Scotland. Ann's unaffected style makes much of her prosperous life in Sydney. Along with 'four new muslane frocks', she has 'eleven pounds ten in the Savings Bank' but 'you need not tell this to every one'. Her affluence may well be due to the return-to-prosperity of her brother, William McGarvie. Following his brother John to Sydney 1828 McGarvie ran the stationery warehouse owned by the famous printer, Robert Howe. Then, in 1831, along with two others, McGarvie purchased a printing press and set up the Sydney Herald. After six issues he sold his shares to his partners and briefly returned to Scotland. By 1832 he was back in Sydney employed by Robert Howe's widow, Ann. He did so well that by the date of this letter he had virtually retired, devoting most of his time to building his estate, Mount Pleasant, at Port Macquarie. From 1830 the penal settlement of Port Macquarie had opened to free settlers who took advantage of area's abundant natural resources.Ann's husband James McDonald is also in Port Macquarie assisting in building a house for 'Captain Robinson' and even though the land had 'become very Deare as a greate manay is turning farmeres...' Ann refers to the … [Click Below for Full Description]

EVERETT, Edward
[1835], n.p. Stitched wraps (8" x 9-3/4") consisting of a title and 65 pages bound together with a ribbon, all edges gilt. A lengthy, closely written MANUSCRIPT by Edward Everett, not signed though initialed after his instructions. An early oration from Edward Everett (1794-1865), Whig politician, U.S. Representative and Senator, sometime President of Harvard University, United States Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Britain, and Governor of Massachusetts before being appointed United States Secretary of State. On the back of the title-page, Everett has penciled, "[The compositor will please not to cut nor tear this manuscript, but preserve it as clean as he can conveniently]. E.E." The compositor accomplished the required feat. The oration was published in Boston by Russell, Shattuck, & Williams in 1835. In this commencement address Everett discusses the extension of the means of education and the societal benefits of the general diffusion of knowledge to liberty, science, and virtue. Edward Everett is perhaps best known for his oratory powers. It is he who gave the "other" address at Gettysburg on 19 November 1863. The next day he wrote Lincoln saying, "I should be glad if I could flatter myself that I came as near the central idea of the occasion in two hours as you did in two minutes." Jules Dufour (1812-1871)
1835. Sulis Fine Art is proud to present this exquisite French school interior with figures, by the artist Jules Dufour (1812-1871). Central to the dark interior scene is an elderly female figure, in early 19th Century French dress, surrounded by three young children, with one standing on a wooden stool. The setting depicts an assortment of dead game to the lower right, including ducks and a rabbit, with a woven basket and a dresser behind, displaying various stone and pewter tableware. Dufour has been influenced by both the French school of painters prevalent in the first part of the 19th Century, as well as the overall style and aesthetics of Dutch Old Masters, with regards to lighting and mood. The positioning of the figures, and elements of still life in the composition, join to create an expressive and eye-catching work. The artist uses minute and intricate brushwork to convey both a reflective and playful mood, enhancing the varied dynamic of the scene. A truly marvellous and engaging work, emanating the humanism of both the artist and the subject. Handsomely presented in a substantial late 19th Century gilt wooden frame, with highly ornate running mouldings, including gilt slip, lamb's tongue, floral strapwork flat, acanthus leaf cove and leaf-and-berry running pattern. Pronounced corner and central ribbon mouldings, as shown. Signed and dated. On canvas on stretchers. Size: Large (30-60cm) Framed: Yes Style: Realism [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
