A Selection of Games at Chess, actually palyed by Philidor and his contemporaries; now first published from the original manuscr

London: Sherwood, Gilbert & Piper , 1835. xvi+110 pages with frontispiece and illustrations. Small octavo (7" x 4 3/4") bound in original publsihers green cloth with label to front cover. With notes and additions by George Walker. Provenance gift inscription to Birmingham Chess Club on title. Subsequently reprinted, without notes, in Walker's Chess Studies (1844). Whyld & Ravilious: 1835:4) First edition. As a writer on the game, George Walker's reputation was European. His first publication, a pamphlet of twenty-four pages, on New Variations in the Muzio Gambit (1831), was followed in less than a year by his New Treatise, which gradually supplanted the chess Studiesof Peter Pratt (1803, &c.) and the far from thorough Treatise by J. H. Sarratt (1808) as amended by William Lewis in 1821; of the New Treatise a German version went through several editions. Walker's style was bright and often witty. To later editions was appended an excellent bibliography; but this has been almost entirely superseded by the Schachlitteratur of A. Van der Linde (1880). Walker's fine chess library was dispersed by Sotheby on 14 May 1874 (Westminster Papers, 1 May 1874). He was also a benefactor to the cause of chess as a founder and promoter of clubs, notably the Westminster Chess Club (1832â€"1843), famous as the battle-ground of Macdonnell and Labourdonnais, and of Popert and Staunton, and its successor in reputation, the St. George's Club, which still flourishes.Condition:New spine, corners bumped, front cover label soiled with wear to edges, some light foxing. A very good copy.

Autograph Letter Signed ("R.S.") to his friend and benefactor, Charles Williams Wynn, declining a dinner invitation

      W. Terring, 1835. One page, in ink. 1 vols. 12mo. Cello-taped at edges, one edge chipped, with loss of a letter. One page, in ink. 1 vols. 12mo. To Friend His Friend Charles Williams Wynn, M.P. Wynn was an old college friend with whom Southey maintained a close relationship for the est of his life: "i cannot dine with you on Sunday, because Mr ___ (?) will be at Richmond, & Sunday is the only day during my short ___ (?) or that he dines with his family. Yesterday brought me a favourable account from York. She now talks and talks of my coming, he says she is afraid "the doctor will not think her well enough to leave" ... tomorrow I go to Miss Bowles ... " "Wynn matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, on 24 Dec. 1791, graduated B.A. in 1795, and M.A. in 1798. On 5 July 1810, the first year of office of his uncle, Lord Grenville, as chancellor of the university, he was created D.C.L. His rooms as an undergraduate were in `Skeleton Corner,' where Southey, who had made his friendship at Westminster in 1788 and kept it through life, used often to visit him. Wynn, though not a rich man, made Southey an allowance of 160l. per annum, beginning with the last quarter of 1796 and ending in 1807, when, through the same friendly influence, a net pension of 144l. a year was bestowed on him by the government. In 1801 Wynn hoped to obtain for his friend the post of secretary to some Italian legation, but was disappointed. Southey in 1805 dedicated to him the poem of `Madoc.'" - DNB Miss Bowles, of course, was Caroline Anne Bowles -- his friend, collaborator on "Robin Hood", and future wife.

London: Orlando Hodgson, 1835. [2],[9]-463,[1]pp. plus thirteen plates. Original green publisher's cloth, stamped in blind and gilt. Corners bumped, light wear to binding. Some light scattered foxing, but a near fine copy. An undated, octavo edition, likely issued close on the heels of the first edition of 1835. Despite the failure of his earlier trip in 1818, Ross set out in 1829 in the small ship, Victory, to find a northwest passage, but the boat had to be abandoned in 1832. Ross and his party were eventually rescued in the summer of 1833 in Lancaster Sound. In the meantime, Capt. George Back had set out in search of Ross. The greatest scientific yield of the trip was the discovery of the Magnetic Pole. Sabin calls for eleven plates, though this copy has thirteen. ARCTIC BIBLIOGRAPHY 14866 (ref). SABIN 73381.

A Comprehensive Atlas Geographical, Historical & Commercial

Wil. D. Thicknor/ Wiley & Long,, Boston/New York: 1835 - Lg 4to, period quarter sheep and marbled boards, marbled endpapers, illustrated with 66 engraved maps with hand colored outlines. Lacks spine, top cover detached and back cover almost detached, front free endpaper to frontispiece loosely laid in (alomost detached), occasional dampstains (including to title & fronstispiece), light foxing and soiling, a few margin tears, internally very good. Despite the somewhat poor condition of the binding, this is a rather scarce and attractive early American atlas. It contains several early maps, including 28 full page maps of the Americas, most pertaining to the United States. The map of the United States shows the Oregon Territory, but the Southwestern portion, including California and Texas shown as still belonging to Mexico. San Francisco Bay is oddly identified as the "Bay of Sir F[rancis] Drake." The eastern United States features its railroads and canals, and Michigan includes the "Huron District", which would be modern day Wisconsin. In addition to several other separate state maps, there are also maps of Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and India. Phillips 770. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]

Bel exemplaire. 1 vol. 8vo. 4 plates and 1 folding map. 19th century half calf. Rare First Edition of a journey to Brazil and Uruguay, written by Arsène Isabelle (1806?-1879). He arrived in Buenos Aires as a merchant, but in fact travelled through Argentina, Uruguay, the province of Rio Grande. The importance of this work lies in the fact that it is one of the few books of the time to describe the Rio Grande del Sul. 4 pl., 1 fold. chart. Fine copy.

Anti-Slavery Record

1835. First Edition . (SLAVERY) (GARRISON, William Lloyd). The Anti-Slavery Record. Volume I, January, 1835Â… [to] December, 1835. New-York: Published by R.G. Williams, For the American Anti-Slavery Society, 1835. Small octavo (4-3/4 by 7-1/4 inches), original blind-stamped brown cloth. $1650.First edition of Volume I of the 1835 Anti-Slavery Record, the groundbreaking first year of its brief three-year run, containing all 12 monthly issues (including the rare January-July first editions), issued by the American Anti-Slavery Society only two years after its founding at the direction of William Lloyd Garrison—hailed by Frederick Douglass as abolitionism's ""chief apostle""—complete with eleven woodcut-engraved images on monthly covers and appendix with two in-text engravings. The American Anti-Slavery Society (AASS), formed in 1833, was ""the single largest and most influential organization against slavery up the end of the Civil War"" (Rodriguez, Slavery in the United States I:162). Under the leadership of William Lloyd Garrison, its Constitution proclaimed its goal was ""the entire abolition of slavery in the United States."" Aside from ""Frederick Douglass, there is no more significant American reformer in the 19th centuryÂ… Garrison left a legacy like few others."" In 1835 the AASS first began publication of this Anti-Slavery Record, issued monthly in its brief three-year run through 1837. It was also, in 1835, that Garrison was nearly murdered in the streets by a Boston mob. To Douglass, Garrison would always be ""the 'chief apostle' of abolitionism"" (Blight in Stewart, William Lloyd Garrison, 1-10).This complete Volume I of the Anti-Slavery Record contains the first year's 12 issues. Featured are excerpts from newspapers and speeches, reports on the slave trade and slave auctions, contributions by abolitionists such as Timothy Weld, John Rankin and Elizur Wright, excerpts from Seabrook's proslavery Essay on the Management of Slaves (1834), and eyewitness accounts of the torture and murder of slaves. Of particular importance are the dramatic woodcut-engravings, rarely found together, with the first image appearing as issued in the February 1835 issue, depicting an ironic parade of manacled slaves herded by a man flashing a whip—a ""march of despair"" beneath an American flag that is ""carried by a hand literally in chains"" (emphasis in original). The AASS published the Emancipator, this Anti-Slavery Record (1835-1837) and its quarterly Anti-Slavery Magazine from its offices on New York's Nassau Street, where publishing agent R.G. Williams and his fellow abolitionists forged a powerful national anti-slavery front. In the South, mobs burned these and other antislavery publications and Williams would be indicted by an Alabama Grand Jury for inciting insurrection, with its governor unsuccessfully calling for Williams' extradition to the state for trial. First edition of ""Vol. 1, for 1835"": first editions of Nos 1-7 (January-July 1835), second editions of Nos. 8-12 (August-December 1835). Containing woodcut engravings for Nos. 2-12 (No. 1 as issued without engraving), along with Appendix containing two woodcut-engravings (162). As published without the separate issues' original wrappers. Only a few leaves with tiny bit of marginalia, minimal underlining.Text and plates generally fresh with lightest scattered foxing; text block expertly reinforced; faint rubbing, only light edge-wear to original blindstamped cloth.

        Constitution of the Abolition Society

1835. (SLAVERY). Constitution of the Abolition Society. No place, early 19th century. Broadside, measuring 8 by 13 inches, printed in double columns. $3500.Rare generic template of a broadside for an abolition society constitution, from the early days of their proliferation, with the original printer's registration nicks.Following the preamble, there are fourteen articles, with blank interruptions in two places where the name of the society and the place it meets could be added. Mainly concerned with governance and leadership structure, this constitution also provides, as its tenth article, the admonition that ""It shall be the duty of the members of this society to inculcate the doctrine, that freedom is the natural right of all men; and that every species of involuntary bondage, which is not the consequence of crime, is inconsistent with the true principles of Republicanism."" The printer's registration nicks at the margins are intriguing, suggesting this may have been used in typesetting customized constitutions at the request of individual societies as they were organized. Early pencil notations to verso. Leaf embrowned, with a small hole at the center affecting one word of text; small repair along fold. Quite rare.

        Morning Prayer [and] Evening Prayer.

Sydney: Jones, n.d., but circa, 1835. Pair of broadsides, each 450 x 390 mm.; mounted and framed. Beautiful examples of fine early printing in Sydney, unrecorded in this form. Possibly prepared for the Church Mission Society, these early broadsides were printed in Sydney at a time when virtually all religious tracts were printed in London. These two prayers for children - to be said in the morning and evening - are exceptionally scarce early examples of local Sydney printing.Regarding the publication of these prayers, it is known that Jones had prepared some comparable religious broadsides, apparently for use in Church Mission Society schools, such as a pair of Maori lesson sheets printed circa 1833, the first "Christ raiseth Lazarus to life" or "Ka wa-ka-a-ra-hia a Ra-ha-ru-hi e Te Ka-rai-ti"; and the second "Children brought to Christ" or "Ka mau-ria nga ta-ma-ri-ki ki Te Ka-rai-ti" (see Williams, A Bibliography of Printed Maori to 1900, no. 13).Given that the present sheets are of a similar size to the Maori examples, it is likely that these were prepared around the same time, possibly also for the Church Mission Society. This hypothesis is supported by a note in Ferguson accompanying four Maori language sheets (no. 1674): 'in the Dixson Collection are two separate sheets... One is a Morning Prayer, the other an Evening Prayer... They came to this collection among other papers from the collection of C.A. Ewen of New Zealand.' Ferguson gives a putative date of circa 1835 for those particular sheets (see also Williams, Bibliography, no. 12).Certainly their sentiments are touching and as relevant for their purpose today as they were in the early nineteenth century: 'Keep us from wicked thoughts and bad tempers; make us try to learn all that we are taught' (from Morning Prayer); and from Evening Prayer: 'Make us try to remember all that we have learned to-day'. Of the handful of locally printed educational works which predate these broadsides, very few have survived; indeed many are known only through advertisements in newspapers of the day. These ephemeral broadsides are rare survivors. Fine.

The Dandy's Toilet, or, How to be a Beau

(England, 1835. (4)pp., + 8ff. Original manuscript set of costume overlays depicting the evolution of a "Youth just ceased to grow" into a "Dandy quite complete." The Youth's ambition is to be a "Beau," and in each successive overlay, he puts on more of the trappings of dandyism until his costume is in place, with black velvet stock (or cravat), corset, boots, pantaloons, coat, whiskers, mustache, wig, and hat. The overlays are hand-drawn and colored in a caricaturish style, with a hole to show the Youth's face below, and they are accompanied by a four-page hand-written account in rhyme of the Youth's transformation, which builds on itself with each additional article of clothing. The hourglass shape of the Youth's frock coat and his pantaloons date the set to the period between 1825 and 1835. His coat is made by famous Savile Row tailors Henry Poole & Co. and once he has finished his transformation, the Youth is ready to lounge on Regent Street. Minor wear to booklet and light spotting to overlays, else fine. Housed in cloth chemise. (Jane Austen's World; Regency Men's Fashion; Valsin, Ellie, Men's Fashion ca. 1830 Coats).
