GEORGIA SCENES, CHARACTERS, INCIDENTS, &c. IN THE FIRST HALF CENTURY OF THE REPUBLIC. By a Native Georgian.

Augusta, Ga. 1835. - 235pp. Original plain paper-covered boards, cloth backstrip, remnants of paper label. Moderate rubbing and soiling, extremities worn, joints tender. Bookplate on front pastedown, ownership ink signature, minor scattered foxing. Good plus. In a brown half calf and cloth slipcase, spine gilt. The rare first edition of a classic of southern literature and manners, GEORGIA SCENES. is written in the form of a series of sketches set in frontier Georgia at the beginning of the 19th century. Although in fictional form, the book is such realistic social history that it presents one of the best pictures of life in that time and place, and straddles the line between fact and fiction. Longstreet said that his purpose was "to supply a chasm in history which has always been overlooked - the manners, customs, amusements, wit, dialect, as they appear in all grades of society to an ear and eye witness of them.there is scarcely one word from the beginning to the end of the book that is not strictly GEORGIAN." The book stands at the beginning of a long line of southern humor. Goodspeed's bought the Streeter copy for $375 in 1967. HOWES L448, "b." STREETER SALE 1168. DE RENNE I, p.445. GEORGIANA 28.         The landscape gardener; comprising the history and principles of tasteful horticulture.

London: James Ridgway and Sons 1835 - 8vo., 5 coloured plates* (of which two are double-page), viii + 106pp., original green cloth with printed paper spine label (label worn and chipped), the covers lightly marked. A very good copy with no marks of previous ownership. Only edition. Dedicated by the author to Sir Richard Colt Hoare of Stourhead, the plates illustrate the gardens at Buckingham Palace and St. James's Park, while the text discusses the landscape developments at Blenheim Palace, Powderham Castle and various largely West Country gardens. The author, a Devonshire cleric living near Exeter, was clearly carried away by unbounded enthusiasm for his subject. 'To an individual privileged with leisure, exempt from anxiety, and not absorbed in the incessant pursuit of ambition, avarice, or pleasure', he writes, 'few objects appear more adapted to excitement of interest, than observation of the diversified productions of vegetative creation. Their leading feature, progressive expansion rarely intermitted; their infinitely varied and elegant form of outline; their multifarious and fluctuating shades of tint; their alternate acquisition and privation of decorative mantling; their annual florification and subsequent fructification; their relief to numerous wants of the human race, by supplying protection, nutrition, medicine, habitation, with various means of convenience, comfort, and gratification, constitute inherent properties, combining to render horticulture a study of equal importance and amusement'. * Three of the plates are lithographed and signed: On stone by R. Hamerton. A. Ducôté Litho 70 St. Martin's Lane.> [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        De la Democratie en Amerique

Paris: Gosselin, 1835, 1840 - Four volumes. Near contemporary quarter blue morocco. Folding map after Tocqueville by Bernard. Some browning and foxing. An excellent set. FIRST EDITIONS. Famed Harvard constitutional scholar Harvey Mansfield called Democracy in America “at once the best book ever written on democracy and the best book ever written on America.” The most influential commentary on America in the nineteenth century, Democracy in America was based on Tocqueville’s travels in the United States in 1831 and 1832. Tocqueville came to America to study the American prison system on behalf of the French government. After completing his official duties in the east, he toured the West and the South, visiting Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, the Carolinas, Virginia, and Washington, D. C. The book resulting from these investigations is generally considered the 19th century’s most insightful commentary on the development of our unique American culture and political system. Tocqueville declared, “Democratic nations care but little for what has been, but they are haunted by visions of what will be; in this direction their unbounded imagination grows and dilates beyond all measure Democracy, which shuts the past against the poet, opens the future before him.” Fewer than 500 copies of the first part were published. The second part (1840) was issued concurrently with the eighth edition of the first part, helping to explain why quality matched sets are so difficult to obtain today. The book was an immediate success, and more than fifty editions were published in French and English in the nineteenth century. For nearly two centuries it has provoked endless discussion and been an inspiration for countless commentaries on American democracy. Finely bound matched sets of the first edition are difficult to locate. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Medicinal, Edible & Toxic Fungi

Switzerland, Germany, circa 1835. Manuscript mycology field notes in the form of pencil drawings with scientific annotations, classification references, and occasionally with the month in which a living specimen was either collected or observed in its habitat, made by an unidentified mycologist / botanist, and illustrating various species of fungi - edible, medicinal, and toxic. Comprising some 240 drawings on individual trimmed leafs, each mounted thematically with others of its type, with brass pins to the inside of folio double leafs. Text is in German, with some plant names also in Latin. The lot housed in the author's original string-tied portfolio boards, heavy green cardstock with manuscript inscription to front. This is a most uncommon manuscript work, profusely illustrated with pencil drawings, encyclopaedic in its scope, devoted strictly to the study and classification of mushrooms, and dating to formative era medicinal mycology. Numerous specimens shown were, and still are, popular and beneficial in homeopathic treatments. The present work is contemporary to notable pioneer mycologists such as Elias Magnus Fries, Christian Hendrik Persoon, Anton de Bary, and Lewis David von Schweinitz, though its author is unknown. The notes suggest that the writer observed living fungi specimens, between the months of May and October 1830, in Switzerland, Germany, and possibly London, drawing them on the spot, and subsequently identifying and classifying them according to the works of eighteenth century botanists. Specific regions identified include Münsterlingen and Scherzingen in Switzerland, as well as St. Katharine, which may be the ancient "Royal Peculiar" jurisdiction by the Tower of London which became a civil parish until 1895. In the nineteenth century, St. Katharine's by the Tower grew to be a village, flanking the banks of the River Thames. Aiding to date the work, one of the drawings is dated 2 June 1835. The drawing of honey fungus is annotated "Agaricus melleus" as it was then classified in the Agaricus genus, and later changed to the Armillaria genus in 1871. In addition, a single leaf found at the front of the volume is watermarked with a cameo and the name of Leopold Grosherzog von Baden, who in 1830 became the Grand Duke of Baden, the papermaker's name partially seen, André B.C. von Ac... Finally, the large folded leafs to which the drawings are mounted, are forged Whatman paper, watermarked "J.B. Whatman" with the crossed mid-section to the 'W' and the letter 'B' being clear revelations of forgery. [In the early nineteenth century, Whatman watermarks were commonly forged in France, Germany and Austria, as unscrupulous papermakers sought to gain from the name and reputation of Whatman.] The manuscript notes make frequent reference to "Schaeff." referring to Jacob Christian Schaeffer (1718-1790) who was an authoritative eighteenth century mycologist in Germany. [Jacob Christian Schaeffer was a German botanist, mycologist, zoologist, theologist, and clergyman, born in Saxony, residing at Regensberg for several years, and who wrote several botanical works between 1758 and 1767. From 1762 to 1764, he wrote four richly illustrated volumes on mycology, "Natürlich ausgemahlten Abbildungen baierischer und pfälzischer Schwämme, welche um Regensburg wachsen". In botany, "Schaeff." refers to Jacob Christian Schaeffer (1718-1790) whereas "Herr.-Schaeff." refers to Dr Gottlieb August Wilhelm Herrich-Schäffer (1799-1874).] Some examples found in the present lot of manuscript drawings and field notes: Agaricus violaceus. Schaeff. [Cortinarius violaceus] commonly known as the violet webcap or violet cort, a fungus in the webcap genus Cortinarius native across the Northern Hemisphere. The fruit bodies are dark purple mushrooms. Though they are edible, the appearance of these mushrooms is more distinctive than their taste. The species was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753, and has undergone several name changes. Christiaan Hendrik Persoon placed it in the Section Cortinaria of Agaricus in his 1801 work "Synopsis Methodica Fungorum". Cortinarius was established as a 'genus' by English botanist Samuel Frederick Gray in the first volume of his 1821 work "A Natural Arrangement of British Plants", where the species was recorded as Cortinaria violacea, 'the violet curtain-stool.' Agaricus melleus. Schaeff. [Armillaria mellea] commonly known as honey fungus, which causes Armillaria root rot in many plant species and produces mushrooms around the base of trees it has infected. They are edible but some people may be intolerant to them. The species was originally named Agaricus melleus by Danish-Norwegian botanist Martin Vahl in 1790; it was transferred to the genus Armillaria in 1871 by Paul Kummer. Agaricus galerituculatus. Schaeff. [Mycena galericulata ] a mushroom species known as the common bonnet, the toque mycena, or the rosy-gill fairy helmet. It is quite variable in color, size, and shape, which makes it somewhat difficult to reliably identify in the field. The mushrooms have caps with distinct radial grooves, particularly at the margin. Mycena galericulata is saprobic, and grows on decaying hardwood and softwood sticks, chips, logs, and stumps. It can also grow from submerged wood, which may give it a terrestrial appearance. The type species of the genus Mycena was first described scientifically as Agaricus galericulatus by Italian mycologist Giovanni Antonio Scopoli in 1772. It was sanctioned under this name by Elias Magnus Fries in his 1821 Systema Mycologicum, however, that same year, Samuel Frederick Gray transferred the species to the genus Mycena. Agarica maculatus. Schaeff. also known as the spotted agaricus, and at the time of this work, considered to be rare according to Mrs. Hussey. A leading mycologist of her day, Mrs. Anna Maria Hussey (1805-1853), wife of scientist and rector Thomas John Hussey described it as having only two types. Her collections eventually led to the publication of her two-volume work published between 1847 and 1855 and titled, "Illustrations of British mycology: Containing figures and descriptions of the funguses of interest and novelty indigenous to Britain." Edward Hamilton's 1852 title "The Flora Homeopathica... Medicinal Plants..." lists it for natural remedies. The 1884 issue of American Homeopathic Dispensatory also lists it as a medicinal plant. Agaricus is primarily a remedy for use by medical homeopaths because of its sphere of influence on the nervous system. Throughout the volume we also find references to "Bull." - the botanical abbreviation for Jean Baptiste François Pierre Bulliard (1752-1793) a French physician and botanist. Bulliard's Dictionnaire Elémentaire de Botanique (1783) contributed to the expansion and consolidation of botanical terminology and the Linné system. It was especially important in the area of the mycology, containing descriptions of 393 out of 602 table mushrooms. Significant species described by Bulliard include the cep (Boletus edulis), the common inkcap (Coprinopsis atramentaria) and the poisonous livid pinkgill (Entoloma sinuatum). Two sections of the present work are devoted to the genus Boletus and together include thirty-four (34) diagrams with descriptions. Some of these were observed at Münsterlingen in the canton of Thurgau, Switzerland. At least one was observed nearby at Scherzingen. The writer also notes Bulliard in relation to his drawing of an Agaricus pseudoaurantiacus, a wild and edible mushroom first mentioned by Bulliard in his "Herbier de la France" published in 1783. At least one reference is made to Röhl., being the citation for a botanical name associated with Johann Christoph Röhling (1757-1813), a German botanist and clergyman of Gundernhausen, near Darmstadt, and the author of an important treatise on German flora titled "Deutschlands Flora" first published in 1796. He also published a work on mosses of Germany titled "Deutschlands Moose" (1800). He was the taxonomic authority of the plant genus Melandrium (family Caryophyllaceae). The plant genus Roehlingia (family Dilleniaceae) was named after him by August Wilhelm Dennstedt. Historically, mycology was a branch of botany, because, although fungi are evolutionarily more closely related to animals than to plants, this was not recognized until a few decades ago. Mushrooms have been widely used in homeopathic remedies for centuries, especially in traditional Chinese medicine. Although medical mycology is a fairly recent sub-discipline of medicine, having gained ground since the Second World War, medico-mycological investigations began as early as 1842, at Greifswald in Germany, when Wilhelm Baum (1799-1883) was appointed to the chair of surgery of the university. In 1846, Carl Ferdinand Eichstedt (1816-1892) discovered a fungus to be the cause of the contagious nature of the skin condition pityriasis versicolor. Before all of this, German physician Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), created the system of alternative medicine called homeopathy, publishing his scientific approach in a medical journal in 1796

[Odes and prayers. in honour of S. M. Louis-Philippe.]

      J. Smith Paris 1835 - 8vo. ff. [1 blank], pp. [3], [6], [2], [4], [1], [1 blank], [4], [4], [1 blank], with manuscript text next to the printed pages. Original gilt tooled full red morocco, upper board with Dédié a Sa Majesté L.P. Roi des Français surmounted by the royal crest in gilt, lower board with embossed floral device, original marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Magnificent example of this great rarity - a presentation copy for the dedicatee, Louis-Philippe (1773 – 1850), the last King of France (ruled 1830 – 848). One of only three known copies. The identically bound companion to the present copy, a presentation copy for the Queen of France, Louis-Philippe's wife Maria Amalia of Naples and Sicily (1782-1866), was sold at auction in 2003; another copy - the only other we could locate - is held in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. With the original Hebrew text handwritten next to the printed text. The printed dedication to Louis-Philippe is followed by six compositions by Belais. Each of them includes the original Hebrew text in manuscript in ink (presumably in Belais' own hand, or in the hand of Elazar Wahague, the author of the introductory praise poem, printed in Hebrew on the back of the title page). The Hebrew handwritten text appears either on the right hand page or in the right hand column, with the parallel French translation by Lazare Wogue (scholar of the Beth Midrash Hagadol in Metz) printed in letterpress either on the left hand page or in the left hand column. Each composition has a separate title in bold: [1] Ode orientale d'Abraham Belaïs, tunisien, en l'honneur du Roi des Français, de la Reine son épouse, des Princes leurs enfans et du peule [sic] français; [2] Hymne acrostiche a la gloire de notre seigneur le Roi des Français; [3] Au Roi. Cantique (with engraved tail-piece of a cornucopia); [4] Acrostiche; [5] Au Roi des Français, à la Reine et à leur Auguste Famille. Acrostiche; [6] Prière; two of the three acrostics spell the name ABRAHAM and the other BALAIS (not Belais). 'Abraham Belais (Belaish; 1773 – 1853) was treasurer to the bey of Tunis when he had to leave the country following business reverses and settled in Jerusalem. For a time he was rabbi in Algiers, then, moving to Europe, he managed to secure the patronage of persons high in public life. He was appointed by the king of Sardinia rabbi of Nice, against the wishes of the community [ ] In 1840, he went to London where [ ] he was ultimately given a minor communal office and sat occasionally on the bet din. He published a large number of books, apart from his sycophantic odes in honor of European crowned heads and other influential persons.' (Encyclopaedia Judaica. Detroit, 2007. vol. 3, p.277).         Journal of a Cruize in the U.S. Ship Delaware 74, in the Mediterranean, in the Years 1833 & 34, together with a sketch of a journey to Jerusalem

1835 - First edition. 12mo. Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards, spine stamped in gilt, housed in a drop-down buckram cloth box; boards rubbed, some loss to head of spine. [4], 106 (mis-paginated, really 107), [1]blank pp. [Port] Mahon [Minorca], The Widow Serra and Son, The Delaware was the first American naval ship to visit Beirut, and the tour did much to establish American prestige in Egypt and the Levant. The Commodore, Daniel T. Patterson, told the American Missionaries that he had come, in no small part, as a demonstration of their government's support for them. The ship had a crew of some 876 (incl. Patterson's wife and three daughters) and during its ?stay in Beirut . it was estimated that 40,000 persons visited her? (p.200, Finnie, Pioneers East, 1967). David H. Finnie notes that ?Service in the Mediterranean was much sought after by young officers with a flair for the exotic and antique? (ibid. p.262) and his point is much evidenced in the palpable excitement of this journal. Written in rather colloquial prose by two crew-members, it contains a breezy, energetic account of the voyage to Beirut, followed by a more detailed account of the overland journey from Jaffa to Jerusalem. They devote a number of pages to describing Alexandria and Jerusalem; comparing book-learnt visions with the reality of the cities as they were in 1834. Rare. We find copies only at the BL, the Biblioteca Nacional de Espana, and seven copies in North America. A Spanish language edition of the same year and publisher is even more scarce, with OCLC finding only three holdings. Palau, 122048; Rosenbach, no. 390; cf Sabin 35267.

Good example, short margins, some restored tears (a short one in the platemark)
