Der Burgberg in Meißen, von Westen gesehen

Memoirs of Doctor Burney. In three volumes

London - Edward Moxon, 1832. London - Edward Moxon, 1832 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A lovely scarce first edition set of this moving biography of a fascinating character. 'Arranged from his own manuscripts, from family papers, and from personal recollections'. Watermarks of Michaelangelo,France to endpapers of volume II. Frances Burney (13 June 1752 6 January 1840), also known as Fanny Burney and, after her marriage, as Madame dArblay, was an English novelist, diarist and playwright. In homage to her father she gathered and in 1832 published, in three volumes, the Memoirs of Doctor Burney. The memoirs were written in a laudatory style, praising her father's accomplishments and character, and she cannibalised many of her own personal writings from years before in order to produce them. Charles Burney FRS (7 April 1726 12 April 1814) was an English music historian. The University of Oxford honoured Burney, on 23 June 1769, with the degrees of Bachelor and Doctor of Music, and his own work was performed. In 1769 he published An Essay towards a History of Comets. Amidst his various professional avocations, Burney never lost sight of his main projecthis History of Musicand decided to travel abroad and collect materials that could not be found in Britain. Accordingly, he left London in June 1770, carrying numerous letters of introduction, and travelled to Paris, Geneva, Turin, Milan, Padua, Venice, Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples. The results of his observations were published in The Present State of Music in France and Italy (1771). This was very well received. In July 1772 Burney again visited the continent, to do further research, and, after his return to London, published his tour under the title of The Present State of Music in Germany, the Netherlands and United Provinces (1773). In 1773 he was chosen as a fellow of the Royal Society. In 1776 appeared the first volume (in quarto) of his long-projected History of Music. In 1782 Burney published his second volume; and in 1789 the third and fourth. Condition: Rebound in half morocco with marbled boards. Externally excellent, just alittle shelfwear.         Tales Of My Landlord

Edinburgh - William Blackwood - London - John Murray, 1832. Edinburgh - William Blackwood - London - John Murray, 1832 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.
