Wild Sports of the West. With Legendary Tales, and Local Sketches.

London: Richard Bentley, 1832 - 2 volumes, octavo (212 x 132 mm). Later 19th century dark red half calf by Larkins, richly gilt spines, black morocco twin labels, marbled sides and endpapers. Bound without the half-title in volume I (as called-for by Sadleir), bindings a little rubbed, a few gatherings a little proud, scattered foxing or signs of handling. An attractive set. Aquatint frontispieces, 3 plates, 12 wood-engravings in the text. First edition. "In 1829 Maxwell achieved recognition as a writer when Henry Colburn published his Stories of Waterloo, for which he paid him £300. Three years later one of his most popular books appeared: Wild Sports of the West (1832). This contained lively tales and legends together with colourful descriptions of Irish people, sporting activities (such as salmon fishing and deer hunting), and the Connaught countryside. Maxwell had thus become a progenitor of two kinds of fiction which became popular in the 1830s and 1840s: the military novel and the rollicking story of Irish life" (ODNB). The presence of aquatint illustrations is unusual, and the wood engravings in the text, mostly signed "T. Bagg", are delightful. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Purple Swamphen. Hyacinthe Porphyrio

London: [by the Author, 1832. Hand-coloured lithograph by John and Elizabeth Gould. Printed by C. Hullmandel. A beautiful image from John Gould's 'The Birds of Europe': a work which, according to Hyman, 'included some of the most remarkable bird drawings ever made'. This plate is from the second of John Gould's great ornithological portfolios. Gould undertook this work not only hoping to build on the success of his first work (on the birds of the Himalaya mountains), but also in an effort to redress the imbalance between the study of local and foreign ornithology. It was his opinion that too much attention had focused on the exotic, whilst the beauty of the more local species was ignored. He wrote in the preface to the work from which this image comes: 'It has been frequently remarked that the productions of distant countries have received a much larger share of attention than those objects by which we are more immediately surrounded; and it is certainly true, that while numerous and costly illustrations have made us acquainted with the Ornithology of most other parts of the world, the Birds of Europe, in which we are, or ought to be, more interested, have not received that degree of attention which they naturally demand. The present work has been undertaken to supply that deficiency.' The images in this work are the first to be published by Gould that show the liveliness of treatment that was to become such a feature of later works. This break from the traditional methods of bird depiction can be largely attributed to the influence of and contributions from Edward Lear: 'They are certainly among the most remarkable bird drawings ever made, [for] it is evident that Lear endowed them with some measure of his own whimsy and intelligence, his energetic curiosity, his self-conscious clumsiness and his unselfconscious charm'.         Annals and Antiquities of Rajast';han, or the Central and Western Rajpoot States of India

Half-titles. 3 letterpress tables (1 folding). 50 plates, plans and maps by Edward Finden and others after Captain Waugh, Ghafasi and others (including: 1 folding engraved map, hand-coloured in outline, 28 engraved plates after Waugh [1 folding], 11 engraved plates after Ghafasi, 3 lithographs [1 folding, 2 drawn on stone by Louis Haghe and on india paper mounted]). (Small repaired hole to the inner margin of the frontispiece of vol.II). Later red half morocco over red cloth-covered boards by Root & Son, spines gilt in six compartments with raised bands, the bands highlighted in gilt and blind, lettered in gilt in the second and fourth compartments, marbled endpapers, t.e.g. First edition of this valuable early study of the history, beliefs and topography of Rajasthan in north west India. The author went to India as a cadet in the Bengal army of the British East India Company in 1799. He commanded the escort attached to the Resident at Sindhia from 1812 to 1817. In the latter year he was in charge of the Intelligence Department which largely contributed to the break up of the Maratha Confederacy in the Third Anglo-Maratha War, and was of great assistance in the campaign in Rajputana. In 1818 he was appointed political agent for the states of western Rajputana, where he successfully acted as a aribitrator between rival chieftains, settling their feuds. While Resident in Rajputana, Tod collected materials for his Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan , a work of great importance for South Asian scholars. At the dawn of the archaeological and historical study of India, Tod presents the contemporary geography and a detailed history of Rajputana along with the history of the Rajput clans who ruled most of the area at that time. Tod's work drew on local archives, Rajput traditional sources, and monuments such as the Edicts of Asoka found at Junagadh. He returned to England in 1823 with a wealth of material for what became a fundamental study of Rajast'han's historical development. The work is ornamented with a fine series of plates, the majority of which are from drawings either by a local artist whose name is given as Ghafsi, or Captain Waugh, a friend and kinsman of the author who died just before the work was published. The work was much appreciated in the region at the time, to the extent that the ruler of Udaipur renamed a village in Tod's honour: Barsawada became "Todgarh" (or Tods fort) - a name that it still bears today.

A LITHOGRAPH WITH HAND-COLOURING IN GOUACHE OF CANTON HONGS,THE QUAY, SHOWING TH

[Canton ca. 1832-41]. A large lithograph, hand coloured. gouache, lower left corner states "Canton," very good, 38.5. x 25.2 cm., gilt framed & glazed to 63 x 50.5 cm.,very clean. unsigned work. A UNIQUE AND RARE EARLY CANTON VIEW. A truly lovely hand-coloured lithograph, in folio size, with large margins. A lovely piece with no flaws in the print whatsoever. * THE SUBJECT MATTER OF THE SCENE: The foreground is the harbour, with several large Chinese junks & sampans moving about. Their long black braided queue and traditional Hakka hats visible. In the background are a large number of two-storied red tile-roofed foreign-style buildings are done in the European manner. These are foreign "factories" and each flies the flag of their respective nationality. This shows American flag in the center, on the right of that is the Union Jack of Great Britain, then the Dutch flag. To the left of the Americans are the Spanish. See reference below in Lee. The British & Dutch "factories" are both surrounded by a tall and very substantial wooden fence. Although undated, the Americans did establish their own trading "factory" in Canton ca. 1784 an approximate date can be derived from the fact that the French flag was installed around the mid-1780's then, in 1832 & 1841, when many of the foreign "factories" were destroyed by a huge conflagration. This view shows the new "factories" rebuilt after that fire, so we therefore date it ca. 1832-1841. With an exceptionally good view of the American garden. * A large number of people, perhaps foreign soldiers or sailors are on parade before the American compound. Several Chinese are visible walking along the beach-front with their traditional bamboo poles [yoke] suspended by two people who haul a heavy load. A gala and lively scene, with many small Chinese flags flying on the native vessels. Several of the Sampams in the foreground have Chinese people who are look- ing directly at the foreign artist who is engaged in drawing them & the view of the Hongs. Had the artist been a Chinese onlookers would have no interest in looking. Because it is a "rare" Westerner, the Chinese have noticed him and turned their heads in the direction of the artist to have a good good look at the strange "Hong Mao" ["red hairs" or foreign- er] or "Gui Lo" a "foreign devil." * The work is finely drawn in a steady hand even though it was clearly executed from aboard a floating vessel or Sampan in the busy Canton harbor. It was done with great skill and in fine lines, reproducing details of the gay and lively scene with an almost "photographic" or realistic quality, typical of the work by Western artists of the period. * A truly lovely and early hand-coloured tinted [gouache] lithographic work by a Westerner showing a very primitive Canton waterfront and the Hongs in a most charming manner. Graphics of this period and subject matter are always quite RARE ! * PRINTING TECHNIQUE AND CONDITION: The technique involved is somewhat of a mystery. While it looks as if this was a lithograph, there is no "plate mark" in the margins what so ever, possibly meaning that because the medium was so very stiff, such a mark did not occur. For the most part, lithographic prints had some "plate mark" surrounding the print impressed on the paper medium, giving evidence of the printing technique. However, when the medium is a stiff card, this can not be the case. What is curious about this folio sized item, is that it is printed on very a board, approximately 1 mm. thick, which is several times the thickness of standard lithographic print medium. While this technique was used by Currier and Ives at a later date, it is conceivable that the technique began earlier in the 1820-30's. The 6.5 cm. full and generous margins are typical of other lithographs of this period, The verso of this print has some evidence of mild foxing, which has as NOT bled through the very thick board to the front side, There is a small mend at the lower left corner area as well as a small "bend" in the lower right corner, which is now stable. It is noteworthy to say, that neither of these minor issues affect the print at all being located in the wide margins. The face of the print is remarkably clean, bright and flawless, with the gouache executed with substantial skill showing clouds at the top and the details of the work are superbly done ! A handsome work in deed ! * REFERENCES: James Orange: THE CHATER COLLECTION: Pictures Relating to China, Hong Kong, Macao 1655-1880. The standard and most reliable single period source on the subject, with superb illustrated examples. * L. Crossman: THE CHINA TRADE. A standard reference on the whole subject, including Canton and trade. * Jean Lee: PHILADELPHIANS AND THE CHINA TRADE 1784-1844, pp. 38-39; p.173,#175; p.194 #210. Lee is an excellent resource for identification of foreign flags flying along the Hongs of Canton in her book see again, pp. 38-39 and page 194 for her citations. * A MARVELOUS AND UNIQUE PIECE, A SUPERB ADDITION TO ANY COLLECTION !         Voyage au Congo

1832 - (AFRICA) DOUVILLE, Jean-Baptiste. Voyage au Congo et dans l’Intérieur de l’Afrique Équinoxiale, Fait dans les Années 1828, 1829 et 1830. Paris: Jules Renouard, 1832. Three volumes and Atlas. Octavo, original pale blue printed wrappers, uncut and unopened; Atlas, slim folio (11-1/2 by 15 inches), original wrappers rebacked. Housed in custom paper-covered slipcase and clamshell box. $8500.First edition of this early description of the Congo and the far interior of Angola, with the rare Atlas containing an engraved title page, list of plates, 20 full-page lithographs of inhabitants and their way of life, and a large engraved folding map of the African interior by Brué.Douville (1794-1837) excited first wild enthusiasm and then widespread skepticism upon publication of his Voyage au Congo in 1832, on account of his explorations into the very heart of Africa. Although the work came under attack for fabrication, Douville maintained the authenticity of his account, and even Sir Richard Burton maintained that the Frenchman’s descriptions of the Congo were lifelike; that his observations on the anthropology, ceremonies, customs an maladies of the people were remarkably accurate; and that the native words used in his narrative were “for the most part given with unusual correctness.” “Douville continues to intrigue historians, not only because of the romantic and mysterious quality of the French traveler’s life, but because his bookâ€" if authenticâ€" contains valuable information about the far interior of Angola at a period when few other sources allow more than occasional glimpses of the history and culture of the people who lived there. Douville’s credibility has recently received renewed support [by way of] verifying the accuracy of his data on the climate, geography, politics, and society, [noting] that many names appear in print for the first time in Douville and only later make their entry into the accounts of other travelers” (Joseph C. Miller). The scholarly consensus is that the chief source for Douville’s work was likely a group of unpublished Portuguese manuscripts to which he had ready access. The accompanying Atlas contains a large map by Adrien Hubert Brué. Between 1810-30, Brué was perhaps the most important practitioner of French cartography. His travels took him to the West African coast and South Asia and he was a member of the Société de Géographie de Paris and of the Royal Geographical Society in London. Brué held the office of Géographe du Roi and often signed his maps accordingly. His maps are characterized by precise accuracy, clarity of line and beautiful detail. Brué map laid into the Atlas. Text in French. Howgego D27. Slight soiling to exteriors, small wormhole to last gathering of Volume III (not affecting text). A nearly fine unopened copy in original wrappers.         Preliminary catalogue of fixed stars intended for a prospectus of a catalogue of the stars of the Southern Hemisphere included within the Tropic of Capricorn now reducing from the observations made in the observatory at Paramatta.

Hamburgh: Printed for Perthes & Besser 4to (25 cm; 10"). 20, xxv pp.. 1832 One has to say it plainly: this is => a foundation work of Australian science and an important one for the history of world astronomy — the first Australian star catalogue. Christian Carl Ludwig Rümker (a.k.a. Charles Rumker, 1788–1862) was born at Stargard, Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Germany; he studied to be a builder and passed his master builder examination in 1807 but abandoned that career for teaching mathematics. Two years later, he gave that up in favor of the sea and England, serving variously as a midshipman in the East India Company, a helmsman in the merchant navy, a teacher of sea cadets, and an officer on H.M.S.'s Benbow, Montagu, and Albion. His introduction to astronomy came while on Mediterranean service, where he made the acquaintance of Baron Franz-Xaver de Zach, an Austrian astronomer. He published various papers and his work attracted favorable review. Captain Peter Heywood, under whom he had served in the Montagu, recommended him to Sir Thomas Brisbane, the newly appointed governor of Australia, and Rümker was engaged as the governor's private astronomer; he landed in Australia as a member of the Brisbane party. Once Gov. Brisbane's Parramatta observatory was completed in 1822 he began his work, and made significant discoveries, but friction with Brisbane caused him to resign; he returned to Parramatta in 1826, was appointed the official government astronomer in 1827, and continued thus through the end of the decade. For his later life, quarrels, and achievements we recommend the fine article in the online Australian Dictionary of Biography. RumkerÂ’s catalogue of stars visible in the southern hemisphere had both a purely scientific aim and a practical one. The systematic study and cataloguing of the stars visible with the aid of observatory-based telescopy in the southern hemisphere was in its infancy in the 1820s: The Royal Observatory at the Cape of Good Hope was established in 1820 and was the first permanent astronomical observatory in the southern hemisphere. Thus one can see the importance of Parramatta being up and working in 1822. On the practical side, Gov. Brisbane was a naval officer who knew the importance of the stars in navigation. RumkerÂ’s work and his catalogue served both science and the Royal Navy, as he offered "Constants of Aberration and Nutation"; a "Comparison of my Observations with those made by La Caille"; and notes on "Double Stars," "Magnitudes and Colour of the Stars, Nebula's, &c.," and so forth — with the grand quotation of our caption being taken from his Preface. Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate only nine copies in U.S. libraries. Provenance: Presented to Alexander Dallas Bache, a great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin and at the time of publication of this work a professor of natural philosophy and chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania: "Professor A.D. Bache / with the author's Compts." in ink on the front wrapper. Publisher's blue-green wrappers, text block stitched as issued. Overall age-toning; occasional foxing; faint waterstaining in upper third of most pages. Overall a good++ copy.

A Description of the Genus Pinus, with directions relative to the cultivation, and remarks on the uses of the several species: also descriptions of many other new species of the family Coniferæ

London: Messrs. Weddell, 1832. 2 volumes, octavo. (10 5/8 x 6 5/8 inches). Stipple-engraved portrait frontispiece of the author with integral engraved caption beneath incorporating hand-coloured Lambert family arms, 75 engraved plates (72 hand-coloured, 1 printed in green, 2 uncoloured, 11 folding) with at least 41 of these plates laid down onto backing sheets (as issued). Expertly bound to style in red straight-grained half morocco over contemporary green/grey paper-covered boards, the flat spines divided into six compartments by single gilt fillets, lettered in gilt in the second, third and fourth compartments, gilt Provenance: Edward Duke (armorial bookplate); William Russell Grace (1832-1904, armorial bookplate) A fine copy of the first octavo edition of Lambert's great work on the pine trees of the world. The earliest edition of Lambert's important monograph was published in two large folio volumes between 1803 and 1824. It then appeared in various formats with varying numbers of plates, including the present octavo edition, until the Bohn folio issue of 1842. Lowndes notes that the fine plates in the octavo edition are made up from "sections of some of the plates" from the larger folio work and new versions of other plates. The fine plates retain much of the power of their larger folio cousins. Stafleu tacitly agrees with Great Flower Books assessment of this book as one of the most bibliographically complex of all natural history works when he notes that "All copies show differences": this copy in addition to having three or four more plates than the accepted norm, is also (like the de Belder copy) without the appendix leaves which are found at the end of some copies. Irish-born William Russell Grace, co-founder of W.R Grace and Co., was an American success story who rose from relative poverty to be one of the richest men in the country. He was also a noted philanthropist and served two terms as Mayor of New York. Henrey III, 923; Great Flower Books (1990) p. 111; Harvard Catalogue of the Library of the Arnold Arboretum p.409; Lowndes II, p.1302; Nissen BBI 1126; Pritzel 5010; Stafleu & Cowan II, 4146.

        The Costume of Hindostan

London: Edward Orme, , [plates watermarked] 1832. Elucidated by Sixty Coloured Engravings; with Descriptions in English and French, taken in the Years 1798 and 1799. Folio (356 × 258 mm) Full contemporary red morocco, neatly rebacked with the original spine laid down, title gilt to the spine, broad flat bands, first, third and fifth compartments densely gilt, broad arabesqued foliate roll, gilt to the boards, enclosing similar, narrower, roll in blind, all edges gilt. 60 hand-coloured aquatint plates. A little rubbed, carefully restored at the extremities, corners, head- and tail-caps, and on the joints, endpapers renewed, light browning, and a scatter of foxing, largely to the text leaves, mild off-setting from the plates, a very good copy. Later issue. Originally published in parts in 1804-5, and first published in book form in 1807, Martin Hardie remarks on the book's "somewhat interesting history". A professional artist, Solvyns was born in Antwerp in 1760, trained at the Academy there, and embarked on a career as a marine artist. Around 1790 he "went to India to seek his fortune, but soon found that he could not compete with British artists already established there" (India Observed). Managing to survive on various small commissions, he eventually attracted the interest of William Jones, and was encouraged to embark on the "grandiose scheme for a huge work on the dress, manners and customs of the Hindus". Between 1796 and 1799 he published his Collection of Two Hundred and Fifty Coloured Etchings … which was not well-received, but this selection of images, based on "water-colour copies [made] from Solvyn's originals" (Abbey) by William Orme, and published - perhaps piratically - by his older brother Edward, did at least seem to attract some positive attention. Solvyns's overall lack of success has been attributed to the fact that "for a public now used to the superb aquatints of Thomas Daniell, his engravings appeared, as a contemporary wrote, 'very rude'. Nevertheless his figures with their dignified and almost tragic air, form a unique survey of the people of Bengal and their daily life" (India Observed). An attractive copy of a work which has much appeal to the modern eye, both for its simplicity and directness of style, and its value as a document.

Le Porteur d'Eau Espagnol, ou Le Trésor Enchanté, suivi de La Griffe du Diable, et l'Apparition au Cimetière. [Legend of the Moor's Legacy.]

Chez Baudot, Imprimieur-Libraire (after 1832), Troyes - First edition in French. Title page with a woodcut illustration. In publisher's illustrated wrappers. 32 p. First French edition of the story of the "Legend of the Moor's Legacy" that was published first in 1832 in Washington Irving's collection of essays the "Tales of the Alhambra". The book was concurrently published in London, Philadelphia and Paris, and this story most likely have been pirated from the latter edition, translated into French and published in such format. The unrecognizable title and the lack of the author's name on the wrappers and the title page also implies this, however the author's name could be found at the end of the book, with a typo "Wasington Irving". Scarce book, WorldCat locates no copies in institutional holdings, however we could trace a copy in the collection of the George Peabody Library in Baltimore (in: Second Catalogue of the Library of the Peabody Institute of the City of Baltimore, Including the Additions Made Since 1882. Vol. 1. Baltimore, 1896.). Edges chipped. Rear wrapper and last page slightly damaged. Overall in good condition. In publisher's illustrated wrappers First edition in French. Schmitt, Rheinbeschreibungen, 132 - und vermutlich auch in dieser ersten Baedeker-Ausgabe von 1832 ursprünglich enthalten war.), in Französisch, sehr selten (Hinrichsen, F 1; erster Reiseführer unter dem Verlagsnamen Bädeker, vgl. wikipedia-Eintrag: \"Da Baedeker die Rheinreise aber bereits 1832 in der französischen Übersetzung als Voyage du Rhin unter dem eigenen Verlagsnamen auf den Markt gebracht hatte, muss dieser Band als die eigentliche Geburtsstunde des „Baedeker“ betrachtet werden.\"), auf Wunsch senden wir gerne weitere Photos des Buches / bound in new cloth with glued parts of the original softcover (these parts of the original bindings stained and stronger rubbed), name on title page, a very few pages slightly foxed, (the paper makes the impression of having been professionally cleaned), 2 pages reinforced with paper strips at the edge, else fine, (after the title page follows the page \"5\" with the first chapter \"De à Mayence Bingen\". Probably here is missing the 3-page unnumbered preface, which is proved for the French-language edition v. Roehling in 1829 and which was probably also included in this edition of 1832.), text in French, very rare (Hinrichsen F 1), to get additional images of this book please contact us, Versand D: 4,90 EUR

American Signal Book, or The United States Telegraph Vocabulary Being an Appendix to ElfordÂ’s Marine Telegraph Signal Book Adapted to the Use of the New Semaphoric Telegraph, to Which is Added the Boston Harbor Signal Book

Boston: Steam Power Press Office, 1832. 132, 8 pp. Color and b/w plates. First edition of a scarce American book of signals, with a hand colored lithograph flag plate by Annin, Smith & Co., and two b/w plates illustrating signaling systems. Parker wrote several works on semaphore signals, and this 1832 edition is one of the earliest. It is also a bit of a bibliographic puzzle. Several different arrangements of text seem to have been published, and there is also a version in which the date on the cover is 1835, and the title page date is 1832. The printed cover of this book is titled “Telegraph Vocabulary and Boston Harbor Signal Book." The title page has a cancel slip pasted at the top of the title reading, “American Signal Book.” Original printed boards list the book's distributors, including Lemual Moody of Portland, and James Elford of Charleston, SC. The back board displays and explains ParkerÂ’s signaling system.
