The dominant religious presence in Argentina, the Catholic Church was also its most important provider of social services and a powerful force in the national culture. Following independence from Spain in 1810, there were sharp disagreements within the national ruling elite over the proper degree of Church influence in the country. At the same time the Papacy, unwilling to offend Spain, condemned the revolutions sweeping South America at the time, which created additional tensions within Argentina. The Memorial Ajustado was written by Agrelo, the primary author of the 1813 Proyecto de Constitucion Argentina. It intended to clarify sections in the constitution concerning church-state relations. Illustrating in both single and multiple compositions 40+ botanical specimens on 14 engraved plates including Auricula, Tulip, Passiflora Elegans. A fine work on Victorian horticulture. In the early nineteenth century, botany and flower painting were popular and acceptable pastimes for accomplished gentlewomen, thus creating a desire for finely illustrated instructional manuals. As such, Britain alone witnessed the production of several botanical monthly magazines, and according to Wilfred Blunt in The Art of Botanical Illustration; among the more important works illustrated with colored plates is Joseph Harrison's Floricultural Cabinet. (1833-59). The work is intent on promoting floricultural knowledge with articles on the propagation and cultivation of the illustrated plants, extracts from related botanical periodicals and miscellaneous intelligence; a charming yet useful queries and answers section from subscribers of the Floricultural Cabinet. Joseph Harrison (1798-1856) horticulturist and writer, born in 1798 in Sheffield, Yorkshire was head gardener to the Right Hon. Lord Wharncliffe, Wortley Hall. In 1833 Harrison was elected an honorary member of the Doncaster, Bawtry, and Retford Horticultural Societies and commenced publication of the Floricultural Cabinet. A monthly magazine; The Floricultural Magazine claimed to embrace everything useful in horticulture, natural history, and rural economy, and was an immediate success. (DNB), DeBelder, Blunt

Verse poems at the end of the accounts of Shaw, Tomlinson and Smith. Some toning and edgewear, otherwise fine. * Shaw and Tomlinson appeared to have murdered in fits of rage sparked by disputes over money. In both cases witnesses were called to prove insanity. Smith, who may have been suffering from post-partum depression, threw her twelve-day old baby into a canal. Nobody proposed an insanity defense for her. Das hier vorliegende Plakat zeigt ihre drei Vorstellungen im August 1834 mit dem "Elephanten des Königs von Siam" im Münchner Botanischen Garten an; man bittet "das verehrte Publikum den Elephanten während der Vorstellung durchaus nichts von Eßwaaren in die Manege zu werfen". - Wohl als Vorprogramm zu Elefanten tritt der Sohn der Mme. Tourniaire, Louis Tourniaire mit zwei weiteren Kunstreitern in ihrer Nummer "Der Faßbinder von Keferloh" auf. Um 6 Uhr abends kann man täglich noch die Fütterung der Schlangen mit lebenden Hühnern und Kaninchen betrachten, auch ein Rhinozeros gilt es zu bewundern. - Mit leichten Faltspuren. Das Doppelblatt war wohl ursprünglich als Couvert gefaltet und verschlossen. Der Brief ist eine Kurzmitteilung an einen Bekannten ("Monsieur Bactron" ? ) über eine geplante Reise nach Aigues Mortes. Der Brief stammt wahrscheinlich aus dem Jahr 1834, am 15. Oktober 1834 verlies Alexandre Dumas Paris in Begleitung des Malers Godefroy Jadin für eine Reise nach Italien, die ihn auch über Arles, Les Beaux, Sainte-Marie de la mer und Marseille führte. 100 Gramm. The plates show ground plans and reconstructions of the monuments in the Forum Romanum and environs. Dedicated to Prince Francesco Borghese Aldobrandini. Despite the grand title, twenty-four of the maps illustrate states, as follows: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Illinois, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Missouri. There are also maps of the United States, Canada, Mexico (then including Texas, California, and the Southwest), the West Indies, and South America, and three hemispheric projections. Fifteen more of the maps are devoted to the countries of Europe, six to Asia, and two to Africa (one of the continent and one of Egypt). All of the maps are nicely executed and carefully colored by hand, showing different counties in the American maps, and provinces elsewhere. The American maps also show post roads. The first appearance of Finley's atlas was in 1824, with sixty maps.

      Mexico, 1834. Watercolors of various sizes, as indicated below; each mounted on card stock, archivally matted (19 x 23 inches) and protected with a Mylar sheet. Contemporary pencil inscriptions in bottom right corners. A few extremely minor clean tears in a few corners repaired. Watercolors very clean, colors bright and fresh. The set in near fine condition. A marvellous suite of four highly accomplished watercolors which served as the models for four lithographs published in Carl Nebel's VOYAGE PITTORESQUE ET ARCHÉOLOGIE, DANS LA PARTIE LA PLUS INTÉRESSANTE DU MEXIQUE. The watercolors all depict native and mestizo inhabitants situated in dry landscapes with hills in the background. The images represent a variety of local types and occupations, including Indian women, men, and children; adult mestizos; coal miners; mule skinners; and fruit vendors. The costumes are portrayed with much attention to detail, particularly the embroidered clothing worn by the native women and the male laborers' costumes; and the foregrounds and background are finely rendered with light washes. A German architect and painter, Nebel travelled to Mexico in 1829 "to paint scenes of a country he knew from the writings of Humboldt, Antonio León y Gama, Bernal Díaz del Castillo, and Hernán Cortés. He remained in Mexico until 1834, visiting and painting the cities of Puebla, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Guadalajara, Veracruz, Jalapa, Mexico, and San Luis Potosí. He returned to Europe and in Paris prepared his memorable VOYAGE PITTORESQUE ET ARCHÉOLOGIE with its fifty plates" (Howgego). The university trained artist "was drawn there at first by an interest in the archaeological remnants of the Aztec empire, but became a visual chronicler of modern Mexico as well. Nebel was one of many European artists intrigued by the landscape and peoples of the former Spanish empire in the Americas, barred from view for centuries, but from the 1820s onward open to both travel and investment, and of particular interest to the French and English. His book combines a taste for the picturesque with a clear-eyed evaluation of the country and its assets" (AMERICA PICTURED TO THE LIFE). Nebel's VOYAGE PITTORESQUE was first published in Paris in 1836 with fifty lithographic plates, twenty of which were issued in color. A Spanish translation of the work, utilizing the same plates, was published in Paris and Mexico three years later (but with nearly all the plates in the later edition handcolored or tinted). Of the twenty color lithographs in the 1836 edition, ten specifically portray local inhabitants of various classes; six of these are of natives or working-class mestizos. The present watercolors consists of four of these six images, including two of the three illustrations of Indians published in the VOYAGE. Comparison of these watercolors and the published images are instructive in regards to the lithographer's art and craft. The individuals in all of the lithographs are darker than in the original artwork, lending weight to the figures and providing both the natives and mestizos with darker skin than originally portrayed. Certain details, such as elements of costumes and architectural motifs, are highlighted or expanded in the published images, while other visual elements in the foreground and background of the lithographs are given less emphasis than in the original. Such changes between the original watercolors and the printed images highlight the technical and aesthetic concerns of the lithographer and publisher in creating reproduced images for the market. The four individual watercolors in this suite, with titles transcribed from the original pencil inscriptions and compared to the titles in the 1836 edition, are described as follows: 1) "Indios carboneros y la moradora de la vecinidad de Mexico." 11 x 15 inches. The lithograph of this image is entitled "Indios carboneros y la buradores de la vecin dad de Mexico," while the accompanying printed text reads: "Indios carboneros y laburadores de le vecindad de Mexico." Two Indian coal miners, one carrying a large wooden crate on his back which is secured by a head- brace, with an Indian woman carrying a child. The figures are accompanied by a mule transporting large wooden crates containing fruit. One of the men wears a handsome cloak of animal skins. 2) "Indios de la Sierra al S E de Mexico." 11 x 15 inches. This image is entitled "Indias de la Sierra al S.E. de Mexico" on the lithograph and in the printed text. Four Indian women in native costume, one holding flowers and accompanied by a young boy. All four women are wearing embroidered native clothing. Two of the women also have folded white cloths on their heads, while the one with the young boy wears an embroidered scarf as a hat. One woman, with her back to the viewer, is portrayed with red and blue cloth woven into her long braids. 3) "Gente de Sierra Lahonte entre Pahanlba y Misaubla." 9 3/4 x 13 inches. The lithograph is entitled "Gente de Tierra Caliente entre Papantla y Misantla," while the accompanying text reads: "Gente de la costa entre Papantla y Misantla." Two Mexican men, one offering or selling fruit to the other man sitting on horseback, and one Mexican woman carrying two pots on her head. The woman is standing in a classical pose, which is emphasized by the geometric motif decorating the bottom of her clothing. A local building with a straw roof and a larger stone structure, perhaps a church, is seen in the background. 4) "Arrieros." 11 3/4 x 16 inches. The lithograph has the same title, the published text with the variant spelling, "Arieros." Three Mexican mule skinners working to coax an overloaded mule back on its feet. The man on the left, leading the animal with a rope, is dressed in a full poncho. The other two men, one riding a horse and brandishing a whip, are pushing and driving the mule from the rear. In the background, one other horse and three other mules with loads are seen. In the published image the mule's load is considerably darker and looks even heavier than in this watercolor. The three men are also portrayed with darker skin than seen in this image. Nebel's renown as an illustrator working in Mexico was later confirmed with the publication of George Wilkins Kendall's THE WAR BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND MEXICO ILLUSTRATED. This account of the Mexican-American War, published in 1851, included twelve handcolored lithographic plates based on Nebel's paintings of major battles of the war. These dozen images became the source for numerous prints by other artists, who copied and adapted Nebel's illustrations of various conflicts. In a similar manner, many of Nebel's earlier illustrations in his VOYAGE PITTORESQUE were also reproduced and modified by the artist himself as well as other printers and publishers. These included topographic views found in numerous works on the Mexican-American War as well as his depictions of local inhabitants. "Nebel's [VOYAGE] was a classic. It was published in both French and Spanish editions, and several of the fifty illustrations, many of them of the costumbrista or costume-picture genre, were widely copied" - EYEWITNESS TO WAR.       London, 1834. From the first edition of THE BIRDS OF AMERICA. One of Audubon's greatest images: against a background of western prairie land, a small incident of the greatest importance to its participants takes place in the immediate foreground. Two cock Pinnated Grouse (or Great Prairie Chickens) fight for the attention of a lone female. Audubon captures the moment when, after long preliminaries of booming cries, bluster and circling, one of the males, driven beyond endurance, launches a physical attack on his rival. The female looks on with fascination. A carefully balanced composition -- the bulk of the left hand bird is offset by the fragile beauty of the martagon lily on the right. "It has been my good fortune to study the habits of this species of Grouse, at a period when, in the district in which I resided, few other birds of any kind were more abundant. I allude to the lower parts of the States of Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri...As soon as the snows have melted away...the Grouse, which had congregated during the winter in great flocks, separate into parties of from twenty to fifty or more...Inspired by love, the male birds, before the glimpse of day lightens the horizon, fly swiftly and singly...to meet, to challenge, and to fight the various rivals led by the same impulse to the arena...Imagine them assembled...see them all strutting in the presence of each other, mark their consequential gestures, their looks of disdain, and their angry pride, as they pass each other. Their tails are spread out and inclined forwards, to meet the expanded feathers of their neck, which...lie supported by the globular orange-coloured receptacles of air, from which their singular booming sounds proceed...the fire of their eyes evinces the pugnacious workings of their mind, their notes fill the air around, and at the very first answer from some coy female, the heated blood of the feathered warriors swell every vein, and presently the battle rages...The weaker begin to give way, and one after another seek refuge in the neighbouring bushes...The vanquished and the victors then search for the females, who, believing each to have returned from the field in triumph, receive them with joy" - Audubon. At the time Audubon was writing, the Greater Prairie Chicken had already all but vanished from the eastern states. It was "still abundant on the main western prairies, but this too was to change, mainly because the bird could not adapt to modern agricultural practices. When the native prairie vegetation was eliminated they soon disappeared. Today the remaining populations, much restricted, are carefully managed. An organization in Wisconsin...is dedicated to purchasing, preserving, and managing remaining prairie chicken habitat" - Peterson.

Ferrey Benjamin (1810-1880) was an architect of the Gothic-Revival (Neo-Gothic). He began his architectural activities in London, Bloomsbury, 1834, date of this edition, demonstrating his mastery of Gothic architecture. He was recognized for his early talent for drawing. His career was a success and honors. Benjamin was born at Christ Church, and his father was mayor, we can imagine that the building deeply influenced his vision of architecture. Im zweiten Blatt finden sich nun nicht nur Akademieschüler: Die erste Reihe beginnt links mit zwei Figuren,die nicht identifiziert sind. Dann folgen als Mitstreiter der Akademie der Architekt Friedrich WilhelmLudwig (geboren 1828) und die Maler Karl Freiberger (1831-1855) und Leopold Bode (1831-1906). Die nächste Figur ist rückseitig als E. Hallenstein identifiziert, der zumindest als Künstler bei Jakob Beckernicht erwähnt ist. Dann folgt Carl Hessemer (1853-1944), bei dem es sich um den Sohn des ebenfallsan der Kunstakademie lehrenden Friedrich Maximilian Hessemer handelt. Der letzte Künstler im oberenBunde ist Victor Lorie (1835-1912). Darunter folgen als Porträt links Johann Heinrich Hasselhorst (1825-1904), Ernst Schalck (1827-1865), Philipp Winterwerb (1827-1873), Adolf Schreyer (1828-1899) und PeterBecker (1828-1904). Unsere beiden Blätter sind ein sprechendes Zeugnis von Hendschels meisterhaft verkürzter und dafür umsotreffenderer Linienführung und der messerscharfen Charakterisierung seiner Mitmenschen. Ob es sich bei den Darstellungen in der unteren Reihe (besonders des ersten Blattes) um verschlüsselteAttribute zu den Künstlerfreunden handelt, wie teils vermutet wird, muss vorerst ungeklärt bleiben. Diekleine Dame in der Mitte auf dem ersten Blatt ist rückseitig mit "Erlangerin" bezeichnet. Auch bei denanderen Darstellungen dürfte es sich eher um spontane Einfälle handeln, teils aus dem Alltag, teils ausdem Akademieleben. Doch auch hier macht die Fähigkeit Hendschels, Typen mit wenigen Linien treffendzu charakterisieren, staunen. --

Commissioned by the Théâtre Italien in Paris in 1834, I puritani was premièred there on January 24, 1835, just twelve days after the writing of this letter. A fascinating account of the Lahore Sikh court by Alexander Burnes published whilst Ranjit Singh was alive and well this is the true First Edition. Fine leather gilt binding. Books titled - Travels into Bokhara.: Being the Account of a Journey from India to Cabool Tartary and Persia; also Narrative of a Voyage on the Indus from the Sea to Lahore with Presents from the King of Great Britain; performed under the orders of the Supreme Government of India in the Years 1831 1832 and 1833. Sir Alexander Burnes (1805-1841) British traveller explorer and writer was born on 16 May 1805. He joined the Bombay infantry in 1821. Upon his arrival in India he devoted himself to the study of the local languages and was while still an ensign selected for the post of regimental interpreter. In 1829 he was transferred to the political department as assistant to the Political Resident in Cutch. In 1831 he was sent on a complimentary mission to Lahore in charge of English horses including a team of cart horses four mares and a stallion sent by the King of England as presents for Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The real object of Burnes mission was to survey the River Indus and assess the power and resources of the Amirs of Sindh then being threatened by the Maharaja. He submitted to his government a geographical and military memoir on Sindh which formed the basis of Lord William Bentincks Indus navigation scheme. He describes Maharaja Ranjit Singhs habits and government his passion for horses his troops and horse artillery his dancing girls and the Koh-i-Noor diamond. In January 1832 Burnes visited Lahore again to solicit from the Maharaja facilities of travel through the Punjab to Afghanistan Central Asia and Baikh and Bokhara. Burnes (Sir Alexander). A very scarce twenty-volume set comprising the catalogues of the library of Richard Heber, as sold at auction by Sotheby's in the Nineteenth Century. Heber, a book collector and bibliophile, developed this interest from an early age, collecting an extensive classical libary whilst an undergraduate at Brasenose College, Oxford before broadening his tastes to include early English drama, acquiring particularly rare books many subjects. Estimated at around 105,000 volumes in its entirity, the full auction lasted two hundred and sixteen days, and made 60,000, roughly 4. 2 million in today's currency. The works are testament to the enormity and diversityof Heber's collection, as well as to the meticulous organisational skill applied by both his estate and Sotheby's. Comprising volumes I-12 of original 13 volume set with additional duplicates of various volumes. Duplicates as follows:Additional three volumes of volume VIIIAdditional one volume of volumes V, IV, XI, X and IXContains the bookplate of James Taylor esquire. Condition: In paper-covered boards with some crude contemporary rebacking. Externally, the boards are worn, spotted, marked and chipped, and there is significant loss and cracking to the backstrips of several volumes. One volume is missing its front board. Internally, the binding is somewhat tender in places, but largely holding firm, and there is foxing, creasing and spotting throughout, as well as inscriptions to many. Overall: FAIR.

Tips of corners bruised, just a small number of plates with easily tolerable foxing or browning, otherwise AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY, the text and plates unusually clean and entirely fresh, and the very pleasing bindings bright, lustrous, and altogether attractive on the shelf. This is a particularly clean set--in especially attractive and unusual bindings--of the French edition of Thomas Rose's popular views of the Lake District, first published in English in 1832-35. The present edition differs from the English issue only in the language of the descriptive text. As Bicknell notes of this work, "almost every aspect of Lake District scenery was covered, including views from fairly remote spots high in the fells. . . . The engravers showed considerable virtuosity in handling the delicate line possible on a steel plate to achieve splendid tonal effects." Originally published in parts by subscription as a portion of "Fisher's Picturesque Illustrations of Great Britain and Ireland," the present item was then separately issued in three annual volumes (as here). Thomas Allom (1804-72) was an English architect of some importance: he was a founding member of what eventually became the Royal Institute of British Architects, and he designed, with Sir Charles Barry, plans for the House of Parliament. But he was chiefly known as a topographical illustrator. He executed many hundreds of drawings based on his wide travels, and produced a substantial series of travel books for the publisher Fisher between 1828 and 1850. The preliminary matter quotes the titles of various important Arabic works in Arabic letterpress. - The French orientalist Jean-Joseph Marcel (1776-1854) took part in the Expedition to Egypt and was appointed director of the Imprimerie Nationale established in Cairo, and the Imprimerie Impériale in France from 1802 to 1815. He was removed from office after the fall of Napoleon. Arwidsson hade sedan 1827 i samarbete med Leonhard Fredrik Rääf planlagt vad som skulle bli "Svenska fornsånger", men arbetet drog ut på tiden och det dröjde till den 11 maj 1832 innan en prenumerationsanmälan trycktes. I denna uppger Arwidsson att hans arbete ska utgöra "ett slags fortsättning" på Geijers och Afzelius "Svenska folk-visor" och huvudsakligen innehålla L. F. Rääfs och J. Wallmans samlingar, "frukter af långvariga och oförtrutna bemödanden."

Der oben rundbogige Abschluß der Darstellung läßt darauf schließen, daß das Bildmotiv ursprünglich als Wandmalerei ausgeführt werden sollte. Ebers studierte seit 1829/30 an der Düsseldorfer Akademie; zwar sind in den Schülerlisten die Namen seiner Lehrer nicht genannt, doch dokumentierte A. Graf Raczynski, daß Ebers im 1. Halbjahr 1834 zu jenen Schülern zählte, die "unter der unmittelbaren Leitung des Direktors Schadow" arbeiteten (A. Raczynski, Geschichte der neueren deutschen Kunst. 3 Bde. Berlin 1836-41. Bd. I, S. 114). Nach einem dreijährigen Aufenthalt in seiner Heimat gehörte er 1837 der Meisterklasse der Düsseldorfer Akademie an. Von Beginn seiner künstlerischen Tätigkeit an wählte er Motive aus dem Milieu der Schmuggler, Fischer, Schiffer oder Soldaten, die teils dramatisch, teils humoristisch geschildert sind. Weiterhin beschäftigten ihn historische und romantisch-mittelalterliche Themen. In Komposition und Gebärden der Figuren läßt sich der Einfluß von C.F. Lessing (1808-1880) nachweisen. Durch Kontakte zu Düsseldorfer Malerkollegen wurde er in seiner Auffasssung der Genremalerei bestärkt. Ferner schuf er Porträts, Marine- und Landschaftsbilder. 1844 kehrte Ebers in seine Heimatstadt zurück und heiratete 1845 Lessings Schwester Fanny. Nach 1850 wechselte er häufig seinen Wohnort. Er lebte in Gaffron bei Lüben, in Dresden, Görlitz und nach 1869 in Beuthen an der Oder. Seit den 1860er Jahren war er kaum noch künstlerisch tätig, stellte aber doch 1881 und 1883 in Dresden aus.

Appealing 19th century black straight-grain morocco, covers with a gilt filigree and blind-rolled frame, raised bands, spine compartments gilt with curling cornerpieces and lancet tools radiating from a central circle, black morocco label, blind-rolled turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With extra chromolithographed "missal" title page, woodcut tailpiece by John Franklin, and 10 COLOR LITHOGRAPHS mounted on heavy stock, three of these by John Martin (The Temptation, The Sermon on the Mount, and The Remorse of Judas), all lithographs with captioned tissue guards. Front pastedown with armorial bookplate bearing the motto "Soli Possumus Facere Nihil," front free endpaper with animated engraved bookplate of George Oliver Clark, with the added inscription "To 'Nona' and Michele with 'Didi's' love - Jan. 21, 1948." Joints a little rubbed (part of the front joint with thin crack), spine gilt a little muted, corners very slightly worn, but the binding without any serious condition issues and definitely pleasing. Isolated faint spots internally, but the text and plates generally very clean and fresh. This verse retelling of the life of Christ is enhanced with very attractive color lithographs by leading illustrators and presented in a pleasing, appropriately somber binding. Foremost among the illustrators represented is John Martin (1789-1854), who began his career modestly as a provincial painter of coats of arms on the coaches of the nobility and ended up being one of the most popular English artists of the 19th century. He studied under the Italian artist Bonifacio Musso and moved to London with his master in 1806. He first exhibited a painting at the Royal Academy in 1812 (selling it for 50 guineas), and this was followed by a series of other exhibited works, most of them huge canvases showing classical or biblical themes, some of which carried off substantial monetary prizes. Of particular note was his painting of "Belshazzar's Feast," for which he was awarded £200 in 1821. His illustrations for the present work stand out from the other plates by their scope and grandeur: while most of the other artists chose to portray more intimate scenes, the figures in Martin's works are quite small, surrounded by imposing mountains, towers, and sweeping clouds. Humanity is dwarfed by the awe-inspiring divine. In addition to being a painter, Martin was a major mezzotint engraver, and it was as an engraver that he became immensely popular with the public (it was also as an engraver that he earned the largest share of his income). His mezzotint illustrations for American publisher Septimus Prowett's edition of Milton's "Paradise Lost" are perhaps his best, and certainly his best-known, works. The author of the present book, Robert Montgomery (1807-55), was a great admirer of Martin, lauding him as "a second Milton," and he was no doubt extremely pleased to have his work illustrated by such an artist. Montgomery rose from very humble beginnings to become a clergyman in the Church of England and a bestselling author of devotional texts. Although incurring the contempt of critics--one describing the author as "a byword for all that is vacant, vague, and inane"--Montgomery produced religious epics that found an enthusiastic readership among what DNB calls "a large and relatively new class of readers whose tastes and expectations were very different from those of the cultural élite." This work shows up in the marketplace occasionally, but it is almost always found in a restored binding and/or in unpleasant condition.

Noch bemerke ich: daß ich diejenigen Manuscripte, bey welchen das Jahr nicht genau angegeben werden kann, ihrem Decennium nach eingetragen habe, somit alle in die 1760ger Jahre gehörigen in die 176-, und die in die 1770er Jahre gehörigen unter 177-. Auch in die 1780er gehörige kommen noch einige mit 178- bezeichnet vor. Die in der 3ten Colonne bemerkte Zahl befindet sich, einer früheren durch Gleissner vorgenommenen Ordnungseintheilung zufolge, auf den Manuscripten." - J. A. André, a talented pianist and son of the Offenbach music publisher Johann André, "acquired Mozart's manuscript archive for 3150 fl. in the year 1800, after Haydn apparently had pointed out the widow's precarious financial situation and Breitkopf & Härtel had declined a purchase in spite of long consideration [.] Thanks to the efforts of Abbé M. Stadler, Constanze's second husband G. N. v. Nissen was able to prepare a checklist in 1798 which would be published in 1828 as an appendix to his Life of Mozart, but the manuscript of which had been the basis of the negotiations. In 1805 and 1828 André published the most important precursor to the Köchelverzeichnis: 'W. A. Mozarts thematischer Katalog [.] nebst einem erläuternden Vorbericht von A. André'. In 1841 he published a checklist, prepared by his student Heinrich Henkel (1822-99), listing all of Mozart's original manuscripts still in his possession, with the purpose of selling them to the highest bidder. After his death the remaining manuscripts were dispersed among his heirs by lottery [.] His lasting credit must be his care for the works of Mozart, based not only on the considerations of a publisher or on the mere joy of possession, but more specifically on his appreciation for the master's epoch-making significance" (cf. MGG I, 459f.). - Damage to the right edge, some tears reaching into the text.

Plates. Laid on illustrated title page and 49 engraved plates, with an additional 15 bound in at rear. The 15 plates at rear are mostly anonymous, but some are credited to H Shaw. The plate numbers range from 3 to 40.
