Zoological Illustrations, or Original Figures and Descriptions of new, rare, or interesting animals, selected chiefly from the classes of Ornithology, Entomology, and Conchology, and arranged on the principles of Cuvier and other modern Zoologists

Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, London 1833 - Six volumes, octavo, 318 handcoloured plates, an excellent set in uniform contemporary green half morocco over marbled boards, all edges gilt. A particularly attractive set of both the first and second series of this beautiful work of natural history; all published, and rare in such fine original condition. The importance of this work to Australian and Pacific natural history cannot be overestimated: several plates feature Australian specimens - particularly birds - figured for the first time, while many of the illustrations are derived from the collections of important figures such as Sir Joseph Banks, Elizabeth Bligh, Allan Cunningham and John Byron. Peculiarly attractive is a plate in the second series, depicting the Jamaican "Two-Toothed Disk Snail", from an original sketch by John Lewin, a friend of the Swainson family.Swainson's friend William Elford Leach, head of zoology at the British Museum, first encouraged him to experiment with lithography so as to make drawings of animals suitable for colouring. Thus began the publication of this, his first major work, in which all of the plates are by the author; Swainson was the first illustrator and naturalist to use lithography in this way, achieving a fresh and admirable style. The work deals with specimens from all around the globe, with many from Java, the East Indies, and the Americas (particularly Brazil, visited by Swainson in 1816). Of great interest are the many plates illustrating specimens from the South Seas. Swainson was particularly good on shells, although he relied on the sometimes poor recording of earlier collectors, and was sometimes not able to be more specific than simply giving their habitat as "South Seas". There are, nonetheless, three illustrations of Australian shells, the "New Holland Mitre", the "Mitra melaniana", and the "Scaphella maculata", the last from the collection of Elizabeth Bligh. Several other South Seas shells are from the collection of Sir Joseph Banks, including the "Mitra vitatta", about which Swainson comments that "this superb shell is figured from a matchless specimen brought home by that illustrious and lamented patron of science, the late Sir J. Banks, from the Pacific Ocean".The work is rich with images of Australian birds, with lovely depictions of the "Azure Kingsfisher", "Red-shouldered Parakeet", "Turcosine Parrakeet", "Blue-fronted Parrakeet", and the "Tabuan, or King Parrakeet" (drawn by Swainson from a live specimen). He includes an image of the "White-collared Honeysucker", with the interesting note that "Lewin's figure is so excellent, that I should not again have represented this bird, had not the plate been prepared previous to the publication of his work". Perhaps the most personal note accompanies his depiction of "Swainson's, or Blue-bellied Lory" (Trichoglossus Swainsoni), where he comments on his "pleasure at seeing our name affixed to this charming bird, and in clearing up its history. As a child we well remember our unwearied delight at seeing its figure in White's Voyage".Several Australian birds are depicted for the first time. This interesting group, which we list here with Swainson's original scientific designations, includes the "Yellow-tufted Honeysucker" (Melliphaga auricomis); "Red-Collared Parakeet" (Psittacus Barabandii), from a skin in the possession of Mr Leadbeater; the "Keel-billed Flycatcher" (Muscipeta carinata), "from a specimen belonging to Mr. Brookes; since which, I have received two others from New Holland"; and the so-called "New Holland variety" of the "White-eyed Warbler" (Sylvia annulosa), described by George Caley. Further, of great significance are the two birds noticed from specimens collected by Allan Cunningham, the famous natural historian and His Majesty's Botanist in New South Wales, who sent the specimens to Swainson: the "Black & White Robin" (Petroica bicolor) and the "Golden-eared Parrakeet" (Leptolophus auricomis). The latter had only recently been pictured in Edward Lear's [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Purchase & shipment of a Phaeton carriage from London, which subsequently initiated the first road works in the Bahamas to accommodate it.

New Providence Island [Nassau], August 1833 - May 1834. Four (4) manuscript signed letters from Mr. (and Mrs.) Sandilands, British Chief Justice, plantation owner, philanthropist and abolitionist, who essentially founded the Fox Hill region, addressed to Mr. Bosanquet, their banker in London, and dealing with the purchase of a mansion and a phaeton carriage which is of historical significance. Together with one (1) small manuscript note to Mr. Sandilands trustees regarding freight and insurance for the carriage shipped to the island in November 1833. 8vo. Double leafs measuring approximately 18 x 22 cm, with integral addresses, red wax seals, and 'Bahamas' mailing stamps. Mr. Sandilands and his wife Mary had arrived in the Bahamas in 1830, only 3 years before these letters were written. Robert Sandilands is best remembered for taking a leading role at the time of abolition by offering, in 1840, small parcels of his 1200 acres of land in the Fox Hill district to freed slaves, for £10 or the equivalent in labour, encouraging them to "work hard, be loyal, and grateful for their boon." His scheme formed a free-slave village settlement, originally called Creek Village. Within it he created a small "village square" centered around an ancient cotton silk tree. In 1849 the recipients of the lots renamed the town Sandilands Village after their benefactor. His first land purchase, 60 acres, part of his estate later to be subdivided into 100 lots, is described in two of the present letters, an investment and vision he began investing into in 1833. [In August 1833, the Abolition of Slavery Act became law. In his final will and testament, Sandilands stated his wish that all of his slaves be freed. In gratitude, most or all took his name as their surname; as former slaves, none of them had surnames.] Of utmost importance in these letters is the purchase of a phaeton carriage with a top for protection from the blazing sun. Eventually, after some hardship and a long wait, a carriage would be shipped to Providence Island from London. And, with a £100 colony grant Mr. Sandilands built a four mile carriage road through his private property, and through Creek Village to the main Eastern road, creating better communication between Nassau and the southern fishing grounds, and also facilitating transport between the Village and the Nassau Market. It is now called Fox Hill Road. The carriage so tenaciously pursued and finally acquired, as described in these letters, was the cornerstone for early roadworks and proper transport in the Fox Hill district. Over and above the purchase of property and a carriage, these letters reveal the couple's financial struggles upon settling in the Bahamas, the length of time it took to deal with colonial matters from overseas, and their determination for success, Fort Montagu, which was built in 1741 and had played an important role in the American War of Independence, is also mentioned. Excerpts from the letters: 5 August 1833. Written by Robert Sandilands: "... I feel assured of your willingness on this account to undertake my commission. I desire above all things to have immediately sent out for Mary a small four wheeled Pony Phaeton with a top - if such a thing can be procurred... will not much exceed the sum of £40... [Mrs. Mary Sandiland adds to the letter as well]" Nassau, New Providence, 15 September 1833. Written by Robert Sandilands: "... I have likely made a purchase of an old mansion... 60 acres of ground about 2 miles from the town of Nassau. I am to pay 1000 dollars for it.... I shall have [this?] to Messrs. Coutt by next [month?]..." 31 March 1834. Written by Robert Sandilands: "There is only time to write you a very few lines by a merchant vessel on the point of sailing for England.... it has come to our knowledge that the vessel by which our Phaeton was shipped (the Jersey) has been lost on the coast of England... Quite the contrary an account of the Phaeton being without a head, a want which under our sultry sun nearly rendered it useless. I am most anxious to have our out as soon as possible..." Postmarked 6 May 1834. Written by Mary Sandilands "I am much concerned at having done anything irregular in the way of drawing money, but Mr. Sandilands told me that the Bill had nothing to do with my account... You have of course by this time received the £50 for him, 20 I trust that I have not overdrawn. I have signed two bills for £30 each, which with the £10 for the carriage... makes 70... Money concerns are the very diable & I really have not one hours enjoyment of life in consequence... the constant demand for ready money and the irregularity of the colonial payments, make some arrears that are due extremely annoying... We are living within our income... ...the purchase Mr. Sandilands has made is decidedly an advantage therefore do not turn a deaf ear... the Montagu House should be sold & part of the money & part of the money be appropriated towards paying for it. There cannot be a worse investment for that money than the present one, the house is I believe unlet and of course getting wore out of repair.... ... the calculation of our years expenses which are £100 within our income, the patience of people out here would be exhausted before a sufficient sum was accumulated to pay them all out of such limited savings... I should have £15 more a year to spend! ... One word about the little carriage - It is now certain that the Jersey is lost. I hope it will not make a very big difference in price. There are at the... all sorts of carriages..." End Excerpts. The recipient of these letters is James Whatman Bosanquet (1804-1877), an English banker, who at the age of 18 entered his father's bank, Bosanquet, Salt, & Co., and who in due course became a partner. Mr. Robert Sandilands and his wife Mary had arrived in the Bahamas in 1830. In the same year, he was appointed to the Executive Council. By the Votes of The Bahamas Assembly 1840, Mr. Sandilands became a judge in the General Court. In 1841, he was appointed Assistant Justice. After emancipation, Judge Sandilands granted portions of his land in Fox Hill to the former slaves in the area so they might use it for farming. The payments for these grants were either made by labour or the profits earned from the sale of vegetables. Mr. Sandilands considered the Africans residing in the village to be a "fine body of industrious and content people... upon whose labour one can always depend... for the wage of one shilling per day". The Africans called the settlement `Sandilands Village' however the name was not officially instituted until 1849. With a £100 colony grant Mr. Sandilands built a four mile carriage road through his private property, leading through Creek Settlement to the main Eastern road, in order to open proper communication between Nassau and the fishing grounds on the south side of the island, and also to facilitate transport between Sandilands Village and the Nassau Market. By 1888 Sandilands Village had six hundred inhabitants and was prospering. In 1845 Sandilands gave a further portion of his land for the establishment of a school for the children of freed slaves. Sandilands Primary school remains today. A Phaeton (also Phaéton) is a form of sporty open carriage popular in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Drawn by one or two horses, a phaeton typically featured a minimal body very lightly sprung atop four extravagantly large wheels.

1833. 8vo. First edition. XV, (1), 328 pp. With lithographic map bound as frontispiece. First edition; flyleaf inscribed by the author to "Mr [...] Regnaudiu".         7 eigenh. Briefe mit U. Berlin, 1833 bis 1854.

1833. Zusammen 6 SS. auf 13 Bll. Gr.-8vo. Freundschaftliche Korrespondenz mit Rebecka Dirichlet (1811-58), der Enkelin Moses Mendelssohns, Tochter von Abraham und Lea Mendelssohn (Bartholdy) und jüngeren Schwester von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy und Fanny Hensel. I: "Ich nehme Sie beim Worte, gnädige Frau! An Hrn. - VI: "[...] Meine Nichte [d. i. Wir kommen also morgen (Montag) [...]" (26. II. 1854).

Lisbon, typographia Rollandiana, 1833.

1833. Small 4to. 8 vols. bound in 7. Original cloth with giltstamped title to appealingly gilt spine. Marbled endpapers. All edges red. An early history of the Portuguese discovery and conquest of India. Large portions are concerned with the exploits of Afonso de Albuquerque and Vasco da Gama, whose journey via Ormuz, Mucat (Mazcate), Qatif (Catifa), Bahrain (Baharê), Khor Fakkan (Orfacão), etc. is comparable in importance only to Columbus's in the west, as it "opened the way for the maritime invasion of the East by Europe" (PMM 42). Da Gama's pioneering sea voyage ranks amongst the greatest historic events of the second millennium and as "one of the defining moments in the history of exploration" (BBC History, online). It is also considered the turning point in the political history of the Arabian Gulf region, followed as it was by a prolonged period of east-west commerce, conquest and conflict. - The Portuguese historian and traveller Fernão Lopez de Castanheda (1500-59) accompanied his father, a royal officer, to Portuguese India and to the Moluccas. He spent the next ten years travelling through Asia. During this period he collected materials for his "Historia", both from personal observation and from the documents and reports of others. The work was first published in 1552-61. - Some occasional browning. Binding somewhat rubbed and bumped at extremeties, with minor worming. Provenance: From the library of Paulo Arantes with his bookplate and ownership (dated 1925) on title page. Howgego I, C67. OCLC 313028250.

The Climate of London, Deduced from Meteorological Observations, made in the Metropolis, and at Various Places Around it. A Second, Much Enlarged and Improved Edition

London Harvey and Darton and others 1833 - 3 volumes, 4to., vol I: v, [3], lxxii, 348 pp, 2 folding diagrams, 5 plates; vol II: [2], 407 pp.; vol III: [2], 383 pp., numerous tables within text, contemporary brown cloth gilt, medallion in blind to covers, volume III unopened, attractive bookplates to each, publisher's cloth, rebacked with original spines laid on, corners bumped, replaced endpapers, internally very bright and crisp. The 'student of clouds' or 'father of meteorology' Luke Howard (1772-1864) published this work of statistics on weather conditions in London in two volumes, in 1818 and 1820, before issuing a much improved second edition in 1833. He was the first to recognise the effect of urban areas on local climates. Howard was by profession an industrial chemist, but his great interest in meteorology led to his studies on clouds, and his devising of the system of Latin cloud names which was adopted internationally and is still in use. Volume 1 begins with an introduction to the work, explaining his intention to make available in one place consistent records of weather events. He argues that for the benefit of 'agriculture and navigation', a systematic approach is required, and he outlines his methods and equipment in some detail. The tables of observations taken at Plaistow, near London, in the years 1806-9 then begin, and are interspersed with notes and a commentary which includes accounts of similar weather phenomena observed elsewhere. Weber). Cambridge, Ma.: Printed for John B. Wyeth, 1833. 12mo. 20th-century three-quarter blue morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Hinges and spine extremities rubbed, corners slightly so. Engraved bookplate on front pastedown. Moderate to heavy foxing throughout. Very good. A famed high spot of Western Americana. This important and rare record is a milestone in the history of the exploration and settlement of the West, being an account of the first overland expedition across America. John B. Wyeth witnessed the events described. He was a member of the group of emigrants led by his cousin, Nathaniel Wyeth. Departing from Cambridge, Massachusetts in March 1832, the party travelled overland via New Orleans and St. Louis to Oregon and the Rockies in search of riches in the fur trade. They succeeded in crossing the Rockies and got to within 400 miles of the Pacific. The inspiration for the venture seems to have been "Hall J. Kelley's pamphlets on the colonization of Oregon....From Kelley's accounts it appears that Nathaniel Wyeth, Dr. Jacob Wyeth, and several other members of the company had originally enrolled in Kelley's emigrating society" (Wagner-Camp). According to Sabin and Wagner-Camp, the narrative was edited and possibly written by Dr. Benjamin Waterhouse. This copy does not include the one-line errata slip that is pasted to the verso of the title-leaf in a few copies. It seems possible that its absence (as in the Streeter, Graff, and Bancroft copies) is an indication of it's being an early issue, before the errors were detected. GRAFF 476. HOWES W717, "c."         Album romantique, vers 1830.

In-8 oblong (146*225mm), 110p environ.

1833. cm. 19,5 x 30. Ogni annata è rilegata in mz, pelle marrone e titoli in oro..
