Werken, Nachlese.Kienreich Johann Nep. Andreas, Verleger und Buchdrucker. * Graz, 2. 5. 1759; † Graz, 6. 4. 1845. Manuscript in neat handwriting] Invertebrata 2d Division

      - Unpublished, no date but ca. 1834. Square 4to (19.5 x 16.2 cm). [xvi], 88 pp., with handwritten text. Mid 19th century half calf over embossed linen boards. Spine with gilt lines; boards with an elaborate pattern of flowers and a peacock. Marbled edges.= A peculiar manuscript, amassing the various descriptions of the Mollusca, in an altered, condensed form, from Griffith and Pidgeon's translated edition of Cuvier's 'The animal kingdom, arranged according to its organization' (1834). Partly it agrees, verbatim, with another Cuvier translation, 'The book of nature: embracing a condensed survey of the animal kingdom', a work published anonymously in Philadelphia (also in 1834), and with H. McMutrie's 'abridged version, for the use of students' of Cuvier's influential work (also 1834). Some parts, may have been arranged after other works. 1834 seems to be a breakthrough year for Cuvier's (and Lamarck's) system of genera in Great Britain, the last stronghold of the overly simple Linnaean system. A very neatly written and easily readable text in an unusually nice binding. Nissen ZBI, 1015 (Griffith & Pigeon). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

"Allgemeine Bemerkungen". Autograph manuscript signed. Offenbach, 3. II. 1834.

1834. 4to. 1 p. Preface to his list of Mozart's musical manuscripts: "Die hierin thematisch verzeichneten Manuscripte von W. A. Mozart, geb. - J. A. André, a talented pianist and son of the Offenbach music publisher Johann André, "acquired Mozart's manuscript archive for 3150 fl. in the year 1800, after Haydn apparently had pointed out the widow's precarious financial situation and Breitkopf & Härtel had declined a purchase in spite of long consideration [...] Thanks to the efforts of Abbé M. Stadler, Constanze's second husband G. N. v. Nissen was able to prepare a checklist in 1798 which would be published in 1828 as an appendix to his Life of Mozart, but the manuscript of which had been the basis of the negotiations. In 1805 and 1828 André published the most important precursor to the Köchelverzeichnis: 'W. A. Mozarts thematischer Katalog [...] nebst einem erläuternden Vorbericht von A. André'. In 1841 he published a checklist, prepared by his student Heinrich Henkel (1822-99), listing all of Mozart's original manuscripts still in his possession, with the purpose of selling them to the highest bidder. After his death the remaining manuscripts were dispersed among his heirs by lottery [...] His lasting credit must be his care for the works of Mozart, based not only on the considerations of a publisher or on the mere joy of possession, but more specifically on his appreciation for the master's epoch-making significance" (cf. MGG I, 459f.). - Damage to the right edge, some tears reaching into the text.

The Naval Officer's Guide for Preparing Ships at Sea

London: Richard Bentley, 1834. 12mo. xii, 328 pp. This text is entirely taken up with instructions for rigging a ship, and working the rigging to perform various evolutions at sea. The hundreds of details are gone through methodically, from anchors to yards, in all their varieties, and all the tasks that can be performed upon them. Scarce in the trade, especially in this first edition. Harland, in the bibliography to his ?Seamanship in the Age of Sail? only cites the 1848 edition of Martelli?s book. Bound in nicely gilt full black morocco, with gold anchors, rules and a figure of a goddess of navigation. A lovely copy.

A systematic treatise on the theory and practice of draining land, &c. ... containing hints and directions for the culture and improvement of bog, moss, moor ... the whole illustrated by plans and sections

Edinburgh: University Press, 1834. Third edition, revised and enlarged, colored issue, 4to, pp. xi, [1], 250; 25 hand-colored plates (3 folding); a slightly worn but still very good copy in original diced terracotta cloth-backed blue paper-covered boards, printed paper label on upper cover, reading in part "Price 21s. plain: 25s. coloured;" includes the "postscript on pp. [247]-250 which was subsequently printed, and laid in is a separately published and apparently unrecorded Critical Notices, with Analyses, of Johnstone's Systematic Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Draining Land [drop-title], Edinburgh, 1835, 4to, pp. 10; self-wraps; stitched, as issued; some spotting to front page, extolling the work and including several lines from a letter of recommendation from Robert Stevenson, the pre-eminent civil engineer of his day and father of Robert Louis Stevenson. Includes sections on the embankment of sea-shores and rivers, and weirs and dams for the use of mills, all illustrated with 25 attractive hand-colored plates of dirt, grass, and water. Allibone notes that the book was first published in 1797, and that the last edition was in 1841 in octavo. Apparently this is the only edition with color plates, and we presume that much of the edition was not colored. Johnstone's theories, though popular and even influential in his day, have not withstood the rigors of responsible drainage.

Amsterdam, C. G. Sulpke, 1834.

1834. 4to. (2), 143, (1) pp. With 6 hand-coloured engraved plates (1 folding, 5 full-page) by D. Sluyter after H. van Oort. Contemporary stiff grey wrappers. Rare separate issue of Numan's detailed and beautifully illustrated study of the larvae of the equine botfly (family Oestridae), an internal parasite of horses. Alexander Numan (1780-1852) discusses the different species of botfly found in the stomachs of horses, the way the eggs are transferred to the intestines, their growth and development, the effect on the health of the host animal, and the various ways they may be removed. The essay appeared both in the Nieuwe Verhandelingen der eerste klasse van het Koninklijk-Nederlandse Instituut van Wetenschappen, and in the present, much rarer separate issue, where only the plates refer to the journal. - Numan completed his medical studies at Groningen in 1804. He wrote a prize-winning essay on the Keil dysentery epidemic of 1810, which appeared in 1812. In the same year he was asked to translate a veterinary manual and later to write his own, which went through five editions from 1819 to 1856. When the first Dutch veterinary school opened at Utrecht in 1821, no suitable professor could be found in the practice, and the position went to Numan. He went on to write many excellent articles, the best known of which discusses cow pox (1831). - Wrappers slightly damaged at spine, but still very good. A fine copy of a rare and well-illustrated essay by a pioneering veterinary researcher. KVK (1 copy). NCC (4 copies). Not in Garrison/M., Landwehr Coloured Plates, Nissen ZBI.

Map of the Colony of New South Wales.

Mitchell & Carmichael, London 1834 - Dissected hand-coloured engraved map, backed on linen as issued, 625 x 1340 mm.; a remarkably handsome large-format map; preserved in the original green cloth slip-case, early manuscript label to front. Very rare: the so-called "Map of the Nineteen Colonies" drawn by Major Thomas Mitchell and engraved by John Carmichael in Sydney. This large-format separately-issued map is highly prized as it was both drawn and engraved in Sydney, ignoring the standard protocol of forwarding manuscripts to London to have them engraved there, and is 'an exquisite example of the engraver's art' (Butler, Printed, p. 81).An excellent note accompanying the copy of the map in the State Library of New South Wales, which lists the map as one of the more significant in their collection, comments that the "Map of the Nineteen Counties" was compiled 'from 900 surveys, and engraved by Mitchell and Carmichael, costing Mitchell nearly £1200.' A copy of the map was submitted to Colonial Secretary Macleay in February 1834, and the map was then sent to Lord Stanley (the dedicatee, then serving as Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, but later a three-times Prime Minister of the United Kingdom) on 5 May 1834. The Library's catalogue notes that despite being said to have been "republished in London", this may in fact have been a stratagem against piracy of the map by implying an earlier full issue. It was first advertised for sale in Sydney in the Gazette for 14 July 1835.Mitchell had arrived in the Colony in 1827 and became Surveyor-General on the death of Oxley the following year. His work on completing a comprehensive survey of New South Wales was his first major task, and this map is therefore notable not only as the crowning achievement of his early career, but as the first major work to plot his roads west to Bathurst and south towards Goulburn (here shown as "roads planned and marked out by Major Mitchell, and made or in progress by the Gangs under his orders"). In late 1831 and 1832 Mitchell was away on his exploration of New England, but by 1833 criticism of the backwardness of the survey forced Mitchell to complete this map and arrange to have it sent to London.         Autograph letter signed "Spontini" to [Johann Valentin] Teichmann

      - 1 page. Octavo. Dated [Berlin,] December [?]28, 1834. In French (with translation). Spontini asks Teichmann to thank those involved in a production of his opera, Agnes, for which he would also like seats for that evening's performance."I beg Councillor Teichmann to convey my regards to the choir members, extra choir members, the two choir directors and Mrs. Hochstetter, as well as to several assistants who led the rehearsals of Agnes with zeal and talent, to which Mr. Henning, the music director, contributed the most of all." Slightly worn, browned, foxed and stained; creased at folds and somewhat overall; several edge tears; some show-through; remnants of former mount to verso. Spontini "dominated serious grand opera of the early 19th century in Paris and later in Berlin. Although Fernand Cortez was taken out of the repertory in 1810, that year proved to be the peak of Spontini's career. In February he was appointed directeur de la musique de l'opéra buffa at the Théâtre de l'Impératrice and was able to put his ideas for repertory - concentrating on performances of Cimarosa and Mozart - into practice at the Théâtre Italien. In July he was awarded a newly created prize for the best opera of the decade, for La vestale, and in the same month he married Marie-Cathérine-Céleste Erard, daughter of the pianoforte maker and publisher Jean-Baptiste Erard. After Napoleon's fall from power Spontini withdrew from the public eye for some time, but he greeted the return of the Bourbon kings in August 1814 with Pélage and he was restored for a time to the position at the Théâtre Italien which he had given up in 1812." Anselm Gerhard in Grove Music Online. His last opera, Agnes von Hohenstaufen, was first performed at the Königliches Opernhaus in Berlin on June 12, 1829. After extensive revisions, a second version was performed on December 6, 1837; the present letter most probably refers to a production of the second version of the work. Spontini was the Generalmusikdirektor and leading musician at the court of King Friedrich Wilhelm III in Berlin at this time, where he was welcomed by such prominent intellectuals as E.T.A. Hoffmann. A devotee of the theater, Johann Valentin Teichmann (1791-1860) was in close contact with prominent artists, musicians, and dramatic poets in Berlin. His literary output included a history of the Royal Theatre in Berlin from 1740 to 1840 and a collected edition of letters from writers, such as Goethe and Schiller, who corresponded with the Royal Theatre.

The Dispatches of Field Marshal the Duke of Wellington during his various Campaigns in India, Denmark, Portugal, Spain, The Low Countries, and France. From 1799 to 1818. Compiled from Official and Authentic Documents.

London: John Murray, 1834–39 - 14 volumes, octavo (214 × 125 mm). Contemporary diced calf by Henington & Galabin (with their ticket), spines gilt tooled on the raised bands, diced in the compartments, red and green morocco twin labels, two-line gilt border on sides enclosing three-line blind border, marbled edges and endpapers. All volumes carry the ownership inscription of Aubrey G.K. Davies-Cooke, Captain 10th Royal Hussars, dated March 6th 1908. Davies-Cooke served with his regiment during the Boer War and possibly when it saw action on the North-West Frontier in 1908. Some volumes neatly rebacked with the original spines laid down, others skilfully refurbished, a few marks to covers, a little rubbing to extremities, light browning in places, but overall a very good set. First editions throughout, complete with the index, and in this case with the extremely uncommon supplemental volume relating to the India sections of volumes I, II, and III. Indispensable for the study of Wellington's campaigns, and perhaps the only source for the occasional glimpse of the man. The editor had served "in all the Peninsular engagements down to the storming of Ciudad Rodrigo on 19 January 1812, where he led the 'forlorn hope' He was concussed in the breach from a head wound, but after regaining consciousness made his way to the citadel and took prisoner the governor, General Barrié, at dinner. The governor surrendered his sword, which Gurwood presented to Wellington. It was returned to him next day when Lord Fitzroy Somerset buckled it on Gurwood in the breach where he had been wounded" (ODNB). Gurwood was wounded three times in the Peninsula, and severely so at Waterloo, in 1837 he became one of Wellington's secretaries, "and was entrusted with the editing of the duke's general orders and selections from his dispatches. Gurwood and the duke were old friends, the duke taking care of Gurwood. He was made CB and in 1839 was appointed a deputy lieutenant of the Tower of London with a salary of £768 p.a., as well as a pension of £2000. However, Gurwood's closing years were clouded by ill health, partly as a result of his war wounds and partly because of the strain of editing the Dispatches. This resulted in a severe depressive illness, and on Christmas day 1845 Gurwood committed suicide ". With an intriguing provenance: the supplemental volume, dealing with India, is inscribed in pencil "N. B. Edmonstone Esq" and tipped-in to the Index volume is a docket (dated 15th November 1838) stating: "Wellington's Dispatches Vol 12, Neil Benjamin Edmonstone Esq, [and initialled] JG". Edmonstone (1765-1841) had a distinguished career as an officer of the East India Company who served in India under Wellington, and has been described as "one of the most valuable officials and far-seeing statesmen which the Indian civil service has ever produced". The initials"JG" could be those of the editor John Gurwood, but in a secretarial hand, and one can speculate that the bookplate removed from volume I may have been Edmontone's. Sandler 3444.         Narrative of a Voyage to the Southern Atlantic Ocean in the Years 1828,29,30

LONDON: Richard Bentley, 1834 [published date: 1834]. Rare First edition in 2 volumes, half-title in volume 2. 8vo. 9.25" x 6" inches (LxB). Pp. xi, (1, List of Maps & Plates), 399, (1, colophon), (4, ads); (1, half title), viii, 398 pages with 5 aquatint plates by J. Clark after E.N. Kendall; 2 maps (1 folding). Fine Modern original 1/2 calf leather binding over marbled boards, gilt decorated spine with 5 raised bands and two red & black gilt lettered morocco labels. An account of the three-year scientific expedition by the surgeon of the naval sloop Chanticleer. Exploration in the South Atlantic included Cape Horn and Staten Island, as well as the South Shetlands which were charted in detail and claimed for the British Crown. Lieutenant Edward Kendall was landed on Deception Island. Webster was the surgeon for this British expedition, which was sent to the southern waters off South America and Cape Horn to record pendulum observations and to chart Staten Island and the South Shetlands. The Chanticleer stopped at Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo, Patagonia, Staten Island, the South Shetland Islands, the Cape of Good Hope, St. Helena, and other South American ports. Abbey, Travel 11; Hill 1842; Sabin 102429; Spence 1245. Capt. Henry Foster was a British naval officer, scientist and a Fellow of the Royal Society, who took part in expeditions to both the Arctic and Antarctic, and made various notable scientific observations. From 1828 to 1831, he was commander of HMS Chanticleer and led the British Naval Expedition to the South Atlantic, surveying the South Shetland Islands and notably Deception Island off the Antarctic Peninsula. Aside from surveying coasts and ocean currents, the main purpose of the expedition was to determine the variation in gravitational attraction by means of a Kater invariable pendulum to measure observations, together with a more accurate determination of longitude. Many South American ports were visited and the area from Cape Horn south to the South Shetlands hydrographically surveyed. One particularly interesting plate of Deception Island shows the thermal springs at Pendulum Cove. There are numerous geological and natural history observations including penguins and seals. In the three year voyage, no loss of life was recorded through accident or sickness. Sadly, Capt. Foster drowned in the Chagres River in Panama in 1831, attempting to complete his observations on the river. His research was published, posthumously, in 1834, along with the private journal of W.H.B. Webster, Surgeon of the Sloop by Webster himself, and is an important account of a South Atlantic and Antarctic voyage in the early Nineteenth Century.

Vicaire III, 759.

Bibliotheca Heberiana. Catalogue of the Library of the Late Richard Heber, Esq... Removed from his House in York-Street, Westminster, Which Will be Sold by Auction, by Messrs. Sotheby and Son [Evans; Wheatley]..

[London: Printed by W. Nicol], 1834-37. 13 Volumes bound in five, large 8vo printed on good wove paper, [iv], 388; xii, 363, [1]; [iv], 295, [1]; vii, [iii], 355, [1]; [iv], 257; [iv], 314; [iv], 306; [iv], 170; [iv], 195, [1]; [iv], 117, [1]; [iv], 189, [1]; [iv], 83, [1]; [iv], 82, [2]pp., an extraordinary association copy of this complete set of the English sale catalogues of the library of Richard Heber (the 13th volume is notoriously rare), with the ownership signature of William Pickering on the endpaper of this first volume, also his initials in volumes 3 and 5, Pickering obviously followed parts of these sales very closely, and his notes?including prices, buyers, and even a few corrections?appear in the margins, he was especially interested in Heber's incredible collection of Shakespeare quartos?some unique?and his manuscript coded annotations (using Greek letters: obviously indicating how much he was ready to bid) appear next to about two dozen lots, of which he bought two (first editions of King Lear and The Merchant of Venice), the notes, prices and buyers' are sporadic, and as far as we can tell are in Pickering's hand, about half the lots in the first two volumes are annotated, particularly those relating to English Literature, the others are less annotated, although here and there there are runs of perhaps 100-200 consecutive lots with annotations, a bit of occasional minor internal spotting, final leaf of part 1 and title of part 5 repaired with archival paper, else fine and bright, recently bound in quarter vellum and marbled boards, titles on spine in calligraphy, a nice set with good margins and uncut. Heber was a book collector on a monumental scale, De Ricci estimated his library between two and three hundred thousand volumes. The sales took place at a time when the market was absolutely glutted and there were practically no buyers. The total realised was £65,774, for books which had cost their late owner a good deal over £100,000. "The Dibdinian age may be aptly said to terminate with the dispersal of the gigantic library accumulated by Richard Heber, a bibliomaniac if there ever was one... From 1800 to 1830, he purchased at every London sale... He thought nothing of securing whole libraries... When he died, his books filled two houses in London, one at Hodnet, one at Oxford, one at Ghent and one at Paris, not to speak of smaller stores at... other Continental cities. The total number of volumes in his library must have been between two and three hundred thousand, and it is doubtful whether any private individual has ever owned so large a library... The London sales produced £56,744, for books which had cost their late owner over £100,000. The market was absolutely glutted and there were practically no new buyers... The Heber catalogues, although... arranged in the most inconvenient manner, are daily consulted by every bibliographer... His series of Continental books, early Italian and Spanish works, later Latin poetry, humanistic treatises... were unrivalled... The real strength...was, however, in the field of early English literature... For thirty years he... purchased nearly every item which came on the market".?De Ricci, p.102. Organised according to the residences where Heber kept his libraries, the present catalogues number 1 - 13 and were held in 1834, 1835, 1836 & 1837. Sotheby's managed the sale for parts 1- 3 and 9 - 10; R. H. Evans, for parts 4 and 6 - 8 and 11; B. Wheatley, parts 5 and 12-13.

        Letter signed. Bombay, 3. I. 1834.

1834. Small 4to. 5 pp. followed by 2 pp. extract from the Earl of Clare's letter about a suitable residence for the Commander in Chief at Bombay. An important letter, as Commander-in-Chief in the East Indies, to Sir James Graham, First Lord of Admiralty, following a conference with Lord Clare "on the subject of our relations with the Imaum of Muscat, and the probable views of the American Government in establishing a Factory at Zanzebar". - Discussion at the highest level about the consequences of the 1833 commercial treaty between Muscat and the United States, which led to Zanzibar becoming the great trade emporium of the Western Indian Ocean. Found among the papers of Sir James Graham (1792-1861), First Lord of Admiralty. Gore informs Graham that the Americans had taken the Imaum of Muscat to Zanzibar on board the American ship Peacock, that "the American Flag was struck, and the Imaum's hoisted in its place. That a piece of land, of about 40 acres, is given, and permission for a Consul and four Residents to establish a factory there". Gore is sending a ship to Muscat to ascertain the facts "under the semblance of a complimentary visit to His Highness". In this letter Gore speculates on the diplomatic consequences of the Imaum's action. "For if, at any future period, a struggle should take place between England and Russia, their known connection with America may cause great inconvenience to His Majesty's Government to counteract the influence which the sublety of the Americans will not fail to obtain over such a Prince as the Imaum of Muscat: who, under existing circumstances is an important friend, but under such as above alluded to will become a very inconvenient Foe - or even neutral - giving Rendezvous in a fine Port, to an American Squadron [...]". - Vice-Admiral Sir John Gore served in Canada and the West Indies in the 1780s, and commanded the Windsor Castle in the actions off Toulon on 13 March and 13 July 1795. In 1801 he was appointed to the Medusa, in which Nelson hoisted his flag during the operations off Boulogne. Apart from two years in India, he continued to command a number of ships off the coast of Spain and in the Mediterranean until the end of the Napoleonic Wars. From 1831 to 1835 he was commander-in-chief in the East Indies. - In fine condition; folded.

Autograph letter signed ("John Franklin"). [London], 31. VII. 1834.

1834. 4to. 3 pp. Fine, long letter by the great explorer (who would famously perish in his attempt to chart the Northwest Passage) to G. W. Crowe, the English consul at Patras, about the war in Greece and Kolokotronis's trial for treason: "I have within these few days received very gratifying letters from my wife though of late as late as 5th May she was preparing to avail herself of the first convenient conveyance to Greece [...] I have written fully to my wife in the letter committed to your kind care which I shall be obliged by your keeping for her if she be not with you or sending to her if she be in Greece, and I will write if possible another shorter one which I will thank you to send to the care of Mr. Wilkinson [British Consul] at Syra in case she should be still at that Island. [...] I have now but little time or inclination to enter into the busy & changeable field of our Home Politicks, as far as I can gather the present Cabinet will be allowed to carry the half measures which they have proposed for the security of Ireland. Their continuance in office does not appear to be grounded on any very firm basis, and it is generally admitted they have lost a good head by the retirement of Lord Grey. The result of the trial of Colocotroni & Calliopoli is disgraceful to any mind conversant with British justice. Allowing the evidence to have been defective and the Judges to have been divided in opinion could any conscience reconcile the judgment of death upon them. The King has done wisely in commuting their punishment and I trust that one of the first acts of his assuming the Government will be the granting them pardon. As for de Wrede if he can be proved guilty & sent to the Galleys he will have richly deserved it. I am glad the other conspirators have been set free [...]. I trust the Bavarian troops have been taught circumspection & the danger of treating an enemy too lightly by the transactions in Maina [...] My books I hear arrived safe but cannot as yet be presented while the King remains at Argos [...]". - Franklin and his crew left Greece in December 1833, and on his return to England was made a Knight Commander of the Guelphic order of Hanover. Franklin's wife was the accomplished traveler Lady Jane Franklin (1792-1875), whom he married in 1828. After the long absences necessitated by John's service in the Mediterranean, she accompanied him to Tasmania and became a popular philanthropist, activist and explorer. Our letter discusses Lady Franklin's quarantine in the lazaretto, or quarantine station, on the Aegean island of Syra (or Syros), one of the locations travelers between the Near East and Europe were forced to wait out a quarantine period as outbreaks of the plague were still prevalent. "The danger of treating an enemy too lightly by the transactions in Maina," undoubtedly refers to the peninsula of Maina, which fought valiantly during the war of independence but violently insisted on retaining local control after the war. This struggle culminated in the assassination of the Greek head of state Ioannis Kapodistrias in 1831 after he ordered the imprisonment of the "bey" or chieftain of Maina. - A fascinating letter detailing the political situation in Greece and England as well as the nature of travel in the 1830s. Folded and with some very minor paper loss resulting from the wax seal tear and affecting a few words. Some minor paper restoration is evident on the address leaf. Overall in very good condition.

Gazette. At a time when some questioned the value of the empire, Martin was its spokesman. He favoured a reformed colonial policy and, as a proprietor of the East India Company (1838?43), debated both at India House and through journal articles. But his lack of financial backing and his tendency to rush to judgement were factors minimizing his effectiveness; the former led him to seek ex post facto official recompense for activities freely entered into, the latter lost him support at key moments. Martin, however, had a ready pen and his importance lies primarily in his chronicling of empire and his exposition of political and social issues, particularly in the context of non-Ricardian economics. The very diversity of his activities and writings?267 printed works and 580 surviving unpublished letters and memoranda?underlines his significance. See ODNB.

Overall in very good condition. 246 pp. *** FIRST EDITION. Ardent justification of the response to papal decrees concerning appointment of the bishop who will have jurisdiction in Buenos Aires, and publication of important ecclesiastical decrees in the local vulgate (i.e., Spanish). The author proposes that any papal bulls or other decrees concerning the local population be presented to the Fiscal for review. In the introductory notes the Fiscal insists that recent events at Rome have impinged upon the sovereignty of Argentina and threaten further harm. This can be viewed as a part of Rosas' policy toward his critics, the university, the press, and the Church, which established his supremacy in Buenos Aires province by 1835.*** Palau VIII, 481.
