Published privately for the author in Manchester in 1834, this is the First Edition of this scarce collection of Poetry from Samuel Bamford (28 February 1788 - 13 April 1872) the English radical and writer, born in Middleton, Lancashire., the book is bound in what appears to be the original boards, book is ex Wigan free Public Library with their blind stamps to title page and last page of contents, and an ink stamp to reverse of title page, both boards have separated from the binding, with many of the pages loose, but complete, paper has become brittle with some shallow chipping to edge of title page and some page edges and loss to blank front endpaper, marking to endpapers, paper mildly browned, a few pencilled ticks within, these could be easily erased if desired, book would benefit from rebinding else in good acceptable condition Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

First edition. 4to. xxii, 264, (2) pp. Original patterned paper backed drab boards, printed title label to the upper cover stating this was a subscription copy priced at two guineas, inscribed on the half title "To Dr. Annesley / with the kindest regards / of the Author / Aug. 29. 1834". Frontispiece and 12 plates - 3 in colour, of which two are heightened in gold and one partially coloured, 10 of the plates designed by George Cruikshank, another plate of beetles by the entomologist and antiquarian J.O. Westwood. Neatly rebacked preserving much of the original spine, a very good copy.Almost certainly inscribed to Sir James Annesley who later sat on the committee of the British Archaeolgical Association, of which "Mummy" Pettigrew was one of the founding members.

The Scottish historical novelist Porter (1776-1850) writes to a representative of the Zoological Society of London, in Regent's Park, about a shipment of exotic animals sent by her brother, the noted painter, travel writer and at the date of this letter British consul in Venezuela, Sir Robert Ker Porter. "I have just received a letter from my brother Sir R. Ker Porter, brought by the Brigantine Pedraza ... He informs me that Vepel brought from him to the Zoological Society of Regent's Park a Capuchin Monkey, a [?] Weazel, and other animals. - amongst which, he added was a Land Tortoise- intended by him as a present to the Bishop of Peterborough: to replace in his garden there the old tortoise now dead, which (it is said,) had existed in that garden for several centuries...." Porter than passes along instructions on packing the tortoise comfortably, and asks the recipient if it would be alright if the Bishop contact him directly to say "how he wishes the animal to be forwarded." She also notes, "I expect to be in town myself the latter end of this month ... when I shall hasten to the zool: gardens to see the Capuchin Monkey, and the other poor things after their long voyage. - The Capuchin was a great pet of my Brother's..."

Lewis inherited extensive property in Jamaica and wrote this journal during his visits there in 1815 and 1817. Original tan calf with marbled boards, which are rubbed/show patina of age as per photo. Original spine with lovely bright gold gilt tooling, lettering and decorative work & raised bands, has had a little professional restoration. Fold-out map illustrating the voyages has toning & foxing & minor splits but is still good, & soundly bound into binding. Binding itself also completely strong, as are all hinges which are absolutely sound. Engraved frontis of Gutzlaff's residence is a little foxed. Inscription from original owner is written in French in copper-plate hand-writing on front endpaper. Text of book is in English. Wear to boards at corners & ink stain to front leaf edge. Some partial scattered marks/foxing. Note on back endpaper dated 1945. Binders: R. Clay, Bread-Street-Hill. Gutzlaff was Prussian by birth & voyaged extensively through the east. His journal considered the major document recording Chinese life prior to the treaties of the 1840's. 347 pp. HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE.

Spines a shade lightened, else an exceptionally crisp, clean, well-preserved set, in early American cloth. First published in London the same year, The Last Days of Pompeii, Bulwer's single most successful book, "rapidly achieved classic status and remained a best-seller for the rest of the century; it was translated into at least ten languages (no fewer than sixteen French impressions had been issued by 1864), was frequently dramatized, and twice adapted as an opera. Contemporary green calf, richly gilt spines with central floral motifs, dark red twin labels, concentric gilt and blind stamped ornamental panels on sides, gilt Greek-key roll tool on turn-ins, marbled edges and endpapers. Late 19th-century engraved rococo-style armorial bookplates of Henry James Wilkinson, with his inscription in volume I ("H. J. Wilkinson from his friend Chas. Lipscomb") and pencilled ownership inscriptions of Charles Henry Lipscomb; both men were clerics, Lipscomb in Norfolk and Wilkinson in Staffordshire, and had been at Oxford together; 20th-century bookplate of Peter and Margery Morris (Faskally, Perthshire). Extremities a little rubbed, touch of foxing in places. A very good set, with half-titles. First edition, well represented institutionally but commercially uncommon; a most attractively presented copy in a superior contemporary binding. John Howison (1797-1859) was a Scot who, from 1818 to 1820 travelled in Quebec and Ontario, and whose Sketches of Canada (1821), published when he was still in his mid-twenties, "was an immediate success and is one of the best documentary sources for pioneer life in Canada" (ODNB). In 1822 he went to Bombay as an assistant surgeon with the East India Company and "was stationed in Poona in 1825, and belonged to the literary society there.
