Parker, A.A.
Concord, N.H.: White & Fisher, 1835. 276pp., plus woodcut frontispiece and one plate. 12mo. Original green muslin, gilt red morocco spine label. Expertly rebacked, retaining most of the original backstrip. Muslin a bit rubbed and shelfworn, corners worn. Some light staining to titlepage and the early part of the text. Very good overall. Parker was a New Hampshire lawyer and judge, and part-time author. During his travels he spent a good deal of time in Texas just prior to the Revolution. This is an early English-language description of Texas, and quite positive in its view of what had been characterized as a very rough country. There are occasional trenchant observations of slavery, including an incident in Texas where a recently re- captured slave beg Parker to help him escape his bondage. Parker also devotes six chapters to an account of his trip through northern and central Illinois with descriptions of the state, and the appendix contains descriptions of other Midwestern states. The plates depict sporting scenes: "Catching Wild Horses" and "Shooting Deer." "Even though quite prosaic in style, it has for a little known new country like Texas the interest that is present in any early contemporary account of travels" - Streeter. "A valuable work" - Buck. HOWES P74. WAGNER-CAMP 57a:1. STREETER TEXAS 1172. CLARK III:82. BUCK 276. PHILLIPS, SPORTING BOOKS, p.286. RADER 2589. RAINES, pp.161-62. SABIN 58643. BASIC TEXAS BOOKS 159. GRAFF 3183. EVERETT, Edward
n.p., [1835]. Manuscript. Blank wrappers soiled, a few chips; internally Fine. Stitched wraps (8" x 9-3/4") consisting of a title and 65 pages bound together with a ribbon, all edges gilt. A lengthy, closely written MANUSCRIPT by Edward Everett, not signed though initialed after his instructions. An early oration from Edward Everett (1794-1865), Whig politician, U.S. Representative and Senator, sometime President of Harvard University, United States Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Britain, and Governor of Massachusetts before being appointed United States Secretary of State. On the back of the title-page, Everett has penciled, "[The compositor will please not to cut nor tear this manuscript, but preserve it as clean as he can conveniently].... E.E." The compositor accomplished the required feat. The oration was published in Boston by Russell, Shattuck, & Williams in 1835. In this commencement address Everett discusses the extension of the means of education and the societal benefits of the general diffusion of knowledge to liberty, science, and virtue. Edward Everett is perhaps best known for his oratory powers. It is he who gave the "other" address at Gettysburg on 19 November 1863. The next day he wrote Lincoln saying, "I should be glad if I could flatter myself that I came as near the central idea of the occasion in two hours as you did in two minutes.

Hamburg: City Council, 1835. Loose leaf. vg. Elephant Folio broadside (15 1/3 x 12 3/4"). Original gray broadside with black lettering and emblem of City of Hamburg. The proclamation translated below was printed and posted around Hamburg after riots against its Jewish Citizens had broken out on July 31, 1835 and spread on the following day, August 1st 1835. The tone of the proclamation tries to accomplish two things: First, to downplay the incidents and calm the Hamburg population treating this disorderly conduct not as a major event, and second, to show determination towards anybody who doesn't revert to peaceful measures to solve the misgivings. Although it is issued specifically due to the anti-Jewish riots, it does not mention that the riots were anti-Jewish protests. "Proclamation (Bekanntmachung / our translation from the original) The horseplay and mischief taking place on the evening before yesterday in the Alster Hall, spread yesterday evening, leading to crimes on some other streets of the New City, and a repetition will not be tolerated. Therefore all milling around on the Jungfernstieg, alleys and open places, as well as noise and roaming around in hordes, is forbidden and will be punished severely, and these hordes will be disbursed. If the mischief in the Alster Hall or any similar establishments will start again, the guests will be asked to leave, the culprits will be arrested, and the establishment will be closed. The honorable council is optimistic, considering the often shown good will of local citizens, that the measures taken to uphold the peace … [Click Below for Full Description]

1835. Undated, published in Derby by Thomas Richardson, this seems to be an unrecorded chapbook of songs with no copies located on Copac or World Cat Thomas Richardson produced a number of recorded "Songster" titles including "Richardson's Choice Songster" 1834, "Richardson's New London Songster" 1833 "The London Songster" 1838, "Richardson's Universal Songster" 1836 although not dated its probable that this one also dates to the 1830s apart from the apparent scarcity of this particular title, what makes this one particularly interesting is the opening song on the first page titled "The Steam Arm" in which a veteran soldier who lost an arm in "The Battle of Waterloo" has an artificial Steam Powered Arm made, making him possibly the world's first bionic man, and part robot, the mechanical arm runs amok with a life of its own smashing through brick walls etc, he is caught by the police after nearly killing everyone in the immediate vicinity and while being sentence in court the arm knocks the judge out of his seat. A very early account of a steam powered robotic arm, predating Frank Reade and his Steam Man of the Prairies by a good few years and exceedingly scarce and seemingly unrecorded. the book is a small format paperback Chapbook style printing with yellow printed covers measuring 5.5 inches by 3.5 inches approx., running to 12 printed pages, The covers have noticeable staining and creasing wear along with an edge tear with no loss to upper cover, curling to corners on covers, internally old ownership name to inside front cover, some brown staining to top edges of openin … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

1835. The Failure of British Forces in the War of 1812[War of 1812]. Mitchell, John.[Autograph Manuscript] British Troops in America: Colonel Napier's Speech at Bath.[London]: 1835. 6 pp. with integral address. Folio. 10.5 x 16.5 inches. Good. Separated at folds, edge worn and torn, a few chips, one affecting a few words at the end of about a dozen lines of text, light soiling. Item #44071 Manuscript with numerous corrections and additions concerning the failure of the British military in the War of 1812. In late 1835 then Colonel William Francis Patrick Napier (1785-1860) member of the British Army and a military historian, gave speech at Bath which the Sunday Times reported, claiming he had criticized the British soldiers in the War of 1812 as failing because they "stood as patriots and freemen, on less firm and less elevated ground than the Americans themselves" which John Mitchell notes at the very beginning of this article published in the January 1836 issue of "United Service Journal and Naval and Military Service Magazine" (pp. 84-92). Defending the soldiers, Mitchell goes on to launch an attack on Napier's speech and the British command and their tactics. "The failure of the British troops at New Orleans was as complete as possible; but patriotism or want of patriotism, had nothing to do with the business.... The military policy of England, guided by men, ignorant alike of the strength and the weakness of armies, swayed besides by the influence of philanthropic and economical patriots, whose evil counsel fell, like a death-bearing pestilence, on the ranks of the arm … [Click Below for Full Description]

Boston Chemical Printing Company, 1835. Sunday Lessons No. 1 [Early Appearance of "Mary Had a Little Lamb," Printed on Cloth] Author: Published: Boston; Boston Chemical Printing Company, Binding: Condition: (please see full item description for details) Description: Undated, but ca. 1835. Handkerchief printed in black on white cotton. 10.25 x 11.25 inches. Text in three columns, decorative border, small illustration at the head of each column. A very good example, with some scattered foxing. Technological developments of the early nineteenth century made printed textiles available in greater quantity and at a lower price than ever before. Not only were textile companies offering new printed fabrics, but traditional publishers of books, pamphlets, broadsides, etc., began printing some items on cloth. As Diane Affleck of the American Textile History Museum explains, "Textile prints produced by paper printers usually combined text with images or other decorative elements to create a publication which, like a broadside, was self-contained and printed on a single sheet, in this case, fabric instead of paper. Some prints had no purpose other than as a keepsake or souvenir, while others functioned, at least in theory, as handkerchiefs. The subjects of the textiles were generally commemorative, persuasive, or instructional" (Textiles in New England II, p. 195). This handkerchief, which falls into the "instructional" category, was one of several produced for children by the Boston Chemical Printing Company. It is of particular note for including "Mary's Lamb," the poem which would c … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas of Britanny; Michel, Francisque, ed.
Londres: Guillaume Pickering, 1835. First edition. Hardcover. 2 volumes. 12mo. Illustrated with lithographs of the manuscripts, some with initials colored by hand in red and blue. Title page in Volume 1 in both English and French.. Publisher's original cloth in a small sand grain design. This is clearly Winterbottom's Type 'M' (Tomlinson). Krupp (p.30) notes this as San1, but without a Winterbottom cross-reference. She ascribes an appearance date of 1850 for this early design; to find it on books published in 1835 is a treat. That it would appear on a Pickering work should be no surprise. Pickering started experimenting with bookcloth as early as 1823 through his binder, Archibald Leighton, who was responsible for many innovations in the design and use of early bookcloth. The text constitutes mainly the remains of Thomas of Britain's Tristan Romance, composed in the 12th and 13th centuries in Norman French and Greek, here edited and rendered in the originals by Fr. MIchel. This is a very good set; the printed paper labels are darkened a bit and have old numerals handwritten on them. There are also what appear to be private library shelf stickers at the bases of the spines, but we have been unable to discover their provenance, nor are there any notes in the books themselves. Endpapers lightly foxed and corners bent but still sturdy in their original cloth binding. p Fairly scarce. A third volume with additional Tristan fragments was issued in 1839, not present her. There is an old note on the front free endpaper indicating that this is one of 250 copies, but we have not been … [Click Below for Full Description]

EVERETT, Edward
n.p.: , [1835]. n.p., [1835]. The next day he wrote Lincoln saying, "I should be glad if I could flatter myself that I came as near the central idea of the occasion in two hours as you did in two minutes."

Lodi, Tipografia Orcesi, 1835 - 1836. 2 volumi in - 8°, riuniti in m. pelle coeva, dorso decorato in oro. (4), xi, (i), 67, (1) pp.; xiv, 60 pp., 1 f.b. "By his demonstration of the parasitic nature of the muscardine disease of silkworms, Bassi is regarded as the founder of the doctrine of pathogenic micro - organism. He is rather neglected by medical historians." (Garrison & Morton, 2532). Hirsch, I, p. 372. Bulloch, History of bacteriology, pp. 159 - 61 e 351. Penso, La conquista del mondo invisibile, pp. 279 - 81. Riquier, Agostino Bassi e la sua opera, passim.

Samuel] [WOODWARD
1835. [Railroads, Topography, Transportation] ~ [WOODWARD, Samuel] The Barclay Tract in Pennsylvania: Surveyed & Described by Samuel Rhoads Jr. 1835 [s.i.]. [s.n.], [1835]. Folio. Manuscript on paper. [2], 25pp, [2], with eight further blank leaves. With a hand-illustrated and coloured folding plan of the Barclay Tract. Contemporary red half-morocco, marbled boards, gilt. Extremities rubbed. Later armorial bookplate of Henry Birkbeck to FEP, short tear to centre fold of map, very occasional light spotting. A manuscript account of the environs of the Barclay Tract, a coal mining operation within the township of Franklin, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Undertaken by Quaker Samuel Rhoads Jr., this survey is comprised of three letters descriptive of the topography of the area embellished with a hand-illustrated plan depicting those land parcels that have been cultivated, and those devoted to mining activity. Rhoads, writing from Blockley, Philadelphia, addresses railroad pioneer and fellow Quaker Joseph Pease (1799-1872) who seemingly commissioned Rhoads to conduct the review in order to ascertain whether the land was suitable for connection to the existing rail network. An extract from a Railroad report read in the House of Commons 20th March 1835 provides distances of the nearby Williamsport & Elmira Railway, and the details of a proposed line between New York and Lake Erie. The letters were copied by, and under the care of, published East-Anglian historian and geologist Samuel Woodward (1790-1838). Based in Norwich, Woodward supported himself by working as clerk at Gurney's … [Click Below for Full Description]
