Paris: Pacini [PNs 3148, -52, -54, -57, 57(B), -58-59, -70-72]], 1835. Probable first complete edition, first issue. Lippmann p. 390. Crawford p. 33. "In its harmony and scoring I puritani is Bellini's most sophisticated opera - a direct consequence, no doubt, of its having been written for a Parisian audience.         Annual Register of Indian Affairs

1835 - MCCOY, Isaac. The Annual Register of Indian Affairs within the Indian (or Western) Territory. No. 1. Published by Isaac McCoy. Shawanoe Baptist Mission House, Ind. Ter. January 1, 1835. [Kansas Territory]: Shawanoe Mission, J. Meeker, Printer, 1835. Slim octavo, original printed tan stiff paper wrappers, stitched as issued, uncut; pp.48. Housed in custom windowed portfolio. $7500.First edition, association copy of the first work printed in English in the Kansas territory, Isaac McCoy's self-published 1835 Annual Register of Indian Affairs championing Indian rights, from the library of Jacksonian Congressman Samuel Beardsley, inscribed on the front wrapper, "Hon. Saml. Beardsley, Washi""D.C." (inscription partially trimmed), with prospectus printed on wrappers.Isaac McCoy was appointed a Baptist missionary to Indians and Illinois in 1817 and there formed "the idea of a permanent Indian country, west of Missouri." An 1824 trip to Washington, D.C. to present his plan to Secretary of War Calhoun, "marked the shift in his career from a missionary to a political lobbyist". McCoy favored a policy of negotiation that respected the tribes' right to ratify or to reject removal treaties, but he came to be convinced that removing the Indians from the lands east of the Mississippi was the only way to save them. McCoy's proposal of an Indian state called for the consolidation of all the Indians in the West and the dissolution of the tribal organization". In 1828 he was also appointed to a commission to manage the removal of the Ottawa and the Miami to the West". [and] came to support Andrew Jackson's removal policy, although he criticized its emphasis on removal rather than colonization". In May 1830, McCoy was commissioned to survey the boundaries of the domains assigned to the various Indian tribes" (ANB). In1833, McCoy's son Jotham brought a printing press to his father's Kansas mission and "in January 1835 McCoy issued from this press the first of four numbers of The Annual Register of Indian Affairs." McCoy later traveled to Washington "several times to plead the Indians' cause, reporting directly to government agencies" (Wagner-Camp 81). This rare first edition of his first publication on Indian Affairs was published to argue for the better treatment of Indians by presenting "correct historical sketches of the past, and information respecting their present condition," in hopes "that it is not too late to rescue from ruin, the scattered remnants of this noble race of men." This "first number" of four pamphlets was issued on a subscription basis. Although McCoy intended for a continuing series of pamphlets to be published, the series ended in 1848 with number four. This "first number was the first English book printed in Kansas" (Howes M67). Sabin 43110; Graff 2586-8; Wagner-Camp 38, 46a, 81. This association copy is inscribed on the front wrapper to Samuel Beardsley, who represented New York in the United States Congress (1831-36), served as Chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary and and returned to Congress (1843-44) before his appointment to the New York Supreme Court (1844-47).Text generally fresh with light foxing, faint margin dampstaining, bit of loss to upper right corner of front wrapper, tape repairs to wrapper. An extremely good association copy of this rare work. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Narrative of a Second Voyage in Search of a North-West Passage

1835 - ROSS, John. Narrative of a Second Voyage in Search of a North-West Passage, and of a Residence in the Arctic Regions". Including the Reports of Commander, now Captain, James Clark Ross and the Discovery of the Northern Magnetic Pole. London: A.W. Webster, 1835. Thick quarto, original patterned blue cloth rebacked with original spine laid down, gilt-stamped spine label. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $4000.First edition, large-paper copy, of Ross' Narrative, with 30 full-page charts, copper plates and lithographs (nine with vivid original hand-coloring), and a large color-outlined folding map of the region."In 1829, frustrated by the lack of progress [in search of a northwest passage], a philanthropic gin distiller, Felix Booth, sponsored John Ross's second expedition. With his nephew James Clark Ross as second-in-command, Ross sailed down Prince Regent Sound in search of an opening to the west. The two Rosses mapped James Ross Strait and parts of King William Island and in 1831 James located the Magnetic North Pole. The Ross expedition then disappeared in the ice-bound Gulf of Boothia until 1833" (Goetzman & Williams, 186). A "wonderfully interesting narrative of human endurance, triumphing over the most awful peril and suffering. The sumptuous printing which makes every page a picture has even its luxury enhanced by the splendid steel engravings and lithographs. The former are so excellent as to be worthy of preservation as gems of art" (Field 1321). "Let no man imagine that he knows what a present is worth," Ross wrote, "until he has found what happiness can be produced by a blue bead, a yellow button, a needle, or a piece of an old iron hoop" (Lehane, 113).         View of New York City as It Appeared on the Eve of the Fire, 1835

      - Gouache on paper Paper size: 28" x 20" Signed, dated, and inscribed at (l.c.): ‘View of the City of New York as it appeared on the evening of the fire 16th Dec 1835 from the mill at Brooklyn’; (at l.r.): ‘From N. Calyo. 402.Broadway.N.York’ References: Patterson, Margaret Sloane: ‘Nicolino Calyo and His Paintings of the Great Fire of New York, December 16th and 17th, 1835," The American Art Journal, XIV (Spring 1982), pp. 4-22. This striking original watercolor of New York is the work of Nicolino Calyo, a talented immigrant artist who captured a unique view of the city during one of the most epochal events of the nineteenth century. In his View of New York as It Appeared on the Eve of the Fire, 1835, the artist rendered the blaze in Manhattan from the shoreline in Brooklyn. The sky is drenched a dramatic red as the fire licks the night sky. A handful of spectators crowd at the waters edge and beneath the windmill at the right, watching the devastation. Although volunteer fire companies promptly arrived at the scene of the blaze on the night of December 16th, 1835, New York was gripped by the coldest weather recorded in decades. The firemen were virtually powerless as their water supplies and horses froze in the sub-zero clime. The fire, which began at a dry goods establishment of Comstock and Andrews at 25 Mercer (now Beaver) Street, raged out of control for fifteen hours. In its wake, nearly the whole of the First Ward of Manhattan, the heart of New York’s commercial, financial, and civic district, was consumed. Calyo’s career reflects a restless spirit of enterprise and adventure. Descended from the line of the Viscontes di Calyo of Calabria, the artist was the son of a Neapolitan army officer. Calyo received his formal training in art at the Naples Academy, and his career took shape amidst the political turbulence of early-19th century Italy, Spain, and France. He fled Naples after choosing the loosing side of struggles of 1820-21, and by 1829 was part of an Italian exile community in Malta. This was the keynote of a peripatetic life that saw the artist travel through Europe, to America, within America, perhaps to Europe again, and back to America. Calyo’s forte was close observation of people and places, meticulously rendered in the precise topographical tradition of his fellow countrymen, Canaletto and Francesco Guardi. In search of artistic opportunity, Calyo left Malta and, by 1834, was on the opposite side of the Atlantic Ocean in Baltimore, Maryland. He rapidly drew attention for his artistically rendered visual images of familiar locales, executed with a degree of polish and skill that was second nature for artists trained in the European academic tradition. Calyo arrived and settled in New York in 1835, inspired by the sights of the flourishing metropolis. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Nouveaux Exercices de Mathématiques [& title to Part 8]: Mémoire sur la Dispersion de la Lumière

iv, 24 pp.; 25-56 pp.; 57-116 pp.; 117-180 pp.; 181-204 pp.; , iv, 205-236 pp. Eight parts in six livraisons. Large 4to, orig. pink printed wrappers (two spines a bit defective, upper wrapper of the final livraison detached), uncut. Prague: 1835 [Parts 1-7] & J.F. Calve, 1836 [Part 8]. First edition of this important memoir in which Cauchy explains the dispersion of light on the basis of the undulatory theory. It completes Fresnel's researches on the subject. Cauchy was the first to attempt to work out a mathematical basis for the properties of ether. This book was written and printed in Prague where Cauchy resided as tutor to the Duc de Bordeaux after the abdication of his father, King Charles X. The publication of this work is somewhat complicated and has been well-explained by Roger Gaskell in his Catalogue 17 (1996), item 7 (this set): "The original parts are important for understanding how the work was originally published. The Mémoire occupies the first 8 'livraisons' (in 6 separately wrappered parts, livraisons 1, 2, 3-4, 5-6, 7, 8) of a series entitled Nouveaux exercices de mathématiques of which no more was published. The first livraison contains a title-page for Nouveaux exercices and a foreword in which Cauchy explains that it is a sequel to his Exercices de mathématiques published in Paris, and Résumés analytiques published in Turin: the title-page for the Mémoire itself appears in the 8th livraison with a foreword signed by the Société Royale des Sciences de Prague, claiming full credit for publishing 'une édition aussi élégante et correcte que possible.' Cauchy himself initially undertook the publication of the series and the Nouveaux exercices title gives no publisher's name, but when it was taken over by the Société Royale it was distributed by J.G. Calve whose name appears on the Mémoires title-page. The work is sometimes catalogued as Nouveaux exercises, sometimes as Mémoire sur la Dispersion de la Lumière; the former title-page and Cauchy's foreword as sometimes discarded." Fine set preserved in a box. Scarce. Minor foxing.

Bekanntmachung.

1835. 8vo. 1 p. with integral address panel. In French, to Anténor Joly; about her novel, Engelwald "[...] Please allow me to complete my novel before I see about selling it. I have done some calculations and found out that the courier did not offer me much less than I could ask for somewhere else, without being greedy. However, judging by reasonable standards your figures are somewhat too low. The difference is not so big that I might reject your offer, but it will give us the opportunity to discuss it a little further before we conclude a deal [...]. So I am going to finish my story and in a few days, I will write to you it is finished, come and see me". - On stationery with her embossed initials.

History of the War in the Peninsula and in the South of France from the Year 1807 to the Year 1814

the Year 1814, 1835 Book. VERY GOOD INDEED. Hardcover. The 3rd edition of thisfamous history of the British victory in in the Iberian Peninsula, by an officer who served with distinction in the campaign. Napier saw most of the major actions: his health was permanently damaged on the retreat to Corunna; he was present on the famous march to Talavera; he was wounded on the Coa; he was shot near the spine at Cazal Nova; he was recommended for a brevet majority after his bravery in pursuing the French in their retreat from Torres Vedras; he was present at the storming of Badajoz; he commanded the 43rd regiment at Salamanca; he commanded a brilliant attack at the battles of the Nive. In the occupation of France following the battle of Waterloo he determined to improve his education; amazingly his literacy was very poor up until this time. He was persuaded by his friends to write this history, having determined himself to become an artist. The Duke of Wellington himself assisted greatly, handing over the papers of Joseph Bonaparte which were captured at Vittoria. They were decoded by Napier's wife. The first volume was published in 1828, and it was by far the most popular contemporary account. This edition includes 55maps and plans. Additionally, replies to the attacks of his various political and personaldetractors are prefixed to the volumes; Napier was not shy of speaking his mind and ruffling feathers in his accounts. Bound by M. Bell, of Richmond. With half titles in volumes V andVI. A handsomely presented early edition of this unparalleld first hand account. Collated: complete with 24 books in six volumes. Condition: In half calf with marbled boards. Externally sound though with some light general wear and marking to the boards and spines. Internally, volumes I, III, and IV are lightly foxed here and there. The other volumes are generally clean. All are a little age toned towards the edges. Firmly bound. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.
