Hart and others, printed by Graf & Soret (comprising: 2 plates of mammals, 2 plates of birds, 2 plates of insects, and 90 botanical plates), contemporary green half morocco gilt over green cloth boards, top edge gilt, a fine tall copy. First edition of this "pioneering ecological study" (Rix) on the trees, shrubs and flowers of the Himalayan region of the Indian sub-continent, illustrated with delightful images after Vishnupersaud: the greatest Indian botanical artist of his time. The majority of the plates are after Vishnupersaud (or Vishnu Prasad), "the most talented of the native Indian [botanical] artists" (Blunt). He was employed by many of the most important plant collectors and botanists of the time, including Nathaniel Wallich and Robert Wight, and unfortunately, he remains one of only a handful of early 19th-century Indian botanical artists whose names are known - this in itself is an indication of the high esteem in which his work was held by western botanists at the time. Beaumont, William.
1833. Plattsburgh [NY]: F.P. Allen, 1833. 4to (218 x 135 mm), 280 pp., three wood-engraved figures in text. Original tan paper-covered boards, linen backstrip, printed paper label, quarter brown morocco slipcase, a very good copy of a fragile book. § First edition, first issue, of what has been termed the greatest single contribution to the knowledge of gastric digestion. Association copy inscribed by Willard Parker “the first American to operate for appendicitis" (G-M 3564). Beaumont was an army surgeon at Fort Mackinac, Michigan when he first attended Alexis St. Martin, a French Canadian woodsman who had suffered an accidental gunshot wound to the stomach. Against all probability Beaumont saved his life and, as the hole healed, used the opportunity to study the physiological process of digestion by maintaining access to St. Martin's stomach using a specially constructed skin flap. William Osler was fascinated by the case and, when St. Martin died at the age of 78, tried unsuccessfully to acquire his stomach for the Army Medical Museum; he later wrote: "To the medical bibliographer there are few more treasured Americana than the brown-backed, poorly printed octavo volume of 280 pages with the imprint Plattsburgh, Printed by F.P. Allen, 1833". The first edition is generally believed to have been 1000 copies. The only book to appear in three Grolier One Hundreds (American #38, Science #10, Medicine #61). Norman 152. Heralds of Science 130. Howes B291 ("most important American contribution to medical science"). [Attributes: First Edition]

On his personal stationery addressed to F.H. Farrington, Esq. in Brandon, Vt. The letter in parts: "When I sent you the check I had made up my mind to be done with the attempt to get a pair of horses in Vermont, as it seemed to involve so much delay, and so much that was unsatisfactory. I have described to you pretty fully what sort of team I want. I solicited Senator Proctor's aid to get me a pair of horses in Vermont because I have a high opinion of the Morgan stock as roadsters. From what he said to me of you I felt I could trust your judgment and your integrity in the matter, and I must confide almost wholly in you to make the selection. Now I have concluded to say again to you, that if you can, right away, get me such a pair of horses for about the price mentioned for No. 3, I authorize you to buy them and to arrange to have them shipped to me. Please dispose of this matter with some promptness, as, if I do not get a team from Vermont, I must look about here. Mailing folds, minor stain, else fine condition. Franklin, Sir John]
1833. Letter written on thick off-white paper, measuring 230mm x 185mm. Letter composed in black ink on recto side and docketed on verso. Two folds running vertically which are more apparent on the verso; two very small closed tears starting at the folds at the bottom edge with neither affecting the text. Very light toning running down the middle panel on the verso side. The content of the letter is quite legible and neat and an overall very presentable copy of a letter written and signed by Sir John Franklin. Sir John Franklin was a British Royal Navy officer and explorer of the Arctic who disappeared while on his last expedition, attempting to chart and navigate the Northwest Passage in the North American Arctic in 1845. The icebound ships were abandoned and the entire crew died of starvation, hypothermia, tuberculosis, lead poisoning, and scurvy. This letter was written in 1833, long before his final voyage to the arctic, and was written to William Henry Fitton, an Irish physician and amateur geologist who was also present of the Geological Society and opened his home up as a meeting place for other scientific workers. This letter is a candid acceptance of an invitation that had been extended by Fitton at an earlier date, with the caveat that Franklin might have to later cancel due to his ill brother, James-- James ended up dying in 1834. 1833. Religious Liberty and the Tyranny of the Mississippi Presbytery [Trial]. Clapp, Theodore [1792-1866], Defendant. [Channing, William Ellery (1780-1842)]. A Report of the Trial of the Rev. Theodore Clapp, Before the Mississippi Presbytery, At Their Sessions in May and December, 1832. New Orleans: Printed and Published by Hotchkiss & Co., 1833. xiv, 374 pp. Octavo (9-1/4" x 5-1/4"). Contemporary quarter cloth over plain boards, printed paper title label to spine. Light soiling and a few minor stains to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities with some wear to spine ends and corners, which are bumped, chipping to spine label. Some toning to text, occasional light foxing, brief early annotations in pencil to a few leaves. Ex-library. Location label to foot of spine, bookplate to front pastedown, small embossed stamp to title page. A nice copy of a scarce trial. * Only edition. Clapp paid a heavy price for his gradual rejection of Calvinist views and embrace of Unitarian principles. He spent seven stormy years at the First Presbyterian Church of New Orleans, affiliated with the Mississippi Presbytery, which finally convicted him of heresy in 1832. This is the record of his trial, preceded by a reprint of a sermon concerning the trial, "on the Subject of Religious Liberty," by William Ellery Channing, the foremost Unitarian preacher and theologian of the early nineteenth century. It warns of the evils of religion when it turns into "tyranny," as exemplified by the Mississippi Presbytery. Indeed, says the introduction, "no Presbytery in the United States ever before had the m … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: R. J. Kennett, 1833. Small 8vo (160 x 100 mm), pp. viii, 261, [1]; occasional pencil lines in the margins; contemporary tan half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments with raised bands and contrasting label, marbled edges; corners scuffed, joints a little worn, some scratches to the leather at the head of the lower board; armorial bookplate of Henry Jeffreys Bushby and book label of Percival F. Hinton. First English edition (first published in Boston in 1825). A narrative poem based on the story of Sara in the apocryphal Book of Tobit, by the Massachusettsan poet Maria Gowen Brooks (1794-1845). It was during a visit to her brother's Cuban coffee plantation that the recently widowed Gowen-Brooks composed the first canto of Zóphiël, which was published in 1825. In her Preface, Gowen-Brooks explains that she 'endeavoured to adhere entirely to the belief (once prevalent among the fathers of the Greek and Roman churches), which supposes that the oracles of antiquity were delivered by dæmons or fallen angels, who wandered about the earth'. Zóphiël is one such, a complex protagonist who is likened to both Apollo and Lucifer in his pursuit of the virtuous Hebrew maiden Egla. This edition has a dedicatory poem to Robert Southey, with whom Gowen-Brooks began a correspondence in 1826, and with whom she lodged for several weeks in 1831 at his home in Keswick. Southey championed Gowen-Brooks, and undertook to supervise the publication of this edition upon her return to the US. He wrote to Caroline Bowles, 'I do not know of any poet whose diction is so naturally go … [Click Below for Full Description]

Very good. ¶ Charles Wells was described in New York City Directories as a bookbinder until at least 1832; thereafter he was listed as a bookseller; in 1838 he appears in the Directories as a publisher, and then in 1844 his trade is simply described as "books." There is a good possibility that the present binding came from his shop. Wells may have been the chief importer and user of English-made dies. SELBY, JOHN PRIDEAUX
[Edinburgh], 1833. Elephant folio. 24.5 x 20 inches Excellent condition Hand-Coloured plate from 'Illustrations of British Ornithology' published in nineteen parts between 1821 - 1833. 222 plates, etched by Selby, were produced based on specimens and reproduced in life-size illustrations. In 1826 Selby worked with Audubon in Edinburgh who was producing 'Birds of America' during the same period of time, and his prints were the largest of the period until the publication of Audubon's classic work. 'Selby's bird figures were the most accurate delineations of British birds to that date, and the liveliest. After so many books with small, stiff bird portraits, this new atlas with its life-size figures and more relaxed drawing was a great achievement in the long history of bird illustration.' (C. Jackson 'Bird Etchings' p122) NATURAL HISTORY BIRDS NATURAL HISTORY BM(NH) IV, p. 1896; cf. Fine Bird Books (1990) p.141; Mullens & Swann p. 519; Nissen IVB 853; cf. Wood pp. 561-562; cf.
