Naturgeschichte und Abbildungen der Menschen und der Saugethiere?

J.J. Honnegger, circa, Zurich 1834 - Folio, 74 lithograph plates, original pale yellow front wrapper bound in; some significant foxing to some plates although mostly to the margins, letterpress with browning and spotting, watermarking to the edge of many plates but not affecting the images; altogether a very good copy in contemporary half calf with marbled boards, spine sunned, repaired at head. Rare, revised edition of this zoological study of mammals, including many Australian species, with fine illustrations of the Tasmanian tiger, wombat, kangaroo and platypus. The plates are newly engraved by Honegger. The author Schinz served as professor of zoology at Zurich, where he founded the zoological collection and wrote a number of works in related fields including similar studies of branches of zoology and anthropology. Schinz prepared a great series of such works, including a history of birds, reptiles, fish, and, given his concomitant interest in ethnography, another anthropological work on the peoples of the world. This is a particularly uncommon work and, as is always the case with the prolific Schinz, it is bibliographically complex. A different two-volume work by Schinz with a similar title was first published in Zürich in 1824, but this Honnegger edition appears to have been first published in 1834 (see another copy held in the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, although the Berlin copy has 125 pp. of letterpress, while the present copy has 128 pp.). A second revised Honegger edition, easily recognised by the updated imprint "In der Honeggerschen Lithographischen Anstalt", was published in 1840. No copy of any of these editions appears to be held in any Australian collection. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Autograph letter signed, in English, to John Baron

Nancy, 1834. Nancy, 1834. <p>Valentin, Louis (1758-1829). Autograph letter signed, in English, to John Baron (1786-1851). 3pp. Nancy, April 25, 1824. 182 x 119 mm. With: Rapport présenté à son excellence le Ministre de l&#146;Intérieur, par le comité central de vaccine, sur les vaccinations pratiquées en France pendant les années 1821 et 1822. 8vo. [4], 99pp. Paris: L&#146;Imprimerie Royale, November 1823. Together 2 items; Valentin&#146;s autograph letter tipped to the first leaf of the Rapport. Quarter morocco, marbled boards in period style. Rapport a little foxed, but fine otherwise.</p><p>Excellent letter discussing vaccination and Edward Jenner from French physician Louis Valentin, the leading promoter of vaccination in France, to John Baron, Jenner&#146;s first biographer, whose two-volume Life of Edward Jenner was published in 1838. A native of Nancy, Valentin spent seven or eight years in Haiti and the United States where he practiced smallpox inoculation. He returned to France in 1798, the year in which Jenner&#146;s famous Inquiry was published, and in the following year published Traité historique et pratique de l&#39;inoculation (1799-1800), co-authored with François Dezoteux, which was the first French book to mention Jenner&#146;s work. Although at first skeptical, Valentin soon adopted Jenner&#146;s methods and became actively involved in the spread of vaccination throughout France. He traveled to London in 1803 to meet Jenner and two years later published a Notice biographique sur le docteur Jenner (1805), which he reissued in a revised and expanded edition in 1824, the year after Jenner&#146;s death, under the title Notice historique sur le docteur Jenner.</p><p>Valentin&#146;s letter to Jenner&#146;s biographer mentions the Notice historique, which Valentin was then working on, and other works by him on vaccination and inoculation, as well as the present copy of the Comité Central de Vaccine&#146;s Rapport for 1821-22, which he enclosed with the letter:</p><p>"I send to you the last report of the Committee of Vaccine for 1821 & 1822 which ought to have been deposited at Gabon&#146;s in Paris. It is very thin as that of 1820. . . .</p><p>"Your last favor 14th present is arrived very opportunely three days ago. I was anxiously waiting for it and had postponed the print of my Notice hist. on Jenner. Now, it is going on, and I hope it will be more correct than the first, thanks to your kindness and obliging care. But, as to the sum which you believe was not given by the King to Jenner, I have only said: On fit espérer que le Roi donnerait 500£ [it was hoped that the King would give £500] as I had already published in 1802 that the King had paid it, and I had given to Jenner in 1803 a copy of my Résultats de l&#146;inoculation de la vaccine and that he made no objection about such remuneration, consigned in it. I leave the affaire [sic] in doubt. The phrase in the text was impossible to be changed. </p><p>"My writing is increased of six or seven pages more than the first edition. I wish it might be worthy of your approbation and that of the public. I hope that in eight days I shall have the pleasure of sending to you through the post two copies of it . . . When you have read it please to write and let know your judgement to your most faithfull friend Louis Valentin."</p><p>Valentin added a long postscript to his letter in which he further discusses vaccination and Jenner:</p><p>"P.S. I know that De Carro&#146;s work, Vaccination in Grece, Persie &c. [i.e., Joannes de Carro&#146;s Histoire de la vaccination en Turquie, en Grèce, et aux Indes orientales (1804)], which I possess, does not make any mention of that practice by the Bramines in India, but I have quoted his letters published in the Bibliot. britan. . . .</p><p>"M. Dupau [i.e., J.-Amédée Dupau, author of Notice historique sur le Dr. Edward Jenner, inventeur de la vaccine (1824)] has committed a fault page 8th lines 7, 8, 9 of his Notice for not having repeated exactly what I have said of Washington applied to Jenner. He causes W. to speak so. Wash. was dead, 9 years since, when a French[man] said, in speaking of his life, written by Marshall, and translated in Paris by Henry in 1808: ce n&#146;est pas ce qu&#146;on entreprend, c&#146;est ce qu&#146;on achève et qu&#146;on affermit qui fait la gloire [it is not what we undertake, it is what we achieve and strengthen that gives us glory] . . ."</p><p>Bazin, Vaccination&#151;A History (2011), passim. </p>

Two Expeditions into the Interior of Southern Australia , during the years 1828, 1829, 1830 and 1831: with observations on the Soil, Climate, and General Resources of the Colony of New South Wales? Second Edition

Smith, Elder and Co, London 1834 - Two volumes, octavo, with a chart and a large folding map (crudely repaired with tape), 13 engraved plates (four of newly-discovered birds with original handcolouring); manuscript presentation dated 1874; a fine and handsome set in contemporary plum calf by Ramage, bookplates of Harold L. Sheard, bound without advertisements. Presentation copy from Lady Sturt. Presentation copy from Sturt's widow: the rare second edition of this account of Sturt's first two expeditions: 'an important book, recounting discoveries of the highest consequence' (Australian Rare Books). A manuscript inscription in both volumes reads: 'Frederick Peake In remembrance of the Author From C.C. Sturt 1874'. Sturt married Charlotte Christiana Greene on 20 September 1834, and she lived until 1887, almost twenty years after Sturt's death. After his death Charlotte was granted a civil list pension of £80 a year, and the queen granted her the title of Lady Sturt. Frederick Peake was a close friend of Charles Sturt, as is evidenced by the correspondence between them printed in the Life of Charles Sturt (1899). Sturt's first expedition set out from Sydney in 1828, with a brief from Governor Darling to follow the course of the Macquarie River. Within the first month he, and his second-in-command Hamilton Hume, had discovered the extent of the Macquarie Marshes. To the north they discovered and named the Darling River, and went on to trace the Bogan and Castlereagh rivers into the Darling, and the Macquarie into the Castlereagh. On his return to Sydney, Sturt pushed for command of an expedition to follow the Darling River to the supposed inland sea, however was instead commissioned to trace the Murrumbidgee River toward the south coast. Travelling along the river by boat, they were swept into a much broader fast-flowing river which they named the Murray, without realising it was the Hume River earlier discovered by Hume and Hovell. Sturt also discovered the junction of the Darling and the Murray, before reaching Lake Alexandrina. The most arduous aspect of the expedition awaited: after the vessel which was supposed to meet them on the south coast failed to materialise, Sturt and his men, with depleted provisions, were forced to row against the current for nearly one thousand miles to Sydney. They arrived in Sydney after many weeks of starvation and gruelling exertion. This is the second edition of Sturt's account of over four thousand miles of exploration over a four-year period. It was written while Sturt was in England, undergoing treatment for the blindness that had struck him during the voyage home. The large folding map of Australia, sometimes missing, is present in this copy (though with an old crude tape repair at two edges).

[WoO 62]. Autograph musical manuscript of a portion of the composer&#39;s oratorio, "Des Heilands letzte Stunden," for choir and piano 4-hands

4 pp. written on 2 leaves of a bifolium. Oblong folio (ca. 257 x 345 mm.). Notated in ink on 12-stave hand-ruled paper, the pages numbered 115-118 in pencil. A total of 21 measures. Text by Friedrich Rochlitz. With manuscript annotation to upper margin of first page possibly in the hand of Spohr&#39;s widow. Unsigned. No date, but 1834. Together with: An additional leaf from the same manuscript containing 2 pages with a manuscript note, most probably in the hand of Spohr&#39;s widow, identifying the work, stating that it was composed in Kassel in 1834, and that the present manuscript consists of page 121 [and 122] of the score. Slightly worn; minor fraying to edges; some browning, heavier to first page. In very good condition overall. The additional leaf somewhat browned and separated at center by a neat vertical split. . "Regarded by many contemporaries as worthy of a place beside Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven in the pantheon of the greatest composers, he has, together with Gluck and Cherubini, been allotted a considerably lower status by posterity. Mozart&#39;s Figaro and Wagner&#39;s Tristan were both composed during Spohr&#39;s lifetime; his own work looks, Janus-like, towards both the formalism and clarity of the Classical tradition, and the structural and harmonic experimentation associated with 19th-century Romanticism..." "... In the field of oratorio, Spohr made a distinctive contribution to the music of his day. Die letzten Dinge (1825&#150;6) marked an epoch in the history of 19th-century oratorio. In this work he adopted a number of the characteristics developed in his operas; it is notable for its avoidance of closed forms and for its expressiveness, attained through the use of chromatic harmony... and masterly orchestration... Many of the finest musicians of the day were profoundly affected by it." "... In 1834&#150;5, inspired by Bach&#39;s St Matthew Passion, of which he gave the first Kassel performance in 1883, Spohr composed his Passion oratorio, Des Heilands letzte Stunden, to a text of Friedrich Rochlitz."         Aquatint engraving of the composer by Franz Hegi (1774-1850). Ludwig van Beethoven in Erlengebüsch bei Wien

1834. 200 x 170 mm. Beethoven is depicted in a bucolic setting reclining on the banks of a stream surrounded by woods, a sheet of manuscript music in his left hand, a pen in his right; a woman stands in the background surrounded by a flock of sheep with a village in the distance. A fine impression on wove paper, without letters. . Appenzeller: Der Kupfersticher Franz Hegi von Zurich: Sein Leben und seine Werke, 1098. The present image perhaps alludes to the composition of Beethoven&#39;s 6th Symphony, the "Pastoral." Another version of this print was published in the Zürich Musikgesellschaft Almanac of 1834 (see Comini: The Changing Image of Beethoven: A Study in Mythmaking, figure 51).

Roman de la Violette, ou de Gerard de Nevers, En Vers, du XIIIe Siecle, Par Gibert de Montreuil; Publie, pour la premiere fois, d'apres deux manuscrits de la Bibliotheque Royale, par Francisque Michel

Paris: Chez Silvestre, 1834 Paris: Chez Silvestre, 1834. First Limited Edition Thus. Full Calf, with Blindstamping, Gilt Decoration, etc.. Fine. Eight spectacular hand-colored and illuminated plates on vellum. No. 20 of a limited edition of 200 total, and one of 15 copies on Hollande paper. 8vo. 22.5 by 15 cm, 9 by 6 inches. lxiv, [4 leaves], 334, [2] pp. Each of the plates is accompanied by a plain black and white lithographic version. The hand-colored versions easily pass for actual illuminated paintings, and indeed, the hand-colorist did not merely fill in color but also made some subtle changes to the illustration so that the hand-colored version does not match exactly the black and white one. The illumination on the vellum is of an uncommon precision and beauty so as to read as tantamount to manuscript, and the work is unquestionably superior to what one would find in the better works of Henry Shaw, who contemporaneously was producing iimportant books on the topic of illuminated manuscripts. The "Roman de la Violette" is based on the same story as Shakespeare's "Cymbeline". The binding of this copy is an exquisite example of French blindstamped leather of the period, with Greek-style ornament in the large centerpiece of the boards and a Gothic ornamental diaper impressed onto the spine, which also has raised bands. The binding has a few dings and tiny pinprick losses, and the joints have a slight goopiness of a earlier restoration, but the binding still comes off as very handsome. The volume itself fits into a custom slipcase with leather fringe and a wide ribbon pull. This copy had once belonged to the Ermitage in St. Petersburg.

Aquatint engraving of the composer by Franz Hegi (1774-1850).

A fine impression on wove paper, without letters.. Appenzeller: Der Kupfersticher Franz Hegi von Zurich: Sein Leben und seine Werke, 1098. The present image perhaps alludes to the composition of Beethoven's 6th Symphony, the "Pastoral." Another version of this print was published in the Zürich Musikgesellschaft Almanac of 1834 (see Comini: The Changing Image of Beethoven: A Study in Mythmaking, figure 51).

Horne wrote more than forty works in bibliography, Bible commentaries, and Christian apologetics. Horne&#39;s Introduction to the Critical Study and Knowledge of the Holy Scriptures was first published in 1818.       Stuttgart und Tubingen -J. G. Cotta Publishing, 1834. Stuttgart und Tubingen -J. G. Cotta Publishing, 1834 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Schiller&#39;s incredibleworks together in one volume. Featuring a portrait frontispiece. Includes a facsimile letter from Schiller to the rear. With armorial bookplate of Henry H. Davidson, 1919to front pastedown. Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller (10 November 1759 9 May 1805) was a German poet, philosopher, historian, and playwright. A contemporary and friend of Goethe, the names of these two now represent to many the pinnacle of German culture, and Schiller is considered Germany&#39;s most important classical playwright. They frequently discussed issues concerning aesthetics, and Schiller encouraged Goethe to finish works he left as sketches. This relationship and these discussions led to a period now referred to as Weimar Classicism. Goethe convinced Schiller to return to playwriting. He and Goethe founded the Weimar Theater, which became the leading theater in Germany. Their collaboration helped lead to a renaissance of drama in Germany. Condition: In a decorative full morocco binding. Externally, very attractive although somewhat rubbed. The rear joint is cracked. The front hinge is slightly strained although holding firm. Internally, firmly bound except for the first gathering which is working slightly loose. Lovely and bright throughout.         Souvenir de la Tarantella Napolitaine dirigée par Louis Puccinelli Maître de Dans dessinée par Gaétan Dura. Lith Gatti & Dura

Gatti & Dura [ca 1834], Naples - Quite rare. Not in Leslie, Beaumont or Magriel. Derra de Moroda 2105. OCLC (3 copies only). The drawings by Dura (1805-1878) and the colouring are particularly well-executed. The tarantella has roots in ancient history; it is said to derive its name from the city of Tarentum (modern-day Taranto), formerly a Greek settlement on the southern coast of Italy. Historians have identified representations of the dance in ancient Greek vase paintings and on the wall paintings at Pompeii.". According to a widespread legend, the dance acquired its name because it was used as a cure for the poisonous bite of the tarantula spider. Gurzau reports that this etymological point was debated at the Venice Congress and Folk Festival in 1949, and the participants concluded that the legend was based on the similarity of the two words rather than the actuality. In apparent contradiction to this conclusion is the fact that the tarantella is performed as a kind of exorcism by the practitioners of Tarantism, an Italian possession cult comparable to the zar cult of Ethiopia or Vodun in Haiti."Stylized tarantellas have been used to add a touch of local color to the ballet stage. An early example is the tarantella created for Fanny Elssler in Jean Corallli's ballet La Tarentule (1836), the plot of which centers around real and feigned bites of the tarantula." The International Encyclopedia of Dance, Vol. 6, p. 104.An important document for the reconstruction of the Neapolitan tarantella. IL MAGAZZINO PITTORICO ILLUSTRATO. ANNO I 1834.
