Notes on the Bedouins and Wahábys, collected during his Travels in the East.

1831 - Second edition. 2 vols. With a folding map. 8vo.Contemporary half morocco with marbled paper boards, the spines lettered in gilt; three small areas of loss to spine of volume two, corners of both vols. slightly worn, very good otherwise. x, 382; iv, 391pp. London, Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley, The fourth and final work of the famous Swiss explorer, published posthumously by the Association for Promoting the Discovery of the Interior of Africa. Though Burckhardt's travels were limited to the Hijaz, he assiduously gathered information on Central and Western Arabia by seeking the counsel of those caravaners, pilgrims and traders who passed through the Holy Cities. Such research allowed him to put forth the present work. It is divided into two distinct parts; in the first of which ?we find not only an enumeration of the Bedouin tribes, and a statement of their various establishments, numbers, and military force; but an account of their extraordinary customs manners and institutions; of their arts and sciences, dress, arms, and many other particulars relative to that interesting race of Arabs.?(Preface by William Ouseley, p.iv). In the second section Burckhardt ?has compiled from such original information, both written and oral, as seemed on minute inquiry, most authentic, a history of those Mohammedan sectaries, and fierce enthusiasts, the Wahàbys; tracing them from their earliest appearance as reformers, in the last century, through all their wars with other Arabs, and with the Turks down to 1816.? (ibid., p.iv). Provenance: With the ownership inscription of the American gynaecologist Charles Bingham Penrose (1862 to 1925) to the front-free endpaper in both volumes. Also present are the engraved bookplates of his son Boies Penrose II (1902-1976), a noted book collector, anglophile and travel historian. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Henry Colburn And Richard Bentley, London, 1831. First Edition. Hardcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Henry Fuseli RA (German: Johann Heinrich Füssli; 1741 - 1825), Swiss painter, draughtsman and writer on art who spent most of his life in Britain where his work is said to have influenced many of the artists of his age including William Blake and his pupils included John Constable, Benjamin Haydon, William Etty, and Edwin Landseer. Books - originally bound in thin, brown paper covered boards with green cloth spines and paper labels, here professionally rebound in similar light brown/beige paper covered boards, green cloth spines with paper labels. Contents, new, linen webbing to strengthen binding, new paste downs, free front and rear end papers. Light browning to portrait frontispiece (volume 1) and all three title pages with slight marking to the occasional page in all three volumes. Volume one has slight marking to pages 323 and 418 and there is slight marking to the occasional page otherwise the contents are clean and tightly bound. [NB. The contents pages in volume two and three were misprinted on the sheets meaning that the title page of volume two was printed on the same pair of leaves, or conjugate, with the contents page for volume three and likewise the title page for volume three is conjugate with the contents for volume two, meaning that they are in the wrong volumes. This is obviously a little inconvenient so we have included a copy of each page in the correct volume. It would be simple enough to make a more permanent correction by removing and tipping the two misplaced pages in to the correct volumes but we feel that would spoil the charm of having such a scarce set being 'as printed'. Overall an attractive copy of this scarce and important biography. Size: 9 inches tall by 5.5 inches. xvi, 439, 391, 408 rough trimmed pages which includes an appendix in volume one. Duer", also signed by the recording secretary, "Ira B. Underhill". If they came as pagans, let them go back as Christians.....our criminal calendar bears melancholy witness. Comparing the relative proportions of white and colored population in our state, more than nine-tenths of those who are arraigned at our police establishments and courts of sessions, and who occupy the cells of our bridewells, penitentiaries, and state prisons, are, we are constrained to say of the latter description."

THE LIFE OF DAVID MARKS TO THE 26TH YEAR OF HIS AGE

Limerick, Me: Printed at the Office of the Morning Star, 1831. FIRST EDITION. This memoir by a young Freewill Baptist preacher of Jewish ancestry contains the earliest known critique of the "Book of Mormon," a work Marks encountered during his evangelical efforts on the New York frontier. Marks (1805-45) grew up in Seneca County, New York, about 15 miles from the home of Mormon prophet Joseph Smith. Inspired by the revivalist fervor of his childhood, Marks early felt a call to the ministry, and by the age of 16 he was travelling to New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Kentucky, Connecticut, and north into Canada, spreading the word of God and baptizing converts. He records his travels here, including a visit to the Mormon Whitmer family in New York, where he first heard of the Book of Mormon, along with the golden plates dug up by Joseph Smith from which it was taken, and the community of faithful adherents it had attracted. Marks was unimpressed, finding the writing uninspired, with nothing approaching the quality of the Apocrypha or the Alcoran, much less the Bible. He disapproved of the secrecy surrounding its origins and of Smith's obtaining a copyright and profiting from the work. He concluded that "the Bible is a book of perfect harmony, and unrivalled sublimity; the 'Book of Mormon' is full of absurdity, and too dull to charm the soul." (p. 342) Marks' ceaseless travel and punishing work schedule wore on his health, and he died at the age of 40.. 180 x 105 mm. (7 1/8 x 4 1/4"). 396 pp. FIRST EDITION. Original flamed sheep, black morocco label on spine. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Marks, with tissue guard. Flake 5277; Sabin 44624; Howes M-293. A little rubbing to joints and extremities, spine a bit sunned, persistent offsetting and variable foxing (usually minor, never severe), isolated corner creases or small stains, but a really excellent copy, the text with no significant imperfections and the unrestored binding remarkably well preserved.         Porträtt av skulptören Bengt Erland Fogelberg (1786-1854).

Olja på duk. Signerad: "Sandberg". Skrivet a tergo på en etikett: "B. E. Fogelberg sign. Sandberg". 27,5 × 22,5 cm. Förgylld originalram. Proveniens: Troligen i konstnärens ägo till åtminstone 1831. | C. F. Lindberg, Stockholm 1898.

      J. C. Schünmann, 1831., Dorpat, Estonia: - 2 volumes in 1. 4to. [8], 360; [8], 424, [3] pp. 13 folding plates; light scattered foxing especially at plates and through p. 20, pages largely un-opened. Original printed wrappers; edges and spine chipped, top spine edges torn, hand-written ink front cover title. Spine and front cover library labels, rubber stamps to front cover and title-page (observatory in Utrecht and a Technical Library in Deft). UNTRIMMED IN ORIGINAL PUBLISHER'S PLAIN WRAPPERS, AS ISSUED. Very good +. FIRST EDITION of Struve's pioneering geodetic work. These measurements represent the initiation of the Struve Geodetic Arc, "a chain of survey triangulations stretching from Hammerfest in Norway to the Black Sea, through ten countries and over 2,820 km, which yielded the first accurate measurement of a meridian" (Wikipedia). "The work carried out under Dr. Struve's supervision in Tartu during 1816-1855 was of considerable importance for determining the shape and size of the Earth and represented an important step in the development of astronomy, geodetics and cartography. The measurement of the arc constituted a rare example of collaboration for a scientific cause between the scientists and rulers of a number of countries" (ER). The plates are mainly diagrams of scientific instruments employed by Struve. "In 1819, M. Struve, who was then director of the observatory of Dorpat, while engaged in the survey of Livonia, suggested to the University of Dorpat the desirableness of measuring the arc of the meridian included between the island of Hogland in the Gulf of Finland, and the town of Jacobstadt in the province of Courland. The sanction of the emperor having been obtained for the project, the operations were commenced and were finally completed in the year 1827…. In the same year in which M. Struve brought to a close the operations connected with this arc, General Tenner also completed measurement of the arc of the meridian included between Bristen in Courland, and Belin in the province of Grodno…. It became desirable to connect trigonometrically the two arcs together. This was effected in 1827-8, by M. Struve and General Tenner, independently of each other, and the results upon being transmitted separately in sealed letters to Bessel, were found to exhibit a most satisfying accordance" (Knight, p. 349). "From 1828 to 1831 Struve and Tenner had been engaged in joining their respective measurements of meridian arcs. The description of this operation was published in 1832; the full account of Struve's work having appeared in 1831 in the…Breitengradmessung" (Abbe, p. 375). Struve was a Danish-Norwegian astronomer who is best known for his studies of double stars, making micrometric measurements of 2714 of them from 1824-1837, and his work in the field of geodesy. He taught astronomy at the University of Dorpat for many years, before becoming director of the Central Observatory in Pulkova, Russia, in 1839. "In addition to his teaching, Struve's research was also significant in a number of areas, notably observation of double stars; determination of stellar parallaxes and distribution of stars in space; observation of planets, the moon, comets, and auroras; meridian measurements; statistical techniques; and the design and refinement of astronomical and geodetic instruments" (DSB, vol. XIII, p. 109). "At Pulkova, he determined anew the constant of aberration, but was chiefly occupied in working out the results of former years' work and in the completion of the geodetic operations in which he had been engaged during the greater part of his life. He had commenced them with a survey of Livonia (1816-19), which was followed by the measurement of an arc of meridian of over 34 in the Baltic provinces of Russia" ("Struve," Encyclopaedia Britannica, p. 641). Geodesie, Kanaalweg 4, Delft," a library at Delft University of Technology, and "Sterrewacht Zonnenburg, Utrecht," the Sonnenborgh Observ [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Le Rouge et le Noir. Chronique du XIXe siècle

      A. Levavasseur, Paris 1831 - A Fine copy of Stendhal's masterpiece and one of the major literary works of 19th century France. A lovely copy, entirely untrimmed (pages 181 x 140 mm), with the original wrappers bound in to each volume (including the spine panels). Elegantly bound by Edouard Pagnant of Paris (1852-1916) in green half-morocco over marbled boards, spine with gilt titles and decorated columns, marbled end papers. Internal contents clean and fresh, quite rare and desireable with the original printed wrappers. Upper wrapper and titles with vignettes of Henry Monnier, engraved by Porret. Volume one vignette shows Julien Sorel appearing to Madame de Renal near a confessional; volume two shows Mathilde de La Mole holding the head of Julien Sorel.Stendhal's surprisingly modern bildungsroman about the rise and fall of the romantic Julian Sorel, who attempts to climb the rungs of French society and surpass the expectations of his modest, rural upbringing. The novel is not only an exploration of Julian's own psychological and spiritual struggles but also a satire of the clergy and French society in general. "The Red and The Black, like much of Stendhal's work, was not appreciated in his own day. It was only after Stendhal's death that critics began to realize what a revolutionary stylist he was. He's currently credited as one of the fathers of psychological realism due to the space he devotes to his characters' inner lives. "Stendhal's mind was of the first order? he wrote his two novels, which so few people have read, in a spirit of fearless liberty." (Joseph Conrad). Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Mention of second edition, corrected and augmented. The first one has been published without an author's name and has only received a confidential print, which is why it is found only very rarely. Smooth back decorated with 2 irons and a large romantic central iron mirror, nets and wheels. Title piece in morocco burgundy. Traces of friction in caps and corners. Nice copy. Commander Fernel (1793-1854) was attached to the staff of the army of Africa, he tells us in this book with a legitimist tendency the story of the capture of Algiers. This campaign, as we know, will have considerable repercussions on the French presence in North Africa. 189pp. 32pp. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Letter Signed to 'The Revd. Mr. Jones', from Taplow Nr. Maidenhead, 4 June 1831. 'I thank you for the interesting communication you have been so obliging as to bring for me ...'

1831 41 lines on 3pp. 4to, integral address leaf to the recipient 'to the care of T. Pringle Esq.'; old folds, a few marginal tears.A long letter signed by Wilberforce but written in a secretarial hand, to Jones, an American, who wished to be employed by the Church Missionary Society as a missionary to Hayti. Wilberforce thanks Jones 'for the interesting communications you have been so obliging as to bring for me. Let me beg you to put the printed works you have brought over, into the hands of Mr Pringle (Secretary to the Anti-Slavery Society) ... Mr Pringle confirms the statement in Mr Peter Williams's letter ... It is manifest and undeniable that Hayti is in a situation which the labors of a missionary at once duly zealous and prudent, might be the greatest of all blessings to that most interesting community ...' Wilberforce suggests that Jones contact members of the committee of the Society and that he, Wilberforce, will 'mention you to two or three friends of my own on that Body ...' After Wilberforce's signature, a PS reports that 'A complaint in my eyes obliges me to write to you by another hand'.William Wilberforce, the anti-slavery campaigner, was probably staying with Pascoe Grenfell, a 'zealous supporter', at his country seat at Taplow. Thomas Pringle was Secretary to the Anti-Slavery Society (residing at 7 Solly Terrace, Claremont Square, Glasgow, as written faintly in pencil on the address leaf). Peter Williams was the black Episcopalian minister from Harlem, who advocated emigration from America and at the time of this letter recommended Haiti as a place of settlement for black Americans. It is not known if Jones achieved his goal. PLEASE NOTE: For customers within the UK and the EU, this item is subject to VAT.

She contributed several plates to Roscoe's Monandrian Plants of the Order Scitamae (1824-1829) before publishing Floral Illustrations of the Seasons (1829-31), her book of detailed botanical drawings engraved by Havell. Kramer notes that the work is one of very few Victorian English botanical books where a female illustrator/author is named on the title. Roscoe's book was produced in a very small edition at the time that Robert Havell was deeply involved in the production of Audubon's Birds of America (1827-1838), and this exquisite work demonstrates his preeminence as a natural history engraver. Nissen BBI 1676; Dunthorne 236; Great Flower Books 133; Stafleu & Cowan IV:882; cf. Kramer, Women of Flowers, p. 49. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Le Rouge et le Noir. Chronique du XIXe siècle

Paris: A. Levavasseur, 1831. A Fine copy of Stendhal's masterpiece and one of the major literary works of 19th century France. Volume one vignette shows Julien Sorel appearing to Madame de Renal near a confessional; volume two shows Mathilde de La Mole holding the head of Julien Sorel. Stendhal's surprisingly modern bildungsroman about the rise and fall of the romantic Julian Sorel, who attempts to climb the rungs of French society and surpass the expectations of his modest, rural upbringing. "Stendhal's mind was of the first order... he wrote his two novels, which so few people have read, in a spirit of fearless liberty." (Joseph Conrad). Fine. Fine
