Dixon 95, Mellon/Snelgrove 34, Schwerdt l, p.23.Henry Alken worked in both oil and watercolor and was a skilled etcher. His earliest productions were published anonymously under the signature of "Ben Tallyho", but in 1816 he issued The Beauties & Defects in the Figure of the Horse comparatively delineated under his own name. From this date until about 1831, he produced many sets of etchings of sporting subjects mostly colored and sometimes humorous in character, the principal of which were: Humorous Specimens of Riding 1821, Symptoms of being amazed 1822, Symptoms of being amused 1822, Flowers from Nature 1823, A Touch at the Fine Arts 1824, and Ideas 1830. Besides these he published a series of books: Illustrations for Landscape Scenery and Scraps from the Sketch Book of Henry Alken in 1823, New Sketch Book in 1824, Sporting Scrap Book and Shakespeare's Seven Ages in 1827, Sporting Sketches and in 1831 and Sporting Notions (1831-1833), Illustrations to Popular Songs and Illustrations of Don Quixote, the latter engraved by John Christian Zeitter.Alken provided the plates picturing hunting, coaching, racing and steeplechasing for The National Sports of Great Britain (London, 1821). Alken, known as an avid sportsman,is best remembered for his hunting prints, many of which he engraved himself until the late 1830s. (Charles Lane British Racing Prints pp. 75–76). He created prints for the leading sporting printsellers such as S. and J. Fuller, Thomas McLean, and Rudolph Ackermann, and often collaborated with his friend the sporting journalist Charles James Apperley (1779–1843), also known as Nimrod. Nimrod's Life of a Sportsman, with 32 etchings by Alken, was published by Ackermann in 1842. In many of his etchings, Alken explored the comic side of riding and satirized the foibles of aristocrats, much in the tradition of other early 19th century caricaturists such as Thomas Rowlandson and James Gillray. One of his best known paintings, "The Belvoir Hunt: Jumping Into And Out Of A Lane", hangs in the Tate Britain and shows one of the oldest of the great foxhound packs in Leicestershire. A collection of his illustrations can be seen in the print department of the British Museum.

Papers on Conchology, by Isaac Lea. Read before the American Philosophical Society, 1830-1

Philadelphia: Printed for the Society, 1831. 3 parts in one (as issued), quarto. (10 3/4 x 8 5/8 inches). Collation: title (verso blank); [new series, vol.IV], pp.63-123 [1 blank page]; [new series, vol.III], pp.[259]- 284; [new series, vol.III], [403]-456; 3 leaves with 3pp. of early manuscript index. 28 hand-coloured plates (13 engraved, 2 etched, 13 lithographed), all by J. Drayton. Bound to style in contemporary half russia over marbled paper-covered boards, spine decoratively tooled in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. An apparently unrecorded American colour-plate book: a separate issue of Lea's earliest work on shells. All three parts of this work were also published in the Transactions of the American Philosophical Society, but this is the first example recorded that includes a unifying title for the three individual parts; the first example which shows that the three collected parts should now be considered as a separate work to be added to the slim canon of important early American colour-plate books. It is also interesting to note that the final part is published here in 1831, some years before it first appeared in volume IV of the Transactions which was published in 1834. This work is made up from three parts containing four papers which Isaac Lea read to the American Philosophical Society: the first on 2nd November 1827 a "Description of six new species of the Genus Unio..." (illustrated with four plates, and also issued as part of new series, volume III of the Transactions published in 1830); the second on 6th March 1829 a "Description of a new genus of the family Naïades, including eight species, four of which are new" (illustrated with eight plates, also issued in volume III, published in 1830); the third on 7th May 1830 "Observations on the Naïades, and descriptions of new species of that and other families" (with 16 plates, and also issued as part of new series, volume IV of the Transactions published in 1834); the fourth on 7th January 1831 "Description of a new genus of the family Melaniana of Lamarck" (also issued in volume IV, published in 1834). In the present work the three parts are bound out of chronological sequence, and there is also an additional unrelated article on plants bound in. Isaac Lea was elected to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia in 1815. His initial interest in Geology led him to the study of shells and Lea spent several years studying the Academy's collection of freshwater mollusks sent by Stephen Long from the Ohio River, as well as those collected by his brother Thomas Lea near Cincinnati. The first published result of these deliberations, "A Description of Six New Species of the Genus Unio", appeared in 1827 (and again in the present work) in the Transactions of the American Philosophical Society. Thereafter he devoted most of his scientific attention to Conchology. An acute and accurate observer, during a long lifetime Lea collected, identified, and described 1,842 species of some fifty genera of freshwater and terrestrial mollusks. It was Lea's "habit with his scientific papers to have 250 ... [copies] of each paper [printed, and to then have them ] bound ... up from time to time with title page and introduction as Observations on the Genus Unio (13 vols., 1827-1874), [these were then] ... presented ... to institutions and individuals." The present work appears to be an early stand-alone version of one of the earliest of these sammelbands, suggesting that it too was probably prepared by Lea himself, and printed "for the Society" in a small edition. The printers were probably Carey & Lea, for, in addition to his scientific endeavours, Lea was also a partner in this highly successful Philadelphia publishing house. The Carey and Lea connection would have facilitated Lea's access to the services of Philadelphia-based artist and engraver Joseph Drayton (1795-1856). The fine plates are all his work (four are from drawings by Lea himself, the rest are by and after Drayton), and include examples that are engraved, etched and lithographed; all are hand-coloured. Drayton had worked earlier on William Barton's A Flora of North America (1821-1823), on maps for Henry Tanner and subsequently served as one of the official artists on the Wilkes expedition before supervising the preparation of the plates for publication as well as providing a number of the images in the official report Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition (1845). Not mentioned in the standard bibliographies, but for the individual parts see Meisel II, pp.22 and 23; and N.P. Scudder's The Published writings of Isaac Lea (Washington: 1885) 9, 12, and 15.

        Marion de Lorme. Drame.

La Haye, G. Vervloet, 1831. Bound uncut w. the orig. front wrapper in a very nice private hcalf w. raised bands and gilt ornamentations on back (Petersen & Petersen). First blank leaf partly pasted on to inside of front wrapper. Apart from a bit of soiling to front wrapper, an excellent copy.. The rare Haag-edition, printed the same year as the first edition (Paris, 1831), which is "importante et rare" (Carteret I:403). "Marion de Lorme" is one of Hugo's early works and the first play to be accepted for production under Hugo's own name. The work portrays the French monarchy - a controversial topic at the time - and due to this portrayel being far from flattering, the work was censored and banned. Rare with the orig. wrapper and in uncut condition. On the verso of the first blank leaf is a contemporary handwritten inscription, stating that the previous owner (Ch. Deiters) met with Gustave Doré: "Ch. Deiters/ a. Utrecht en Hollande (pour 26 Stuver)/ ee XI Septbr 1833 (Hotel de Bellevue)/ vers les IX heures (au soir) - jaret/ a partir pour Bois et Duv (?); avec/ Gustave D." The book has a very impressive Danish provenance. It has been in the libraries of some of the most important Danish bookcollectors and bears the ex libri of K.F.         Porträtt av skulptören Bengt Erland Fogelberg (1786-1854).

Olja på duk. Signerad: "Sandberg". Skrivet a tergo på en etikett: "B. E. Fogelberg sign. Sandberg". 27,5 × 22,5 cm. Förgylld originalram. Proveniens: Troligen i konstnärens ägo till åtminstone 1831. | C. F. Lindberg, Stockholm 1898.

On a Peculiar Class of Acoustical Figures; and on certain Forms assumed by groups of particles upon vibrating elastic Surfaces,

PHOTOGRAPHS SENT ON REQUEST. First Edition, extract from: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, pp.299-340, Vol. 121. Quarto, numerous textual illustrations, very good copy, half calf gilt in period style, London: Richard Taylor, Royal Society, 1831. "In the spring of 1831 Faraday began to work with Charles (later Sir Charles) Wheatstone on the theory of sound, another vibrational phenomenon. He was particularly fascinated by the patterns (known as Chladni figures) formed in light powder spread on iron plates when these plates were thrown into vibration by a violin bow. Here was demonstrated the ability of a dynamic cause to create a static effect, something he was convinced happened in a current-carrying wire. He was even more impressed by the fact that such patterns could be induced in one plate by bowing another nearby. Such acoustic induction is apparently what lay behind his most famous experiment" (Britannica).

La Peau de Chagrin, roman philosophique. 2 Tomes.

Paris, Charles Gosselin, Urbain Canel, 1831. 8vo. Bound in one cont. hcloth w. gilt title to back. Re-backed w. dark cloth resembling the old, preserving almost all of the old back. Extremities a bit worn. Some brownspotting. On good paper, lacking half-titles but w. both leaves of errata and both frontispieces after Johannot, engr. by Porret, printed on fine China paper. All the errata from the errata-leaves have been hand-corrected in ink in a contemporary hand, which has also neatly written "Corrigé" after both lists of errata.. The very rare first edition of one of Balzac's main works, -one of his greatest novels and the one to establish his name as "M. de Balzac", which he used for all later publications. The novel quickly became highly popular, and was published in seven editions in Balzac's life-time. The second edition of the work appeared under the title "Romans et Contes philosophiques" merely a month and a half after the first edition; "Seconde édition, LA PEAU DE CHAGRIN étant considérée comme la premiere édition des "ROMANS ET CONTES PHILOSOPHIQUES." (Carteret I:62). The first edition appeared in August 1831, and the second in September 1831. The novel was thus a great success, and by June the following year (1832) three editions and 4500 copies of the book had been sold. The novel marks the actual literary debut of Balzac, and with this work he began the series that would come to occupy a separate and distinctive role in his "Comédie humaine", the "Études philosophiques". "La "Peau de chagrin" n'est pas vraiment en roman, mais un conte à demi-philosophique, à demi-fantastique, qui rapelle quelque peu la manière d'Hoffmann, lequel exerca les "Études philosophiques" une très grande influence" (Laffont-Bompiani, III:689). Balzac is one of the most celebrated French romantic and post-romantic writers, and this is one of his earliest and most famous works. Balzac is generally accepted as one of the main founders of realism in literature, and numerous great writers like Flaubert, Zola, Marcel Proust etc. have been influenced by his writings. "Tout ses livres, ne font qu'un livre; livre rivant, lumineux, profond, où l'on voit aller, et venir, et marcher, et se muvoir, avec je ne sais quoi d'effaré et de terrible, mêlé au réel, toute notre civilisation contemporaine[...] Balzac saisit corps à corps la société moderne. [...]" (Hugo about Balzac, see N.B.G. 4:330). With the ownership signature of the famous Danish poet, Niels Møller (1859-1941), dated "Marts 1891", who is primarily known for having translated several classical Greek works, among these Aristotle's Politics and Nicomachean Ethics, into Danish. He also translated Shakespeare and Browning. Carteret I:60
