Robin Hood: a Collection of all the Ancient Poems, Songs, and Ballads, now extant relative to that celebrated English Outlaw. To which are prefixed Historical Anecdotes of his Life

First Edition thus London William Pickering 1832 First Pickering Edition (second edition overall; first published 1795), complete in two volumes. 8vo: viii, [2], [v]-cxxxv, [1],148; vi,261,[1]pp, with numerous woodcut illustrations (each tale with head- and tail-piece) by John and Thomas Bewick. Original brown ribbed cloth, covers decorated in blind with elaborate arabesques; spines ruled in blind and lettered in gilt, pale lemon end papers. Beautifully rebacked with original cloth spines laid down, else a Fine set, bindings firm and gilt bright, pages pristine (and largely unopened) without a trace of foxing, illustrations crisp. Tattersfield 2.543B. Menzies 1704. Lowndes 2098. Not in Roscoe. Fine Originally published by Ritson,"who continued from time to time to make additions to his own copy, from which the present edition has been carefully printed. The original engravings, by the celebrated Bewick, have again been used; and from the improved art of wood-cut-printing, will be found superior in clearness and beauty to the first impression." (from the Advertisement). The editor of this edition, according to Lowndes, was Ritson's nephew, who added in the appendix the Tale of Robin Hood and the Monk, of which Ritson was unaware. Lowndes also concurs that the "woodcuts are better struck off and clearer." Joseph Ritson was an English antiquarian notorious for vicious and blistering criticisms of his literary contemporaries, including Thomas Warton (History of English Poetry) and, most famously, Samuel Johnson (the edition of Shakespeare produced with George Steevens in 1783 particularly irked Ritson). But the work upon which Ritson's fame rests?"his single greatest achievement"? is this exhaustive Robin Hood. "For many years he had attempted to collect all the 'historical or poetical remains' concerning Robin Hood, and his research was so thorough that only a handful of 'remains' of any significance have subsequently been discovered."         Autograph letter signed to Mr. Chauvin presenting a copy of the official account of his voyage.

no place: no date but circa 1832. Single sheet of laid paper, 207 x 260 mm., folded vertically to form a letter, written in a small and neat hand to first page and addressed - but not stamped - to the last, old folds; excellent. A significant letter in which the great Pacific and Antarctic explorer Dumont d'Urville presents the first parts of his official account of his first voyage to the natural historian F.J. Chauvin of Caen, active in botanical studies in the mid-nineteenth century. Chauvin's herbarium is still held at the Université de Caen, and he is remembered by several plants named in his honour. In the letter, Dumont d'Urville sends Chauvin the "first two parts" of his voyage account, in the hope that they will be of interest. It may be that he was sending the first parts of the historical narrative of the voyage, first published in 1830, but given Chauvin's botanical studies, it is probably fair to assume that he was being sent the two parts of the Botanie volume, edited by Lesson & Richard (I. Essai d'une Flore de la Nouvelle Zelande. II. Sertum Astrolabianum, Paris, 1832-4). Only as a postscript to the letter does Dumont d'Urville remember to offer his regards to Chauvin's wife and little girl.Dumont d'Urville had sailed on the Astrolabe (Duperrey's old ship the Coquille, renamed in honour of La Pérouse) from Toulon in April 1826. He was instructed to explore the principal island groups in the South Pacific, completing the work of the Duperrey voyage, on which the commander himself had been a naturalist. Because of his great interest in natural history, huge amounts of scientific data and specimens were collected, described and illustrated in sumptuous folio atlases. The expedition stopped at the Cape of Good Hope, passed through Bass Strait visiting Port Phillip, and arrived at Sydney on 1 December 1828.Extensive visits were made to both Sydney and Parramatta, where Dumont d'Urville visited Samuel Marsden; the expedition sailed for New Zealand in January 1827, explored Tasman Bay, found a pass between an island in Cook Strait and the northern shore of South Island (the island consequently named D'Urville and the strait French Strait) and worked up the coast of North Island, completing the 'most comprehensive exploration of the islands since Cook's death'. They made Tonga in April 1827, explored the Fiji Archipelago, New Britain and New Guinea. In November, after a stop at Amboina, they coasted along the north-west coast of Australia and reached Tasmania. In 1828 they continued to Vanikoro in search of traces of La Pérouse, and stopped at Guam in the Marianas, before returning via the Cape of Good Hope, reaching Marseille on 25 March 1829.

[Ornithology] A history of British birds. by Thomas Bewick

Newcastle printed by Charles Henry Cook, for R. E. Bewick: sold by him, Longman and Co., London; and all booksellers. 1832 8vo: xl,386; xviii,424pp. Collated and complete in two volumes: I. containing the history and description of land birds; II. containing the history and description of water birds. Illustrated throughout with engravings on wood by Thomas Bewick. Uniformly bound in contemporary full polished calf, covers framed in double gilt fillets and leaf roll in blind, spines in five compartments with two black morocco lettering pieces gilt; end papers and edges marbled. Provenance: old book plates on front paste down and front fly leaf of both volumes. A superb set, bindings tight and secure, contents very fresh and bright without a trace of foxing or browning, rich impressions of the numerous woodcuts. Not in Roscoe. OCLC Number: 12197896. Fine According to ODNB, more than 600 distinct woodblocks were engraved for this two-volume work by the time the last of eight editions was published during Bewick's lifetime. "Apart from the excellence of the principal figures, the numerous tailpiece vignettes that enlivened every spare space in the book came in for special notice. . . . [Their] narrative content . . . is often ironic and displays a mordant view of the world and human folly . . . The gritty reality of the lives of the crippled old soldiers, road menders, blind beggars, and rain-soaked packmen who inhabit Bewick's landscapes is at odds with the sentimental view of those who now reproduce his work on pots and tea towels. . . Any comparison of Bewick's work with that of his predecessors makes clear how original it appeared at the time. Not only was there truth in outline and animated posture, but the habitat was beautifully realized."         Mitchell's Travellers Guide through the United States. A Map of the Roads, Distances, Steam Boats & Canal Routes &c.

Philadelphia. S. Augustus Mitchell. 1832. Map, handcolored engraving, 17 x 21 1/2 on sheet 17 1/2 x 21 3/4 inches, folding as issued into gilt decorative black leather covered boards 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches. Cover worn, head of spine chipped, inner hinge split, previous owner's name and date of 1832 plus other pen marking on front pastedown; archivally repaired splits at several map folds, short separations at several fold intersections but overall the map is in very bright, crisp condition. There is no "single separate folded sheet" as described in the David Rumsey record for this map (there is paper residue to the front endpaper and this may have been where the folded sheet was tipped in). This is the first edition of this important map in the settlement of the United States. The map extends west to the Missouri Territory, with Mexico at the lower left corner, where Texas makes its appearance in later issues of the map. There are a total of nine map insets: Vicinity of Cincinnati; Vicinity of Albany; Vicinity of New Orleans; Vicinity of the Falls of Niagara; Vicinity of Boston; Vicinity of New York; Vicinity of Charleston; Vicinity of Baltimore and Washington; Vicinity of Philadelphia. This copy is lacking the printed index which in this edition appeared on a sheet of the same size as the map and was folded into the front cover. Shown are: Turnpike Roads, Principal travelling roads, Common roads, Canals, Rail Roads. A very handsome example of Mitchell's engraved maps, portraying the States on the eve of a rapid transformation.

On the Economy of Machinery and Manufacturers.

London: Charles Knight, 1832. First edition, very rare large paper issue, of Babbage's pioneering work of political economy, "a remarkable performance of a remarkable man" (Schumpeter, p. 541), and "a turning point in economic writing" (ODNB). "The first edition of On the economy of machinery and manufacturers was issued in two versions: a large-paper version, of which a small number were printed for presentation only; and the regular version of which three thousand copies were issued" (OOC). "Babbage undertook the analysis of machinery and manufacturing processes to discover ideas and techniques that could be applied to the construction of his Difference Engine no. 1, which he knew would stretch the available mechanical technology to its limits. Primary themes of the book were the division of labor and the division of mental labor, to which Babbage devoted chapters 19 and 20. His chapter on the division of mental labor was an analysis of the methods used by de Prony in the production of his celebrated mathematical tables. Babbage had seen de Prony's manuscript table in 1819, and around 1820 began planning the Difference Engine no. 1 based on the principles of division of labor. With this goal, Babbage visited factories throughout England, inspecting every machine and every industrial process. Rather than a study limited to engineering and manufacturing techniques, his book turned out to be an analysis of manufacturing processes within their economic context. Written when manufacturing was undergoing rapid development and radical change, the book represents an original contribution to British economics. "On the economy of machinery and manufacturers was also the first book on operations research, discussing topics like the regulation of power, control of raw materials, division of labor, times studies, the advantage of size in manufacturing, inventory control, and duration and replacement of machinery. On pages 166 and 167 Babbage analyzed the production of his book as an example of the cost of each step in a particular production process. The work was Babbage's most complete and professional piece of writing, and the only one of his books that went through four editions in his lifetime" (OOC). "Adam Smith had never really abandoned the belief, reasonable enough in his day, that agriculture was the principal source of British wealth; Ricardo's ideas were focused on corn; Babbage for the first time authoritatively placed the factory in the centre of the stage. The book is at once a hymn to the machine, an analysis of the development of machine-based production in the factory, and a discussion of social relations in industry... "The Economy of manufacturers established Babbage's position as a political economist and its influence is well attested, particularly on John Stuart Mill and Karl Marx. Babbage's pioneering discussion of the effect of technical development on the size of industrial organizations was followed by Mill and the prediction of the continuing increase in the size of factories, often cited as one of Marx's successful economic predictions, in fact derives from Babbage's analysis... Babbage wrote with many talents: a natural philosopher and mechanical engineer, his knowledge of factory and workshop practice was encyclopaedic; he was well-versed in relevant business practice; and he was without rival as a mathematician among contemporary British political economists (Hyman, pp. 103-4). Origins of Cyberspace 42; A. W. Van Sinderen, 'The printed papers of Charles Babbage,' Annals of the History of Computing, Vol. 2, 1980, pp. 169-85, no. 45; A. Hyman, Charles Babbage, Pioneer of the Computer, 1982; J. Schumpeter, History of Economic Analysis, Oxford University Press, New York 1954; For a detailed analysis, see N. Rosenberg, Babbage: Pioneer Economist ( Large 8vo (217 x 135), fine contemporary English calf with raised bands and black spine label (extremeties with some light wear), engraved book plate of the a banker and politician Baron Hambro to front paste down pp. xvi, 320, [2, advertisements], including added engraved title (with some spotting, less than is usual for this book).         Viaje alrededor del mundo hecho en los años 1768, 69, 70 y 71 por el célebre Santiago Cook, Comandante del navío del Rey El Endeavour... Traducido del francés por D. Santiago de Alvarado y de la Peña.

Madrid: Imprenta de Don Tomás Jordan, 1832. Six volumes, duodecimo, 6 engraved plates (one in each volume), original blue printed wrappers preserved, early owner's name on the title-pages, old stamps from Barcelona library, bookplates of José Gallart Folch; a charming set in contemporary Spanish quarter calf, gilt. Very uncommon first Spanish edition of Cook's first voyage, published in 1832 as part of a series called the "New Library of Modern Voyages useful and interesting for Spanish youth."This work has a charming series of six plates which include a scene in Tahiti featuring the Chief Mourner, two New Zealand scenes (a warrior in profile, the war canoe), and concluding with a dramatic scene on board the Endeavour. The presence of the original printed wrappers bound-in is of more than passing interest as the back wrappers give an interesting overview of how the set was marketed, being sold for 6 reales per volume as they were issued whether in Madrid or in the provinces, and stressing the value of the work for the instruction of youth. Each volume would subsequently be priced 8 reales per volume. The translator, Alvarado y de la Pen?a, based his work on the French edition. He also prepared at least one other work of Australian interest, an edition of George Barrington published in Madrid circa 1815.Beddie listed copies in the Mitchell and National Library.

Voyage de découvertes autour du monde et à la recherche de La Pérouse.

Paris: Librairie Encyclopédique de Roret, 1832-33. Ten octavo text volumes bound as five, and folio atlas with a portrait of Dumont d'Urville and 20 maps and plates (six coloured);a good set in a recent French period style quarter navy polished calf, spines lettered numbered and banded in gilt. This is a notably scarce version of the official account of Dumont d'Urville's first voyage, publishing the voyage narrative and a careful selection of the fine lithographic plates. The Astrolabe was renamed for this voyage in honour of La Pérouse's lost ship; it had previously sailed as the Coquille in Duperrey's expedition in the early 1820s, with Dumont d'Urville serving as second-in-command. The expedition visited Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific in 1826-29; it was a major scientific undertaking and a large number of natural history specimens were collected returned to France. Likewise, the haul of geographical and ethnological information was considerable. The full publication of the voyage was extensive, numbering some 13 text volumes accompanied by five folio atlas volumes. Exclusive and expensive, the official account was beyond the means of most readers, hence the desire for this abridged and accessible edition. It includes as narrative text the Historique section of the full voyage account, though the title has been changed to include the words "et à la recherche de La Pérouse", and has a selection of eight maps and 12 plates as a separately bound atlas volume. Three of the twelve plates issued with this edition are Australian Aboriginal studies lithographed from drawings by the official artist Louis Sainson. A coloured portrait plate of two Aboriginal men is followed by depictions of two encounters, one at the Georges River and the other at Jervis Bay. Of additional interest are two coloured Maori portrait plates, and further studies of the native inhabitants of New Guinea, Vanikoro and Tikopia. The maps are notable as some of the finest ever produced of the Pacific, and include charts of Australia and New Zealand, New Guinea, Fiji, Tonga and Vanikoro. One of the primary objectives of the voyage was to confirm the fate of the ill-fated La Pérouse expedition, a long-standing source of mystery and speculation. The wreck of La Pérouse's Astrolabe had been reported a few years previously by Peter Dillon, the South Seas trader, suggesting that the island of Vanikoro (present day Solomons) was the French explorer's final resting place. Dumont d'Urville's expedition confirmed this, and erected a monument to La Pérouse and his men upon the island (the ceremony is memorialised in a fine lithographed plate included in the atlas to this edition). This is surprisingly rare on the market and not noted by several standard bibliographies. This edition was only noted for the Ferguson Addenda volume from the set of the text in the State Library of Victoria and from a copy of the atlas volume that appeared (without text) in a Bernard Quaritch catalogue in 1983. McLaren too could cite the atlas only from the Ferguson/Quaritch entry. Some browning and foxing of the text as sometimes found with this paper stock, also affecting a few plates.

Recent plain half brown cloth, marbled boards in 19thC style. There is only a single copy of the first pamphlet (164pp) recorded on Copac, at Durham, a single copy of the second pamphlet (119pp) in the BL, and no copies of the 17pp Carlsruhe pamphlet. The case of Kaspar Hauser, 1812(?)-1833, a supposed 'foundling child' brought up in a dungeon, excited much interest throughout Europe. He first appeared in Nuremberg in 1828. Feuerbach was the Bavarian judge who investigated the case and placed Hauser with a schoolmaster, Friedrich Daumer. After incidents where Hauser was attacked, or appeared to have been attacked, Stanhope took an interest and became Hauser's foster parent, placing him with another schoolmaster, Johann Meyer, at Ansbach. After an argument between Meyer and Hauser in 1833, the latter came home wounded and later died from injuries which were suspected of being self-inflicted. Stanhope, who had originally promised to bring Hauser to England, admitted after the death of his protégé that he had been duped.

With a lithographic plate. Contemp. wrappers. Very rare study of the defects of the umbilical cord, with a plate (showing embryos) lithographed after the author's own drawings. With this habilitation, Froriep (1804-61) gained a Professorship of Medicine in Berlin, but he had to forsake this career in 1845 when his father, himself once a great surgeon and obstetrician, fell ill and Robert had to take over the publishing house "Landes-Industrie-Comptoir" which Ludwig Friedrich v. Froriep - the son-in-law of and successor to the famous publisher Bertuch - had headed. A correspondent with Goethe, Robert Froriep also taught anatomic drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts. "Obgleich er in den von ihm besonders cultivirten Wissenschaften, der beschreibenden und pathologischen Anatomie, keine hervorragenden Entdeckungen gemacht hat, hat er durch seine zahlreichen Unternehmungen [...] die Wissenschaft wesentlich gefördert und namentlich zur Popularisierung von kostspieligen ausländischen Abbildungswerken, die ohne ihn daselbst nur wenig bekannt geworden wären, wesentlich beigetragen" (Hirsch II, 455). - Slight waterstaining near end (mainly affecting the plate's lower margin).       Various, Disbound, Book Condition: Very Good Condition, First Edition. Full Book Title: THE RAILWAY SYSTEM OF GREAT BRITAIN 1832-1901. A unique collection of 69 early articles on Railway Accidents, Railway Management, Railway Companies, Railway Legislation. All published between 1832 - 1901. Includes interesting pieces on the Midlothian Railway (1833), the Principles of Railway Management (1846), the London and Northwest Railway (1848), Fatal Accidents (1851), Financial Prospects (1859), Bradshaw Guides (1866), Railway Rates and Fares (1875), Administration (1885), Railway Mismanagement (1892). In total, around 1600 pages. A full list of the articles in the collection is available on request. This extensive collection is especially interesting in that it contains material that looks at railways from a different perspective than the usual engineering or locomotive aspects. Instead, it examines the position of the railway companies in handling issues such as fatal accidents, injuries, even suicides on the railway. It seeks to discuss fares and worker's wages, the value of railway shares, the taxation of railways, the costs of railway development and the risks represented by the rapid growth in the "Railway Mania" period, together with the role of government legislation and the difficulties parliament had in keeping up with the progress of the railway safety, utility of services and finances. Whilst there have been ample and often simply derivative studies of the early years of the railways in Britain, much less has been written about the challenges that railway growth brought to the management of the companies, along with the important role that they played in the industrial, commercial, and social development of the country. The type of material in this collection has often been overlooked in the standard and popular studies of railway history, and will provide ample opportunity for new and interesting insights. A collection such as this would be close to impossible to reassemble, especially in these original formats, and is a very useful collection of primary source material that will allow and encourage further research into this key period of the development of railways in Britain, particularly as it takes such an unusual overview of this key early period. Note; this is a collection of 69 articles all separated and disbound from other volumes, not offprints or reprints, amounting to around 1600 pages. Overall condition is very good, with bright clean, easily readable pages. There is some browning here and there to a few pages, but not many. Each article is contained in a clear protective sleeve for safe handling. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Quantity Available: 1. Category: Antiquarian & Rare; Collections. Inventory No: 233456.

Fishmongers' Hall, London. Henry Roberts Architect.

Day & Haghe, Lithrs. to the King [1832]., London, - Fishmonger's Hall Lithograph with original hand colour. The livery hall of the Fishmongers' Company was demolished in 1827 to make way for the construction of the new London Bridge. This print was presumably produced to celebrate the impending completion of the construction of the new hall. A competition was announced to find the architect, and 87 entrants applied. The eventual winner was Henry Roberts (1803-76), a British architect who had only set up his own practice two years before. The Fishmongers' Hall, which stands to this day (albeit damaged during the Second World War), is his best known work.William Day (1797-1845) and Louis Haghe (1806-85) formed a partnership which became one of the largest British lithographic firms of the nineteenth century, and was successful enough to gain a royal warrant in 1838. After William's death in 1845 the company was run by his son W.J. Day, and in the early 1850s when Louis Haghe left to concentrate on watercolours the firm became known as Day and Sons.         A history and description of the Liverpool & Manchester railway

Liverpool: Published by Thomas Taylor, 1832. 71pp, [1]. With an engraved folding frontispiece depicting the engines and carriages of the line. Original publisher's printed yellow paper wrappers, housed in recent custom black cloth case. Some loss and cracking to spine, upper wrap working loose, lightly foxed. Contemporary ink ownership inscription to recto of FFEP; 'Saml. Manning / Liverpool 1832', internally clean and crisp. A succinct history of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, the first public transport system to abandon animal traction power and rely exclusively upon steam engines, opened on 15th September 1830. The train that day was drawn by the Northumbrian, constructed from a design of George Stephenson's based upon his pioneering locomotive the Rocket. She conveyed in an ornamental carriage, amongst other dignitaries, then Prime Minister the Duke of Wellington. The festivities of the opening ceremony were however marred by the death of sometime local MP William Huskisson. Huskisson, having alighted as the train halted to take on water, strolled alongside the cars to greet Wellington. As he did so Stephenson's Rocket approached from the opposite direction on an adjacent track. In the ensuing panic Huskisson failed to board the carriage in time, despite the best efforts of his fellow passengers, and received what would be a mortal injury to his leg as it was crushed between engine and rail; thus becoming the first widely reported railway fatality. Despite this tragic incident the line proved a great success, becoming the model for all further railway engineering exploits. This work provides an account of the development and construction of the line, and a description of the events which occurred during the inaugural journey. . First edition. 12mo.
