        Bibliotheca Heberiana:

36 - London - Sotheby and Son, 1834 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A very scarce twenty-volume set comprising the catalogues of the library of Richard Heber, as sold at auction by Sotheby's in the Nineteenth Century. Heber, a book collector and bibliophile, developed this interest from an early age, collecting an extensive classical libary whilst an undergraduate at Brasenose College, Oxford before broadening his tastes to include early English drama, acquiring particularly rare books many subjects. Estimated at around 105,000 volumes in its entirity, the full auction lasted two hundred and sixteen days, and made 60,000, roughly 4. 2 million in today's currency. The works are testament to the enormity and diversityof Heber's collection, as well as to the meticulous organisational skill applied by both his estate and Sotheby's. Comprising volumes I-12 of original 13 volume set with additional duplicates of various volumes. Duplicates as follows:Additional three volumes of volume VIIIAdditional one volume of volumes V, IV, XI, X and IXContains the bookplate of James Taylor esquire. Condition: In paper-covered boards with some crude contemporary rebacking. Externally, the boards are worn, spotted, marked and chipped, and there is significant loss and cracking to the backstrips of several volumes. One volume is missing its front board. Internally, the binding is somewhat tender in places, but largely holding firm, and there is foxing, creasing and spotting throughout, as well as inscriptions to many. Overall: FAIR.

VUES PITTORESQUES DES COMTÉS DE WESTMORLAND, CUMBERLAND, DURHAM, ET NORTHUMBERLAND

      A. Fisher, R. Fisher, et P. Jackson, London 1834 - Profusely Illustrated with Lake District Views,And in Beautiful, Remarkably Well-Preserved Bindings. 286 x 222 mm (11 1/4 x 8 3/4"). Three volumes. Translated by J. F. Gerard. First Edition in French. VERY PLEASING CONTEMPORARY DARK GREEN HALF MOROCCO OVER LIGHTER GREEN MOIRÉ CLOTH, covers with gilt fillet and blind-rolled lattice border, spines with gilt-tooled raised bands at head and tail, and with two elongated raised panels elegantly gilt in a gothic pattern, three brown morocco labels, marbled endleaves and edges. Engraved title page with vignette in volume I, frontispieces in volumes II and III and 213 steel engravings on 108 plates by Thomas Allom, George Pickering, and others, original tissue guards. Bicknell "The Picturesque Scenery of the Lake District" 112 (English edition). Tips of corners bruised, just a small number of plates with easily tolerable foxing or browning, otherwise AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY, the text and plates unusually clean and entirely fresh, and the very pleasing bindings bright, lustrous, and altogether attractive on the shelf. This is a particularly clean set--in especially attractive and unusual bindings--of the French edition of Thomas Rose's popular views of the Lake District, first published in English in 1832-35. The present edition differs from the English issue only in the language of the descriptive text. As Bicknell notes of this work, "almost every aspect of Lake District scenery was covered, including views from fairly remote spots high in the fells. . . . The engravers showed considerable virtuosity in handling the delicate line possible on a steel plate to achieve splendid tonal effects." Originally published in parts by subscription as a portion of "Fisher's Picturesque Illustrations of Great Britain and Ireland," the present item was then separately issued in three annual volumes (as here). Thomas Allom (1804-72) was an English architect of some importance: he was a founding member of what eventually became the Royal Institute of British Architects, and he designed, with Sir Charles Barry, plans for the House of Parliament. But he was chiefly known as a topographical illustrator. He executed many hundreds of drawings based on his wide travels, and produced a substantial series of travel books for the publisher Fisher between 1828 and 1850. Our set is uncommonly desirable because of its condition and its distinctive appearance, with design and decoration reminiscent of so-called "cathedral" bindings. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

I-III. Sthlm, P. A. Norstedt & söner, 1834-42. 8:o. XXIII,(1 blank),424,(32) + XVI,482,(48) + XXVI,562 s.

Vergleichsliteratur: Boetticher Bd. I, Tl. 1, S. 264, Nr. 6; Lexikon der Düsseldorfer Malerschule 1819-1918. München, Bruckmann, 1997, Bd. I, S. 307/308, Abb. 356.. 3 Bde. Berlin 1836-41. Bd. I, S. 114).

THE SACRED ANNUAL: BEING THE MESSIAH, A POEM

London: John Turrill, 1834. Fourth Edition n. Hardcover. 191 x 121 mm (7 1/2 x 4 3/4"). xi, [i] pp., [2] leaves, 300 pp. Fourth Edition. Appealing 19th century black straight-grain morocco, covers with a gilt filigree and blind-rolled frame, raised bands, spine compartments gilt with curling cornerpieces and lancet tools radiating from a central circle, black morocco label, blind-rolled turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With extra chromolithographed "missal" title page, woodcut tailpiece by John Franklin, and 10 COLOR LITHOGRAPHS mounted on heavy stock, three of these by John Martin (The Temptation, The Sermon on the Mount, and The Remorse of Judas), all lithographs with captioned tissue guards. Front pastedown with armorial bookplate bearing the motto "Soli Possumus Facere Nihil," front free endpaper with animated engraved bookplate of George Oliver Clark, with the added inscription "To 'Nona' and Michele with 'Didi's' love - Jan. 21, 1948." Joints a little rubbed (part of the front joint with thin crack), spine gilt a little muted, corners very slightly worn, but the binding without any serious condition issues and definitely pleasing. Isolated faint spots internally, but the text and plates generally very clean and fresh. This verse retelling of the life of Christ is enhanced with very attractive color lithographs by leading illustrators and presented in a pleasing, appropriately somber binding. Foremost among the illustrators represented is John Martin (1789-1854), who began his career modestly as a provincial painter of coats of arms on the coaches of the nobility and ended up being one of the most popular English artists of the 19th century. He studied under the Italian artist Bonifacio Musso and moved to London with his master in 1806. He first exhibited a painting at the Royal Academy in 1812 (selling it for 50 guineas), and this was followed by a series of other exhibited works, most of them huge canvases showing classical or biblical themes, some of which carried off substantial monetary prizes. Of particular note was his painting of "Belshazzar's Feast," for which he was awarded £200 in 1821. His illustrations for the present work stand out from the other plates by their scope and grandeur: while most of the other artists chose to portray more intimate scenes, the figures in Martin's works are quite small, surrounded by imposing mountains, towers, and sweeping clouds. Humanity is dwarfed by the awe-inspiring divine. In addition to being a painter, Martin was a major mezzotint engraver, and it was as an engraver that he became immensely popular with the public (it was also as an engraver that he earned the largest share of his income). His mezzotint illustrations for American publisher Septimus Prowett's edition of Milton's "Paradise Lost" are perhaps his best, and certainly his best-known, works. The author of the present book, Robert Montgomery (1807-55), was a great admirer of Martin, lauding him as "a second Milton," and he was no doubt extremely pleased to have his work illustrated by such an artist. Montgomery rose from very humble beginnings to become a clergyman in the Church of England and a bestselling author of devotional texts. Although incurring the contempt of critics--one describing the author as "a byword for all that is vacant, vague, and inane"--Montgomery produced religious epics that found an enthusiastic readership among what DNB calls "a large and relatively new class of readers whose tastes and expectations were very different from those of the cultural élite." This work shows up in the marketplace occasionally, but it is almost always found in a restored binding and/or in unpleasant condition.

        Allgemeine Bemerkungen". Autograph manuscript signed.

Offenbach, 3. II. 1834. - 4to. 1 p. Preface to his list of Mozart's musical manuscripts: "Die hierin thematisch verzeichneten Manuscripte von W. A. Mozart, geb. - J. A. André, a talented pianist and son of the Offenbach music publisher Johann André, "acquired Mozart's manuscript archive for 3150 fl. in the year 1800, after Haydn apparently had pointed out the widow's precarious financial situation and Breitkopf & Härtel had declined a purchase in spite of long consideration [.] Thanks to the efforts of Abbé M. Stadler, Constanze's second husband G. N. v. Nissen was able to prepare a checklist in 1798 which would be published in 1828 as an appendix to his Life of Mozart, but the manuscript of which had been the basis of the negotiations. In 1805 and 1828 André published the most important precursor to the Köchelverzeichnis: 'W. A. Mozarts thematischer Katalog [.] nebst einem erläuternden Vorbericht von A. André'. In 1841 he published a checklist, prepared by his student Heinrich Henkel (1822-99), listing all of Mozart's original manuscripts still in his possession, with the purpose of selling them to the highest bidder. After his death the remaining manuscripts were dispersed among his heirs by lottery [.] His lasting credit must be his care for the works of Mozart, based not only on the considerations of a publisher or on the mere joy of possession, but more specifically on his appreciation for the master's epoch-making significance" (cf. MGG I, 459f.). - Damage to the right edge, some tears reaching into the text.

Memoir of a Proposed New System of Permanent Fortification.

London: James Cochrane and Co., 1834 - Quarto (269 × 217 mm) Contemporary half russia, marbled boards and endpapers. Somewhat rubbed, corners through, neatly rebacked in matching sheep, EX-King's Inns Dublin Library, their stamps verso of the title page and last plate, light browning throughout, the plates, which are on very heavy paper-stock, are foxed and spotted, two with archival tissue repairs, remains about very good. 6 folding plates lithographed by Hullmandel, half-title bound in. First edition, uncommon, just six locations on Copac, OCLC adds another half dozen. Bordwine, described on the title page as "Professor of Fortification at the Honourable East India Company's Military Seminary, Addiscombe; late of the Quarter-Master-General's Staff, etc.", had served with the 88th Regiment "under General Whitlock [sic.], but was deprived of his commission (a majority) in consequence of his having issued a pamphlet in which he criticized that general's conduct" (ODNB), which means that he almost certainly was on the ill-fated Buenos Aires Expedition of 1806. In 1809 he was made assistant professor of fortification at Addiscombe, becoming professor in 1811: "In 1803 Bordwine [had been] appointed an assistant in the quartermaster-general's department, and attached to the staff of the Western District. A French invasion was expected, and Bordwine drew up a sketch of a new circular system of fortification for the defence of the country. He continued the work at intervals, and at last in 1809 published the Sketch and Brief Description of a New System of Fortification, which apparently attracted very little attention at the time. He was, however, prompted by friends to take the subject up again in 1830, resulting in the large Memoir of a Proposed New System of Permanent Fortification (1834). He retired from Addiscombe on account of ill health on 4 February 1835, and died at Croydon on 21 February 1835". [Attributes: First Edition]

1834. DuPonceau's Essay on the Constitution, This Copy from the Library of a Notable South Carolina Politician Du Ponceau, Peter S. [1760-1844]. A Brief View of the Constitution of the United States, Addressed to the Law Academy of Philadelphia, Published by and for the Academy. Philadelphia: E.G. Dorsey, 1834. xxiv, 106, [1] pp. 12mo. (7-1/4" x 4-1/2"). Contemporary cloth, printed paper title panel to front board, early hand-lettered title to spine. Moderate rubbing with some wear to spine ends and corners, some scuffing to corners of title panel few minor inkstains to boards. Light toning to text, faint dampspotting in places. Small early owner signature of William Drayton to head of title page, interior otherwise clean. A nice copy of a scarce title with an interesting association. * First edition. Du Ponceau [1760-1844] is an important figure in the early history of American Law and letters. Aide-de-camp to Baron von Steuben during the American Revolution, he founded the Law Academy of Philadelphia, was the President of the American Philosophical Society and was a much-consulted expert on international relations and linguistics. Brief View discusses the history of the Continental Congress and Articles of Confederation, examines the powers granted to the three branches of government and reviews topics such as commerce, finance, foreign relations, the admission new states and the relationship between the Constitution and the common law. The appendix prints the texts of the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, Constitution, and Washington's Farewell Address. A Spanish-language edition intended for Cuba and Puerto Rico was published in 1848, a French edition in 1837. Drayton [1776-1846] held a variety of political posts in South Carolina and was elected to Congress as a Democrat in 1824. He supported slavery, but he was a firm opponent of nullification, despite its wide support in South Carolina. After leaving Congress in 1833 he moved to Philadelphia and served for a time as President of the Bank of the United States. Bauer, Commentaries on the Constitution 75.

Ausfransungen.

Narrative of the Capture and Providential Escape of Misses Frances and Almira Hall with the Interesting Narrative of the Captivity and Sufferings of Philip Brigdon

Fair. 1834. Third Printing. Softcover. In 1832, settler William Davis built a dam across Indian Creek to power his mill near present-day Earlville and Sheridan, Illinois, which infuriated the local Potawatami as the fish they relied on could no longer swim upstream. Eventually, tensions resulted in the conflict known as the "Indian Creek Massacre," in which many of the Anglo settlers were killed and two young women were kidnapped. They were later released upon negotation with the Ho-Chunk (Winnebago). This conflict was used in justification of the Black Hawk War. Also with the narrative of Philip Brigdon, and mentions of the attack on the Naper settlement. Pamphlet has two full page woodcuts. Inscription on front wrap reads: "The Compliments of the Executive Committee to Prof. S. C. Hall."         Autograph letter signed ("John Franklin").

[London], 31. VII. 1834.. 4to. 3 pp.. Fine, long letter by the great explorer (who would famously perish in his attempt to chart the Northwest Passage) to G. W. Crowe, the English consul at Patras, about the war in Greece and Kolokotronis's trial for treason: "I have within these few days received very gratifying letters from my wife though of late as late as 5th May she was preparing to avail herself of the first convenient conveyance to Greece [...] I have written fully to my wife in the letter committed to your kind care which I shall be obliged by your keeping for her if she be not with you or sending to her if she be in Greece, and I will write if possible another shorter one which I will thank you to send to the care of Mr. Wilkinson [British Consul] at Syra in case she should be still at that Island. [...] I have now but little time or inclination to enter into the busy & changeable field of our Home Politicks, as far as I can gather the present Cabinet will be allowed to carry the half measures which they have proposed for the security of Ireland. Their continuance in office does not appear to be grounded on any very firm basis, and it is generally admitted they have lost a good head by the retirement of Lord Grey. The result of the trial of Colocotroni & Calliopoli is disgraceful to any mind conversant with British justice. Allowing the evidence to have been defective and the Judges to have been divided in opinion could any conscience reconcile the judgment of death upon them. The King has done wisely in commuting their punishment and I trust that one of the first acts of his assuming the Government will be the granting them pardon. As for de Wrede if he can be proved guilty & sent to the Galleys he will have richly deserved it. I am glad the other conspirators have been set free [...]. I trust the Bavarian troops have been taught circumspection & the danger of treating an enemy too lightly by the transactions in Maina [...] My books I hear arrived safe but cannot as yet be presented while the King remains at Argos [...]". - Franklin and his crew left Greece in December 1833, and on his return to England was made a Knight Commander of the Guelphic order of Hanover. Franklin's wife was the accomplished traveler Lady Jane Franklin (1792-1875), whom he married in 1828. After the long absences necessitated by John's service in the Mediterranean, she accompanied him to Tasmania and became a popular philanthropist, activist and explorer. Our letter discusses Lady Franklin's quarantine in the lazaretto, or quarantine station, on the Aegean island of Syra (or Syros), one of the locations travelers between the Near East and Europe were forced to wait out a quarantine period as outbreaks of the plague were still prevalent. "The danger of treating an enemy too lightly by the transactions in Maina," undoubtedly refers to the peninsula of Maina, which fought valiantly during the war of independence but violently insisted on retaining local control after the war. This struggle culminated in the assassination of the Greek head of state Ioannis Kapodistrias in 1831 after he ordered the imprisonment of the "bey" or chieftain of Maina. - A fascinating letter detailing the political situation in Greece and England as well as the nature of travel in the 1830s. Folded and with some very minor paper loss resulting from the wax seal tear and affecting a few words. Some minor paper restoration is evident on the address leaf. Overall in very good condition.
