Engelmann trained in Switzerland and France at La Rochelle and Bordeaux, and he studied painting and sketching in Jean-Baptiste RegnaultÕs atelier in Paris. In the summer of 1814 he travelled to Munich, Germany to study lithography, a German invention. The following spring, he founded La SociŽtŽ Lithotypique de Mulhouse. In June 1816 he opened a workshop in Paris. Engelmann is largely credited with bringing lithography to Franc and later, commercializing chromolithography. In 1837 he was granted an English patent for a process of chromolithography that provided consistently high-quality results. Throughout his life, he produced large numbers of prints, including numerous plates for Baron Isidore Justin SŽverin Taylor's celebrated collection of lithographs, ÇVoyages pittoresques et romantiques dans lÕancienne FranceÈ. Engelmann's Paris printing company, Engelmann et Graf was passed on to his son, Godefroy Engelmann II (born 1819), who carried on his father's work with the same high artistic quality until his own death in 1897.

The Noble Game of Billiards wherein are exhibited extraordinary & surprising strokes which have excited the admiration of most of the Sovereigns of Europe, by Monsieur Mingaud, formerly Captaine d'Infanterie in the service of France ... Translated & Published by ... Thurston

London: published by John Thurston, 1830. Imperial octavo. (11 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches). Engraved title, folding uncoloured aquatint frontispiece, 1 engraved introductory plate, 40 hand-coloured engraved diagrammatic plates of various plays, extra-illustrated with a smaller-format (10 x 6 1/4 inches) 1p. letterpress prospectus tipped-in at the front. Original dark red half roan over marbled paper-covered boards, upper cover mounted with original green glazed-paper label with engraved title, the flat spine divided into compartments with double gilt fillets A fine copy of the rare first English edition of this highly-influential work, here with the very rare original prospectus. François Mingaud is variously credited with the invention of the modern leather cue tip or, more narrowly, with the rounded leather cue tip. His skill as a player and as an innovator and introducer of controlled spin to the game of billiards is universally acknowledged. He first shared many of the secrets of the techniques that he developed in his publication, Noble Jeu de Billard published in Paris in 1827. The present work is the first English edition of Mingaud's original: it was translated from French into English and published by the London billiard table manufacturer, John Thurston, who also had engraved plates prepared from the lithographic originals. In the preface, Thurston vouches for Mingaud's assertion that he had come up with "the most brilliant discoveries of modern times ... Fully impressed with the great merits of M. Mingaud's Illustrations, the Translator has felt anxious to lay them before the British Public. He is aware that, to the novice, many of the strokes in the work, may appear impracticable. He has, however, not only had the satisfaction of seeing them performed on his own tables, at his Ware-rooms ... by M. Mingaud himself; but has been surprised to perceive, how readily the results have followed, when attempted, according to the rules laid down, by gentlemen who boasted no superiority of skill." The popularity of Mingaud's work in England can be judged from the fact that it was re-issued in 1831, a second edition was published in 1833 and a third in 1836: all are now rare (there is only one other record of the present edition having sold at auction in the past thirty five years).         Silhouettes Militaires. De la Révolution et du 1er Empire Collection Bernard-Franck

      - An magnificent collection of 20 military costume mixed media oil paintings that were once part of a major French collection of militariana. N.d., 1830 to 1860 -- these were nostalgic portraits created during the reigns of Louis Philippe and Louis Napoleon (Napoleon III). Brisquet, the artist, apparently was set-up on the esplanade by les Invalides, certainly a logical place for a creator of military-related bric-a-brac to set up shop, so to speak, and seek to sell his wares. A variety of sizes, ranging in height between 34 and 45 cm, and width, 10 to 29 cm. We have 21 panels in all, with one containing a short textual description of the group. By mixed media, we are referring to the application of cut-outs, made mostly of very thick card, on board, giving the portraits and accessories a dimensionality. Some of these applied pieces are movable -- arms in particular -- or were meant to be so. Largely by dint of these cut-outs, the portraits have a folk art or naive quality. The soldiers are shown carrying firearms, flags, musical instruments, etc. Seldom is the portrait without some other element of interest, and always the background is enriched with a landscape suggestive of a rural battlefield or training ground. The portraits are all by the same artist, Brisquet, and they all are done in the same style. Based on the short explanatory panel, which describes him as a "Tir", which translates as a shooter, we would surmise that he was himself a veteran and possibly a resident himself of les Invalides. Portrayed are the following military figures, rendered in the original French and translated to English if needed: Generale Barthélemy Catherine Joubert, General Eduard Mortier (unlabeled on front), two panels of grenadiers (without further specificity), grenadier hollandais, grenadier de la Vistule (Polish grenadier), tirailleur (sharpshooter), sapeur de dragons, lancier Espagnol, fusilier, inspecteur aux regnes, porte-drapeau (flag bearer), tombour des volontaires (volunteer drummers), eclaireur a cheval jeune garde (young mounted guard and scout -- the portrait doesn't show the guard on horseback though), musicien chapeau Chinois (musician with a Chinese hat), two panels, not identical, of musicien d'Etat-Major, Legion Italique 1800, Flanqueur chasseur and a voltigeur (a member of a skirmish unit created by Napoleon). Each of the paintings is framed by brown strips of thick card, about 1 cm in width. At the base of each picture, excepting one, is a thin label, attached with brad nails, identifying for us who is being portrayed. We can assume that Brisquet made many more of these, and it seems probable that Bernard-Franck himself had many more, based on the numbering on the backs of many of the paintings. Still, we would consider this grouping to be more than ample and not conspicuously lacking in anything. Bernard Franck (1848-1924) was recognized as a leading collector of both militariana and Napoleonic era souvenirs. Born in Paris of a Jewish family, Franck ran a family business that manufactured military equipment. During the Franco-Prussian War he volunteered as a Zuoave. During his lifetime parts of his collection were loaned out for exhibition, starting with the Paris Exposition of 1900, and a part of his collection would be acquired by J.P. Morgan, who contributed it to the Metropolitan Museum. Many of the figurines in his collection are now owned by the Musée de l’Armée which is located in les Invalides. All the panels have rings on their back that can be used for hanging them. The majority of the paintings are darkened and could benefit from a cleaning. This we can discern based on a few that are considerably brighter and thus are obviously closer to their original, intended state of color. Never, though, are featured blurred beyond recognition. A few chips to the applique pieces -- a missing hand, a missing piece to a wood stump, etc. Some of what were meant to be movable pieces no longer function as such. None of thes

A report of the trial at bar, Rowe v. Brenton, tried in the Court of King's Bench, Westminster, Michaelmas Term, 9 Geo.IV. as to the right to minerals in the assessional lands of the Duchy of Cornwall, with explanatory notes; and an appendix, containing the records and documents as given in evidence. By George Concanen.

London: W. Walker. 1830. 8vo., folding coloured lithographic map (of 'Lands showing the situation of Nan Smellyn alias Lamellyn'), xliii + (2) + 334 + (1) + 236 + 8*pp., some general paper browning and scattered foxing, title-page foxed, several near-contemporary ink amendments and emphasis marks, contemporary half calf gilt over marbled boards, neatly rebacked preserving the original gilt spine, a presentation copy inscribed by the compiler ('Mr Wells with Mr. Concanen's compts'), >with the 19th century armorial bookplate of John Davies Enys>, a further presentation inscription, dated Feb. 1849. (Hardy Wells to William Eagle), and the small inkstamp on the fly-leaf of Cornwall Record Office. First edition: scarce. A landmark trial in the long and contentious history of the legal (and constitutional) status of the Duchy of Cornwall, mineral rights of private landowners, the power of the Stannary courts, and, by extension, the whole matter of Cornwall's peculiar semi-separate status within the United Kingdom. The Rowe-Brenton case itself was brought to 'try the right to copper ore raised from the East Crinnis mines' at Tewington in Cornwall. * This copy is further enhanced by the addition, at the end of the volume, of A short statement of the case of the late Sir William Clayton, Bart. and his lessees holding an estate at Kennington, under the constitution of the Duchy of Cornwall> (8pp. London, 1834). A very rare pamphlet of which we can locate a copy at BL but no other (not in OCLC).

Humane policy; or justice to the aborigines of new settlements essential to a due expenditure of British money, and to the best interests of the settlers.

8vo., with a fine folding lithographic map*, coloured by hand, of Southern Africa, (2) vii (2) vi-xii 248 cclxxxii pp., including the half-title but without the advertisements found in some copies, in mid-19th century half calf gilt with raised bands, red morocco label, very minor wear to extremities. A very good copy recently from the library of the late Quentin Keynes but originally belonging to the Aborigines Protection Society (name in ink at head of title). "Although this volume was evidently written with the object of ameliorating the position of the natives of South Africa, it contains a mass of information, collected up to the date of publication, which renders it a valuable work of reference on matters regarding the Cape. The author points out the danger of losing our native population 'unless further exertions be made to save them,' and states that 'if, at the Cape, many among the colonists have often outraged humanity, every Christian administration will be found to have imposed insufficient restraints upon them, &c.' Instances are given of a number of cases of cruelty perpetrated upon the natives by the Boers, and the evidence is by no means confined to that of missionaries and travellers, many of whom have often been accused of bias against the burghers. There is a letter from Governor Janssens to the Landrost of Swellendam, and a proclamation, both dated 10th May 1803, and in the latter document reference is made to the 'breach between the Boers and the Hottentots,' and it is stated that 'the Governor and Council believe this breach arises from the ill performance of the Boers' engagements to the Hottentots, grievances as to wages, the forcible detention of themselves, their wives and children, as if they belonged to the Boers, which drives the men to desperation, &c.' The volume contains many extracts from letters of colonists and travellers, written during the latter part of the eighteenth and early part of the nineteenth centuries, which throw much light on the state of South Africa at this period. The appendices are ample, and embrace much interesting and valuable matter, especially with reference to the early history of Natal and the Cape Colony, and the disputes with the natives throughout the country." [Mendelssohn loc. cit.] The Ferguson reference reminds us of Saxe Bannister's Australian connection. Bannister had been appointed attorney-general of New South Wales in 1823 at a salary (apparently experimental) of ?1200. His biographer notes that he "took a lively interest in the welfare of the coloured races, and was one of the founders of the Aborigines' Protection Society. In Australia he did not work very well with several of the leading members of the government; he considered their treatment of the natives too harsh. Indeed, his condemnation of the masters' power of flogging their servants ultimately involved him in a duel ... He left the colony under somewhat mysterious circumstances, having been removed from office in April 1826". [Thompson Cooper in DNB] He does include a brief section on the aborigines of New South Wales in Humane policy. * The map shows missionary stations, military posts, native towns and so forth intended to illustrate, (1) the "irresistible progress of white settlers into the interior", (2) the "populousness of the native tribes near the Cape colony", and (3) "that our traders and missionaries are on the eve of intercourse with the Portuguese out-posts".

A report of the trial at bar, Rowe v. Brenton,

8vo., folding coloured lithographic map (of "Lands showing the situation of Nan Smellyn alias Lamellyn"), xliii (2) 334 (1) 236 8*pp., some general paper browning and scattered foxing, title-page foxed, several near-contemporary ink amendments and emphasis marks, contemporary half calf gilt over marbled boards, neatly rebacked preserving the original gilt spine, a presentation copy inscribed by the compiler ("Mr Wells with Mr. Concanen's compts"), with the 19th century armorial bookplate of John Davies Enys, a further presentation inscription, dated Feb. 1849. (Hardy Wells to William Eagle), and the small inkstamp on the fly-leaf of Cornwall Record Office. A landmark trial in the long and contentious history of the legal (and constitutional) status of the Duchy of Cornwall, mineral rights of private landowners, the power of the Stannary courts, and, by extension, the whole matter of Cornwall's peculiar semi-separate status within the United Kingdom. The Rowe-Brenton case itself was brought to "try the right to copper ore raised from the East Crinnis mines" at Tewington in Cornwall. * This copy is further enhanced by the addition, at the end of the volume, of A short statement of the case of the late Sir William Clayton, Bart. and his lessees holding an estate at Kennington, under the constitution of the Duchy of Cornwall (8pp. London, 1834). A very rare pamphlet of which we can locate a copy at BL but no other (not in OCLC).

        Cours de philosophie positive.

Paris: Bachelier,, 1830-42. 6 volumes, octavo (200 x 123 mm). Contemporary red roan-backed pebble grain paper covered boards, spines ruled and decorated gilt in compartments, speckled edges, marbled endpapers. Folding synoptic table in volume I. Bookplates of W. Bourke Cockran (1854-1923), New York congressman and friend of the Churchills (whose oratorical skills are said to have influenced the young Winston). Bindings professionally furbished, scattered foxing (heavy in places). An attractive set, complete with half-titles. First edition of Comte's most important work, the canonical statement of positivism. It is in the prodigious Cours that he lays the foundations of his system, establishing, under the conception of the Law of the Three States, the new sociology in its historical and formal relations to the other sciences. "The remarkable achievement of Comte, all arguments about the validity of his theories aside, is the construction of a system which embraces all human activity and knowledge... [it] is still one of the major documents of secular philosophy" (Printing and the Mind of Man). From the library of Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville (1777-1850), French zoologist and anatomist, member of the French Académie des Sciences, and from 1830 successor to Lamarck in the chair of natural history at the museum (a note on the front free endpaper of volume I states: "Notes manuscrites de Ducrotay de Blainville"); extensively annotated throughout with pencilled marginalia and ink annotations to paper slips tipped in at various intervals. Some annotations were clearly slightly trimmed upon binding, the notes presumably having been made when the work was still in the original wrappers or boards. There is an extended piece on de Blainville in David M. Damkaer's The Copepodologist's Cabinet: A Biographical and Bibliographical History, American Philosophical Society 2002, pp. 241-49), where his work on lernaeids (a type of copepod or small crustacean) is highlighted: "The 1820s yielded one major effort on the peculiar parasitic forms [of copepods]. This was de Blainville's memoir on lernaeids, the first monograph to review and revise a single, extensive copepod group. De Blainville came the closes yet to recognising these forms as crustaceans". One of the major philosophical texts of the nineteenth century carrying detailed annotations by a leading contemporary French zoologist.
