The Anti-Gambling Society of Transylvania University. Original wraps. A very uncommon piece of anti-gambling literature, in its 1835 original printing. Issued by the Anti-Gambling Society of Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, this slim "discourse" is one of the earliest to appraocjh the problem of gambling as a medical condition. The wrappered 1st edition is solid, still tightly-bound and VG-, with light, inoffensive foxing scattered thruout the text. Its original covers have been cleanly removed but all other pages and signatures are accounted for and the text is complete. Octavo, 59 pgs. including the Appendix. Very Good -. Suchodolska, Lisbeth (Elisabeth) von, geb. Bauer (1844 Leipzig ? nach 1912)
1835. Bleistift, auf festem Velin. Rechts unten bezeichnet und datiert ?Spinnmühle 31. Aug. 83?. 22,8:14,8 cm. In den Rändern leicht vergilbt. Skizzenbuchblatt.

Phillis Wheatley
Light & Horton, Boston, 1835. Phillis Wheatley was the first African-American to publish a book in the United States, and she was America's first black female poet. This is the 1835 edition (second edition) of her rare book Memoir and Poems of Phillis Wheatley, A Native African and a Slave--a highly desirable and collectible volume, although with some condition problems, as noted below. Published in Boston by Light & Horton, printed by Samuel Harris. Hardcover with 114 pages, with the last four pages being publisher's ads. PLEASE NOTE carefully the condition and see photos: Original title label on front cover, with some wear along the edges of the label. Wear at corners, spine ends, and edges of cover. A few stains on both the front and back cover of the ribbed cloth cover. Cloth for the bottom two inches of the spine is missing, and the front hinge is broken and the cover is largely detached from the text block. The back hinge is intact. Signs of insect activity at the top left corner of the front pastedown, and then progressively lesser activity on the frontispiece, tissue guard, and title page--that's where it stops. Occasional foxing on pages. The price takes into consideration the condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Allen, William, Lieut.
Smith, Elder, and Co, 1835. First edition, oblong folio, pp. [16]; vignette title page showing a small topographical map of the island, 10 hand-colored lithograph plates (2 of them beautiful folding panoramas), all on India paper mounted, and each accompanied by descriptive text; modern quarter brown calf over marbled boards, red morocco label on upper cover; 2 plates with short mended tears in the fore-margins (not entering the image), binding very lightly rubbed; near fine throughout. William Allen (1793-1864) was a naval officer best known for his part in the River Niger expeditions of 1832 and 1841-2. The sketches from which these lithographs were made were drawn by Allen during a two-month stay on Ascension, possibly while he recuperated from the rigors of the first Niger expedition. The OCLC records look to be erroneous as they show in some cases fewer pages, and in others, fewer plates. Not in Abbey, Travel. Not in Tooley, Color Plate Books. [Attributes: First Edition]

De VIGNY, Alfred
Hippolyte Souverain, Paris, 1835. ___________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________ENGLISH_DESCRIPTION______________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ Nineteenth-century full green morocco, spine in six compartments lettered in gilt, gilt edges, single gilt fillet on edges, marbled endpapers. STEVENS, Colonel Linus W.
[New York], 1835. Unbound. Near Fine. Single page letter. Measuring 7.5" x 10.5". Creased from mailing with some spotting else near fine. A letter written as a short note of gratitude Signed by the inmates at Bellevue Alms House to the superintendent, Colonel Linus W. Stevens, upon his retirement from the position. The letter reads: "Col. Stevens Sir, as you are soon to leave the superintendence of the Alms House - permit us the unfortunate inmates of the Alms House to express all that we can give - Our warmest and heartfelt gratitude for the unremitting exertions which you have at all times made for the comfort of the unfortunate - and for your universally urbane and gentlemanly conduct as an officer and a man. We wish you and your family happiness. Respectfully yours." The bottom two thirds of the letter include the signatures of the "inmates" of the institution and is dated May 29, 1835 along the side of the letter. This almshouse is most likely the predecessor of New York's Bellevue Hospital. The original Alms House was thought to have been an improvement over the earlier primitive "barber surgeon" practices in place before the institute. Eventually the Alms House was moved to a former mansion, Belle Vue, and provided, at the time, state of the art medical care including early uses of ambulance. By 1931 the hospital was overshadowed by the reputation of the psychiatric wing of Bellevue. Colonel Linus W. Stevens was a member of the New York National Guard and served on the Alms House board until 1836. He died at the age of 70 in 1848. An interesting letter representi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Approximately 50 designs, including fully realized furniture styles with measurements, some sketches or details of design elements (table legs, column styles, acanthus leaf patterns, etc.), some more abbreviated images of design features. Dates on some of the drawings indicate the notebook was used between 1830 and 1833. One manuscript entry includes a grid-style list of prices for joints in various woods; another describes the construction of a portable desk, giving the cost of various additions to the basic design, such as a hollow for pens, a square drawer, and a book rest. Another 10 pp. offer approximately 18 recipes for stains and varnishes. Three loose scraps containing designs laid in. Moderate wear, dampstaining to endpapers, otherwise very good. The letterpress broadside advertises Richardson's business, and reads, in part: "Holley / Cabinet / Ware House. / C. Richardson, / would inform the people of Holley, and vicinity, / that he still continues the cabinet making business 3 doors south of Perry's Tavern..." (Brockport: A. Edwards, Printer, [1835]).
