Ã‰lémens de Dessin Linéaire, Français et Anglais

Hardcover. Leporello. Very Good. Scarce, with no copies discovered on OCLC First Search, nor mentioned in Gumachian or other sources. Circa 1835. 15 by 12.5 when closed. 23 hand-colored lithographed panels. Each illustration is intended to illustrate some concept of geometry. The geometric topics include a horizontal line, a vertical line, an oblique line, a curved line, a broken line, a right angle, an acute angle, an obtuse angle, a scalene triangle, an isoceles triange, an equilateral triangle, a rectangular triangle, a square, a rectangle, a rhombus, a trapezoid, a circle, a prism, a cube, a pentagon, a cylinder, a cone and a quarangular pyramid. Each of these geometric formations is incorporated into a pretty colored illustration of a boy and girl engaged in various interior and exterior activities, with the actualization of the concept ranging from obvious to more subtle and requiring the viewer to search, but not too hard, for it. Clearly the overriding point of the lesson is to show how these geometric formations are ubiquitous in everyday life and not just things found in abstract primers. The format is also meant to give instruction an element of non-taxing fun. The imagery is delightful, if not particularly unusual for the period, but the application of an overriding mathematical theme seems to us very novel, perhaps a corrollary to ABCs and arithmetic-oriented leporellos but something else all the same. Soiling on the cover. Small corner chip. Occasional light foxing.

Lodi, Tipografia Orcesi, 1835 - 1836. 2 volumi in - 8°, riuniti in m. pelle coeva, dorso decorato in oro. (4), xi, (i), 67, (1) pp.; xiv, 60 pp., 1 f.b. "By his demonstration of the parasitic nature of the muscardine disease of silkworms, Bassi is regarded as the founder of the doctrine of pathogenic micro - organism. He is rather neglected by medical historians." (Garrison & Morton, 2532). Hirsch, I, p. 372. Bulloch, History of bacteriology, pp. 159 - 61 e 351.

Contemporary plain tan paper wrappers which show age-toning, staining and wear at the edges with a repair to the spine on the blank verso. The text block and plates are mildly damp stained and show moderate wear and soiling and are partially disbound. Laid in a newly made clamshell box of cloth with a printed paper spine label. A good copy of a rare pamphlet. " Relief etching on copper, or ecktypography, was the name which A. Dembour, an engraver in Metz (Lorraine), called the relief process invented by him in 1834. He made drawings on copper plates with greasy varnish and etched away the bottom, which was not covered by the varnish. This is perhaps one of the first publications on the so-called relief etching for letter press printing." Eder's HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY, 1945. The first edition, 1834, was only 17 pp., with one or more plates. OCLC locates only 2 copies, both in France. OCLC locates only 7 copies of this expanded edition of 1835.

The Gallery of Byron Beauties; Portraits of The Principal Female Characters in Lord Byron's Poems. From Original Paintings by Eminent Artists. [With thirty-nine fine hand-coloured plates].

London: David Bogue. Hardcover. Very Good +. London: David Bogue, Fleet Street, no date [but circa. 1835-1840]. [116]pp. (excluding plates but including all the various blank leaves). Illustrated with THIRTY-NINE HAND-COLOURED PLATES (complete as list). §David Bogue published from the shop of his employer Charles Tilt at 86 Fleet Street from 1835 or 1836, sometimes under his own name and sometimes under the Tilt and Bogue imprint. He became Tilt's business partner in 1840 (ODNB), the latter retiring in 1843. The work - comprising plates with facing text by the poet & explanatory notes - was reprinted on a few occasions until at least 1871 (latter under a North American imprint). Almost all surviving copies are uncoloured. Copac lists only one copy of any edition: Senate House (the Durning-Lawrence copy), described as 'London: Tilt and Bogue ... [1835]', but the state of the plates unmentioned. The copy offered, although undated and with no edition statement, appears to have been issued at this time, and seems to be one of the 'highly coloured' copies advertised for sale 'handsomely bound in morocco' at £3 in The Book of Facts (1839) - (uncoloured copies 31s. 6d.) - and at the same price (i.e. 60s.) in The Athenaeum, No. 903 (February, 1845). Occasional scattered foxing to rear of plates, and once or twice very slightly to images. Discreet paper repair to lower corner of title-page, and several similar to text or blanks. Small loss to corners or edge of a few plates neatly repaired, and one larger repair to creases/loss to lower corner of the plate Parisina (see photo.). Dimensions: 24 x 16.5 cm., approx. Original maroon morocco, elaborately decorated in gilt, gilt lettering, all edges gilt, EXPERTLY REBACKED in matching style with maroon endpapers. A very good, bright copy.         Boydell's Illustrations of Holy Writ: being a Series of Nearly One Hundred Copper-Plate Engravings from Original Drawings by Isaac Taylor, Junior.

1835 - Illustrations. Third edition. Tall 8vo., original brown cloth over green paper boards, printed paper label. London, Allan Bell and Co. From the Library of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, with his ownership inscription to the front free endpaper 'Rossetti', beneath which his younger brother William Michael has inscribed in ink 'These are the designs of wh. D.G. Rossetti, in his contribution to Gilchrist's Life of Blake, speaks in terms of high eulogy. WMR. 1905'. Gilchrist indeed compares Taylor, philosopher, artist, and scientist, to Blake, and Taylorvery likely was aware of him, his sisters the poets Jane and Ann Taylor having included Blake's 'Holy Thursday' in their 'City Scenes' of 1818. Rossetti was one of Blake's earliest champions, owning the Notebook now in the British Library. Re-backed using the original spine, the boards very rubbed, the corners bumped, spine faded, small loss to one corner of the label on the cover, plates foxed. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Boston: M. Hawes, 1835. - vi,[13]-192pp. plus engraved plate and folding map (plate in facsimile, map in partial facsimile). Modern half morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt with leather label. The bottom right quarter of the map is in facsimile, affecting the inset map of Galveston Bay, but none of the map of the mainland. Minor foxing. Very good. Woodman wrote this guidebook, one of the first in English devoted to Texas, to serve the purposes of the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company and their promotion of lands in Texas. Part of the text of Woodman's book is a pure promotion for the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company. It also contains a discussion of the various land grants in Texas, speeches and official reports on Texas, accounts of travellers' visits there, and testimonial letters from settlers. The engraved plate is captioned "The Buffalo Hunt" and is after a painting by A. Fisher. A rare and important Texas guide, with a most important map of Texas, seldom met with. STREETER TEXAS 1177. (4), VIII, 327, (1) pages, 2 tableaux et 2 cartes, demi-cuir noir moderne à la bradel, tête dorée, "With Quetelet's work of 1835 a new era in statistics began. It presented a new technique of statistics or, rather, the first techique at all" (DSB) Première édition. "Quetelet's impact on nineteenth-century thinking can in a certain sense be compared with Descartes's in the seventeenth century".(DSB) "Althought the works of Bernoulli and Laplace foreshadowed the application of probability to the measurement of uncertainty in the social sciences, the works of Quetelet represent the first steps toward making this wish a practical reality" (Stigler) Des rousseurs pâles éparses

Lezioni di Medicina legale del Professore Orfila. Traduzione del Dot. G. S. Prato

Tipografia Vignozzi, 1835 - 1836. Graziola Officinale - Gratiola Officinalis; Tavola 2 - 3. Narciso de' prati - Narcissus pseudo Narcissus e Ranuncolo de' prati - Ranunculus Acris; Tavola 4. Giusquiamo Nero - Hyosciamus Niger; Tavola 5. Belladonna - Atropa Belladonnas; Tavola 6.         [FIRST BOOK IN RUSSIAN ABOUT BYRON] Zapiski o lorde Bairone [i.e. Journal of the Conversations of Lord Byron]: [In 2 vols]

St. Petersburg: tip. N. Grecha, 1835. Vol.1. [4], VIII, 197 pp., [1] front.; Vol.2. [4], 153 pp. 8vo. Lord Byron's portrait on the frontispiece. Two volumes in contemporary quarter-leather bindings, with gilt-lettering on spines. Labels on spines, some rubbings to covers, pre-revolutionary library stamps (Tallinn), foxing. Rare, especially with the portrait. This is the first edition of the work by Thomas Medwin which was noted during a residence with Byron at Pisa in 1821-1822. This is also a first book in Russian about Lord Byron. Thomas Medwin (1788-1869), poet, Percy Shelley's cousin and close friend of Lord Byron. Published in late October 1824, Medwin's Journal of the Conversations of Lord Byron was the first of the book-length memoirs to appear following Byron's death in April. The influence of Byron in Russia is difficult to underestimate. Almost all of the notable poets of the first half of XIX century were influenced by him; his books were translated during his lifetime and afterwards. Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837) was influenced by Byron. He was interested in reading this book as soon as it came out. He asked his brother to send him a copy to Mikhailovskoe in 1825 but the censor committee didn't allow the distribution of both the English and French versions of the text. The first Russian translation came out 10 years later and the same year Pushkin wrote an article On Byron and significant things presumably influenced by this book that was in his library (Modzalevsky.696). WorldCat locates no copies in USA.

A New and Comprehensive Gazetteer of Virginia, and the District of Columbia . . .

Joseph Marten; Moseley & Thompson, Printers, Charlottesville 1835 - 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Complete with all 636 pages and the exceptionally scarce folding map. Original leather boards, sympathetically rebacked. Generally clean pages with some moderate foxing in places. Owners' names on front free endpaper and title page including that of Henry L. Hopkins (Speaker of the House of Delegates from 1848-1850) who complains bitterly that the section he wrote for the book about Powhatan County "was mangled by the publisher both in style and matter." Martin's Gazetteer is one of the best sources of information on pre-Civil War Virginia and the District of Columbia. As the subtitle notes, it "contains geographical, statistical, political, commercial, religious, moral and miscellaneous information collected and compiled from the most respectable and chiefly from original sources, along with a history of Virginia from its first settlement to the year 1754 as written expressly for the work by a Virginian." Using information consolidated from local contributors, Martin was able to provide exceptionally detailed essays about nearly all communities in Virginia and the District of Columbia including their boundaries, geology, scenery, topography and noteworthy natural attractions, weather, people, government, religion, education, militia, hospitals, prisons, industry, agriculture, finance, and much more. As of 2016, ABPC and Rare Book Hub show only two copies of the book have come up for auction in the last 75 years, and no copies with map are currently in the trade. Although, OCLC shows 21 institutions with copies, it is not known how many of those have the map. OCLC shows only two institutions with copies of the disbound map, and there are no auction records for it at ABPC or Rare Book Hub, nor are there any in the trade. This is a truly scarce and historically valuable piece of Virginiana. See Bradford 3218a, Eames 44894, Howes M340, and Sabin 44894. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
