Effingham Wilson. 1835 - FIRST EDITION. Half title; lightly browned with the occasional spot. Orig. drab boards; some sl. rubbing to extremities, corners sl. bumped. A superb copy in the original boards. In a sl. rubbed half green morocco slip-case. Wise 2. Some copies were issued with a paper label and a 12-page publisher?s catalogue dated January 1836. The subject of Paracelsus, the 16th century philosopher and scientist, was suggested by the Count Amédée de Ripert-Monclar, to whom Browning dedicated this work. The Cambridge History of English and American Literature describes Paracelsus as ?the most miraculous and inexplicable of all the exhibitions of Browning?s genius. The promise it contained, with all the poet?s lasting greatness, was not fulfilled. Its form and artistic manner, the lineaments and the movements of the mind which work within it, the noble passions which moved the poet and the faith which inspired and controlled him?these are pre-eminently illuminating to the student of Browning and by far the best introduction to all he strove to do.?         Principles of geology: being an inquiry how far the former changes of the Earth's surface are referable to causes now in operation. The Fourth edition.

John Murray 1835 - London, 12mo, four volumes: [xviii, [2], 406 p., frontispiece and 2 plates (1 colored); [4], 465 p., 4 p. publisher's ads, and 4 plates; [4], 455 p. and 3 plates (1 colored); [4], 456 p. and 6 plates (2 colored); plus 164 text woodcuts]. Half-titles in volumes 2, 3 and 4, as called for. ***CONTENT: Sir Charles Lyell (1797-1875), a Scottish-born naturalist, was the foremost geologist of his day. He was an astute field observer and theorist, and a prolific author. He stands second only to James Hutton in establishing and advancing 'modern' geological understandings. Lyell's most important book, "Principles of Geology", popularized Hutton's concept of uniformitarianism - the idea that the Earth was formed and sculpted by slow, steady forces acting over a long period of time, rather than by sudden, cataclysmic events, such as the Biblical flood. The central argument in "Principles" is that the 'present is the key to the past' - features seen in rocks can be explained by comparison to geologic processes still in operation. Lyell's view that geologic change was due to the steady accumulation of minute changes over enormously long spans of time strongly influenced the young Charles Darwin, particularly in his thinking about the biological processes of evolution. If the Earth's surface constantly changes (which it does), it stands to reason that species must either adapt to those changes or perish. These volumes eloquently explain geologic processes: volcanoes, earthquakes, glaciation, mountain-building, erosion, deposition, rivers, floods, tides, coral reefs, fossil formation, extinction, etc. in accord with the concept of a very old Earth. "Principles" went through 12 editions during Lyell's lifetime; he used each edition to incorporate additional information, rearrange existing material, and revisit old conclusions in light of new evidence. For his contributions to science, Lyell was knighted in 1848. ***CONDITION: This is a VG set, entirely complete and bound in the original cloth with the original printed-paper title labels on the backstrips. The covers are sound but lightly rubbed at the extremities; backstrips sunned and worn at the head and foot, title labels rubbed but still largely legible. Joints and hinges quite solid, bindings very firm. The text pages are typically fresh, clean and bright; a few plates show light foxing but the hand-colored plates are clean and bright. Old inked signatures on the front endpapers, but no external ownership markings. A very nice set of a rare treatise in the original state. BMNH 1199. Ward and Carozzi 1409. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Horti medici Amstelaedamensis plantarum usualium catalogus.Amsterdam, [1724]. 12mo. With engraved frontispiece by Jan Goeree showing the gates to the Hortus Medicus and a woodcut Amsterdam coat of arms on the title-page. 18th-century boards covered with red paste-paper.

      - Pritzel 1835; STCN (7 copies); D.O. Wijnands, Botany of the Commelins, 1983, p. 13. Third enlarged edition of a catalogue of medicinal plants at the Hortus Medicus in Amsterdam, containing 441 numbered descriptions. It is the last of three editions produced by Commelin (1667/68-1731), whose uncle Jan Commelin had been the garden's botanist to his death in 1692. Caspar was appointed to the same post in 1695 and professor of botany in 1706. The title-page is undated, but the preliminaries contain both Commelin's 1698 note to the reader from the first edition and his new note to the reader dated 15 March 1724 for the present edition. The garden's new entry gate was built in 1715 and Goeree engraved the present frontispiece showing it for the second edition of Commelin's catalogue, published in that year. This work should not be confused with Commelin's Hortus medici Amstelodamensis plantae rariores et exoticae, 1706, a supplement to his uncle's Hortus medici Amstelodamensis rariorum tam orientalis, 1697-1701.With library stamp. Lacking the second of the 2 final blank leaves. In good condition. Most extensive edition of Commelin's catalogue of medicinal plants in the Amsterdam botanical garden.

"One of the few books of travel in the United States worth reading" (Raines). "Incredibly important, although little known, . one of the first theoretical and ethnographic examinations of democracy as a political and cultural institution" (John-Michael Rivera, in the introduction to the 2005 English edition). (cgc) T.P.L. 1808. A.B. 14866 &14863. Lande 1426. Sabin 73381. Waterston p61. The magnetic polewas discovered during Ross's 1829 voyage, and important geologicaland zoological data collected. Ross reports in careful detail themeans of surviving Arctic winters; he was intent on salvaging hisreputation, damaged by his failure to recognize, in 1818, thepossibility of moving through Lancaster Sound. Although the longperiod when his ships were out of touch with home necessitated thedispatch of search parties, this later voyage did bring him fame.(Waterson). Owing to the mistaken contention of the first voyage,Ross was not offered another command and this expedition wasprivately financed. It resulted in the discovery of King WilliamSound and the extensive survey of Boothia Peninsula, and thediscovery of the magnetic pole by James Clark Ross. The dietaryimportance of fresh meat and oil in the particular climate wasfirst ascertained on this voyage so that all but three men survivedfour winters and the loss of the Victory. (AB). .

Nouveaux Exercices de Mathématiques [& title to Part 8]: Mémoire sur la Dispersion de la Lumière

      - iv, 24 pp.; 25-56 pp.; 57-116 pp.; 117-180 pp.; 181-204 pp.; , iv, 205-236 pp. Eight parts in six livraisons. Large 4to, orig. pink printed wrappers (two spines a bit defective, upper wrapper of the final livraison detached), uncut. Prague: 1835 [Parts 1-7] & J.F. Calve, 1836 [Part 8]. First edition of this important memoir in which Cauchy explains the dispersion of light on the basis of the undulatory theory. It completes Fresnel's researches on the subject. Cauchy was the first to attempt to work out a mathematical basis for the properties of ether. This book was written and printed in Prague where Cauchy resided as tutor to the Duc de Bordeaux after the abdication of his father, King Charles X. The publication of this work is somewhat complicated and has been well-explained by Roger Gaskell in his Catalogue 17 (1996), item 7 (this set): "The original parts are important for understanding how the work was originally published. The Mémoire occupies the first 8 'livraisons' (in 6 separately wrappered parts, livraisons 1, 2, 3-4, 5-6, 7, 8) of a series entitled Nouveaux exercices de mathématiques of which no more was published. The first livraison contains a title-page for Nouveaux exercices and a foreword in which Cauchy explains that it is a sequel to his Exercices de mathématiques published in Paris, and Résumés analytiques published in Turin: the title-page for the Mémoire itself appears in the 8th livraison with a foreword signed by the Société Royale des Sciences de Prague, claiming full credit for publishing 'une édition aussi élégante et correcte que possible.' Cauchy himself initially undertook the publication of the series and the Nouveaux exercices title gives no publisher's name, but when it was taken over by the Société Royale it was distributed by J.G. Calve whose name appears on the Mémoires title-page. The work is sometimes catalogued as Nouveaux exercises, sometimes as Mémoire sur la Dispersion de la Lumière; the former title-page and Cauchy's foreword as sometimes discarded." Fine set preserved in a box. Scarce. Minor foxing. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
