Autograph letter signed "Bellini" to Francesco Florimo (1800-1888)

      - 1 page of a bifolium. Dated Paris, December 19, 1834. In ink on lightweight paper. With integral autograph address panel. In Italian (with translation). Bellini informs Florimo that French composer [Antoine] Elwart (1808-1877), Bellini's protégé, will be coming to Naples from the Paris Conservatoire and asks that Florimo introduce him to the composer Niccolò Zingarelli (1752-1827) and other important musicians in the city, and "be useful to him if you can."Browned; creased at folds; small pinholes to corners and near central fold not affecting text; remains of former hinging to blank upper margin. With early printed French dealer or auction catalogue description to blank lower right corner of verso. A leading figure in early 19th-century opera, Bellini was especially noted for his expressive melodies and sensitive approach to text-setting. Francesco Florimo was his fellow-student at the Conservatory and closest friend. ". [His] attachment to Florimo never wavered, and his long and frequent letters to his friend are by far our fullest source of information about his professional and personal life. Florimo remained in Naples as librarian at the conservatory until his death in 1888, but his true calling was as chronicler and guardian of Bellini's fame. In 1882 he published a biography and edition of Bellini's letters; although Florimo's desire to protect and enhance his friend's reputation sometimes led him to censor or even substantially falsify the content of the letters, his portrait of the composer remains valuable and influential." Mary Ann Smart et al in Grove onlineElward won the Prix de Rome shortly after this letter was written with his "Omaggio alla memoria di Vincenzo Bellini," performed at the Teatro Valle in 1835.

        Eigenh. Brief m. Unterschrift.

Mannheim, 1834. 2 S., 4°. [An den österr. Chemiker u. - Versand D: 12,00 EUR Eisenlohr, Schrötter, Physik, Optik, Brief, Letter, Lettre, Briefe, Autograph, Autographe, Autographen, Autograf, Autografe, Autografen, Signatur, Signiert, Signed, Signature, Unterschrift, Eigenhändig, Handschrift, Handschriften, Manuscript, Manuscrit, ALS, A.L.S., LAS, L.A.S.

New York: Betts and Anstice, and Peter Hill, 1834 - First Edition. Wright (I) 1066. Issued anonymously. PublisherÕs cloth with a leather spine label; very good; in a custom clamshell box. An early object lesson on the risks of financial speculation and trading. With the opening of the Erie Canal and nascent railroads, New York had only recently succeeded Philadelphia as an American financial center. The publication of this book preceded the shattering event that was the Panic of 1837, and is among the earliest print references to Wall Street as a generic term for high finance.       London. Richard Bentley. 1834. 8vo, 22.3cm, the First Edition, in 2 volumes, vii,433 & vii,418pp., with 2 lithograph frontis plates, in later half tan brown calf, gilt ruled raised bands, full gilt decorations and borders in the panels, double crimson and dark green crushed morocco labels, marbled boards and endpapers, t.e.g., signed binding by "Riviere & Son", a fine set attractively bound. (cgc) T.P.L. 181, Lande 17, Sabin 1943, Dow I -p86. Howes. A-304, Waterston p56. Dionne II 1093, Swedish Arfwedson visited the United States (including New York, Massachusetts, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Georgia. Ohm. Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Washington) before travelling into Canada (through Niagara Falls, Toronto, Quebec and Montreal). Among the more well-known features of his narrative is a description of the Shaker community at Lebanon Springs. Like his contemporary, Alexis de Tocqueville, Arfwedson describes the American penal system, as well as provides a broader discussion of social and economic questions, including slavery.A contemporary review praised the work: "We are pleased with this work, it shall be our guide if ever we visit the United State. It steers clear of the aristocracy of Captain Hall, the flippancies and sneers of Mrs. Trollope, and the narrow-mindedness of a host of other travellers; whilst it freely yet liberally speaks of all that accomplished author observed. One is pleased to find a man entering upon the important business, which he has executed so well, that of fairly and manfully characterizing a great nation, in all its bearing and institutions, with a generous, we would say, a capacious spirit; at the very outset deeply impressed with the value and magnitude of the subject, and determined to persevere, throughout the course of a careful scrutiny, to accord room for the exercise of certain peculiarities which its posture and history have induced" (Monthly Review, 1835. Volume 1, No. 1., pp13-27). Swedish Arfwedson took a wearisome trip from Newark to Prescott, dropped in to Montreal, and pronounced Canadians in a feverish state, with restless demagogues and English governors daily losing their popularity. "Principles of freedom from the neighbouring state penetrate perceptibly among the rising generations, and the fore of example will sooner or later induce the Canadians to hoist the standard of Rebellion".. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover.

Charles Babbage's Calculating Engine. Edinburgh Review

Edinburgh Review, 1834, 1st edition, 1834. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. The Babbage article is 65 pages, with textual tables, 5 textual figures, etc. Octavo. The complete volume 59 (545pp, index). Bound in a late 20th century purple buckram binding, gilt lettered. Very sound and firm throughout, no cracked joints or loose pages. Ex university library, with their stamp to the rear of the title page, and tickets on the front endpapers, and class number label to the foot of the spine, otherwise quite unmarked throughout. Overall a very clean and sound volume. Lardner's article represents a chief source of information regarding Babbage's invention. A review of seven publications, from Babbage, and the Royal Society it presents in an accessible form an understanding of Babbage's mechanical notations and the basic workings of the machine. The Edinburgh Review article proved influential to other interested scientists including Pehr Georg Scheutz who in due course was able to build a calculating machine based upon Babbage's principles, but at a fraction of the cost. Lardner himself appears to have been most interested in mathematical table errors, to the extent of suggesting that Babbage's machine was the only possible means of eradicating them. The Edinburgh Review article was in effect a published version of a lecture series conducted by Lardner in the north of England in early 1834, where Lardner had developed an accessible means of explaining the Calculating Machine to a wider audience. He wrote the article with some help and support from Babbage. A key article regarding arguably the founding father of computing science. Quantity Available: 1. Bound in a simple half leather binding with marbled paper over boards. Spine with a little soiling, otherwise a fine and well preserved copy. Each "Interimsblad takes up 4 pp.. Kierkegaard's contributions: I: ab. 1 p.; II: 2 3/4 pp.; III: 4 pp.; IV: 4 pp.. Scarce first printing of Kierkegaard's very first publication - his polemical debut "Also a Defence of the High Abilities of the Woman" - also bound with his second, third and fourth publications, which all deal with contemporary press issues, primarily freedom of the press. Danish politics in the 1830'es was dominated by the slow implementation of rules for election for and assembly of the Estates of the Realm. But as they were only advisory, the papers and periodicals were not allowed to publish their opinions. In response to this, a liberal opposition arose around the two papers polemic papers "Kjøbenhavnsposten" and "Fædrelandet". The first point on the agenda for the Liberals was the fight for freedom of the press and the abolishment of censorship. This fight for freedom of the press was something that found resonance with Copenhagen academics, and it stirred up a lively activity in Copenhagen. In 1835, active Liberals had encouraged King Frederik VI to support freedom of press, but had received an answer stating that he alone was able to evaluate what was truly the best for the people and the state. After this answer from the king, the "Society for the Correct Use of the Freedom of press" was founded by moderate liberals and young liberals, and at the end of the year almost 2.300 members had joined. It was in the midst of all this that the 21-year old Søren Kierkegaard, then a student of theology, had his debut, with political-literary articles in "Kjøbenhavns flyvende post", in Interimsbladende, which were published separately. But as opposed to the predominantly liberal views of almost all other contributors, Kierkegaard's articles expressed distinctly conservative views. His very first publication [the present nr. I], "Også et Forsvar for Qvindens høie Anlæg" [Also a Defense of the High Abilities of the Woman] constitutes an unpolished ironic apology for the liberation of women. This article is published in December 1834 and is signed "A.". His three following publications [present nrs. II, III & IV] all concern the question of freedom of press and constitute satirical polemics against the two liberal papers "Kjøbenhavnsposten" and "Fædrelandet", against Orla Lehmann, the upcoming star of the liberal youth, and against all liberals in general. These three articles were published in February and April 1836. The two first are signed "B.", and the third, signed "S. Kierkegaard", constitutes the very first publication in his own name. As is well known, the names under which Kierkegaard later publishes comes to play a significant role in his authorship and was extremely thought out. The foundation of this play with the reader is thus laid in the present publications, in which he begins to develop the style for which he later gained worldwide renown.Common for all four of his first publications is the attempt at polemic and satirical power, at literary elegance and at a masterful and ceremonious critique of the prose of the opponent. - All something that comes to be dominant means in all of his later writings."Kjøbenhavns flyvende Post" [The Flying Post of Copenhagen] was one of the most important and most widely read cultural and literary periodicals of the period. It was edited and run by Johan Ludvig Heiberg (1791-1860), arguably the most famous cultural persona during the Danish Golden Age. He played a more significant role than any other author or thinker during this period and was the leading character of literature and philosophy in the 19th century. He introduced many German thinkers to Denmark, most importantly Hegel - who Kierkegaard would later oppose -, and he was part of almost all intellectual discussions of the Danish Golden Age. He was also a patron for many leading figures of the era. Interestingly, several people thought that the first of the article on the freedom of the press was written by Heiberg. This was of dubious merit to Kierkegaard himself, as he was opposed to the circles around Heiberg and the Hegelian environment, but it was still this article - and this miscomprehension - that gave him a claim to fame. Another paper claimed that this "priceless" article had been written by Heiberg himself, who "had written many witty things, but never anything as witty as this." Also Kierkegaard's professor of philosophy, Poul Martin Møller, to whom Kierkegaard was very devoted and to whom he dedicated his first book (the only person outside of his family that Kierkegaard ever wrote a printed dedication for), loved the article and assumed that Heiberg had written it. "He (Kierkegaard) had a lifelong antipathy toward the press, though he himself published reviews in various papers. His mistrust of the press as a legitimate organ of communication was based on several observations, one of which was that the press was the voice of the masses, rather than that of the individual. He viewed that voice with great skepticism and sarcasm in later years, averring that the crowd... even if technically correct... is wrong by the very fact of being the crowd. The truth can only be stated and practiced as individuals, especially as individuals before God. Admittedly, Kierkegaard's view of the masses was not well developed at this juncture."(D. Pages foxed but generally a clean and sound copy of Edgeworth's final novel and one of her favourite works. This work was seen as a break through novel and one that heralded in the transition from earlier 18th century novels to the mainstream movement of 19th century fiction. From Wikipedia, the quotation is from one of Edgeworth's biographers. "It was in 1830–when already past sixty years of age–that Miss Edgeworth set to work upon the last, and what, at the time it was written, was possibly the most successful of all her novels–namely, Helen. Any reader who will take it down from its shelf, and glance over it, will quickly perceive that it is a novel of a very much more modern type than any other by the same hand. In reading it we are aware that the eighteenth century has at last dropped out of sight, and that we are well out upon the nineteenth, not indeed as yet 'Victorian', but in a sort of midway region, on the road to that superior epoch."         Watercolour study of Birds

1834. Watercolour. Painted on Whatman paper dated 1831. Paintings of both sides of the sheet. In excellent condition. A stunning watercolour study of a demoiselle crane, curmoor, a crow, various thrushes Unfortunately we have not been able to discover any information concerning the artist of this charming watercolour. It is numbered and titled within the image but it bears no signature or date. It is obviously from the hand of an accomplished amateur painter who had a natural talent design and keen eye for detail. Amateur animal and flower painting became extremely popular during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century as a favored pursuit for aristocratic women. Painting was viewed as a necessary talent for young women, and was eagerly pursued and practiced by the upper classes. This skillful painting appears to be a watercolour study of an illustrated natural history text. Published scientific texts such as this were printed throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth century and commonly included illustrations of both flora and fauna specimens. The numbering and titles further confirm that this is a study from a printed source, since this method of identifying specimens was typically used in published volumes. Lovingly rendered and carefully painted, this skillful watercolour is a true work of art.

Boston: Hilliard, Gray, and Co.,, 1834. Octavo (250 x 150 mm). Original pebble grain cloth-backed drab boards, neatly rebacked, new printed spine label, fore and lower edges uncut, preserved in a custom made green morocco backed cloth box. Printed exlibris of Amos Lawrence of Boston and the library of Maryville College, Tennessee, to front pastedown. Corners worn, one or two splash marks to boards, inner hinges strengthened. Occasional light spotting and one short marginal tear; a very good copy of a scarce book. First edition, scarce and often overlooked, of "one of the highlights of classical economic theory" (K.H. Hennings in The New Palgrave). A native of Scotland, Rae (1796-1872) emigrated to Canada, and thence to America, where this, his only publication, was written. Originally intended as an appendix to a larger work on the Natural History and Statistics of Canada, Rae "succeeded in creating a theory of capital to which Böhm-Bawerk and others were indebted; in his lifetime some small recognition from J. S. Mill was almost the only notice he obtained" (Who's Who in Economics), although Fisher, Wicksell and Ã…kerman were all subsequently familiar with his work, Fisher dedicating one of his main works to Rae. His work "also influenced Schumpeter's (1911) concept of economic development, and Veblen's (1899) notion of conspicuous consumption." (Hennings, ibid.).

Bibliotheca Heberiana. Catalogue of the Library of the Late Richard Heber, Esq., Parts I-XII

Sotheby and Son; Evans; Wheatley 1834-1836, London - Twelve auction catalogues of the truly massive library formed by one of the greatest bibliophiles of nineteenth-century England. (A thirteenth part of the English sales (Wheatley, 1837) is not present here.) "As Heber was an accomplished scholar as well as a collector, his books were chosen with ability and judgment. His library was particularly rich in the works of the early English poets, and his collection of Greek and Latin Classics, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and French books was very extnsive and choice, but he had a great objection to large paper copies, because they occupied so much room on his shelves." (Fletcher, English Book Collectors, pp. 340-1.) Heber maintained his collections in various houses: at Pimlico and at York Street in London, and in Oxford, Paris, Ghent, Brussels and Antwerp. Several of the volumes in this group have interesting and varied provenance. The twelve parts are: Part I (Sotheby and Son, 1834): [iv], 388 pp., original paper-covered boards, printed title label and presentation signature from London bookseller HENRY BOHN on the cover; front hinge starting, but firm.         [Aesop] The Fables of Aesop, and Others: For the Improvement of Youth with Instructive Applications

London: J. M'Gowan, [1834]. First edition thus. Offered here are two separate volumes (each of which contains both volume 1 and volume 2 as called for) of this scarce 1834 edition of Aesop's Fables: London, Printed for J. M'Gowan and Sons. The first, (#2499a) is bound in contemporary brown marbled paper covered boards, black calf spine and tips. This volume has all 100 plates as called for, half of which are bound together at the end of volume 1 and the other half bound together at the end of volume two. A very good, clean and tight set. This copy lacks both title pages which are replaced with facsimiles. The second volume, which has the original title pages to both volumes, has only 91 of 100 plates and is in a more modern binding. This volume contains multiple leaves of facsimiles in the text, as well facsimiles for the 9 missing plates. Together, a complete volume easily achieved and thus here representing a wonderful opportunity to form a complete set of an exceedingly scarce and important Aesop edition.
