A Collection of Two Autograph Letters Signed "W. Parry"; With Two Engraved Portraits of William Parry]: Sir Captn. W.E. Parry, R.N.

      - Letters: 1) Mattishall, 17 April 1835. Quarto (ca. 23x18 cm). 3 pp. Brown ink on watermarked laid paper, docketed on the 4th page. 2) Greenwich Hospital, 1 May 1854. 12mo (ca. 17,5x11,5 cm). Brown ink on laid paper, docketed in a different hand in the end of the letter. Both letters with fold marks, second letter slightly stained on the last blank page, otherwise a very good pair. Portraits: stipple engraved book plates, ca. 14x12 cm (from the European Magazine, London, 1821) and ca. 7,5x6 cm (by J. Limbird). Very good portraits. These two original letters written by a renowned Arctic explorer William Parry relate to the time of his government service in the 1830s and 1850s - as an Assistant Poor-Law Commissioner in the County of Norfolk (1835-1836) and a governor of the Greenwich Hospital (1854 until his death). In the first letter addressed to some "R. Kerrinson, Esq." Parry asks for the "Norwich Papers", as well as "a Copy of a small publication I have seen, containing the Parliamentary Returns of the Population &c. of the county, divided into Kindreds and Parishes." He is also looking forward to hear about "what you have done in compliance with the Order for Relief in kind". In the end Parry adds: "Will you ask the Governor to allow a Couple of the Copies of the Printed Notice to Overseas & to be pasted up in the Workhouse". The second letter was written by Parry in the rank of a governor of the Greenwich hospital to some Rev. Reginald Smith (as seen from the docket). The letter regards the donation made by the correspondent in favour of "Sailors", which needed to be forwarded to the Military Association. The letters are supplemented with two stipple engraved portraits of William Parry, both based on the famous Parry portrait by Samuel Drummond (National Portrait Gallery).

Wilson's Historical, Traditionary, and Imaginative Tales of the Borders, and of Scotland

40 -Edinburgh and Manchester- John Sutherland, and James Ainsworth, 1835. 40 -Edinburgh and Manchester- John Sutherland, and James Ainsworth, 1835 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The complete collection of the early victorian patriotic periodical Tales of the Borders. With numerous historical and fictional tales, surrounding or set within Scotland. Issued in 312 nos. (dated Nov. 8, 1834 through Oct. 24, 1840), and published in six vols. Volume one features an engraved frontispiece of John Mackay Wilson, engraved by J. Gellatly, from an original picture after his death. In the 19th century, it was not uncommon to see itinerant lecturersventuring across their countries, allowing great opportunities for them to meet with people, and listen to local stories and folk tales. It is during his itinerant lecturesthat John Mackay Wilson was inspired to write and compile the Tales of the Borders. In total, Wilson published in the first series, 48 numbers, totalling 73 tales. After his death, his brother James continued the series, followed by Alexander Leighton, a Scottish medical doctor and puritan preacher and pamphleteer who died under torture by King Charles I , because he attacked the Anglican Church in one of his pamphlet. Each weekly number came forth in small quarto size, with a blue cover and the arms of Berwick on the title-page. It was customary to have the Tales read aloud in the family circle; and often the reading was accomplished only in broken accents with intermittent sobs, while the sleeves of the auditors were much occupied in brushing away the sympathetic tears. Complete in six volumes. Condition: In half calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally, all are rubbed with wear to extremities and spines. Wax to the front board of volume six. Front joint to volume five is starting. All fronthingesare strained. Internally, binding is tender in places, with endpapers absent to volume six. some marginal age toning, and intermittently clean, with occasional instances of spotting. Instances of past worming to the rear of volume one. Overall: GOOD ONLY..

Memoires de Luther, Ecrits par Lui-Meme

Paris - LibrairieClassique de L. Hachette, 1835. Paris - LibrairieClassique de L. Hachette, 1835 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The fascinating memoirs of Martin Luther, translated and put in order by the eminent French historian Jules Michelet. Preceeded byan essay on thehistory of religion. Followed by biographies of Wicleff, Jean Huss, Erasme, Melanchton, Hutten and other predecessors and contemporaries of Luther. Complete in two volumes. Jules Michelet (1798-1874) was a French historian. When the revolution broke out, Michelet, unlike many other men of letters, did not attempt to enter active political life, and merely devoted himself more strenuously to his literary work. Uncompromisingly hostile as Michelet was to the empire, its downfall and the accompanying disasters of the country spurred him into activity. Not only did he write letters and pamphlets during the struggle but when it was over he set himself to complete the vast taks of his two great histories, which he accompanied with numerous other books, chiefly of erudition, such as the uvres choisies de Vico, the Mmoires de Luther crits par lui-mme, the Origines du droit franais, and somewhat later the le Procs des Templiers. Condition: In half calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally sound although somewhat rubbed. The hinges are slightly strained but holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Bright throughout with light scattered foxing, particularly to first and last few pages as usual. Copperplate ink signatures to front free-endpapers. Overall: GOOD..

Internally, firmly bound although front free endpaper detached but present. Foxing throughout as usual due to the paper used in the first. Tidemarks to the top margin of the first and last few pages.         The Poetical Works of Thomas Gray

53 - London - William Pickering, 1835. 53 - London - William Pickering, 1835 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An elegant set of The Poetical Works of Thomas Gray. Complete in five volumes. There is an engraved portrait of Gray to the verso of front free-end paper in volume I. Volume I also contains an essay on the life of Thomas Gray by John Mitford, followed by poems, posthumous poems and fragments, extracts and poemata. Volume II contains an essay on the poetry of Gray by John Mitford, followed by Gray's letters. Volume III contains more of Gray's letters. Volume IV contains more letters, an appendix andcriticisms on architecture and painting. Volume V finally contains reminiscences and correspondence of Gray, notes by the editor, extracts from a poem on the aphabet by Gray and observations on English metre by Gray. Thomas Gray (26 December 1716 30 July 1771) was an English poet, letter-writer, classical scholar and professor at Cambridge University. He is widely known for his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, published in 1751. Gray began seriously writing poems in 1742, mainly after his close friend Richard West died. He moved to Cambridge and began a self-imposed programme of literary study, becoming one of the most learned men of his time, though he claimed to be lazy by inclination. Gray was a brilliant bookworm, a quiet, abstracted, dreaming scholar, often afraid of the shadows of his own fame. He became a Fellow first of Peterhouse, and later of Pembroke College, Cambridge. Gray spent most of his life as a scholar in Cambridge, and only later in his life did he begin travelling again. Although he was one of the least productive poets (his collected works published during his lifetime amount to fewer than 1,000 lines), he is regarded as the foremost English-language poet of the mid-18th century. In 1757, he was offered the post of Poet Laureate, which he refused. Gray was so self-critical and fearful of failure that he published only thirteen poems during his lifetime. He once wrote that he feared his collected works would be mistaken for the works of a flea. Gray came to be known as one of the Graveyard poets of the late 18th century, along with Oliver Goldsmith, William Cowper, and Christopher Smart. Gray perhaps knew these men, sharing ideas about death, mortality, and the finality and sublimity of death. Condition: In green crushed Morocco leather bindings with gilt embellishment to the spine and triple gilt ruled edges to the boards. The edges of the leaves are gilt. Externally, sound with slight rubbing. Corners are worn on all volumes. There is some damage to the leather on the spines on all volumes. Front boards are detached on volumes I and II. Internally, generally firmly bound. Front hinge is tender on volume V. Pages are generally bright with some scattered light foxing. End-papers are marbled on all volumes. There are two bookplates to the front pastedown and recto of front free-end paper on all volumes, and to the rear pastedown on volumeV. Overall: GOOD ONLY..

The Complete Angler of Izaak Walton and Charles Cotton

London - J. Major, 1835. London - J. Major, 1835 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A fantastic seventeenth-century literary ode to fishing, reprinted by J. Major in the early 1800s. Rare in the publisher's original boards. Housed in a custom cloth case. Third Edition thus. With a frontispiece and numerous further plates, as well as illustrations in the text: 'extensively embellished with engravings on copper and wood, from original paintings and drawings by first-rate artists'. To which are added an introductory essay; the linnaean arrangement of the various river fish delineated in the work, and illustrative notes. The Compleat Angler was first published in 1653, but Walton continued to add to it for a quarter of a century. It is a celebration of the art and spirit of fishing in prose and verse; 6 verses were quoted from John Dennys's 1613 work Secrets of Angling. It was dedicated to John Offley, his most honoured friend. There was a second edition in 1655, a third in 1661 (identical with that of 1664), a fourth in 1668 and a fifth in 1676. In this last edition the thirteen chapters of the original have grown to twenty-one, and a second part was added by his friend and brother angler Charles Cotton, who took up Venator where Walton had left him and completed his instruction in fly fishing and the making of flies. Walton did not profess to be an expert with the fly; the fly fishing in his first edition was contributed by Thomas Barker, a retired cook and humorist, who produced a treatise of his own in 1659; but in the use of the live worm, the grasshopper and the frog Piscator himself could speak as a master. The famous passage about the frog, often misquoted as being about the wormuse him as though you loved him, that is, harm him as little as you may possibly, that he may live the longerappears in the original edition. The additions made as the work grew did not affect the technical part alone; happy quotations, new turns of phrase, songs, poems and anecdotes were introduced as if the leisurely author, who wrote it as a recreation, had kept it constantly in his mind and talked it over point by point with his numerous brethren. The best-known old edition of the Angler is J Major's (2nd ed. , 1824). Condition: Rebacked in cloth with original paper boards and spine and paper spine label. In a folding clothcase. Externally, the case is sound, two joints just starting. The book itself is very sound, some rubbing and loss to the original paper. Front hinge held firmly but by cords only. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, just the odd spot, the plates are bright but with heavier spotting. Dusting to the top textblockedge. Off-setting from the frontis to the title, and from the plates. Ownership label of Ainslie (Rolls) Heirloom, and copperplate ink signature dated 1842, to front pastedown. Overall: VERY GOOD with a VERY GOOD cloth case..

        The American Anti-Slavery Almanac, for 1836 - Volume 1, Number 1

Boston: Webster & Southard, 1835. The very first issue of the Anti-Slavery Almanac. Complete with 48 unnumbered pages including the covers. Cover illustration of "An Emancipated Family" plus two other illustrations: one shows a "Negro Hunt" and the other shows happy African children playing outside their hut just before being captured by slavers. Sound string binding. Clean pages with occasional, very light toning/spoting in the margins. Light wear. This is the first issue of the American Anti-Slavery Almanac. As noted in advertisement in The Liberator, the almanac's purpose was to provide "facts and information concering slavery which cannot fail to render it interesting to friends of Abolition, and a terror to slaveholders." The illustrations published in these almanacs were just as important. As noted by Angelina Grimke, "Until the pictures of the slave's sufferings were drawn and held up to the public gaze, no Northerner had any idea of the cruelty of the system, it never entered their minds that such abominations could exist in Christian, Republican America.". First Printing. Pamphlet. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Miss P. Horton as April [Souvenir print]

London: G. Madeley. London: G. Madeley, [ca. 1835]. How Quickly We Forget the Past [Horton, Priscilla; also known as Priscilla Reed]. Miss P. Horton as April [Souvenir print]. Lithograph by G.E. Madeley. London: G. Madeley, [ca. 1835]. Octagonal lithograph on paper, nicely hand colored. 7 1/2 x 9 1/2", window mounted on matboard. Slight soiling, 1 1/2" closed tear on bottom margin, repaired. This print pictures Horton in the musical opera at the Strand in 1834 called The Twelve Months probably after the text of Gilbert Abbott a Beckett (1811-1856). Figaro in London review of the Twelve Month performance on December 20, 1834: "The third novelty [of the evening] was the piece so long in preparation, called The Twelve Months, which (owing to the excellence of the acting, the extraordinary beauty of the original and selected music, the correctness and splendour of the costume, as well as the excellence of the scenery and the liberal style of all the minor appointments), was eminently successful. . . . Miss P. Horton as April, executed her share of the music admirably, having evidently studied it with great care, and sang a very sweet song, called The Curfew Bell with much taste and sweetness" (p. 204). A popular singer and agile dancer, Priscilla Horton (1818-1895) should be remembered for her Shakespearean acting and for her role--together with her husband--in establishing the German Reed Entertainments. These productions were important in overcoming Victorian attitudes against theatre-going with their reputable and delightful "family entertainment." These productions also produced some of the first operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. Born in Birmingham, Horton began acting at age 10. In London, she sang and danced from an early age at Vauxhall Garden. She attracted notice in 1834 when she played Kate in Sheridan Knowles' The Beggar of Bethnal Green. She acted a brilliant Ariel in W.C. Macready's Twelfth Night in 1839 and again in 1847 for a benefit to buy and preserve Shakespeare's house at Stratford. From 1840 to 1847, Horton joined Benjamin Nottingham Webster's company at the Haymarket Theatre, where she first played Ophelia in 1840. With her beautiful contralto voice she sang as Philadel in Henry Purcell's King Arthur in 1842 and also the role of Acis in Handel's Acis and Galatea. At the Haymarket Theatre from 1843-47, she appeared in many of the Planche Christmas and Easter pieces. During these years, she also created the girl/boy roles of Myrtina/Fortunio in Planche's Fortunio and His Seven Gifted Servants (1843). Paul Buczkowski writes, "Horton brought a lively intelligence to her roles, and was almost as highly lauded in tragedy (for instance, as Ophelia in Hamlet and the Fool in King Lear) as in comedy. She would appear in most of Planche's later works, substantially enriching them." A contemporary publication, The Athenaeum (March 21, 1840) carried the following review of a production of Hamlet: "The only striking novelty in the performance is the Ophelia of Miss P. Horton, which approaches very nearly to the wild pathos of the original in one scene, and is touching and beautiful in all" (p. 238). In 1855, after she had married the composer Thomas German Reed, Horton and her husband began to present "Mr. and Mrs. German Reed's Entertainments," which consisted of brief, small scale, family friendly comic operas. In the early and mid-Victorian era, the respectable middle classes regarded the theatre in general as sinful. Therefore, the Reeds shrewdly called their establishment the "Gallery of Illustration" and their productions "entertainments" to emphasize their refined propriety. From 1869 through 1875, William S. Gilbert wrote six works which were produced for Thomas German Reed's "Gallery of Illustration." References: Buczkowski, Paul, "J. R. Planche, Frederick Robson, and the Fairy Extravaganza," Marvels and Tales: Journal of Fairy Tale Studies 15, no. 1 (2001): 42B65; Figaro in London, vols. 3 4 (1834). A rare print. Not located at the Shakespeare Folger Library, Harvard Theatre College, or the British Museum. A portrait by Daniel Maclies featuring Priscilla Horton as Ariel in The Tempest (oil on panel; 67.5 x 54.5 cm.) can be found in the collection of the Royal Shakespeare Company (see
