History of the American Baptist African & Haytien Missions - For the Use of Sabbath Schools - By the Author of Philip Everhard, or History of the Baptist Indian Missions

Massachusetts Sabbath School Union, Boston 1831 - History of the American Baptist African & Haytien Missions - For the Use of Sabbath Schools - By the Author of Philip Everhard, or History of the Baptist Indian Missions. Scarce title. FIRST EDITION. Copyright 1831 by Christopher C. Dean. Revised by The Publishing Committee. Printed in 1831 by T.R. Marvin, for the Massachusetts Sabbath School Union, Depository, No. 47 Cornhill, Boston. No author listed. Newly published copies (& libraries) list Isaac McCoy as the author, though oddly his other attributed title (History of the Baptist Indian Missions) was first published 1840 & THIS copy clearly shows that title available in 1831 (on title page & also publisher's ads at rear, with "Philip Everhard" preceding the full title). "Isaac McCoy (1784-1846) was a Baptist missionary among the Native Americans in present-day Indiana, Michigan & Missouri. He was an advocate of Indian removal from the eastern United States, proposing an Indian state in what is now Kansas, Nebraska, & Oklahoma. He also played an instrumental role in the founding of Grand Rapids, Michigan & Kansas City, Missouri. In 1804 he married Christiana Polke (cousin of future President James K. Polk), whose family had been at the settlement at Kincheloe's Station in Kentucky when it was attacked, & her mother & four siblings were carried into captivity by the Shawnee before her birth, where they lived with the Indians for 13 months. Preacher, jailer, teacher, surveyor, & noted Baptist missionary to the Indians, McCoy traveled widely on the frontier promoting the Baptist church. With good intentions, McCoy began in 1823 to advocate that the Indian nations of the East be moved west 'beyond the frontiers of the White settlement'. In 1826, McCoy led his family deep into the frontier, establishing the Thomas Mission to the Odawa people, at what was to become Grand Rapids, Michigan. McCoy & his missionaries were the first European-American settlers in Niles & Grand Rapids. He hoped to be appointed as the government overseer of Indians. He lobbied in Washington & on the frontier seeking, unsuccessfully, for U.S. government recognition of the Indian lands as an official U.S. Territory. While in Missouri, a slave state, in 1835 McCoy purchased a female slave named Chainy. Opposed to slavery, he said he bought her to prevent her being separated from her husband & children by being sold through a slave market (he already owned her husband & children). In his will he provided for her children to be freed when each reached age 24. In 1840, McCoy wrote one of the earliest, most personally informed reports on the Midwestern Native American tribes, The History of Baptist Indian Missions. In 1842 he returned East to Louisville, Kentucky, where he directed the Baptist American Indian Mission Association. He wrote additional works on Indians & the missions." The rear three text pages contain printed poetry by William B. Tappan (1794-1849) & Rev. W. Croswell. Tappan was a pastor & evangelist; in 1822 became Superintendent of the American Sunday School Union; in 1849 ordained as a Congregational minister. The final leaf contains two pages of "Interesting Books for sale at the Depository of the Mass. Sabbath School Union" along with a list of publications, including aforementioned title by this same author (Philip Everhard, or History of the Baptist Indian Missions). Small thin volume (pocket-size). Bound in marbled paper-covered boards backed by black leather spine with gilt lettering & rules. NOTE: With contemporary ink name & date handwritten twice to early blanks: "John Bird Jr of Camden of Maine 1839" (likely from John Bird Co.). Covers loose (but holding), appears to lack leaf preceding title page (possibly a frontispiece?), small ink note to front pastedown, mild foxing throughout, some pencil scribbles to preliminary blank pages, handling wear, otherwise a clean tight hardcover copy. 70pp + 2pp ads. EXTREMELY RARE. Size: 15 x 9.5cm [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

It contains a number of Southern specialties, some appearing in print for the first time: Ochra Soup, Catfish Soup, Barbecued Shote (""This is the name given in the southern states to a fat young hog""), Curry of Catfish, Ochra and Tomatoes; Gumbo (""A West India Dish""), Chicken Pudding (""A Favourite Virginia Dish""), Field Peas, Apoquiniminc Cakes (a form of beaten biscuits).         Account of the steps taken, in England, with a view to the establishment of an academical

institution, or college, in New South Wales : and to demonstrate the practicability of effecting an extensive emigration of the industrious classes from the mother country to that colony. Sydney : Printed by Stephens and Stokes, 1831. Octavo, old marbled wrappers, pp 27, first 2 leaves with minor creasing flaws, light foxing, pale water stain to top edges; a good copy. A scarce pamphlet in which Lang puts forward his ambitious plan for the establishment of the Australian College in Sydney, to be based on the principles of the Scottish school system. The response was positive and the College was opened in 1831, the year the pamphlet was published. The College was successful for a little over two decades, until its closure in 1854. Lang includes in the pamphlet a list of items that have been donated for the use of pupils of the College, among them the complete works of Bentham, a gift of the famous philosopher and social reformer himself. There is also an early mention of Lang's involvement in a scheme for emigration to Australia.

With 2 small woodcuts and several letterpress tables in the text. Contemporary green half sheepskin.

Bibl. Mar. Espanola 1831; Palau 146856; Vindel 834; WorldCat (4 copies); not in Robertson, Bibl. of the Philippine Islands. First and only edition of a rare and important Spanish pilot guide giving detailed sailing instructions for a voyage from Cádiz (Spain) to the Philippines. It opens with an introductory chapter on winds, with two tables listing the hurricanes of the two hemispheres. The main text describes the route from Spain to the Cape of Good Hope, Amsterdam Island and Manila, giving the coordinates of all important islands and straits as well as descriptions of the relevant monsoons. Besides the Philippines it describes the Moluccas, Java, Lombok, Makassar, Dampier Strait, etc. It concludes with a table indicating the heights of several mountains. The author was first pilot of the Carrera de Indias and collected the material for the present volume on numerous voyages to the Philippines. He wrote his guide to fill a gap, since Spanish navigators still used extracts from Horsburgh's outdated Observations on the navigation of the eastern seas , first published in 1797. Some spotting, first flyleaf damaged, but the binding still sound with the corners and spine slightly rubbed.

        15 eigenh. Briefe m. Unterschrift.

Zus. 41 S., 8.

Two volumes in two. Large 4to (24.0 x 31.3 cm; 26.6 x 35.1 cm). Volume I (1831): Half title, title page, 133 pp. 21 chromolithographed plates, finished by hand [1-20 numbered in the accompanying text, one not numbered]; Volume 3 (1844): xxiv, 207 pp., three hand-coloured plates. Similar, later blind quarter paper over original printed boards.l A peculiar work, being one of the first to make a deeper study of resemblances in natural history. Several observations made by Da Gama actually indicate true cases of mimicry, or true synapomorphies, but others are entirely coincidental similarities (e.g. the colours present in a bird, and in a flower). Apparently, Da Gama had a keen interest in entomology and ornithology, as most plates contain insects and, especially, birds. According to the title, the first volume has 20 plates, but actually there are 21. Inscribed by the author on the half title verso (dedication to "le Docteur Pugès"). A second volume appeared in 1836, and a fourth in 1858. These are not present in this set. Fore edges uncut. Old, ornithological library stamp on half title of volume 1, and front free endpaper recto of volume 3. Board rather rubbed, especially at the edges, and a bit soiled and worn. Some age-toning to a few plates ofwhich a few more heavy, otherwise clean. In all, good copies of this very rare work. Nissen ZBI, 1472. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus.

London: Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley,, 1831. Revised, corrected, and illustrated with a new introduction, by the author. Octavo (157 x 98 mm). Contemporary green straight-grain morocco, titles and decoration to spine gilt in compartments, elaborate frame blocked in blind to covers within double ruled gilt frame, turn-ins and edges gilt, green coated endpapers. Engraved frontispiece and title page by Theodor von Holst. Contemporary ownership inscription to second free binder's blank. A little judicious repair to spine ends, hinges repaired, skilful paper restoration to rear free endpaper and p. v. Slight fading to rear board, minor rubbing to tips, light browning to plates, occasional marginal foxing; an excellent copy. Third and first illustrated edition. The third edition has Shelley's final definitive text and was the first truly popular edition of the novel. In it Mary Shelley incorporated most of the changes introduced by William Godwin into the 1823 second edition, as well as numerous other revisions, including an entirely new chapter, and the famous "Introduction" in which she elaborates the tale of the novel's genesis at the nocturnal storytelling session with Shelley, Byron and Polidori at the Villa Diodati. Mary lived for twenty more years, but the 1831 edition is her final text revision. The frontispiece is the first visual depiction of Frankenstein and the Creature. The novel was issued in Bentley's Standard Novels Series, with the final third of the text in the volume printing the first part of The Ghost-Seer, which is completed in the second volume and is more often than not missing.
