Leopardi, Giacomo
[Saverio Starita], 1835. [Click Below for Full Description]

According to Heeren, Champollion, Rosellini, and other eminent inquirers, whose judgment was confirmed by my own observations, this was the land whence the arts and learning of Egypt, and ultimately of Greece and Rome, derived their origin." William Apes
Boston Mass: Jonathan Howe. Rare Antique Native American History Book "THE MARSHPEE TRIBE" 1835 The Pretended Riot Explained. Antique Book by Author William Apes. Published by Jonathan Howe in Boston Mass. Book measures 7" X 4 1/2" See all pictures for Condition. Book was found in a underground NYC/Park Ave safe vault with a Picasso boy with pipe painting. William Apess (1798-1839, Pequot) (also known as William Apes before 1837), was an ordained methodist minister, writer, and activist of Mixed race descent, who was a political and religious leader in Massachusetts. After becoming ordained as a Methodist minister in 1829, he published his autobiography the same year. It is among the first autobiographies by a Native American writer. Apess was part Pequot by descent, especially through his mother's family, and identified with their culture. In 1833, while serving as an itinerant preacher in New England, Apess visited the Mashpee on Cape Cod. Hearing their grievances against white overseers and settlers who stole their wood, he helped organize what was called the Mashpee Revolt of 1833-34. Their attempt to regain civil rights was covered sympathetically by the Boston Advocate, but criticized by local journals on Cape Cod. Apess published a book about the experience in 1835, which he summarized as "Indian Nullification." Apess alienated many of his supporters before dying in New York City at age 41, but he has been described as "perhaps the most successful activist on behalf of Native American rights in the antebellum United States.

This compelled him to undertake it as a private venture in the small paddle-steamer Victory, which was sponsored by Felix Booth (the Sheriff of London), and crewed with a privately-raised company that included Ross's nephew James Clark Ross. The expedition's purpose was to discover a Northwest Passage by way of Baffin Bay, Lancaster Sound, and Prince Regent Inlet, and it achieved several firsts: it was the first expedition to use a steam engine in polar exploration; the first to explore the region of the Gulf of Boothia; and James Clark Ross was the first p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Boston Chemical Printing Company, 1835. Sunday Lessons No. 1 [Early Appearance of "Mary Had a Little Lamb," Printed on Cloth] Author: Published: Boston; Boston Chemical Printing Company, Binding: Condition: (please see full item description for details) Description: Undated, but ca. 1835. Handkerchief printed in black on white cotton. 10.25 x 11.25 inches. Text in three columns, decorative border, small illustration at the head of each column. A very good example, with some scattered foxing. Technological developments of the early nineteenth century made printed textiles available in greater quantity and at a lower price than ever before. Not only were textile companies offering new printed fabrics, but traditional publishers of books, pamphlets, broadsides, etc., began printing some items on cloth. As Diane Affleck of the American Textile History Museum explains, "Textile prints produced by paper printers usually combined text with images or other decorative elements to create a publication which, like a broadside, was self-contained and printed on a single sheet, in this case, fabric instead of paper. Some prints had no purpose other than as a keepsake or souvenir, while others functioned, at least in theory, as handkerchiefs. The subjects of the textiles were generally commemorative, persuasive, or instructional" (Textiles in New England II, p. 195). This handkerchief, which falls into the "instructional" category, was one of several produced for children by the Boston Chemical Printing Company. It is of particular note for including "Mary's Lamb," the poem which would c … [Click Below for Full Description]

Walt Whitman et. al.
Vol. 12, No. 1 (July 5, 1834) to No. 52 (June 27, 1835). Small folio. VG-, hinges and tips worn, bound in contemporary leather and marbled boards. Contents VG+ with considerable foxing. Title page and index bound in. The Mirror was an eight-page weekly containing literary criticism, poetry, book reviews, theater notices, commentary, letters from abroad, and a piece of music with words and notes on the last page of each issue. Articles in this volume are devoted to New York University; Cure of an Opium-Eater; Wilson, the Ornithologist; the Witches of Lancashire of 1612; Charles Lamb on Modern Gallantry; English Writers of America by Washington Irving; two poems by William Cullen Bryant; and more. In addition to an engraved title page, and woodcuts sprinkled through the text, the magazine features five full-page engraved plates: the Washington Monument at Baltimore; the presidents of the United States; a portrait of comedian George Hill; a view of Washington’s headquarters at Newburgh, NY; and “Evening – A Scene in the Highlands, NY.” What makes this volume special is the first printing in the November 29, 1834 issue of “The Olden Time,” signed “W,” the first published piece by Walt Whitman, at the time just fifteen years old. The essay is not cited by Myerson, though he refers to a possible Whitman work in The Mirror in 1835 as “not seen” (Myerson I3). In the three-paragraph piece Whitman talks about how though New York City may feel “civilized,” there were still likely people around who “conversed with men who once saw the present great metropolitan city as a little dorp or … [Click Below for Full Description]

1835. 16.5x22.6; 15.6x22.3cm. Two pencil drawings mounted on plain paper with date and title captioned in English. A very good condition. Unidentified artist (signature E.C. in the left bottom corner). Rare historical evidence of one of the most famous fires in the 19th century England. The views of the destruction of both Houses of Parliament from Abington and Surrey side on the night of the 16th October 1834. One of the most disastrous fires in the history of England was caused by the unsupervised burning of two large cartloads of wooden tally sticks (a form of medieval tax receipt) in the heating furnaces. Warning signs were persistently ignored by the Housekeeper and Clerk of Works, and the Prime Minister would later declare the catastrophe, 'one of the greatest instances of stupidity upon record'. A huge fireball exploded out of the building at around 6.30pm, immediately attracting hundreds of thousands of people. The conflagration was fought by parish engines, insurance companies and the private London Fire Engine Establishment. Hundreds of volunteers, including MPs and Peers, staffed the pumps on the night, and were paid in beer for their efforts. The fire lasted for most of the night and destroyed a large part of the palace, including the converted St Stephen's Chapel - the meeting place of the House of Commons - the Lords Chamber, the Painted Chamber and the official residences of the Speaker and the Clerk of the House of Commons. The damage to the wrecked Palace was estimated at £2 million. No-one however was prosecuted, though the public inquiry found various peo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mickiewicz Adam Bernard, Odyniec, Lord George Gordon Byron,

Antica firma d'appartenenza privata alla prima carta bianca "Ludwik Zoma... (?)". … [Click Below for Full Description]

[MANUSCRIPT]; Andrew, L.C.
United States, 1835. Vernacular sketchbook of early American views, produced by an unknown young artist. The naïve landscapes include a number of river scenes, including pencil sketches of "a brig bound out" and Native Americans in a canoe. There are full-page watercolors of Mount Vernon from the Potomac side (complete with family dog and doghouse) and the Washington family tomb. An intriguing artifact of the early national period, reflecting not only reverence for Washington, but also a decidedly Romantic feeling for the American landscape. Side-stitched landscape sketchbook, measuring 6.25 x 8 inches: [22]. Contemporary marbled wrappers. Five watercolor landscapes, painted rectos only, and three full-page pencil sketches (one detached from binding). Signed in pencil in a child's hand to verso of upper wrapper: "L.C. Andrew / 1835." Wrappers partially split at top fold; marginal staining to lower wrapper and two of the pencil sketches.
