AUSTEN, Jane].
London Richard Bentley, 1833. First Bentley edition, the fourth published edition; small 8vo; engraved frontispiece, engraved half-title with vignette, peripheral light spotting to edges of first two and last two leaves, otherwise near-fine; late nineteenth century full calf, double fillet panel, maroon and chestnut lettering pieces to spine, other panels gilt tooled, cockerel endpapers and matching edges, 'Downs' bookplate to upper board, some wear commensurate with age, chip to upper left of spine, hinges split but strong, upper joint starting but also firm; a lovely, unrestored copy. Following the publication of the third edition in 1817, no further editions were published until 1833 when Bentley published the novels as part of his Standard Novels, of Novels by Miss Jane Austen, in five single volumes until 1879 when a sixth volume was added, reprinting the Memoir of 1871; these were the first single volume editions published and this title is therefore the first Bentley edition and the fourth published edition. Austen was not yet 20 when she drafted the novel, under the title First Impressions, between October 1796 and August 1797 at Steventon. It was declined by return of post by the publisher Cadell, and subsequently underwent major revisions. The title also had to be changed to Pride & Prejudice, as the Minerva Press published a novel entitled First Impressions by Margaret Holford in 1800. Finally, in late 1812, the novel was accepted by Egerton and published in early 1813 in boards, in an edition of probably 1,500 copies (Keynes). The book sold well and was obviousl … [Click Below for Full Description]

(BINDINGS - AMAND). MUSSET, ALFRED DE
Paris: Eug´┐Żne Renduel, 1833. Paris: Eugène Renduel, 1833. FIRST EDITION. This trio of entertainments by French Romantic poet Alfred de Musset is offered here in an unusual and sumptuous binding by Pierre Chevannes, known as Amand. Collected under the title "A Show in an Armchair" we have the drama "La Coupe et les lèvres" ("The Cup and the Lips"), the comedy "À quoi rêvent les jeunes filles" ("What Young Girls Dream of"), and the "Oriental Tale" in verse, "Namouna." Although it was not issued as a set, two further volumes were published under this title in 1834. Alfred de Musset (1810-57) was still in his teens when he began publishing his popular tales, and he found success in poetry, fiction, and drama. He is generally recognized, with Hugo, Vigny, and Lamartine as one of the four great French Romantic writers, although he is perhaps most notorious for his tortured and tortuous love affair with novelist George Sand. The lovely front doublure here features portraits of two protagonists of "The Cup," Frank and Déidamia, one of a day-dreaming young woman, and the title character of "Namouna," all apparently painted on leather and onlaid in four compartments. While this very decorative feature is something like the Cosway binding, it is actually unlike anything we've seen from other binders. It is, however, quite like that on another Amand binding which, like the present example, was executed for French collector Edmond Maas, whose library sale was a major bibliophilic event in 1882. Pierre Chevannes (1830-99) began his binding career as a gilder at Reiss, before opening his … [Click Below for Full Description]

GOETHE, [JOHANN WOLFGANG VON]
Privately printed, London, 1833. 220 x 130 mm. (8 5/8 x 5 1/4"). lxxxvii, [1], 279, [1] pp.Translated and with notes by Abraham Hayward. FIRST EDITION of the First English Prose Translation. Excellent contemporary navy blue straight-grain morocco, covers framed by blind floral roll and gilt fillets, with curling cornerpieces, smooth spine tooled in gilt into geometric compartments, gilt titling, turn-ins with gilt roll, all edges gilt. A Large Paper Copy. Front flyleaf inscribed by the translator to Benjamin Willoughby. Lower corners a bit rubbed, a couple of faint abrasions to covers, but A FINE COPY--the wide-margined text extraordinarily clean, fresh, and bright, and in a scarcely worn, lustrous binding. This is a handsome copy of a highly acclaimed translation of "Faust," in a binding probably commissioned for presentation by the translator. An attorney with an abiding interest in literature, Hayward (1801-84) is described by DNB as "a self-made man of letters." He became interested in German literature while travelling in Germany, where he met associates of Goethe. Wishing to share with his friends the beauty of Goethe's masterpiece retelling the legend of a man who sells his immortal soul to the devil for temporary worldly gratification, he produced this prose translation, but only for private circulation; he was convinced by impressed recipients to publish it for sale. It was a great success, bringing him praise at home and abroad, taking him from the practice of law to a career as a respected critic and translator, and fulfilling his ambition of popularizing German … [Click Below for Full Description]

DANVERS, Frederick Charles.
First edition of an extensive history of the Portuguese in the East by the British Frederick Charles Danvers (1833-1906), consisting of two volumes, the first dealing with the years 1481-1571, the second 1571-1894. Chronologically it narrates the expeditions by different Portuguese explorers (Vasco da Gama, João da Nova, Tristão da Cunha, etc.), the discovery of new sea routes, battles at sea and attacks at harbours or trading posts, trade treaties, namely, as the author himself puts it in his introduction "all the principal events connected with the rise of the Portuguese Nation, and with the development and decline of their Eastern Empire" (p. XXVII). Also included is an extensive account of the campaigns and operations of Afonso de Albuquerque in the Arabian Gulf, which he entered as the first European. Most of the plates (including the frontispieces) are reproductions of older engraved maps, portraits, city views or pictures of ships or sea battles. Slightly browned, but otherwise in very good condition. Bindings rubbed along the extremities and the edges slightly stained, spine discoloured.

[Harvey, William Henry]
Dublin: Richard Davis Webb, 1833. 27,[1]pp. Small octavo. Bound without wrappers in handsome modern three quarter morocco and marbled boards, gilt label. Small spot and slight dust offset in lower gutter and edge of title leaf, otherwise about fine. Enclosed in a cloth clamshell box, with label. First and only edition of this anonymously published poem in 38 stanzas treating the tempestuous nature of mental disorders, contrasted with the relative tranquility of death: "Far more dreadful than the call [/] Of Death, tho' dreadful that may be [/] Is the fiat that fixes a leaden thrall [/] On the mind, and buries all [/] Its hopes beneath a sombre pall! [/] This, this is agony! [/] Surely this is death in life, [/] With sorrow and suffering hourly rife!" There is an early manuscript correction in the final stanza. The former owner of this copy went to considerable lengths to try and pin down authorship, and four small leaves of typed notes are enclosed in the slipcase, recording exchanges with librarians and researchers. The conclusion reached in those notes, and supported by subsequent research by this cataloguer, Prof. E. Charles Nelson, and Gerard Long at the Natl. Library of Ireland is that the author can now be said with certainty to be William Henry Harvey, the Irish botanist. A note in "An Annotated Bibliography of the Irish botanist William Henry Harvey (1811-1866)" by J.A. Parnell and Prof. Charles Nelson in the ARCHIVES OF NATURAL HISTORY, 29:2, 2002, pp. 213-44, makes reference to both a printed and a manuscript copy of a poem of the same title, sold at the sale o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Duff Green
Washington, DC to Bardstown, Kentucky, 1833. This three-page stampless folded letter measures 15.5" x 13". It was signed and dated by Green on the "8th July 1833." It bears a red circular Washington, DC postmark dated and a red "FREE" handstamp. (There was no charge to send letters to congressmen like Wickliffe.) The letter is in nice shape with short (1") slits along two mailing folds. Part of one folded blank panel has been removed, possibly by Green to facilitate its sealing before being mailed. Duff Green had been an influential Missouri politician before he became interested in influencing political outcomes as a journalist. In 1826, he moved to Washington, DC where he purchased The United States Telegraph and used that newspaper to advance Andrew Jackson's career. The Telegraph became Jackson's principal propaganda voice during his presidential campaign, and after he won the election the newspaper continued to be the most important cheerleader for his policies. In turn, Green received patronage payments from Jacksonians amounting to about $50,000 per year, quite a sum at the time. After a schism developed between Jackson and his Vice-President from South Carolina, John C. Calhoun, over both personal issues and State's Rights, Green sided with Calhoun. Jackson, in turn, railed against Green. After Jackson stopped Green's patronage payments, The Telegraph became a virulent anti-Jackson, pro-Calhoun newspaper. Green recognized that due to the factionalized nature of the U.S. political system (Calhoun Democrats, Federalists, Whigs, Anti-Masonics, and National-Republicans) … [Click Below for Full Description]
