Annales des Mines. Series III-VI. Atlases.

Paris, Ecole de Mines, 1832-1866. Two series in four. Oblong folio (40.5 x 22.0 cm) with 758 (of 759? see below) engraved and lithographed plates and maps, of which 29 are hand-coloured geological maps or profiles. Contemporary uniform red cloth. Gilt titles on the spines and front boards. Marbled endpapers.= Rare atlas belonging to this early French mining journal that started as "Journal des Mines" (1794-1813) and was continued as "Annales des Mines". It includes an early geological map of Los Angeles County (1855), a mining map of California (1862), maps of the volcanoes Mount Vesuvius and Etna, and a fine map of the island of Jersey (1851) with seven colours, etc., etc. Other plates show mining equipment, including locomotives, conveyor belts, and metallurgy devices, including ovens. One plate shows the reconstruction of an exploded boiler, with a map of the debris field, and views of damaged buildings, several others depict eruptions of Mount Vesuvius. In this set, nearly all the plates are not folded, in strong contrast to copies where the plates are included in the text volumes, nearly all folded, and often trimmed. Does not include plate VIII in serie III, volume XX (either not published or never bound in; it is described as "Carte géologique de la Russie d'Europe", and should contain a "coupe géologique du nord au sud"; however, it is also lacking in the only other copy of série 3 vol. 20 that we have seen, and it is absent too in the digitalized copy at http://annales.ensmp.fr/numeros/ANN_1841_S03_20/ANN_1841_S03_20.pdf. The description of this plate in the "Explications des planches" is incomplete, as if the compiler had not seen it either). All other plates present. Corners slightly worn, some very marginal water staining, but generally in very good condition. Cat. BM(NH) [Serial Publications] 1, 83.

New South Wales Calendar and General Post Office Directory, 1833

Stephens & Stokes, Sydney 1832 - Octavo, folding map, engraved title-page with view of the GPO, two folding tables, two folding plates (one hand-coloured), map of Mount Victoria, two views of the Mount Victoria pass by John Carmichael, and 11 engraved advertisements for Sydney merchants. Rare Sydney almanac and directory in very good original state, with its complete suite of engraved plates and maps by three of the most important early Sydney printers and engravers, John Carmichael, William Wilson and William Moffitt. This was only the second year of publication for the New South Wales Calendar, and it features an impressive roll-call of contributors. Of particular note is the folding 'Map of the Town of Sydney 1833', engraved by Wilson from an original plan drawn by Major Thomas Mitchell, then serving as Surveyor-General of the colony. Importantly, Mitchell also contributes a 'Description of Mount Victoria', which details the building of the new pass over the Blue Mountains opened in 1832; Mitchell's report is accompanied by a map and two fine engravings by John Carmichael. Another major contribution is the interesting 'Sketch of the Colony of New South Wales; or, Australia' by the Reverend C. Pleydell N. Wilton, Chaplain of Newcastle.A fascinating inclusion is Phillip Parker King's 'Sailing Directions for the Navigation of the Inner Route, through Torres Strait; with a Description of the north eastern coast of New South Wales, from Breaksea Spit to Cape York' (pp. 19-52). Reprinted from its original appearance as an appendix to his voyage account of 1827, King's detailed reports are included here specifically 'in the hope of their being of use, and of rendering the passage of the inner route to Torres Strait more available to the commercial world', at a time when the treacherous waters of the Great Barrier Reef were playing host to increased shipping traffic.Such almanacs offer a rare opportunity to study the skill of the local engravers and printers, while also providing a detailed picture of life in the colony, whether it is the comprehensive 'Itinerary of Roads throughout New South Wales' (pp. 53-149), lists of the civil and military establishment, information regarding shipping, business and public institutions, or the 'General Post Office Directory' itself. Of great charm are the eleven engraved advertisements for local merchants including the watchmaker Broad, and Edward Fagan of the Wellington Brewery in George Street. 'In New South Wales almanacs and directories were chiefly devoted to government and commercial activities. Views of Sydney, maps and advertisements make up most of the pictorial content? Carmichael and Wilson came to the colony as free men; Moffitt was transported for stealing tea.' (Roger Butler, Printed Images in Colonial Australia 1801-1901, p. 63; for examples of some of the illustrated trade cards see also pp. 64-65). A good copy in old quarter cloth on plain boards preserving an earlier black leather label.

Title page, 266 unnumbered text leaves; and 78 finely hand-coloured lithographed plates, heightened with silver and/or gold, depicting in full colour 223 Mediterranean and southern European complete fish specimens, and, not coloured, many taxonomically important details. Early 20th century half pigskin over grained boards and endpapers. Spine with five raised bands, bordered with gilt lines, and two black morocco labels with gilt title.= The large fish volume of the rare magnum opus by the nephew of the emperor Napoléon, Charles Lucien [Jules Laurent] Bonaparte (1804-1857), or Carolo Luciano Bonaparte. It is the third, last, and most voluminous part of the "Iconografia". The illustrations are very detailed, and often beautifully heightened with silver or gold, reproducing the fish scales in a lively, fresh and natural manner. Taxonomically important details are illustrated in additional uncoloured engravings. The text is very detailed, and provides useful lists of synonymies and other valuable information on distribution, behaviour, etc., etc. All parts of Bonaparte's "Iconografia" are rare. Completely uncut with the widest margins possible. Bookplate of Waldemar Schwalbe on the front pastedown. The plates are slightly smaller than the text leaves, as always in uncut copies. One plate with an old, skilful repair, otherwise a fine, clean and large copy of this rare work. Dean I, p. 148, 1832.1; Mulder Bosgoed, 586; Nissen SFB, 26; Nissen ZBI, 459; Zimmer, pp. 66-67.

English Botany: or, coloured figures of British Plants, with their essential characters, synonyms, and places of growth.

Printed by Richard Taylor for the Proprietor, C. E. Sowerby, London 1832 - A good copy of the short 2nd edition, complete in 7 volumes, with 1,588 partially hand coloured plates by James Sowerby. In contemporary half leather bindings with gilt compartments and title labels to spines, and marbled boards. The history of the 2nd and 3rd editions of English Botany is a particularly complicated one. After the 1st edition was published (1812), C E Sowerby decided to reorganise the work so that it was more systematic. This second edition began appearing in parts in 1832 to form a 7 volume set. The preface in Vol I refers to the edition as the 'second or small edition' - the reduced size probably being a matter of cost. Confusingly Judith Sowerby added a further 5 volumes in 1842 and then called the initial 7 the 3rd edition and the new 5, the second edition. Given that the work was issued in parts, it follows that there are 2nd edition sets with later title pages on some volumes! And, just to confuse further a true 3rd edition was issued around 20 years later. The 2nd edition can be distinguished by the double plate numbering: the plates have their original 1st edition number and the reorganised 2nd edition number. This set is as follows: Vol I: preface, text and index 87pp; 193 plates and 27 bis plates - dated from the preface, title page states 'second edition'. Vol II: 1849 'third edition', text and index 85pp; 185 plates and 20 bis plates. Vol III: 1836 2nd edition; text and index 105pp; list of supplementary plates; 205 plates and 11 bis plates incl 2 folding; page marker present. Vol IV: 1837 2nd edition; text and index 81pp; errata and list of supplementary plates; 166 plates and 22 bis plates [possibly lacking 2 bis]; page marker present. Vol V: 1838 2nd edition; text and index 126pp; list of suppl plates; 236 plates and 12 bis plates; page marker. Vol VI: 1839 2nd edition; text and index 106pp; suppl plate list; 210 plates and 21 bis plates. Vol VII: 1840 2nd edition; text and index 132pp; 2 lists of suppl plates; 239 plates and 41 bis plates. The bindings are sound but with wear to edges and corners, and general scuffing. All volumes have an ownership signature to the fep. Text pages generally clean with very occasional spotting. Plates vary from exceptionally bright and clean to having brown toning and/or some spotting. The bis plates are particularly prone to the browning/spotting, and they have pencil notes to the titles. Some of the bis plates have nibbled edges suggesting that they may have been tipped in later. There is occasional marking where old bookmarks (and a pressed plant) were kept. One plate has a small repaired tear. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Bindings protected by clear Mylar over-wrappers..A Very Good Plus copy. Rare in any condition. With thanks to Katherine Blank for the following, from her publication, British Women and Orientalism in the Early Nineteenth Century: "Mrs. Meer Hassan Ali's book... stood as a benchmark of British knowledge about Islam in South Asia throughout the 19th and 20th centuries... Published in 1832, [the book] countered many negative stereotypes about Islam that had become common in the works of Indologists by putting forth a new perspective gleaned from Ali's decade-long stay in India, where she lived with her husband's family in Lucknow... that belonged to the Shia sect of Islam. Straying from anti-Muslim ideas present in late 18th- and early 19th-century Orientalist literature, [her book] contended that Islam called for the fair treatment of women and was closer to Christianity than most Britons previously thought. After its publication, British scholars and popular writers constantly referred to [her book] due to Ali's detailed descriptions of Muslim beliefs and practices. Ali's positive, first hand experiences with Islam helped to change the perception of Islam in early 19th-century British literature." . First British Edition. Quarter-leather. Very Good Plus. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

      - Paris, J. Tastu, 1832-1834. 8vo (text; 22.9 x 14.2 cm) and folio (atlas; 52.0 x 35.3 cm). lvi, 167, xvi, 376 pp.; title page, plate explanation, one engraved title-vignette and 80 [41, 39] nicely engraved plates of which 12 are printed in sepia colour and four are hand-coloured. Contemporary uniform half red morocco over marbled boards. Spines with five raised, gilt-ornamented bands and gilt title. Marbled endpapers. Speckled edges.= The complete botanical section of the Dumont d'Urville expedition as published in two monographs. It is regarded as the finest work ever published on the flora of New Zealand, and includes a great number of new species. The botanists Pierre Adolphe Lesson (1805-1888) and Achille Richard (1794-1852) jointly wrote the part on the botany of New Zealand, while Richard alone was responsible for the section describing the plants collected during the voyage at other stations, especially at "Tonga-Tabou ou Archipel des Amis". The artists of the fine plates are Delile and Vauthier and the engravers Massard, Legrand, Noiret, Schmelz, Visto and others. The first engravings on algae and a fern are tinted and very decorative. The text has been bound with the earlier (1832) part on New Zealand last. Some light scattered foxing in the text. A small old stamp on the title pages of the text volume. The title page, the list of plates and the first six plates of the atlas affected by a water stain in the right margin, not touching the image, however. Text pages 21-22 with a large, but clean tear (no loss of text). A very good, complete copy. DSB VII, p. 401; Nissen BBI, 555; Stafleu & Cowan, 1556 (under Dumont d'Urville).         Atlas du Voyage au Congo et dans l'Interieur de l'Afrique Equinoxiale

Paris: Chez J. Renouard, 1832. Hardcover. Fair. 20 plates (some of which are partially colored). Lacks original binding. 37cm. Also lacks any interior leaves preceding title-page or following the last plate, and also lacks the folding map which should face the title-page. Edges ragged. Tissue guards still present. Light to moderate foxing on all plates. From the John R. Willis Collection with his bookplate on verso of title-leaf. French text. This uncommon and rather appealing atlas was accompanied by three text volumes describing Douville's journey into Central Africa. Unfortunately it soon became clear that Douville's account was fictional and based on the travels of others rather than on any African explorations by Douville. Disgraced despite mounting a vigorous but ultimately unpersuasive defense of the veracity of his account, Douville went off to explore Brazil where he was reportedly murdered in 1837.

1832. Large 4to. 3 parts in one vol. (14) 28 pp. (6), 38 pp. (8), 152, (2) pp. Contemp. half calf, spine rebacked with giltstamped red morocco label. Marbled endpapers. First complete Latin translation (by the Silesian classicist and oriental scholar C. R. S. Peiper, 1798-1879) of the famous "Maqamat" ("Assemblies" or "Sessions") of al-Hariri of Basra (1054-1122): a virtuoso display of Arabic poetry, consisting of fifty anecdotes written in stylized prose which used to be memorized by scholars. "Al-Hariri's Maqamat tie in with the tradition of al-Hamadani. Like he, al-Hariri tells us of the experiences of an educated vagrant, Abu Zaid from Sarug. But his aim is not so much to render vividly this creature of his imagination or even his environment, but rather to invest his accounts with every syntactical and lexical finesse imaginable, and it is these, rather than the content of the narrative, that are to captivate and preoccupy the reader. This is the final flaring of the national Arab spirit: dazzling and, for the moment, pretty as fireworks, but similarly barren, ultimately fizzling out without effect" (GAL I, 276). Hariri's masterpiece had continued to captivate European Arabists since the 17th century (cf. Fück, 148): the first part only was published in Arabic and Latin by Fabricius in 1638, followed by Golius in 1656. Schultens published the first three chapters in Arabic and Latin in 1731, with parts 4 through 6 following in 1740. Caussin de Perceval published the full Arabic text in 1819 (following an 1809-14 Calcutta edition), which was eclipsed by that of Silvestre de Sacy in 1822, while Rückert produced a German version in 1826. - Slight browning throughout due to paper; pages and Assemblies numbered in pencil by a later owner.         Eigenh. Brief mit U. Rom, 13. VIII. 1832.

1832. 2 SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt mit Siegelresten und Adresse am Gegenblatt verso (Faltbrief). Gr.-4to.
