        Northanger Abbey

Carey & Lea, Philadelphia 1833 - First American Edition. 2 volumes, 12mo. Publisher's original muslin-backed paper-covered boards. About Good. Spines and boards worn, scuffed, soiled, stained, chipped and faded, corners bumped. Paper label of vol. 1 present but illegible, only traces remain of label on vol. 2. Contemporary ink and pencil ownership name and owner's inscription on title of vol 1, and additionally on several pages scattered through text of novel. Vol 1 has foxing and considerable spotting throughout. Vol. 2 has considerable foxing to front and rear pastedowns, more lightly foxed elsewhere. Complete with the preliminary ad leaf in Vol. 1, the biographical notice of the author, and all preliminary and terminal blanks called for by Gilson. 1250 copies printed. An unaccountably scare book, surviving copies of the American Northanger Abbey are far less common than any of Carey & Lea's other 1830s Austen titles [or for that matter the 4-vol 1818 Murray edition of 1750 copies, which appears regularly on offer]. According to Gilson, the last US copy to appear at auction was at Sotheby's in 1915, fetching "the extraordinary sum of one shilling." We have been able to trace only one other complete copy on offer in commerce for almost a century. In his census, Gilson lists only eleven copies known, of which three are rebound, vol. 2 of another lacks its spine and has been cut down, and two copies are ex-circulating libraries.         Massika (study for Tableaux #3 of Travels in the Interior of North America)

St. Louis 1833 - Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Swiss-born Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867) specifically to provide a record of his travels in North America, principally among the Plains Indians. In the company of David Dreidoppel (Prince Maximilian's servant and hunting companion), their travels in North America were to last from 1832 to 1834. Well-armed with information and advice, the party finally left St.Louis, on the most important stage of their travels, aboard the steamer Yellow Stone on April 10 1833.

The geology of the south-east of England. Presentation copy

Longman [etc.], London 1833 - Mantell, Gideon (1790-1852). The geology of the south-east of England. [iii]-xix, 415pp., lacking half-title. Lithographed frontispiece and 5 plates (1 folding), folding colored map, text illustrations. London: Longman, Rees, Orne, Brown, Green & Longman, 1833. 213 x 132 mm. 19th century half calf, marbled boards, all edges gilt, rebacked preserving original spine, light edgewear. Plates somewhat foxed, map backed with linen, otherwise very good. Presentation copy, with Mantell's autograph inscription to Capt. [Proby Thomas] Cautley (1802-71) bound in before the frontispiece: "To Capt. Cautley as a mark of the high respect of the author for his important researches in Paleontology, & in gratitude for Captain Cautley's valuable addition to the Author's Museum. Brighton Feby. 14, 1837."First Edition. Announcing the discovery of Hylaeosaurus, the third dinosaur specimen to be discovered, and the first known specimen of the Ankylosauria. Mantell, a British obstetrician and enthusiastic amateur paleontologist, had discovered the first true dinosaur, the Iguanadon, in 1822 in the British county of Sussex. "In 1832 Mantell discovered the first strongly armored group of dinosaurs. He described this fossil, which he named Hylaeosaurus, in The Geology of the South-east of England. . . . Meanwhile, Buckland in 1824 had described the remains of the large carnivorous dinosaur Megalosaurus from the Jurassic near Oxford. Thus the first three dinosaurs to be known, the Iguanadon, the Megalosaurus, and the Hyaelosaurus, each belonged to a quite distinct group, later called Ornithopoda, Theropoda, and Ankylosauria, respectively" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography).Mantell presented this copy of his Geology of the South-east of England to Proby Thomas Cautley, a British engineer and paleontologist who spent most of his career in India. Cautley was the first to find fossils in the Siwalik range of the Himalayas and, together with Hugh Falconer, he amassed and classified an enormous collection of sub-Himalayan fossils that he later presented to the British Museum. Cautley had evidently contributed a fossil specimen to Mantell's own museum, which he had established in his house in Brighton (the museum took over Mantell's entire residence, and his wife and children were forced to seek housing elsewhere!).         The Geology of the South-East of England.

London: Longman Rees Orme Brown Green & Longman 1833 - First edition, xix, [1 blank], 415, [1]pp., frontispiece, hand-coloured folding map, and 5 lithographed plates (1 folding), illustrations in text, plates somewhat spotted, old library stamp to title & several leaves of text, cont. half calf, marbled boards, neatly rebacked with morocco label. Gideon Mantell (1790-1852) was an English physician and geologist best known for pioneering the scientific study of dinosaurs. After an apprenticeship to a local surgeon in Sussex, Mantell became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1811. He developed an interest in fossils, and in 1822 his discovery of fossil teeth which he later identified as belonging to an iguana-like creature he named Iguanadon spurred research into ancient fossils. This volume contains the results of Mantell's research into the geology and fossil remains of south-eastern England, especially Sussex and Kent. Mantell describes each rock stratum of the region in detail, and includes within each section descriptions of fossil remains found in the formation, arranged by species. Copiously illustrated, this volume remains one of Mantell's best known works and contains fascinating detail concerning the development of geology and palaeontology.         Nouveau traité du jeu des échecs

Au Cafe de la Regence, Paris 1833 - 2 parts bound in one. iv+167 with title chess diagram; 204+[3] with diagrams and errata. Octavo (8 1/4" 5 1/4") bound in marbled boards. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 673) First edition. Louis-Charles Mahe de la Bourdonnais was born into a noble family on Reunion Island, then called Bourbon Island, in the Indian Ocean. He was sent to Paris where he attended the Henry IV College and learned to play chess in 1814. From 1818 onwards he played seven days a week at the Café de la Regence, where he had his own table. In 1821 he defeated Alexandre Deschapelles and John Cochrane and in 1823 he defeated Lewis in London. In 1825 he visited England again and there he married Eliza Waller Gordon. In 1831 he lost the money that he had inherited from his father in a land speculation in Saint-Malo. From then chess was his only source of income. In 1833 he published Nouveau Traite du Jeux des Echecs and in 1834 he played a match against Alexander MacDonnell. The match consisted of six parts and La Bourdonnais. They didn't speak each others language and could only say 'check' to one another. MacDonnell took far more time to make his moves and in between them La Bourdonnais played quick chess against other players to earn some extra money. During the sixth and last part La Bourdonnais was recalled to France on urgent business matters and MacDonnell died before the match could be resumed. In 1836 he became one of the editors of the first chess magazine, La Palamede. In 1838 he suffered a stroke and then from dropsy. Things went downward from then. He had to sell his books, furniture and clothes and in 1840 he returned to London where he was employed at Simpson's Divan. He died in December of that year and George Walker, the organizer of his match against MacDonnell, paid for his burial. Condition: Tape to spine, edges chipped and rubbed, some foxing else a good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

TEN LITHOGRAPHED MILITARY MANUALS, WITH SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIAL, PRINTED AT THE LITHOGRAPHIC PRESS AT THE UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY, BOUND TOGETHER FOR GEN. JOSEPH HOOKER WHILE A CADET AT WEST POINT].

West Point. [nd, ca. -1837]. 1833 - Various paginations. Folio. Contemporary three-quarter sheep and paper boards, gilt morocco label of "J. Hooker" on front board. Rubbed, scuffed, and edgeworn, chipped at spine ends. Ex-lib. with small bookplate on front pastedown. Pencil notes, likely in Hooker's hand. Internally clean, tight, and very good. In a cloth case, leather label. A remarkable contemporary bound volume of ten military and technical manuals, with supplemental material, printed for use by the cadets at West Point at the school's lithographic press. Although a few of these works turn up individually in library catalogues (most notably in the CATALOGUE OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY compiled in 1876, which lists some of the titles collectively and individually), most were issued in very limited numbers solely for the use of cadets at the Military Academy, and consequently all are very rare. The volume in hand thus presents a trove of specimens from one of the most interesting early American lithographic presses. Little is known about the school's lithographic establishment, founded in 1831, but one can surmise that George Aspinwall, whose name appears as lithographer on the final two works in this collection, was hired to meet the school's need for detailed, well illustrated instruction manuals. An article, "Tentative List of Textbooks Used in the United States Military Academy 1802-1902," published in the CENTENNIAL OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY.1802-1902 (GPO, 1904), includes only some of the titles present here, at times listing them under the famed military educator, Capt. D.H. Mahan, and sometimes with later dates of publication, indicating likelihood that these books were reprinted over the years. The technical subject matter covered in these books is fascinating, and illustrative of the increasingly professional nature of military training and of West Point. As Barton Hacker has noted: "Pursuing the art of war could now begin from a solid base, the underlying principles codified as military science to be taught in the classroom." At West Point the 1830s brought a new era in the course of study, based on the experiences of Capt. Mahan in France, which gave rise to the courses of study exemplified in these manuals. Michael Twyman has detailed the operations of the British lithographic press at Chatham and the French military lithographers at Metz. The latter certainly served as the model for Mahan, who introduced similar practices to West Point. Besides their significance for military science, engineering, and architecture, these works are specimens of American lithography, produced at a relatively early date, with much skill and attention to detail. Although all quite rare, they were plainly works of great influence, since they would have been studied by all West Point graduates of the era, many of them men who shaped American history over the coming decades. This volume was owned and compiled by Gen. Joseph Hooker, a skillful military commander and an ambitious officer, who graduated from West Point in 1837. It would seem that he had these manuals bound up while he was at West Point, or perhaps soon after his graduation, and thus preserved copies of the actual textbooks he used as a student. Upon graduation, Hooker served in Florida, the Northeast, and at West Point, until finding his first professional success during the Mexican War. In that conflict "he performed so superbly both as a staff and combat officer that he received three brevet promotions, the final one to lieutenant colonel. No other northern commander of the coming Civil War emerged from the Mexican conflict with a better record or higher reputation than Hooker" (ANB). In the 1840s he was transferred to Sonoma, California, but became disenchanted by military life and resigned in 1853, engaging in ranching and business, dabbling in politics, and incurring a large personal debt. In 1861 he applied to be reinstated to the army, and was appointed brigadier general by Linc

A Catalogue of the Library Collected by Miss Richardson Currer at Eshton Hall, Yorkshire.

Printed for Private Circulation Only by J. Moyes 1833 - Large 8vo, xii,501pp., one of 100 copies, steel-engraved frontispiece showing Eshton Hall and 3 steel-engraved plates of the library and its surroundings, cont. half morocco by J. Mackenzie (bookbinder to the King), upper hinge broken but still holding, spine gilt, marbled paper sides, corners a little bumped, uncut. Frances Mary Richardson Currer (1785-1861) was England's earliest female bibliophile and was described by Dibdin as the "head of all female book collectors in Europe.". Currer inherited the library of her great grandfather, Richard Richardson (1663-1741), botanist and antiquary, and with the additions made to this Currer built up a sizeable collection of 15,000 volumes. The catalogue is arranged in a number of classes, including religion, arts, natural science, topography, literature and history. Most of the books in her library were auctioned at Sotheby's in 1862, realising £6,000. Provenance: With the bookplate of David Bickerseth Magee (1905-1977). Born in Yorkshire, emigrated to America with the intention of taking up farming in California. However, the life of a farmer was not to be, and soon he found himself employed as an assistant to John Howell, noted San Francisco book dealer. In 1923, Magee opened his own book shop in San Francisco, and thus became one of the first in a long line of distinguished book dealers who were trained in the Howell establishment before venturing out on their own.         England and America. A Comparison of the Social and Politcal State of Both Nations

London: Richard Bentley, New Burlington Street, 1833 - Following imprisonment, Wakefield began to study colonial affairs of Australia with an eye towards immigration. Recognizing that the depressed condition of Australian affairs was due to a lack of efficiency and sensible handling he gathered his theories for correcting the problems and first published them in "A Letter from Sydney" (London 1829) under the name Robert Gouger. It was so well done that the author was supposed to be an immigrant. He revised and refined these views for his "New Colonization System" in "England and America" as the chapter the "Art of Colonisation." The theories for his "System" were to abolish free grants of agricultural land, requiring a fixed price which would be kept low enough so that a laborer would be able to purchase land after a few years [this to reduce the number of ex-convicts laborers from receiving land for which they had no use], to regulate immigration and to use tax monies from the rental of grants to bring laborers to the colonies. One of the main results of his publications and efforts was the founding of the National Colonization Society and then the South Australian Association, the latter intended to be based upon Wakefield's theories. He was also a close advisor to the Molesworth Committee. On the appointment of Lord Durham to Canada in 1838, Wakefield became interested in that territory and is credited with having greatly assisted Durham with his famous "Report on the Affairs of British North America." He also acted as an adviser to Sir Charles Theophilus Metcalfe in Canada in the 1840's. In 1837 Wakefield had formed the New Zealand Association and spent most of years following directing the affairs of the association from England while his brother William Hayward Wakefield directed and managed it from New Zealand (AUSTRALIAN COLONIES) First Edition. 2 vols., 8vo. xii, 331, [1]; iv, 341, [1] pp. Contemporary quarter tan calf and marbled boards.         Noticias históricas y descriptivas sobre el gran pais del Chaco y Rio Bermejo

Buenos Aires 1833 - The first edition of this elusive work on the Chaco, very rare with the folding map. 1833. Buenos Aires. Impreso en la Imprenta de Hallet y Cia. In 8vo (195 mm x 132 mm). 1 ff. + v + 421 + 1 ff. + folding map. Slightly later quarter morocco, spine with raised bands and lettered in gilt, edges rubbed, a little worn, still handsome. Browned as always, map detached but present, title with stamp; generally very fresh, a good copy. First edition. Uncommon with the folding map printed by César Bacle, arguably the foremost lithographer active in Buenos Aires at the turn of the 19th century, and shortly after the invention of the lithograph. Arenales was an Argentinian military, engineer and politician; as a military, he acted at the orders of San Martin at the Andes army, and then in the northern frontier and finally at the war with Brazil, probably during the last chapters of his career he obtained the information he would use to write this work. He was also Chief of the topography department of Buenos Aires. The map was drawn by Arenales himself and engraved by Bacle at the Litografía del Estado. Palau, 15911.         Mitchell's Travellers Guide Through the United States: A Map of the Roads, Distances, Steam Boat & Canal Routes, etc

Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, 1833. Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good. Engraved on steel by R. H. Young and D. Haines. Roughly 21-1/2 by 17-1/2 inches. Printed on thin banknote paper and handcolored. Second edition of this pocket map (first published in 1832; this edition bears the copyright date of 1832 and the engraved date, 1833) depicts the United States west to the Mississippi River. Louisiana is shown, but not Texas. With nine insets: the Vicinity of Philadelphia, Washington, Charleston, Boston, New York, Cincinnati, Albany, New Orleans, and the Falls of Niagara. Canals and early railroads are shown. The map folds into original tooled and gilt covers. Facing the map is the folding index sheet. The folding index sheet is quite uncommon; later editions, some still bearing 1830s dates, were issued with booklets instead. Second edition. Map with one minor split at a fold; index sheet near fine. Folding case very good. Much better than usually found.

        Mansfield Park

London: Richard Bentley, 1833 A good copy of the first single volume edition of Mansfield Park as published with the original Bentley Standard Novels series title page as well as the book title page. Classed as 'good' because the paper quality (as is common with the Standard Novels) is not high and there is some brown toning to page edges and occasional spotting/marking. There is also some old light ink lines at the top of page 101. Otherwise the contents are clean and the book has been partly rebound to provide a new leather spine with gilt decorated compartments and titles, and new corners. The original marbled boards have been reused. Contents: new endpapers; title page for the Standard Novels series; frontispiece by Pickering and Greatbatch with tissue guard; vignette title page; volume title page; contents (laid out as 3 books); 4 page publisher's catalogue at the rear. A very nice copy.
