QUINZE ANNÉES D'UN PROSCRIT. [4 volumes].

1835 - Paris, Dufey, 1835. NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]

Bel exemplaire. 1 vol. 8vo. 4 plates and 1 folding map. 19th century half calf. Rare First Edition of a journey to Brazil and Uruguay, written by Arsène Isabelle (1806?-1879). He arrived in Buenos Aires as a merchant, but in fact travelled through Argentina, Uruguay, the province of Rio Grande. The importance of this work lies in the fact that it is one of the few books of the time to describe the Rio Grande del Sul. 4 pl., 1 fold. chart. Fine copy.

Anti-Slavery Record

1835. First Edition . (SLAVERY) (GARRISON, William Lloyd). The Anti-Slavery Record. Volume I, January, 1835Â… [to] December, 1835. New-York: Published by R.G. Williams, For the American Anti-Slavery Society, 1835. Small octavo (4-3/4 by 7-1/4 inches), original blind-stamped brown cloth. $1650.First edition of Volume I of the 1835 Anti-Slavery Record, the groundbreaking first year of its brief three-year run, containing all 12 monthly issues (including the rare January-July first editions), issued by the American Anti-Slavery Society only two years after its founding at the direction of William Lloyd Garrison—hailed by Frederick Douglass as abolitionism's ""chief apostle""—complete with eleven woodcut-engraved images on monthly covers and appendix with two in-text engravings. The American Anti-Slavery Society (AASS), formed in 1833, was ""the single largest and most influential organization against slavery up the end of the Civil War"" (Rodriguez, Slavery in the United States I:162). Under the leadership of William Lloyd Garrison, its Constitution proclaimed its goal was ""the entire abolition of slavery in the United States."" Aside from ""Frederick Douglass, there is no more significant American reformer in the 19th centuryÂ… Garrison left a legacy like few others."" In 1835 the AASS first began publication of this Anti-Slavery Record, issued monthly in its brief three-year run through 1837. It was also, in 1835, that Garrison was nearly murdered in the streets by a Boston mob. To Douglass, Garrison would always be ""the 'chief apostle' of abolitionism"" (Blight in Stewart, William Lloyd Garrison, 1-10).This complete Volume I of the Anti-Slavery Record contains the first year's 12 issues. Featured are excerpts from newspapers and speeches, reports on the slave trade and slave auctions, contributions by abolitionists such as Timothy Weld, John Rankin and Elizur Wright, excerpts from Seabrook's proslavery Essay on the Management of Slaves (1834), and eyewitness accounts of the torture and murder of slaves. Of particular importance are the dramatic woodcut-engravings, rarely found together, with the first image appearing as issued in the February 1835 issue, depicting an ironic parade of manacled slaves herded by a man flashing a whip—a ""march of despair"" beneath an American flag that is ""carried by a hand literally in chains"" (emphasis in original). The AASS published the Emancipator, this Anti-Slavery Record (1835-1837) and its quarterly Anti-Slavery Magazine from its offices on New York's Nassau Street, where publishing agent R.G. Williams and his fellow abolitionists forged a powerful national anti-slavery front. In the South, mobs burned these and other antislavery publications and Williams would be indicted by an Alabama Grand Jury for inciting insurrection, with its governor unsuccessfully calling for Williams' extradition to the state for trial. First edition of ""Vol. 1, for 1835"": first editions of Nos 1-7 (January-July 1835), second editions of Nos. 8-12 (August-December 1835). Containing woodcut engravings for Nos. 2-12 (No. 1 as issued without engraving), along with Appendix containing two woodcut-engravings (162). As published without the separate issues' original wrappers. Only a few leaves with tiny bit of marginalia, minimal underlining.Text and plates generally fresh with lightest scattered foxing; text block expertly reinforced; faint rubbing, only light edge-wear to original blindstamped cloth.

        Constitution of the Abolition Society

1835. (SLAVERY). Constitution of the Abolition Society. No place, early 19th century. Broadside, measuring 8 by 13 inches, printed in double columns. $3500.Rare generic template of a broadside for an abolition society constitution, from the early days of their proliferation, with the original printer's registration nicks.Following the preamble, there are fourteen articles, with blank interruptions in two places where the name of the society and the place it meets could be added. Mainly concerned with governance and leadership structure, this constitution also provides, as its tenth article, the admonition that ""It shall be the duty of the members of this society to inculcate the doctrine, that freedom is the natural right of all men; and that every species of involuntary bondage, which is not the consequence of crime, is inconsistent with the true principles of Republicanism."" The printer's registration nicks at the margins are intriguing, suggesting this may have been used in typesetting customized constitutions at the request of individual societies as they were organized. Early pencil notations to verso. Leaf embrowned, with a small hole at the center affecting one word of text; small repair along fold. Quite rare.

        Morning Prayer [and] Evening Prayer.

Sydney: Jones, n.d., but circa, 1835. Pair of broadsides, each 450 x 390 mm.; mounted and framed. Beautiful examples of fine early printing in Sydney, unrecorded in this form. Possibly prepared for the Church Mission Society, these early broadsides were printed in Sydney at a time when virtually all religious tracts were printed in London. These two prayers for children - to be said in the morning and evening - are exceptionally scarce early examples of local Sydney printing.Regarding the publication of these prayers, it is known that Jones had prepared some comparable religious broadsides, apparently for use in Church Mission Society schools, such as a pair of Maori lesson sheets printed circa 1833, the first "Christ raiseth Lazarus to life" or "Ka wa-ka-a-ra-hia a Ra-ha-ru-hi e Te Ka-rai-ti"; and the second "Children brought to Christ" or "Ka mau-ria nga ta-ma-ri-ki ki Te Ka-rai-ti" (see Williams, A Bibliography of Printed Maori to 1900, no. 13).Given that the present sheets are of a similar size to the Maori examples, it is likely that these were prepared around the same time, possibly also for the Church Mission Society. This hypothesis is supported by a note in Ferguson accompanying four Maori language sheets (no. 1674): 'in the Dixson Collection are two separate sheets... One is a Morning Prayer, the other an Evening Prayer... They came to this collection among other papers from the collection of C.A. Ewen of New Zealand.' Ferguson gives a putative date of circa 1835 for those particular sheets (see also Williams, Bibliography, no. 12).Certainly their sentiments are touching and as relevant for their purpose today as they were in the early nineteenth century: 'Keep us from wicked thoughts and bad tempers; make us try to learn all that we are taught' (from Morning Prayer); and from Evening Prayer: 'Make us try to remember all that we have learned to-day'. Of the handful of locally printed educational works which predate these broadsides, very few have survived; indeed many are known only through advertisements in newspapers of the day. These ephemeral broadsides are rare survivors. Fine.

The Dandy's Toilet, or, How to be a Beau

(England, 1835. (4)pp., + 8ff. Original manuscript set of costume overlays depicting the evolution of a "Youth just ceased to grow" into a "Dandy quite complete." The Youth's ambition is to be a "Beau," and in each successive overlay, he puts on more of the trappings of dandyism until his costume is in place, with black velvet stock (or cravat), corset, boots, pantaloons, coat, whiskers, mustache, wig, and hat. The overlays are hand-drawn and colored in a caricaturish style, with a hole to show the Youth's face below, and they are accompanied by a four-page hand-written account in rhyme of the Youth's transformation, which builds on itself with each additional article of clothing. The hourglass shape of the Youth's frock coat and his pantaloons date the set to the period between 1825 and 1835. His coat is made by famous Savile Row tailors Henry Poole & Co. and once he has finished his transformation, the Youth is ready to lounge on Regent Street.         Constitution of the Abolition Society

, 1835. 1835. Quite rare.

Edition of two series published in 1835 and 1836 respectively. 36 steel engravings power the first volume and the second 40 or 76 prints engraved by various English writers and imrpimées on strong paper under curve. A large vignette title and frontispiece in the second volume, both dated 1836, they could not be part of the first. Half green morocco signed Boutigny. The second volume, although using the same irons (and the same paper sheet), and out of the same workshop is in a significantly different binding (connected two years later), half marine shagreen, the whole being finally more aesthetic than if the color was similar. Iron romantic long gilt. Beautiful blue marbled paper. Despite a few tiny foxing to the place of serpentes and margins, very fine copy. The choice of works gives pride to major sites in Europe, there is even the Mont Saint-Michel, and universal representations, like Don Quixote. Each work is accompanied by a blurb. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! Narrative of a Second Voyage in Search of a North-West Passage, and of a Residence in the Arctic Regions… Including the Reports of Commander, now Captain, James Clark Ross and the Discovery of the Northern Magnetic Pole. London: A.W. Webster, 1835. Thick quarto, original patterned blue cloth rebacked with original spine laid down, gilt-stamped spine label. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $4000.First edition, large-paper copy, of Ross’ Narrative, with 30 full-page charts, copper plates and lithographs (nine with vivid original hand-coloring), and a large color-outlined folding map of the region.“In 1829, frustrated by the lack of progress [in search of a northwest passage], a philanthropic gin distiller, Felix Booth, sponsored John Ross’s second expedition. With his nephew James Clark Ross as second-in-command, Ross sailed down Prince Regent Sound in search of an opening to the west. The two Rosses mapped James Ross Strait and parts of King William Island and in 1831 James located the Magnetic North Pole. The Ross expedition then disappeared in the ice-bound Gulf of Boothia until 1833” (Goetzman & Williams, 186). A “wonderfully interesting narrative of human endurance, triumphing over the most awful peril and suffering. The sumptuous printing which makes every page a picture has even its luxury enhanced by the splendid steel engravings and lithographs. The former are so excellent as to be worthy of preservation as gems of art” (Field 1321). “Let no man imagine that he knows what a present is worth,” Ross wrote, “until he has found what happiness can be produced by a blue bead, a yellow button, a needle, or a piece of an old iron hoop” (Lehane, 113).         The extraordinary ascent of the enchanted mountain, one of the Hymalaya range, in India, by Sir Edward Stanley, Bart., Eliza and Ellen, his daughters (an English family,) accompanied by the Count Rugantino (an Italian), Captain in Napoleon's Second Regiment of French Cuirassieurs

London: T. Gillard and S. Knights, 1835. First edition, 4to, pp. [7], 6-66; 13 hand-colored lithographs "illustrative of their adventures during the ascent;" contemporary cloth boards neatly rebacked in brown calf, gilt-lettered spine; leaf F2 creased and repaired (no loss), the text block is cockled throughout, but the coloring is vivid and the illustrations nothing short of unusual. In a maroon cloth slipcase. "This story...was told some years ago by the author to his brothers and sisters. The amusement it occasioned, has induced the relator, at a more advanced period, to offer it [to] the public, for the amusement of the rising generation" (Introduction). A note in OCLC tells us this is "a most extraordinary and lurid work, which never fails to surprise, originally 'told ... by the Author to his brothers and sisters'. The self-effacing author further notes that an 'active military life abroad and at home ... [in the Dragoon Guards] has prevented him making the improvement in drawing his masters might have expected'." Rare: just 2 copies in OCLC (Princeton and the Huntington). Not in NCBEL or Lowndes. Not found in NUC. Two copies have appeared at auction in the last 40 years, one of which was defective. A query in the March 7, 1908 issue of Notes and Queries by one R. S. B. attests to its rarity and offers a synopsis: I shall be glad to hear if anything is known about a curious book, published in 1835 (London, T. Gillard, 48, Strand), and bearing the above title, of which I possess a copy. The mountain was one of the "Hymalaya" range, and the ascent was accomplished by Sir Edward Stanley, Bt., aged about fifty, his daughters Eliza and Ellen, and Count Redmon Rugantino, an Italian, and a captain in Napoleon's 2nd Regiment of French Cuirassiers. The writer of the book is R. H. P., and it contains thirteen highly coloured drawings by him illustrating the adventures of the party. Sir Edward, who had led a thoughtless and extravagant life, was in want of 100,000/., whilst the Count also needed money to prove his title to the family estates. The object of the ascent was to reach the cave of the magician Pandanaba and obtain his assistance. This was successfully accomplished after many romantic and exciting adventures, and the necessary cash granted; whilst Ellen was assured of the safety of her cousin William, a lieutenant in the navy (whose ship was supposed to have been lost), the influence of his uncle, the admiral, being sufficient subsequently to get him made a post-captain. The book reads like a skit upon an incident in the history of some branch of the Stanley family, and a pencil note states that it relates to the Stanleys of Hooton in Cheshire; but I cannot identify the writer or any of the party. Amongst other characters appear the Master of the Dwarf; Alto and Bruno, two giants; and the Knight of the Sieve." The query was not answered.

Rare Autograph draft letter, unsigned, in Italian (Giovanni M. M. Ferretti, 1792-1878, Pope from 1846 who proclaimed the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception and whose Vatican Council formulated the Dogma of Papal Infallibility)

1835 - with transcription and translation, written when he was Bishop of Imola (1832-1846), south east of Bologna, to the Mayor ('Gonfalionere') of nearby Lugo, saying that "The Hospital of Santa Maria della Scaletta at Imola remains firm in its determination to abandon a long and expensive Case, such as that which has been argued up till now before the Sacred Tribunal of the Rota on behalf of the Exposed Children of the Diocese", he has already so assured the Pro-Legate of Ferrara, but explaining that the Congregation, in view of the unexpected setting down of a hearing for the 23rd and possible judgement, has asked for a postponement "solely to give the Municipality of Imola time to examine the merits of the Case", not just to prove that "such good Citizens as are Members of the Congregation" do not want "to be thought indifferent", adding that "the special administration set up by Monsignor the Pro-Legate will employ every means for the relief of the Hospital, whatever the Prior of Conselice may think to the contrary", he assures the Mayor that the Hospital will withdraw, and that the Communal Council will accept "the encyclical of the Secretariat of State", believing that most of the Communes of the Province of Ravenna "have by now made their payments . likewise . those of the Province of Ferrara", and ending with his blessing, 2 sides 12¾" x 8½", no place, 21th March From the collection of Hartwell de la Garde Grissell, 1839-1907, Oxford scholar and convert to Roman Catholicism, from 1869 a Chamberlain of Honour in personal attendance on Pius IX, Leo XIII and Pius X.         Théorie mathématique de la chaleur

(4), VIII, 327, (1) pages, 2 tableaux et 2 cartes, demi-cuir noir moderne à la bradel, tête dorée, "With Quetelet's work of 1835 a new era in statistics began. It presented a new technique of statistics or, rather, the first techique at all" (DSB) Première édition. "Quetelet's impact on nineteenth-century thinking can in a certain sense be compared with Descartes's in the seventeenth century".(DSB) "Althought the works of Bernoulli and Laplace foreshadowed the application of probability to the measurement of uncertainty in the social sciences, the works of Quetelet represent the first steps toward making this wish a practical reality" (Stigler) Des rousseurs pâles éparses
