Plate 107 Un Tal Lume Perpetuo Antico.

Paris 1830 - John Wilton-Ely plate 1002The watermark that is present is number 93 in John Wilton-Ely on page 1182 and is dated in the 1830s.Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and "like Callot makes great use of the swelling line" (Hind). He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom helped him in his work and after his death carried on his publications in Rome and Paris. They were Francesco (born 1748 or 1756; died 1810), Pietro (who lived till after 1807) and Laura (born 1750). His position in Rome and in Europe after 1760 was a prominent one. He was well-known figure to the wealthy English visitors in Rome and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. Most of his life was passed in Rome, etching, writing, publishing, and directing a workshop in which the restoration and sale of antiques played a considerable part.He was famous for his poetic views of Rome and also his fantastic imaginary interiors. His skills, allied to his deep knowledge of archaeology, provided the substance for his Vedute (Views), a series of 135 etchings of ancient and contemporary Rome, published from 1745 onwards, which established the popular mental image of the city. Vasi.et Ornamenti Antichi was a collection of 110 etchings documenting large sculptural vases, together with other antiquities excavated (and in some cases created) in Italy in the 18th century. The prints were initially separately issued and sold by Piranesi over a period of several years and subsequently collected in two folio volumes, each with its own title page, in 1778. They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi's own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons, colleagues, visitors and influential people. He believed absolutely in the supremacy of Roman over Greek architecture, an argument he expounded most forcefully in his Della magnificenza ed architettura dei Romani (On the Magnificence of Roman Architecture, 1761). his romanticized views and imaginary interiors had a profound effect on stage designers, painters of capricci such as Hubert Robert, and even writers: William Beckford, the author of the Gothic novel and Vathek . In the 20th century his imaginary interiors have been admired by the Surrealists . Reference: John Wilton-Ely. Giovanni Battista Piranesi: The Complete Etchings.         Italy A Poem

for T. Cadell, Jennings and Chaplin and E. Moxon, London 1830 - This is a stunning book with minimal flaws. There some foxing on the title page and preface, some rare foxing internally and some very light soil on the slip case. Otherwise this exquisite book is clean, tight, square with sharp corners and unmarked in an equally fine cloth covered, felt lined slip case. The end papers are covered in light orange silk. The gilt decorated, brown leather of the binding continues over the boards to frame the cloth covered paste downs. The brown leather is inlaid with marvelous gilt designs with small flowers. The motif continues on the spine where there are five raised bands. The 284, bright, clear pages (gilt edged at the top) are extensively illustrated in black and white and as the author says in the preface "With respect to the embellishments of this volume they require no praise of his. The two artists, who have contributed so much to give it value, would have done honor to any age or country." We have called it a first edition although the author in preface notes "Much of it was published as it was written on the spot. He has since revised it throughout, and added many stories from the old Chroniclers and many notes Illustrative of the manners, customs and superstitions. This referencing the 48 pages of notes at the rear. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Le Robinson Suisse, ou Journal d'un Pere de Famille Naufrage avec ses Enfans. In five volumes, bound as three

Paris - Arthus Bertrand 1830 - A wonderful copy of Isabelle de Montolieu's adaptation of Wyss's classic family adventure story. Translated out of the German by M. Viss. With a frontispiece to each title, and fouradditional plates, including one folding map. Complete in five volumes bound as three. The Swiss Family Robinson (German: Der Schweizerische Robinson) is a novel, first published in 1812, about a Swiss family shipwrecked in the East Indies en route to Port Jackson, Australia. Written by Swiss pastor Johann David Wyss and edited by his son Johann Rudolf Wyss, the novel was intended to teach his four sons about family values, good husbandry, the uses of the natural world and self-reliance. Wyss's attitude toward education is in line with the teachings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and many of the episodes have to do with Christian-oriented moral lessons such as frugality, husbandry, acceptance, cooperation, etc. It is said that Wyss was inspired by Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, but wanted to write a story from which his own children would learn, as the father in the story taught important lessons to his children. The Swiss Family Robinson has become one of the most popular books of all time. Isabelle de Montolieu (1751-1832) was a Swiss novelist and translator. She wrote in and translated to the French language. Montolieu penned a few original novels and over 100 volumes of translations. She wrote the first French translation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility (Raison et Sensibilit, ou Les Deux Manires d'Aimer) and Persuasion (La Famille Elliot, ou L'Ancienne Inclination). One of her translations to French - Johann David Wyss's German-language The Swiss Family Robinson (Le Robinson suisse, ou, Journal d'un pre de famille, naufrag avec ses enfans) - was adapted and expanded by her with original episodes more than once. Montolieu's French version is the literal source of still frequently reprinted English translations - for example William H. G. Kingston's 1879 version, one of the most popular in English over the years, is actually a translation of Montolieu's French adaptation. Condition: In half calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally sound although rubbed. Front hinge of volume I held by one cord only. Internally, firmly bound. Very bright, and generally clean aside from a few scattered spots. Copperplate ink signature to front pastedown of volume I. Small closed tear to folding map. Overall: VERY GOOD [Attributes: Hard Cover]

In 1823 he was moved to the diocese of Down and Connor, to which the diocese of Dromore was added in 1842. In collaboration with the Reverend George D'Oyly, Mant wrote a commentary on the whole Bible. Other works by him include the Psalms in an English Metrical Version (1842) and a History of the Church of Ireland (1839-1841; 2 vols.). His Ancient Hymns from the Roman Breviary (1837) was one of the earliest collections of translated Latin hymnody in English. Who was the Rev George D'Oyly and what part did he play in establishing King's? George D'Oyly, 1778-1846, was the Rector of Lambeth and a prime mover in the establishment of King's. His open letter to the Home Secretary, Sir Robert Peel, in February 1828, proposed a new university incorporating religious education. This led to the Freemasons' Hall meeting in June 1828 and the foundation of the College. D'Oyly subsequently played an important role in the Provisional Committee and College Council that oversaw the fundraising, construction and opening of the College for students in 1831.

        Manuscript Treatise on Housekeeping

England, 1830. Half Calf. Near Fine. 8vo. 23 by 19 cm. 98 numbered leaves, with writing entirely on the rectos. Unfilled leaves follow. Leaves are lined, with a neat, but not always easily legible cursive handwriting constituting the text. & & This pre-Victorian manuscript is a virtual Sun Tzu-like primer on running a household and its help. Directives are set forth, one after the other, with a supreme knowing-ness and confidence. “Never omit speaking to a servant on the first appearance of a fault”, “Guard against favoritism,” or “Insist on your servants attending the services of the Church,” are among the countless examples of this. Yet at the same time, the author is sensitive to balancing competing concerns, and she tersely navigates these dichotomies, as with her pronouncement: “To all mistresses I would say, be vigilant and watchful; but beware of ‘Suspicion’. & & The author does not merely set forth pointers without clarification or substantiation. So when she opines, “A kind word . . . will often effect more radical improvement than the severest rebuke,” she goes on to write, “The feelings of servants are keener than we give them credit for. . . ” & & The intended audience for all the instruction is the young bride of some means. That is why the management of staff is a paramount concern – more of the text is devoted to it than anything else. While the topic would not have been a pressing matter for the majority of young women, many of whom were themselves in service, it was a time that a much wider of swath of society did have domestic staff, including those squarely in the middle class. & & Other sections concentrate on budgeting, food preparation and the kitchen, china and glass, the water-closet, storage, health care, linens, washing. Throughout, the presentation is markedly concise. Even with the many inevitable overlaps among topics, the author manages to keep redundancy to a minimum.& & The work is not simple to categorize, for the points it contains range from broader philosophical approaches to some real nuts and bolts. Always, though, the work stays free of cerebral grandiosity on the one hand or of soporific nitty gritty details on the other. In terms of big picture points, the manuscript is not free of pedestrian, conventional attitudes, but often it surprises with fresh, rather progressive insights. She writes, for example, “The vexation and trouble so often experienced in the management of household domestics, benefits us seriously to inquire if the faults do not originate as much in the system we adopt towards them, as in the servants themselves." And she shows sympathy for the servants’ lot: “Domination is hard to bear, and equally galling to high and low; and if in enacting too severely, the scrupulous fulfilment of their duties, we wound the tender feelings of our menials, we “can not be surprised at their resenting it, in the only way which is open to them.” Another observation containing the wisdom of experience is that one “seldom gains time by hurrying them [servants]”. & & The more specific details pepper the text through and through. So, for instance, in the discussion of the care of guests, the author has what amounts to a checklist of things a maid should attend to, down to seeing that the towel horse is well supplied and that there are two sorts of soap. On in the cooking section, she warns against boiling vegetables with meats because “they mutually spoil each other.”& & As much as the author appears to have been a no nonsense, clear-eyed observer, she was no revolutionary, and so she could be susceptible to the prejudices and myopic viewpoints of the society she lived in. This aspect of the manual is at least as interesting to us as the more perceptive elements. And so, here and there slip in comments that suggest the author perceives servants as child-like, simple-minded and backward, as just one example. & & The primer's cohesive organization suggests the author harbored hopes of publication, although we are not aware that such a wish was granted. One can imagine that a well-meaning, and energetic, mother or aunt might put together her pearls of wisdom into writing just as her sheltered, innocent daughter or niece is about to undergo the trial by ordeal of running a household on her own for the first time, but that is most definitely not the case here, for the advice is simply too general, contingent and impersonal. Clearly, the writer did not have a specific reader in mind. & & Rather, we would suggest the likeliest author was the senior housekeeper of a very substantial household. Such a person would have had an official position, and one that carried real status. Generally, the housekeeper was at the pinnacle of the female staff, and stereotypically, would have been someone who ruled with a firm hand, as one could infer from this document that this author most definitely would have. It is easy to imagine someone in such a capacity having a clear conception of what it takes to run a more modest household, but not the reverse, meaning someone in charge of a small staff really grasping the demands of a grander residence. To have risen in the staff hierarchy, our presumed author would have been someone who had been around a long time and more than likely, witnessed many a workplace dynamic. It is only from such long, broad experience that she could write: “The code of laws which regulates the conduct of servants towards each other is little known or understood by those moving in the classes above them,” and follow up by developing upon that theme. To compose such a document as this required the sort of competence and perseverance certainly not common in a servant class that was still largely semi-literate at best, and few below housekeeper could have managed the undertaking. & & Rebacked, with raised bands and gilt decorative devices.

Carta Constitucional da Monarchia Portugueza, decretada e dada pelo Rei de Portugal e Algarves D. Pedro, Imperador do Brasil aos 29 de abril de 1826.

Angra, Na Imprensa do Governo, 1830. - Small typographical vignette on title page. 32 pp. 2 works bound in 1 volume. 8°, late twentieth-century sheep, spine gilt with raised bands in five compartments, gilt lettering in second and fourth compartments, ruled gilt border on covers, machine marbled endleaves, contemporary plain wrappers bound in. A bit of minor soiling to title page. Overall in very good condition, uncut at outer and lower edges. Contemporary ink doodling on wrappers. 2 works bound in 1 volume. ---- Rare edition of the @Carta Constitucional printed in the Açores. The Portuguese @Carta Constitucional, the second Portuguese constitution, was a fundamental constitutional text for nineteenth-century Portugal and one of the starting points of nineteenth-century Portuguese history. It was written and promulagated in Rio de Janeiro in 1826 by D. Pedro I, Emperor of Brazil, in his capacity as D. Pedro IV, King of Portugal. He then abdicated as ruler of Portugal in favor of his daughter, D. Maria II. Sir Charles Stuart, Lord Stuart d'Rothsey, was charged with bringing the 1826 Charter from Brazil to Portugal in the year of its promulgation. Abrogated by D. Miguel in 1828, it was put back into force after the victory of the liberals under D. Pedro in August 1834, remaining the supreme law of the land until September 10, 1836. Closely resembling the 1824 Brazilian constitution, also in large part written by D. Pedro, it was the rallying point of the liberal cause that eventually resulted in the triumph of D. Pedro over his brother, the absolutist D. Miguel, and the ascension to the throne of D. Pedro's daughter as D. Maria II. Finally, under Costa Cabral, it was re-instituted on February 10, 1842, and remained the Portuguese constitution until the fall of the monarchy in 1910. Though liberal in its day, it was more conservative than the first Portuguese constitution of 1822 or the third Portuguese constitution of 1838.---- Canto 404. Not in Innocêncio. Not located in OCLC.       Ansbach: Doll, 1830. Rare War Board-Game Book <p>Aretin, Wilhelm, Freiherr von. Strategonon. Versuch die Kriegf¸hrung durch ein Spiel anschaulich darzustellen. . . . 8vo. xxxv, [1], 145, [3]pp. 3 hand-colored folding plates, 1 folding lithographed table, 4 folding letterpress tables. Ansbach: Dollfuss, 1830. 209 x 115 mm. Old marbled boards, slightly rubbed & stained. Old stamps on title, light browning, a little foxing. Very good copy. </p><p>First Edition. Very rare, with only one location in NUC (1983 fiche catalog, showing only the Cleveland Public Library copy). Describes what the author considers the most true-to-life war board-game yet published, which he believes especially appropriate for advanced cadets, who can learn to be good officers from playing it. Baron von Aretin, a lieutenant in the royal Bavarian light cavalry (second regiment, to be precise), belonged to a family distinguished in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for public service (see NBG). He writes in his introduction that he has based his war game on one devised in 1803 by his uncle Baron Georg von Aretin, which was never published. Von Aretin gives an overview and critique of war board-games from the seventeenth century, especially those of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. These games, derived from the rules and playing board of chess, have in recent times come closer to a true-to-life simulation of war situations, but are on account of lack of verisimilitude, or cumbersomeness of the board, or length of time needed to play, inferior to the game he describes in his book. Von Aretin has factored into his game natural troop movements, considerations of equipment, terrain and time of year, the working of various weapons, supplies, rules, headquarters and commanders, desertion, sieges, destruction of bridges, naval warfare, etc. The three folding hand-colored plates with approx. fifty figures show the game pieces; the five folding tables give data on the march of troops and the working of weapons in different contexts. </p>

GREAT BRITAIN ILLUSTRATED. a series of original views from drawings by William Westall, A.R.A.engraved by.Edward fFnden.

London: Charles Tilt, 1830. - 8 1/2 x 10 3/4. Extra engraved title, vi, 118 pages + 59 plates showing 118 views. Fine contemporary embossed plaque binding of red morocco. The central emblem of Aurora in her chariot is surrounded by elaborate, dense floriate designs and a border; spine also embossed, with gilt tile at head. The binding is signed in the design; and there's an oval ticket at rear. Engraved title & last plate foxed, occasional light foxing elsewhere. The binding has minor rubbing at extremities, but is a fine, handsome, and very early example of Remnant & Edmonds' embossed plaques. In these bindings, also known as "Relievo leather," the highly polished morocco is embossed in a special, heavy press before the book is bound. Sharp, detailed impressions are achieved in a with a die and a counter-die. Remnant & Edmonds were award a Prize Medal for them at the Great Exhibition f 1851. These bindings allude to the 15th & 16th century embossed ones, as part of the 19th c. gothic revival. The bindings on the American National Portrait Gallery (see below) are an almost exact reproduction--much reduced- of this binding. Only the name "Remnant & Edmonds, and two figures in the medallion, and have been omitted. It seems likely the same die engraver was responsible for both. The large arabesque design can be seen in on their 1830 Album, illustrated in McLean Victorian Publishers' Book-Bindings in Cloth & Leather, p. 21. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Great Britain Illustrated:

London: Charles Tilt, 1830 The Large Paper Copy. In contemporary quarter maroon morocco, green marbled cloth, corners and edges a little bumped and worn. Spine has title in gilt, edges and joints a little worn. Internally, yellow endpapers, hinges strengthened, worm holes to bottom corner edges for first few pages resulting in some marginal paper loss, with the engraved additional title page, 59 leaves of plates, each with 2 views, tissue guards, occasional foxing, (vi), 118 pp. The uncommon large paper copy, 15*10.75 ins. (Avery 1096. Allibone 2654) Title continues: A Series of Original Views from Drawings By William Westall. Engraved By and Under the Direction of Edward Finden with Descriptions By Thomas Moule. Westall, painter, engraver, and lithographer, was always interested in the mechanics of print work. His lithographs of London and the aquatints for Ackermann of the Thames, the universities, and public schools are highly regarded. The steel-engravings for Great Britain Illustrated, first published in parts by Charles Tilt, brought topographical prints to a wide audience. A number of Westall&#39;s Indian views appeared as aquatints in Robert Grindlay&#39;s Scenery, Costumes and Architecture Chiefly on the Western Side of India, and his work appeared in the new print format patented by George Baxter (for example, The Pictorial Album, or, Cabinet of Paintings, for the Year, 1837 - for a full Bio see ODNB)

Chroniques Francoises de Jacques Gondar Clerc. Publiee par F. Michel. Suivie de Recherches sur le Style par Charles Nodier

Paris: Louis Janet, 1830. First Edition. Velvet on Boards. Full Morocco Slipcase. Near Fine. 12mo. 16.5 by 10.5 cm. clvii, 44, [1] pp. With five hand-colored and illuminated plates, including title, plus illuminated devices and decoration elsewhere. While the plates are printed, the coloring and illumination is such that it is a fine simularcrum of manuscript illumination. This work is in fact a literary hoax, simulating a Medieval Romance but in fact penned by Michel and promoted by the extensive notes and annotations that follow the chronicles. The leaves are a light vellum, and this edition was issued with luxuriant, unusual bindings such as the navy blue velvet of this one.
