A' Marosvasarhelyt 1829-be nyomtatott Arithemetika Elejének részint röviditett, reszint bovitett, általán jobbitott, 's tisztáltabb kiadásaMarosvasarhely: Kali Simon, 1843. First edition.

An exceptionally fine copy, in the original boards, of Bolyai's work on the foundations of mathematics, and the last of the great works of Farkas Bolyai. It is in part based on the author's <i>Az arithmethica eleje</i> published in 1830 and on the second volume (the first volume being on geometry) of his magnum opus the <i>Tentamen juventutem studiosam elementa matheseos purae</i>, 1832-33, to which it frequently refers. This work enlarges and extends Bolyai's investigations into the principles of mathematics. Farkas Bolyai (1775-1856) was a close friend of Gauss and regarded by the latter as the only man who fully understood Gauss' metaphysics of mathematics. "He can be taken as a precursor of Gottlob Frege, Pasch, and Georg Cantor; but, as with many pioneers, he did not enjoy the credit that accrued to those that followed him" (DSB). He had worked on the parallel postulate and the possibilities of a non-Euclidean geometry from his earliest days as a mathematician in Göttingen, and had corresponded with Gauss on the subject, even sending him a manuscript entitled <i>Theoria parallelarum</i>, but it was his son János who was to achieve the breakthrough.<br/> The text refers frequently to Gauss and Lagrange, along with other mathematicians such as Maclaurin and Taylor.<br/> Bolyai began this work in 1829 but only a short introduction and an excerpt were printed (in 1830) because he was under pressure with preparing for publication the <i>Tentamen</i>. At the time when this work was published, Bolyai was in despair as neither his son Janos nor he himself had received any recognition. He desperately wrote to Gauss (January 18th, 1848): 'Some years ago I have published another attempt [the present work] in Hungarian but without any results - Mathematics does not grow in this "China".' Only one more letter to Gauss followed (February 6th 1853) before Bolyai's death in 1856.. 8vo (207x123 mm), pp. xliv, 386, with two folding lithographed plates on blue paper, one with six folding slips with grey and pink wash colouring; some very occasional and light foxing, a very fine copy, entirely unrestored in original blue boards with paper label to spine. Very rare

Book of Mormon: An account written by the hand of Mormon, upon Plates taken from the Plates of Nephi

Palmyra, NY: E.B. Grandin, 1830. First Edition. 588pp. Octavo [19 cm]. Rebound in an attractive full brown striated calf with raised bands and the title gilt stamped on the backstrip. New pastedowns and endsheets. Textblock is complete including a front and rear free blank. A nicely rebound copy of this important work. Printed in an edition of five thousand copies by Egbert B. Grandin in upstate New York. Printing took place between August 1829 and March 1830, in the Grandin building that Egbert rented from his brother, Philip. Before the 1830 edition of the Book of Mormon was officially published, sections were being printed in a local Palmyra newspaper called The Reflector. The newspaper was run by Abner Cole who used the pseudonym "Obediah Dogberry." After some discussion, Joseph Smith finally convinced Cole to stop his piracy of the book. This "preprinting" of excerpts from the book caused non-Mormons some concern about the doctrines of the Mormon church, and thus, began the initial persecution of the Mormons themselves. The 1830 first edition book of Mormon includes many variant copies with printing errors in pagination and spelling. Part of the reason for these variants may be explained by the fact that Joseph Smith used several scribes when writing the book. The scribes included: his wife, Emma Hale Smith, his brother-in-law, Reuben Hale, Martin Harris and Oliver Cowdery. According to Peter Crawley "…it is possible that very few copies of the book exist which are entirely identical." A highly sought after book by historical, religious and Mormon book collectors alike.         Papers Explanatory of the Charges brought against Lieut. Gen. Darling, by William Charles Wentworth, Esq. Papers Explanatory of the Charges brought against Lieut. Gen. Darling, by William Charles Wentworth, Esq

London: House of Commons, 1830. Foolscap quarto, 60pp. and docket title leaf, an excellent copy (uncut and not folded) in a blue folding quarter cloth protective case with ribbon ties. Freedom of the Press in Sydney. A gritty insight into colonial politics of the 1820s, pitting individual liberty and the freedom of the press against the power of Governor Ralph Darling. As this publication records, William Charles Wentworth had attacked Darling for his contentious treatment of two soldiers of the New South Wales regiment, Sudds and Thompson. The argument was conducted largely in the pages of Wentworth's Australian newspaper, to which Darling responded with attempts to further curb the freedom of the press, imposing stamp duties on Sydney newspapers, and bringing libel charges against private citizens. These actions polarised the judiciary against the governor, and Darling came to believe the judges acted against him in collusion with Wentworth. This report of 1830 ostensibly published all of the relevant documents, however, the Colonial Office was partial to Darling's case and edited the documents in a manner that seriously misrepresented the affair, omitting a crucial letter from Wentworth to Sir George Murray. When this omission was revealed the Colonial Office was forced to publish the entire text of the Wentworth impeachment (issued in the parliamentary papers of 1832). Some years later in 1835 Darling was cleared of Wentworth's charges by a Select Committee of the House of Commons.

De cellulis antherarum fibrosis nec non de granorum pollinarium formis commentatio phytotomica

[Privately published by] J.D. Grueson, Vratislaviae (i.e. Wrocklaw, Poland) 1830 - 4to. 58 pp. COMPLETE with 18 lithographic plates. Original nineteenth-century boards, printed label on upper cover. Some minor foxing, but overall in excellent antiquarian condition, completely unsophisticated, with many gatherings unopened. Important and very early work on plant pollens by the brilliant Bohemian polymath Jan Evangelista Purkinje (1787-1869), illustrated with 18 full-page lithographs. According to DSB, Purkinje was inspired by his colleague A.W. Henschel, and "studied plant structures, mainly the elastic fibrous cells of the anthers and the form of the pollen and spores in relation to the mechanism of their dispersion. In his extensive comparative study, combining anatomy with physiology, he distinguished structural types, and drew attention to mechanical factors and the role of cells in the differentiation of plant tissues. His dynamic concept was recognized mainly by French botanists." Purkinje is justly considered to be a pioneer experimental physiologist whose investigations in the fields of histology, embryology, and pharmacology helped create a modern understanding of the eye and vision, brain and heart function, mammalian reproduction, and the composition of cells.
