        The American Anti-Slavery Almanac, for 1836 - Volume 1, Number 1

Boston: Webster & Southard, 1835. First Printing. Pamphlet. Very Good. First Printing. Pamphlet. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The very first issue of the Anti-Slavery Almanac. Complete with 48 unnumbered pages including the covers. Cover illustration of "An Emancipated Family" plus two other illustrations: one shows a "Negro Hunt" and the other shows happy African children playing outside their hut just before being captured by slavers. Sound string binding. Clean pages with occasional, very light toning/spoting in the margins. Light wear. This is the first issue of the American Anti-Slavery Almanac. As noted in advertisement in The Liberator, the almanac's purpose was to provide "facts and information concering slavery which cannot fail to render it interesting to friends of Abolition, and a terror to slaveholders." The illustrations published in these almanacs were just as important. As noted by Angelina Grimke, "Until the pictures of the slave's sufferings were drawn and held up to the public gaze, no Northerner had any idea of the cruelty of the system, it never entered their minds that such abominations could exist in Christian, Republican America.

South Sea Whale Fishery . A Representation of Boats attacking a Sperm Whale

London: Rudolph Ackermann, 1835. Handcoloured aquatint, 350 x 515 mm. (image size), complete with caption and all margins; sealed tear top left, generally in very good condition, framed. Whaling dramas. A rare and classic whaling print, showing a dramatic scene of a sperm whale crashing through a whaling boat, flinging the five whalers into the sea. The title "South Sea Whale Fishery" referred to all whale hunting south of the Arctic, an area the British established in 1776 when an American whaleman, Samuel Enderby, emigrated to England and was followed by recruits from Nantucket. 'Once the British and American China traders pioneered the Cape Horn route in the 1780s, the whalers followed closely in their wake… the whalers poked along and across the Ocean itself in search of the great leviathan - out to its farthest extensions and into its most distant corners, often to regions seldom visited by anyone else. The history of the whalers in the South Seas is thus, in a sense, the epic saga of the discovery, colonisation, contamination and subjugation of the Pacific itself' (Forster, The South Sea Whaler).

        Colonization, particularly in Southern Australia

London: T. & W. Boone, 1835. Octavo; a very good copy in the original green morocco-grain half cloth and drab papered boards, the joints neatly restored, printed paper label on the spine. First and only edition of Boone's first Australian publication. Between 1835 and 1853 Thomas and William Boone would publish an outstanding series of the classic accounts of Australian travel, including those of Mitchell, Grey, Eyre, Hodgkinson, Stokes, Jukes, Leichhardt, Sturt and Read. With the passing of the South Australian Act in 1834, the colonists petitioned for the appointment of Napier as governor. A hero of the French wars, he wrote this work to set out his views on the proposed colony. Finally, in May 1835, he was informed that the terms he proposed on behalf of the colonists were not acceptable to the Company, so he declined the appointment in 1836 to continue his military career. Although Napier prepared the book from the writings of others, it is, like Samuel Sidney's almost two decades later, of interest as an attempt to present eye-witness reports of the first explorers and earliest settlers to a very wide public. Thus, with works such as Napier's, Ogle's on Western Australia, and Sidney's on the "three colonies", we see the seeds of the clichéd and simplistic perception of Australia as an antipodean Arcadia which did so much to colour the way the world at large and - perhaps regrettably - Australians themselves saw their continent for at least another hundred years.

        Alphabet] Carved Oak Alphabet Stick.

(Germany) 1835 - A dark-stained oak stick, carved with a Roman-letter alphabet in relief on one side. Two opposite sides are decorated with floral and foliate designs, and the side opposite of the alphabet is carved with the name "Maria Magdalena Buder" and the date 1835. The body has a square, tapering shape, and it appears that this was a teacher's pointer, used as an educational tool. The carving has a naïve, folk-art quality, and the item was perhaps given as a gift from students to their instructor. Measures 6 3/4 inches in length (68.5 cm), in very fine condition.

Bildnis Friedrich Preller d.J.

        Colonization of South Australia

London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longman, 1835. Octavo, folding handcoloured frontispiece map; original blue paper boards with grey spine, printed label, spine chipped and hinges weak, but an excellent unsophisticated copy, preserved in a quarter brown morocco box by Aquarius. With an 1825 letter from Torrens about the New Zealand Company. A fine copy in striking original condition of this important and influential work on South Australian colonisation, one of the earliest books on South Australia and the first book of Australian interest by the important political economist Torrens. Robert Torrens (1780-1864) was a marine officer who served with some distinction during the Napoleonic Wars, and who had a career-long interest in emigration to Australia, and who at one point even angled for an appointment as Governor of New South Wales. He tried to purchase land in the proposed Swan River colony in 1828, but when that fell through turned his attention to promoting South Australia instead. Torrens' book appeared in mid-1835 and the province of South Australia was formally established the following February. A tireless exponent of settlement and colonisation, his scheme was beset by ruinous land speculation and dilatory management, meaning that the colony collapsed in 1841 and had to be rescued with a loan from the British Parliament, metamorphosing into a crown colony the following year. This copy has a set of advertisements dated April 1835, and the bookplate of Sir William Molesworth. He was a British MP and friend of John Stuart Mill, who presided over the select committee on transportation of 1837, known as the Molesworth Committee, and would have had more than a passing interest in Torrens' views on emigration (see also catalogue number XXX). Loosely inserted in this copy is a letter signed by Robert Torrens to Zachary Macaulay, the abolitionist and influential committee member of the Church Missionary Society, relating to a prospectus he had sent relating to the New Zealand Company. The letter is dated 12 March 1825, and shows that Torrens had hopes of interesting the Church Missionary Society in the project, 'and in affording every assistance and support to the individuals who have for so many years devoted themselves to the social and moral improvement of the natives.' Torrens was one of the most active supporters of the New Zealand Company, but not much is known about how the Company was run, making this an interesting survival.

Narrative of a Voyage Round the World... the wreck of the ship "Governor Ready" in Torres Strait

London: Sherwood, Gilbert, & Piper, 1835. Octavo, with a lithographed frontispiece and two plates, folding map (plates a little browned, marginal water-stain affects frontispiece); overall a very good copy in the publisher's green pebble cloth. A surgeon at the Swan River, Torres Strait and the Great Barrier Reef. First edition of a highly important coastal voyage, written by a keen observer with a particular interest in understanding the islander and coastal tribes with which he came into contact. Wilson's account takes its place as one of the fine narratives written by surgeons in Australia, and shows a good eye for both his contacts with coastal Aborigines (particularly at Raffles Bay) and for natural history. A very good early account the far northern and western coasts of Australia. In 1829 Wilson visited the unsuccessful first settlement established in 1827 on the Cobourg Peninsula. He spent some time there exploring Melville Island and the country around Raffles Bay. On his return voyage he tarried at the Swan River settlement and took part in several inland explorations, including an important expedition with Captain Collet Barker into the interior from King George's Sound. The first appendix includes notes on Wilson's earlier 1822 visit to Murray Island in the Torres Strait, and another includes vocabularies of Raffles Bay (Cobourg Peninsula) and the Swan River. 'Wilson's book is of high exploration interest, but its unpromising title has hidden its full significance from many collectors. Wilson's account has a place in any collection of exploration books, especially since so there are so few publications relating to the early discovery and exploration of Australia's western and northern extremes. It is a scarce and desirable book' (Australian Rare Books).
