BIRNEY, James G.
Boston: Garrison and Knapp, 1834. Very Good. First edition. 12mo. 46pp. Stitched printed self-wrappers. Inscribed in a contemporary hand on the front wrap: "Mr. M. F. Hait with the respects of J. H. Kimball." The top inch of the unprinted rear wrap torn away, small ink blot and small chip on the front wrap, bottom corners of the pages a little creased, still a nice and presentable at least very good copy. Birney was a successful lawyer, politician, and slaveholder in Kentucky and Alabama. He gradually came to believe that the problem of slavery could be solved by exporting slaves to a colony in Liberia. He worked for the American Abolition Society traveling throughout the South promoting the idea with only modest success. In this important pamphlet, published in the same year that he freed his remaining slaves, Birney expresses his renunciation of his long held belief in either the expulsion and forced colonization of the slaves or gradual emancipation, in favor of immediate abolition of slavery. Birney died in 1857 at the Raritan Bay Union utopian community in the company of fellow abolitionists and residents Theodore Weld, Angelina Grimke Weld, and Sarah Grimke. The presenter of this copy, J. H. Kimball, was also employed by the American Abolition Society, was an editor of the New Hampshire Herald of Freedom, and co-author with J. A. Thome, of Six Months Tour in the West Indies 1837.This text represents an important way-station in the evolution of the Abolitionist Movement. Uncommon in the trade, with a reasonably nice association.

MEDWIN, Thomas.
Richard Bentley. 1834. 8vo. Sometime rebound in half brown morocco, gilt rules to sides, spines with gilt raised bands, gilt panels and lettering, marbled endpapers, marbled edges; pp.xvi + 336, vii + 348, engraved frontispieces, occasional text engravings; front hinge of vol I tender, vol II recently rejointed, spines a little sunned, frontispieces foxed, otherwise very clean internally, very good. Provenance front pastedowns of Henry Edmund Taylor of Whickham near Newcastle upon Tyne, a prodigious nineteenth century collector. First edition. Scarce. Thomas Medwin (1788-1869) was an English poet best known for his biographies of his cousin Shelley and his close friend Byron. Both poets make brief appearances in this book, which is a defence of the art of angling and an ode to the countryside, mainly in the form of a dialogue between two characters who represent two sides of the author's own personality. Walton is his model, but the Romantic philosophical tone is very much his own.

[WENTWORTH, Trelawney].
London, Whittacker & Co., 1834. 8vo, 2 volumes. Contemporary red half-morocco over marbled boards; pp. x, [2], 324; vi, [2], 391, 2 engraved maps (one as frontispiece), rose-tinted aquatint frontispiece, nine engraved plates (one tinted, one printed in red and hand-coloured, one printed in blue, one hand-coloured), wood-engraved vignettes and musical notations in the text, binding with wear and restorations; occasional foxing to plates, text evenly toned. Very rare first edition, the issue with plates of an anonymously published travelogue of the West Indies in the 1820s, written by an abolitionist, who, before setting off from London read his way through the literature about slavery and the West Indies 'at an anti-slavery emporium in Piccadilly ... [and] ransacking the dusty shelves of numerous book-stalls' (vol.I, p. 8). The otherwise and strangely unknown author then visits a good part of the West Indies, observes nature, living and economic conditions of the inhabitants, of African and other origin. He notes customs, language, and even music of the 'Caribs', and was probably responsible for the delightful illustrations as well. 'The picture we have attempted to give in the foregoing pages of the character and condition of the negroes, as they appeared under our own observation during the residence of several years in the West Indies, must clearly demonstrate that they were not the degraded, ill-used beings they were generally represented, and that the planters were not so destitute of feelings of humanity as they have been supposed,' Trelawney Wentworth concludes on p. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Elmes, James. Artist: Thomas H. Shepherd
London: Jones & Co., 1834 and 1829 respectively. Full Decorated Calf. Very Good Minus. A striking binding, reminiscent of Baroque bindings, especially Spanish bindings, wiht ornate gilt decoration, tooling, etc. As to the two works, this is a bit of a bastard work, with only a small sampling of the plates, and these arranged in a hodgepodge order. No plates that were bound are missing, we believe, but rather, what was bound was essentially just a selection of the plates, with the text pieces also bound in eccentrically (at the end, for example, in the Edinburgh work, and its dedication out of order). 4to. 28 by 21 cm. vi, 7-12, 12, iii-vi, i-ii, 18 pp. 25 plates, with 48 views, or two views per plate. Moderate age toning, and scattered foxing and soiling. Top edge sliced off of first half-title (the title with the engraving). In essence, a lovely binding with a collection of city view plates.

probably England, 1834. Image 4 x 5-1/2 inches, plus margins. Fine. Image 4 x 5-1/2 inches, plus margins. Superb Watercolor and Pencil Drawing of Fox, 1834. A superbly composed and meticulously executed little drawing of extremely high quality. We have seen an album of very similar drawings of outstanding quality ascribed to Henry Alken (incorrectly, in our view) and this, signed, drawing may indicate their true creator.
