London - James Duncan, 1830. London - James Duncan, 1830 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A relatively scarce edition of Martin Luther's Commentary on Saint Paul's Epistle to the Galatians. Martin Luther (1483 - 1546) was a German monk, priest, professor of theology and iconic figure of the Protestant Reformation. He strongly disputed the claim that freedom from God's punishment for sin could be purchased with money. He confronted indulgence salesman Johann Tetzel with his Ninety-Five Theses in 1517. His refusal to retract all of his writings at the demand of Pope Leo X in 1520 and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms in 1521 resulted in his excommunication by the pope and condemnation as an outlaw by the Emperor. Luther's writings circulated widely, reaching France, England, and Italy as early as 1519. Students thronged to Wittenberg to hear Luther speak. He published a short commentary on Galatians and his Work on the Psalms. This early part of Luther's career was one of his most creative and productive. Previous owner's ink inscription to front pastedown. Condition: In quarter cloth with paper covered boards. Externally, sound but with slight wear to extremities, some marks and stains to boards, minor loss to spine label and paper on boards. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places. Bright but with the odd spot and handling mark, heavier spotting and slight tidemarks to endpapers. Overall: GOOD.

Leopoldo Cicognara handwritten letter in Italian to his friend Alessandro Zanetti

[Italy] Leopoldo Cicognara 1830 - 26cm x 20.5cm (10-1/4 x 8 inches), Handwritten letter in Italian, 2 sided, was folded to 8.7cm x 10.5cm (3 x 4-1/8 inches) now flat. Letters from Leopoldo Cicognara do not often come to market and this 1830 letter to his friend Zanetti will present more insight into Cicognara. Some spotting and two right edge pieces of paper are missing affecting a couple of letter in the text, otherwise in good condition. Leopoldo Cicognara was born to a noble family in Ferrara, Italy. He was an Italian poet and an amateur artist, a patron of the arts, and one of the founding fathers of the discipline of Art History. He held various political and diplomatic posts and was also president of the Fine Arts Academy of Venice from 1808 to 1827. He possessed a magnificent library of over 5,000 works on painting, sculpture and architecture, as well as the relationship of these arts with literature, music, philosophy and other branches of knowledge. The Cicognara Library also contains biographies of artists and poets, treatises and manuals on various arts, studies of emblems, funeral rites, numismatics, Roman and Greek antiquities, and architectural dictionaries. It was acquired by the Vatican Library in 1824, under the pontificate of Leo XII, creating the Cicognara Collection. Cicognara had published a catalogue of his library in 1821 (ragionato Catalogo dei libri d'arte e d'Antichità posseduti Cicognara Conte dal), which has become an irreplaceable guide to art history sources from antiquity to the early nineteenth century. quoted from University of Navarra web site. Alessandro Zanetti: After Cicognara s death in 1834, his relative Alessandro Zanetti, with whom he had been closely associated, prepared a catalogue of his nielli and engravings, with a view to their sale, which was published at Venice in 1837, by the title of " Le Premier Siecle de la Calcographie." quoted from The Early Italian Prints in the British Museum, 1886 [Attributes: First Edition]
