The Golden Jackal "Chacal de Moreé. Canis aureuc. var moreotica.

Natural History: Paris et Strasbourg, F.G. Levrault 1832-6. Scarce original hand coloured lithograph of the Golden Jackal from Bory de Saint- Vincent's" Expédition scientifique de Morée, entreprise et publiée par ordre du gouvernement français. Travaux de la section des sciences physiques.." The Golden Jackal was first described by French naturalist Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire during the Morea expedition. Although earlier travel narratives had mentioned its presence, these were not considered trustworthy. Moreover, the species seen and described by the French was endemic to the region. Bory de Saint-Vincent brought back pelts and a skull. The image drawn by J.G Prêtre shows the Jackal above a diagram of it's skull . Generally bright and clean; small spot to upper edge. Jean Baptiste Bory de Saint-Vincent (1778 – 1846)was a French naturalist. He was sent as naturalist with Captain Nicolas Baudin's expedition to Australia in 1798, but left the vessel at Mauritius, and spent two years in exploring Réunion and other islands in the Indian Ocean. Joining the army on his return, he was present at the battle of Ulm and battle of Austerlitz, and in 1808 went to Spain with Marshal Soult. His attachment to the Napoleonic dynasty and dislike to the Bourbons were shown in various ways during 1815, and his name was consequently placed on the list of the proscribed; after several years of exile, he was allowed to return quietly to Paris in 1820. In 1829 he headed a scientific expedition to the Peloponnese, and in 1839 he had charge of the exploration of Algeria. Through all the vicissitudes of his life his literary activity was great, and he did a great deal for the popularization of his favourite science. He was editor of the Dictionnaire classigne d'histoire naturelle, and one of the principal authors of the Annales des sciences physiques; the official work on the Morea was produced under his care, and he contributed frequently to periodical publications. The Morea expedition was the second of the great military-scientific expeditions led by France in the first half of the 19th century. The first, used as a benchmark, had been the Egyptian one, starting in 1798; the last took place in Algeria from 1839. All three took place at the initiative of the French government and were placed under the guidance of a particular ministry (Foreign relations for Egypt, Interior for the Morea and War for Algeria). The great scientific institutions recruited learned men (both civilians and from the military) and specified their missions, but in situ work took place in close co-operation with the army. The members of the scientific expedition landed at Navarino on March 3, 1829, after 21 days at sea. From 1829 to 1831, under the leadership of the naturalist, physical geographer and Colonel Jean-Baptiste-Geneviève-Marcellin Bory de Saint-Vincent (1778-1846) a large collaborative body of artists, antiquarians, botanists, draftsmen, geologists, and epigraphers carried out a geographic survey of the Peloponnesus. The mission was originally divided into three sections, one dealt with the physical sciences, the second with archaeology, and the third with architecture and sculpture. While the documentation of the ancient sites and monuments fell under the direction of the architect and antiquarian Guillaume Abel Blouet (1795-1853), the geographical survey was attached to the physical sciences section under Bory de Saint-Vincent.         Kitab al-maqamat al-Hariri, latine]. Haririus latinus, sive Abu Mohammedis Alcasemi, fil. Alii, fil. Mohammedis, fil. Otmani, Haririi Bazrensis, Haramensis, narrationes consessuum nomine celebratae, omnes et integrae [.].

Hirschberg, Carl Wilhelm Immanuel Krahn, 1832. - Large 4to. 3 parts in one vol. (14) 28 pp. (6), 38 pp. (8), 152, (2) pp. Contemp. half calf, spine rebacked with giltstamped red morocco label. Marbled endpapers. First complete Latin translation (by the Silesian classicist and oriental scholar C. R. S. Peiper, 1798-1879) of the famous "Maqamat" ("Assemblies" or "Sessions") of al-Hariri of Basra (1054-1122): a virtuoso display of Arabic poetry, consisting of fifty anecdotes written in stylized prose which used to be memorized by scholars. "Al-Hariri's Maqamat tie in with the tradition of al-Hamadani. Like he, al-Hariri tells us of the experiences of an educated vagrant, Abu Zaid from Sarug. But his aim is not so much to render vividly this creature of his imagination or even his environment, but rather to invest his accounts with every syntactical and lexical finesse imaginable, and it is these, rather than the content of the narrative, that are to captivate and preoccupy the reader. This is the final flaring of the national Arab spirit: dazzling and, for the moment, pretty as fireworks, but similarly barren, ultimately fizzling out without effect" (GAL I, 276). Hariri's masterpiece had continued to captivate European Arabists since the 17th century (cf. Fück, 148): the first part only was published in Arabic and Latin by Fabricius in 1638, followed by Golius in 1656. Schultens published the first three chapters in Arabic and Latin in 1731, with parts 4 through 6 following in 1740. Caussin de Perceval published the full Arabic text in 1819 (following an 1809-14 Calcutta edition), which was eclipsed by that of Silvestre de Sacy in 1822, while Rückert produced a German version in 1826. - Slight browning throughout due to paper; pages and Assemblies numbered in pencil by a later owner. Rare. Brunet III, 45. Graesse III, 211. OCLC 602600128.

August 1793 in Danzig; † 3. Three vols. Large thick 4to, cont. green calf (joints neatly repaired), single gilt fillet round sides, sides stamped in blind with blind arabesque in center of each cover, spines gilt. Torino: Imprimerie Royale, 1832. First edition, Plana's own set with manuscript notes tipped-in, of the author's most important work. Plana (1781-1864), who studied under Lagrange and was a close friend of Stendhal, was professor of astronomy at the University of Torino and director of the astronomical observatory. "Plana's scientific contributions cover a wide range: mathematical analysis (Eulerian integrals, elliptical functions), mathematical physics (the cooling of the sphere, electrostatic induction), geodesy (the extension of an arc of latitude from Austria to France), and astronomy (particularly the theory of lunar movement)...The results were presented in the three-volume Théorie du mouvement de la lune...The work was not widely read and received criticism that was not always unfounded; but it is of notable scientific and philosophical value, and as such it was well received."-D.S.B., XI, pp. 6-7. The first volume, in particular, has a number of scientific notes and scraps of notes in Plana's hand tipped-in or laid-in. Fine set and rather uncommon. .

Asia for the Elucidation of the Abbe Gaultier's Geographical Games

John Harris, London 1832 - Engraved map, 345 x 432 mm. (image size), original hand-colouring. An attractive children's educational map of Australia, Asia and the east coast of Africa. The map is based on the work of the Abbé Gaultier, an educationalist originally from Piedmont, who had settled in France in 1780 and later fled the revolution to London. Gaultier began publishing his works in the late eighteenth century, and his philosophy of teaching geographical knowledge through games was very influential for game-makers and educational publishers on the continent and in England. He died in 1818 but his Geography continued to be reprinted. In 1815 it was "collated with the author's last Paris edition by Jehoshaphat Aspin", a cartographer. (see Juliana Bayfield, 'Games of Virtue and Learning', The La Trobe Journal, 1997). Aspin seems to have produced the first edition of this work in 1821.Aspin's versions of the maps evidently had some success as an entertainment and teaching aid. They were originally issued as a portfolio or atlas, which included maps of many different parts of the world, some blank, as here, and others with geographical information added. Although bibliographical information is a little sketchy, similar English editions appear to have been published in 1821, 1823, 1829 and 1838. This particular map seems to derive from the "fourth" edition, the Atlas adapted to the Abbe? Gaultier's Geographical Games of 1838, in which some maps were dated as early as 1832.All editions of the full atlas are now very scarce, with the 1838 edition being the only one held in Australia, at the National Library of Australia. The National Library also has a copy of this individual map dated 1823, but otherwise identical to this one. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
