Zoku Ganka kinno [trans.: Causes, Diagnoses, and Treatments of Eye Diseases, Second Series]. Woodcut illus. in the text (several are color printed). Two vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. Edo: 1837.First edition. "In 1831 Fuichi or Shinichi or Toshiatsu Honjo (died 1846) published his Ganka kinno, a Japanese work in four volumes comparing the theory and practice of Chinese and European (Dutch) ophthalmological methods. After the usual series of commendatory prefaces, that book presented the gross anatomy of the eye with particular reference to the ocular muscles and the optic nerve; following that, the description of the geometrical optics of the eye: the projection of an external object on the retina; and the degree or range of normal vision, from myopia to hyperopia, in relation to the curvature of the crystalline lens. All of these descriptions were illustrated with colored woodblock prints. Of unique interest is an illustration showing the different appearances of the doko ('apple of the eye' = the pupil) in the successive stages in the making of artificial eyes. Volumes 1 and 2 presented diseases or abnormal conditions of the external or accessory structures of the eye (e.g. the eyelids) and treated of trauma, trachoma and acute conjunctivitis. Volume 3 elaborated the diseases and pathology of the internal eye (i.e. the eyeball). Volume 4 consisted entirely of prescriptions for the treatment of eye diseases. At that time in Japan ophthalmological science was a combination or admixture of Chinese and Dutch knowledge, and the Ganka kinno was considered the best monograph on that practice..."A continuation of that work by Fuichi Honjo appeared in 1837 under the title Zoku ganka kinno, in two volumes. That was a sort of clinical section to the earlier work. A series of wood-block illustrations, some in color, showed a variety of ophthalmological instruments, with textual descriptions of their use, and pictures of their application. For example, an instrument for applying medicine to the eye was made by tying a bag containing the medicine around the end of a wooden handle, and used by squeezing it against the eye with the head tilted backward. An eye-dropper, syringes, and a magnifying glass for use by the oculist were figured. Ophthalmological instruments consisted of various kinds of spoons, tubes, loops, forceps, scissors, needles, lances, knives, and clamps. Illustrations of each of these are shown. Retractors for the eyelids were of bamboo or of copper. Metallic instruments (cautery irons) to be heated in a charcoal fire were shown, with an illustration of them in use. Other pictures showed the use of special needles in the treatment of cataract."-Mestler, A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books With Miscellaneous Notes on Early Medicine in Japan. Part IV. Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Dentistry, pp. 334-35.Honjo was one of the most prominent physicians in Japan and was well-known as an educator familiar with Chinese, Western, and Japanese medicine. He worked very closely with P.F. von Siebold. The present book was the standard work on ophthalmology in Japan throughout the 19th century.Fine set.

Autograph letter signed

London, 1831. Heurteloup, Charles L. S., Baron (1793-1864). Autograph letter signed to an unidentified correspondent. London, 7 September 1831. 1 page. 219 x 185 mm. Traces of former mounting present, but very good. From the inventor of the "perce-pierre" lithotrite for crushing stones in the bladder (see Garrison-Morton 4290), presenting a copy of his Cases of Lithotrity, or Examples of the Stone Cured without Incision (1831) to the president and members of the Royal College of Surgeons, to whom he had dedicated the work. The operation of lithotrity, in which an instrument is inserted into the bladder through the urethra to pulverize bladder calculi, marks the beginning of minimally invasive surgery. The operation was introduced by Jean Civiale in 1826, but Heurteloup's method was superior. He moved to London in 1829, and was the first to perform lithotrity in Great Britain.         Map of the County Palatine of Chester from an actual Survey by A. Bryant. In the Years 1829, 1830 and 1831.

Published by A. Bryant, 27 Grt. Ormond Street, May 3rd, 1831., London, - Andrew Bryant?Äôs large-scale map of Cheshire Large-scale engraved map, in two sections, fine original full-wash colour, dissected and mounted on linen, calligraphic title, key lower left, map edged in green silk, housed within original red morocco slipcase, lettered in gilt. Andrew Bryant?Äôs large-scale map of Cheshire.Between 1822 and 1835 Andrew Bryant surveyed thirteen English counties, much in the manner of the Greenwood brothers, though without the latters' extreme detail. With their swash lettering, vignette views and meticulous engraving there was a great similarity about their respective output. Of the six counties covered by both cartographers, in five instances they were both working in the field at the same time, even with the much talked about animosity between the Greenwoods and Bryant, it is most likely that they shared information. The map, like the Greenwoods', is very detailed, and shows boundaries of the counties, hundreds and parishes, churches and chapels, castles and quarries, farmhouses and gentlemen?Äôs seats, heaths and common land, woods, parliamentary representatives, and distances between towns. To the bottom right of the map is a fine engraving of Chester Cathedral. The map is on a scale of 1 1/4 inches to the mile. The maps by Bryant are appreciably scarcer than those of the Greenwoods.Scale: 1.25 inches to the statute mile. 1340 by 1610mm. (52.75 by 63.5 inches).

Manuscript on paper, in Latin. "De executiva et inspectiva ecclesiae potestatibus disputatio.

[Rome?, ca. 1831?44?]. Folio (32 cm; 12.5"). [7] ff., 371 pp.. Gregory XVI (pope, 1831?46) was a fervent ultramontanist and so sought to strengthen the papal prerogatives and powers, and through them the religious and political authority of his papacy. This manuscript on the => executive and investigative powers of the Church, a topic dear to his heart, dovetails nicely with ultramontanism and was dedicated to him. Signed by Tagliaferri at the end of the dedication, it is written in a single easy-to-read hand on a single stock of high quality wove paper with a watermark bearing the date of 1822.    => An extended text apparently unpublished, at least separately.    Provenance: Gilt supra-libros of Pope Gregory XVI. Circa 1930 acquired by John Howell, bookseller in San Francisco, and added to his personal library (bookplate on front pastedown). He later sold it to the Pacific School of Religion (bookplate on front pastedown; stamps).    Binding: Full vellum over boards, round spine, no raised bands; spine richly gilt using a variety of tools. Papal coat of arms in the center of each board. All edges gilt. Binding as above, spine darkened as are the boards, front joint expertly repaired; gilt faded but still attractive and "legible." Small stamp on a blank page and another in upper margin of the first page of the dedication; charge pocket on rear pastedown. => An impressively bound copy of an interesting and very nicely produced manuscript.

Théorie des ressemblances, ou essai philosophique sur les moyens de déterminer les dispositions physiques et morales des animaux, d'après les analogies de formes, de robes et de couleurs.

Paris, Treutel et Würtz, 1831; Fournier, 1844. Two volumes in two. Large 4to (24.0 x 31.3 cm; 26.6 x 35.1 cm). Volume I (1831): Half title, title page, 133 pp. 21 chromolithographed plates, finished by hand [1-20 numbered in the accompanying text, one not numbered]; Volume 3 (1844): xxiv, 207 pp., three hand-coloured plates. Similar, later blind quarter paper over original printed boards.l A peculiar work, being one of the first to make a deeper study of resemblances in natural history. Several observations made by Da Gama actually indicate true cases of mimicry, or true synapomorphies, but others are entirely coincidental similarities (e.g. the colours present in a bird, and in a flower). Apparently, Da Gama had a keen interest in entomology and ornithology, as most plates contain insects and, especially, birds. According to the title, the first volume has 20 plates, but actually there are 21. Inscribed by the author on the half title verso (dedication to "le Docteur Pugès"). A second volume appeared in 1836, and a fourth in 1858. These are not present in this set. Fore edges uncut. Old, ornithological library stamp on half title of volume 1, and front free endpaper recto of volume 3. Board rather rubbed, especially at the edges, and a bit soiled and worn. Some age-toning to a few plates ofwhich a few more heavy, otherwise clean. In all, good copies of this very rare work. Nissen ZBI, 1472.
