The Hudson Highlands from West Point; Oil Painting after Robert Weir

New York:. ca. 1830.. An unsigned oil painting on canvas of the Hudson Highlands on a sunny summer's day, looking north from West Point, and based on a work by Robert W. Weir titled 'View of the Hudson Highlands from West Point'. Robert Walter Weir (1803 - 1889) was a member of the Hudson River School of Art. Elected to the National Academy of Design in 1829, he also served as professor of drawing at West Point from the 1830's to the 1870's. His better known works include 'The Embarkation of the Pilgrims (at the rotunda of the US Capitol at Washington, DC) and 'Landing of Hendrik Hudson'. The view in this oil painting, by an unknown artist, is taken from Trophy Point looking north up the Hudson, with Cold Spring buildings on the eastern shore, and "Undercliff" prominently visible above the town. Undercliff was built by John Hamilton, son of Alexander Hamilton, who originally intended to use it as a summer residence but instead sold it to the poet, Gen. George P. Morris, who used it as his summer home from 1830 until his death in 1864. In the foreground appears a seated cadet and young lady wearing a red shawl and bonnet. Sailing ships glide up and down the river, their sails reflected on its surface. On the verso of the canvas is stamped "Prepared by Edward Dechaux, New York". Dechaux was a New York City firm active in the 1830s, known as a "color man"; this firm prepared canvases for artists through a time consuming process of sizing, adding layers of a solid color ground, and then drying thoroughly, a process that saved painters much time and effort. Weir worked with James Smillie, an eminent print and bank note engraver, producing fine copper engraved prints for the New York Mirror magazine. There is an engraving of the same view which appeared in the New York Mirror (1836), engraved by Smillie. A small roughly triangular chip, approximately 3/8" at the upper left side, in a portion of blue sky. Craquelure visible on the surface. The painting approx. 24 x 18", framed in the original gilt wooden frame, with a paper label on the top edge "The Hudson Highlands from West Point", 29 x 23". Overall, very nice condition.

Autograph Manuscript fragment of "Emelian the Fool"

N.p [St. Petersburg?], 1830. 2 pp. pen and ink on 2 leaves of blue paper. 8vo. Worn, with small closed tears at margins. "Emeilan the Fool" The working manuscript, with deletions and corrections, of the first two pages of George Borrow's translation of the Russian folk tale "Emelian the Fool." As the text differs substantially from the printed version, this is likely one of Borrow's earlier attempts at a translation, perhaps begun in St. Petersburg while he was overseeing a printing of the New Testament into Manchu. Collie and Fraser suppose that the first drafts of Borrow's Russian translations were "written while he was in St. Petersburg, though they were revised later, probably for the proposed publication announced in 1857 in the advertisements at the end of The Romany Rye" (p. 102). "Emelian" was first published in Once a Week, VI, 8 March 1862, and reprinted by T.J. Wise and included in the Avon Booklet II, 1904 and again as a separate publication by Wise in 1913 in an edition of 30. Collie and Fraser list two manuscripts of the story (in the British Library and Worcester), both incomplete. Collie & Fraser E.9 (for first separate publication)

Platycercus Pileatus. Red-capped Parrakeet. Female. In the Possession of the Right Hon. Lord Stanley

London.. No date. [1830- 1832].. Lithograph, handcolored, sheet size 21 x 13 3/4 inches (image approx. 16 x 11 inches). Matburn to outside edge of sheet, area of abrasion to paper at upper right corner (well outside image), couple of short tears at upper paper edge, very light scattered foxing. Overall image area is clean and bright, making a beautiful display. An exquisite image by the 19th century master of ornithological art, Edward Lear (1812-1888). This lithograph was drawn and lithographed by Lear for his first publication "Illustrations of the family of Psittacidae, or parrots: the greater part of them species hitherto unfigured," which appeared in parts between 1830 and 1832, limited to a print run of 175. Susan Hyman (Edward Lear's Birds) writes that this work "set new standards in ornithological publishing. Lear was the first to choose the large folio size which became general for later books;..Lear was also the first bird artist to work from living examples whenever possible and the first to produce his own lithographs. The devotion of an entire book to one family of birds was another innovation." Extraordinarily, Lear was less than 20 years old when he produced this work, which was printed by the fine lithographic printer Charles Hullmandel. .

Signed twice by the author, "Francisco De Laiglesia Y Darrac", dated "Madrid 24 Mayo de 1830". Bookplate on pastedown of the noted Spanish collector José Gallart Folch. Highly important manuscript, being the author's autograph copy - possibly for presentation to the dedicatee (the King of Spain). Darrac's groundbreaking treatise on the admixture of Arabian bloodlines to the Spanish horse was subsequently accepted by the King and printed 'by Royal decree' in the following year, 1831. "To assure that Spain would have ready supply of quality horses and mules, the recommendations first purposed by Francisco Laiglesia Y Darrac in his brilliant 1831 book Memoria sobre la cria caballar en Espana - causas del aniquilamiento de nuestros caballos (Thesis on Horse Breading in Spain- Causes of the Annihilation of Our Horses) were finally adopted. Laiglesia might well be called the father of the Arabian horse of Spain, because he was the first to advocate the importation of a large group of desert-bred stallions and mares as the only means of recuperating the lost qualities in Spain's horses. In the same work he also articulated the first detailed plan for the creation of the Cria Caballar, the Stud Book Español, the National Stud" (Steen). - A horse expert with the Royal Army, Laiglesia's treatise is wonderfully detailed and shows a thorough knowledge of Arabians and their bloodlines. His main thesis argues that with the introduction of as few as 20 of the best pure-bred Arabians, the entire country's stock of horses can be 'regenerated' in a few generations. To this end he launches into an in-depth discussion of the logistics of this plan, ranging from discussions of the desert Bedouin origin of the purest Arabians, from the regions surrounding Sanaa and Nedjed-el-Areb in the Arabian Gulf (Section 65) to an intimate familiarity with the different classes of Arabians from these bloodlines (Hatiks or Kadischi & Kochlani). Laiglesia notes with admiration that the practice of recording the bloodlines of these Arabians is extremely meticulous at the court of the Emir. - Laiglesia also addresses the problems of how to select the best pure-bred Arabians based on proportion, etc., as well as the difficulties in procuring them. He insists that they must be purchased 'on-site' in Arabia Felix and then brought to a station in Aleppo for inspection, en route to Spain. Laiglesia even suggests the most comfortable means of transporting the precious horses (by warship, rather than a smaller merchant vessel which doesn't have enough space). Interestingly, one measure for Laiglesia of the superiority of Arabians is their excellence in horse-races: he points out that all the greatest English champions (Flying Childers, High Flyer, Eclipse, etc.) have all been bred from Arabian stock. - The present author's manuscript and its illustration in fact show significant differences compared to the printed book, which is itself extremely rare (just 3 copies worldwide, according to OCLC). For the printed book, cf OCLC 63603570 (U Barcelona, British Library, U Penn); Palau 130186; Fairman Rogers Collection on the Horse, 453. Cf also Andrew K. Steen, El Caballo Arabe en España, 1831 a 1934 (2007). [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The German classicist and theologian Freytag (1788-1861) studied at Göttingen, but in his final year accepted an appointment as sub-librarian at Königsberg. Upon the proclamation of peace Freytag resigned his chaplaincy and returned to his research in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish, studying in Paris under Silvestre de Sacy. In 1819 he was appointed to the professorship of Oriental Languages at the new University of Bonn, and he held this post until his death.         Lecciones de Fortificaion de CampaÒa, Sacadas de las Obras Modernas que Tratan del Arte Militar, y Particularmente de la Obra Classica Francesca, Titulada Diario del Oficial de Ingenieros

Paris: Libreria Americana, Calle del Temple, No. 69, 1830. First edition.. Some light general staining and light foxing throughout; a bit worn, with some slight cracking along the joints; a good, sound copy.. 12mo, contemporary quarter calf, marbled boards, gilt spine, [4], 114 pages. A scarce handy guide on military field fortification (including lessons on fortifying a garden or a cemetery) and an interesting imprint given the contemporary Revolutionary tumult in Central and South America. (One wonders whether this title was published prior to the 1830 July Revolution, which prompted the return of liberal French rule and the consequent loss of French military support for Fedinand VII.) CCFr and OCLC each locate only the two BNF copies of this title; a search of CCFr for various iterations of Journal and IngÈnieur between 1800 and 1830 do not immediately return any obvious candidates as the French source book for this guide.

Lauska (/1764-1825) geheiratet hatte. Sie war eine Schülerin von J.C.H. Kretschmar (1769-1847) und von W. von Schadow (1788-1862). Lauska bereiste Italien drei Mal, sicher 1829-1830. Kersting (1785-1847) in Meißen.

Cistineae. The Natural Order of Cistus, or Rock-Rose

James Ridgway, London 1830 - (10 x 6 1/4 inches). 112 hand-coloured engraved plates by J. Hart, M. Hart, W. Hart and Mrs. Brown. Uncut. Contemporary green cloth, covers blocked in blind, flat spine divided into compartments with gilt rules, lettered in gilt in the second Sweet's highly decorative practical guide to the cultivation of the Rock-rose or Cistus: one of the most beautiful family of flowering plants. Cistus species are upright evergreen shrubs, having mostly pink or purple flowers, which resemble roses. Originally published in 28 parts between July 1825 and January 1830, each plate shows a single variety of Cistus or Rock-rose and is accompanied by text giving a taxonomic description and instructions for the plant's cultivation. The present example is a later issue, with plates on paper watermarked 1845. Robert Sweet "was born in 1783 at Cockington, near Torquay, Devonshire. When sixteen years old he was placed under his half-brother, James Sweet, at that time gardener to Richard Bright of Ham Green, near Bristol, with whom he remained nine years. He subsequently had charge of the collection of plants at Woodlands, the residence of John Julius Angerstein . In 1810 Sweet entered as a partner in the Stockwell nursery, and when that was dissolved in 1815, became foreman to Messrs. Whitley, Brames, & Milne, nurserymen, of Fulham, till 1819, when he entered the service of Messrs. Colvill. While in their employ he was charged with having received a box of plants knowing them to have been stolen from the royal gardens, Kew, but was acquitted after trial at the Old Bailey on 24 Feb. 1824. In 1826 he left the Colvills, and till 1831 occupied himself almost wholly in the production of botanical works, while still cultivating a limited number of plants in his garden at [Pomona Place] Parson's Green, Fulham. In 1830 he moved to [Cook's Ground, King's Road] Chelsea, where he had a larger garden and cultivated for sale to his friends? He died on 20 Jan. 1835. He had been elected a fellow of the Linnean Society on 14 Feb. 1812. The botanical genus Sweetia was named in his honour by De Candolle in 1825" (DNB). Uncoloured aquatint frontispiece to each, and 20 other aquatint plates, 2 of them folding, 21 full-page wood-engraved illustrations, 14 maps and plans, 2 fo them folding one of these an aquatint, wood-engraved title-page vignettes and numerous similar illustrations to the text. Perhaps a little rubbed, some foxing and browning, and occasional offsetting to and from the plates, but overall a very good set. First edition. "Military Service in India and Ceylon, 1790-1829" (Bruce). Welsh (1775-1861) was born in Scotland, and in 1790 was commissioned as ensign in the army of the HEIC, the following year being posted to the 3rd European Regiment in Madras. He participated in the capture of Pondicherry, 1793, and in 1795 of Ceylon; served in the 2nd Mahratta War, 1803-5, being present at Ahmadnagar, Argaum, Gwilghar, and Makarsir; 1805-7 commanded a battalion at Poona, putting down a mutiny of native troops at Palamkotta; 1809 lead the assault at the taking of Arambooly, Travancore; and in 1812 put down a native rising in the Wainad. He spent 1829-37 in England before returning to India as GOC Northern Division, Madras, until 1847. Welsh's memoirs "methodically trace nearly every step of the imposition of British control over South India. For the major encounters with the French, Dutch, and during the Mahratta War, he often lists the 'order of battle' and summarizes the casualties.
