Plans de plusieurs châteaux, palais et résidences,Pierre Fontaine 1833,Engravings Plans de plusieurs châteaux, palais et résidences,Pierre Fontaine 1833,Engravings Click images to enlarge Description Ths is a very rare antique book title "Plans de plusieurs châteaux, palais et résidences de souverains de France, d'Italie, d'Espagne et de Russie, A.P.P.P.L.P.D.R.D.R. " I believe it was made by Pierre Fontaine in 1833. I could not find any auctions records for this book so it is pretty rare. It measures approx. 22.5 x 16.5 inches. The first page has condition issues. There is some typical brown spotting to the pages from aging. The book is all complete with 38 engravings in it. The cover and back of the book has come loose from the binding. There is some slight waterstains to the right side of the book pages, pictured. Pierre Fontaine was an architect for the French government and, along with his associate Percier, remodelled and built many of the famous Parisian constructions, first for Napoleon Bonaparte, then for Louis-Philippe until his resignation in 1848. Both monarchs wanted to document the royal domains; the volume Saint-Cloud (second official residence of Bonaparte) was part of that series. Signature Books, 1833. MORMON BOOKS - EARLY & LATER PATRIARCHAL BLESSINGS - TWO VOLUMES. Shipped priority. Vilate Kimball wrote to her husband, Heber C. Kimball, then on a Church mission in England: "Father Smith has died since I last wrote. he ordai[ned] his son Hiram to be a Patriarch, and pronounced great blessing upon all his children before he died." In the LDS Church, patriarchal blessings offer comfort to individuals and foretell possible future accomplishments. The blessings are pronounced in the form of a prayer by an ordained patriarch (an office in the church's lay priesthood). The Bible describes the Old Testament patriarch Jacob (Israel) blessing his twelve sons regarding their futures (see Gen. 49). In LDS procedure, drawing on Old Testament precedent, the patriarch rests his hands upon the individualxs head, eyes shut while speaking without forethought regarding what to say. In most cases, the blessing identifies the recipient's spiritual heritage and lineage as a member of one of the twelve tribes of Israel and thus heir to the blessings Israel bestowed upon his sons. The promises and counsel contained in one's patriarchal blessing--prophetic insight into the individual's life and future--are said to be contingent upon the person's worthiness. A patriarchal blessing is given only once in a person's lifetime. Contained in this volume are 755 blessings from 1833 through 1845 delivered by the church's first oracles, Joseph Smith Sr., Joseph Smith Jr., Hyrum Smith, and William Smith. Prominent in these blessings is the promise that the reciepeints will live to w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wikipedia Entry: "Guerry's first work on what would come to be called moral statistics was a large, one page sheet containing three shaded maps of France, prepared together with the Venetian geographer, Adriano Balbi in 1829. These showed the departments of France, shaded according to crimes against persons, crimes against property, and school instruction. Such statistical maps, now called choropleth maps had just been invented in 1826 by Baron Charles Dupin. Guerry is best known for his Essay on moral statistics of France, presented to the French Academy of Sciences on July 2, 1832 and published in 1833 after it was awarded the Prix Montyon in statistics. His presentation, in tables and thematic maps, showed that rates of crime and suicide remained remarkably stable over time, when broken down by age, sex, region of Franc … [Click Below for Full Description]

1833. The History of the Reformation of the Church of England (Six Volumes, Complete, without Index) Burnet, Gilbert Published by Oxford University Press, Oxford (1833) Full brown calf, spines in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering and borders on two colored labels in two compartments. Date and Oxford at bottom. Gilbert Burnet (1643 - 1715) was a Scottish theologian and historian, and Bishop of Salisbury (Sarum). He was fluent in Dutch, French, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. Burnet was respected as a cleric, a preacher, and an academic, as well as a writer and historian. He was associated with the Whig party. In the mid-1670s, a French translation of Nicholas Sanders' De origine et progressu schismatio Anglicani libri tres (1585) appeared. Sanders attacked the English Reformation as a political act carried on by a corrupt king. Several of Burnet's friends wished him to publish a rebuttal of the work, so in 1679 his first volume of The History of the Reformation of the Church of England was published. This covered the reign of Henry VIII; the second volume (1681) covered the reign of Elizabeth and the Elizabethan Religious Settlement; the third volume (1714) consisted of corrections and additional material. His literary reputation was greatly enhanced by this publication. 1833. Please see notes below for a detailed description. This book is the hardcover edition with marbled boards. The text contains scattered markings which appear to be relegated to notations in the margins. The binding is weak as the hinge is almost fully cracked at page 798. The boards are detached along with the spine panel. The spine panel is leather and is heavily rubbed and chipped. The cover is heavily worn along the edges with the leather corner tips and gutter areas being nearly nonexistent (see photos). The page edges are toned with heavy foxing. The corners are bumped and the tips are rubbed through. Several pages are creased at the corners. Some pages have a small closed tear or chip along the edge. Previous owner's name (signature) and their bookplate are present (Joseph Addison Alexander). A unique copy of the 1833 edition with a binding error (see notes below). In addition, this particular copy contains the signature and bookplate of Joseph Addison Alexander. Joseph was not only the son of Archibald Alexander but was an assistant to, then successor of, Dr. Charles Hodge, at Princeton. Furthermore, he was an ordained Presbyterian minister known for his pulpit eloquence and scholastic brilliance. A note about the binding error: It appears that the 82 pages which include the full title page, publisher's series title/promotional page, table of contents/index, and introduction were mistakenly bound at the center of the book. Size: 9 1/2 X 6 1/2 X 3 1/4 (H X L X W) Pages: 1419 pages plus prelims and addenda (see collation below) Collation: General Title Page [vers … [Click Below for Full Description]

[EULENSTEIN, Charles] Anonymous [John Sayer?]
James J. Welsh, 1833. First Edition. Short biographical sketch of the popular German musician Charles (or Carl/Karl) Eulenstein (1802-1890), whose performances gained him celebrity in Great Britain in the late 1820s and whose preferred instrument the Jews' harp (Eulenstein also played the guitar) is described on p. [1] as both "eminently beautiful" and, in a quotation in a footnote, more dissonant than "the creaking of hinges [or] the mewing of cats." Etymologically, the Jews' Harp is not, in fact, a Jewish musical tradition, but a corruption of "Jaw's Harp," one of the oldest known musical instruments, dating as far back in China as the 4th century B.C. OCLC locates 11 copies as of April, 2015, only 4 outside the United Kingdom (Iowa, Newberry, Texas, and Western U. (Ontario)). Octavo (19.5cm.); original red cloth, printed cream paper cover label; [4],69,[3](ads)pp.; engraved portrait frontispiece. Expertly rebacked to match, original cloth a bit faded along extremities; frontispiece heavily foxed, recent bookseller label to front pastedown, else Very Good and sound. Errata slip bound in rear. With numerous contemporary holograph corrections throughout, most likely made in preparation of the second edition, as many are of a semantic rather than purely factual nature (for example, on p. 12, lines 2 and 3 from the bottom, the text reads: "...figures of [the] poverty-stricken music-professors [of Heilbronn] haunted their imaginations"). A second edition was published by the London firm of C. & H. Senior in 1840, published under the authorship of a John Sayer, and revised by " … [Click Below for Full Description]

OWEN, Robert
1833. Probably the first, certainly an early printing of these lectures, of which the first dated edition was published by Cousins in 1833 (reprinted by him in 1834 and 1838). A conjectural note in NUC places Cousins's undated edition somewhere in the 1820s. See Wyn Thomas, A Bibliography of the works of Robert Owen, 2007. 'In 1817 Owen began to speak the language of the millennium, and to cast himself in the role of a prophet both of a secular apocalypse, ‘the crisis’, and, in his mind's eye, of the ‘new moral world’ or ‘millennial world’ which would succeed it, where laws, commerce, religion, war, and self-interest would disappear. He had already suggested in 1813, but now began loudly to proclaim, closely following Paul's letter to the Corinthians, that charity was the core of all religion, and the highest good any individual could attain' (ODNB). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 8vo [190 x 115mm], 47 pp., original printed yellow wrappers somewhat faded, uniform browning but no stamps or inscriptions, a very good copy bound in later blue boards.
