Prijs: € 1.150,-.

Papers Explanatory of the Charges brought against Lieut. Gen. Darling, by William Charles Wentworth, Esq

House of Commons, London 1830 - Foolscap quarto, 60pp. and docket title leaf, an excellent copy (uncut and not folded) in a blue folding quarter cloth protective case with ribbon ties. A gritty insight into colonial politics of the 1820s, pitting individual liberty and the freedom of the press against the power of Governor Ralph Darling. As this publication records, William Charles Wentworth had attacked Darling for his contentious treatment of two soldiers of the New South Wales regiment, Sudds and Thompson. The argument was conducted largely in the pages of Wentworth's Australian newspaper, to which Darling responded with attempts to further curb the freedom of the press, imposing stamp duties on Sydney newspapers, and bringing libel charges against private citizens. These actions polarised the judiciary against the governor, and Darling came to believe the judges acted against him in collusion with Wentworth. This report of 1830 ostensibly published all of the relevant documents, however, the Colonial Office was partial to Darling's case and edited the documents in a manner that seriously misrepresented the affair, omitting a crucial letter from Wentworth to Sir George Murray. When this omission was revealed the Colonial Office was forced to publish the entire text of the Wentworth impeachment (issued in the parliamentary papers of 1832). Some years later in 1835 Darling was cleared of Wentworth's charges by a Select Committee of the House of Commons. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Twelfth Night Characters. Park's Characters

London: A. Park, 47, Leonard Street, Finsbury, 1830. Broadside of twenty-four vividly hand-colored cards, each depicting a costumed character and a riddle, with answers provided at the base of the sheet. At Twelfth Night celebrations marking the close of the Christmas season, each party guest would draw a card, and impersonate that character for the evening: King of Peace, Queen of Mirth, Ismail Pacha, The English Rose, Cossack of the Don, How-Ching, The Yankee Girl, and so on. The riddles favor bad puns: "Why is a disagreeable woman like a male pig? Because she's a Bore." "Why is London Bridge like the House of Lords? Because it is supported by Piers." Publisher Park issued a series of Twelfth Night character cards with different themes: this set depicts national caricatures from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. A near-fine survival. Hand-colored pictorial sheet of Twelfth Night character cards with accompanying riddles, uncut, measuring 19.5 x 14.5 inches. Creased where folded, with occasional closed tear and early repairs to verso; inked address and trace of stamp to verso.

The Pilgrim's Progress with A Life of John Bunyan by Robert Southey

John Murray, London 1830 - Three volumes, complete Octavo. full burgundy morocco decorated in gilt, spines with raised bands and lettered in gilt, inner gilt and morocco dentelles, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, silk bookmarks, by Root. Illustrated with engravings. This set is extra illustrated with 313 plates. The Pilgrim's Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come; Delivered under the Similitude of a Dream is a 1678 Christian allegory written by John Bunyan. It is regarded as one of the most significant works of religious English literature, has been translated into more than 200 languages, and has never been out of print.Bunyan began his work while in the Bedfordshire county prison for violations of the Conventicle Act, which prohibited the holding of religious services outside the auspices of the established Church of England. Early Bunyan scholars such as John Brown believed The Pilgrim's Progress was begun in Bunyan's second, shorter imprisonment for six months in 1675, but more recent scholars such as Roger Sharrock believe that it was begun during Bunyan's initial, more lengthy imprisonment from 1660 to 1672 right after he had written his spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners. The English text comprises 108,260 words and is divided into two parts, each reading as a continuous narrative with no chapter divisions. The first part was completed in 1677 and entered into the Stationers' Register on 22 December 1677. It was licensed and entered in the "Term Catalogue" on 18 February 1678, which is looked upon as the date of first publication. After the first edition of the first part in 1678, an expanded edition, with additions written after Bunyan was freed, appeared in 1679. The Second Part appeared in 1684. There were eleven editions of the first part in John Bunyan's lifetime, published in successive years from 1678 to 1685 and in 1688, and there were two editions of the second part, published in 1684 and 1686. - wikipedia. In 1837 he was granted an English patent for a process of chromolithography that provided consistently high-quality results. Throughout his life, he produced large numbers of prints, including numerous plates for Baron Isidore Justin SŽverin Taylor's celebrated collection of lithographs, ÇVoyages pittoresques et romantiques dans lÕancienne FranceÈ. Engelmann's Paris printing company, Engelmann et Graf was passed on to his son, Godefroy Engelmann II (born 1819), who carried on his father's work with the same high artistic quality until his own death in 1897.

Autograph letter signed; "H Bülow," to Hermann Wolff, September 13, 1892

-. A rectangular portion of a blank facet has been torn away; folded and spit at folds, with two old mends.. Two and a half pages, on three sides of a bifolium, approx. 5 X 8 in. A substantial and somewhat agitated letter from the great conductor to the concert impresario. Hans von Bülow (1830 -1894) was perhaps the most renowned conductor in Germany in the nineteenth century, instrumental in establishing the prominence of Richard Wagner, Franz Liszt, and Richard Strauss, among others. Hermann Wolff (1845-1902), the Jewish concert agent and impresario persuaded von Bülow to accept the position of principal conductor at the Berlin Philharmonic, helping to cement that orchestra's longterm reputation.

Early 19th Century Handwritten Mechanic's Lesson Book

Eastern Pennsylvania, 1830. Manuscript. Very Good. Folio. 40 pages, 33 of which have been written upon. No cover. Appears to be missing the first page of text, perhaps it was written inside the front of the missing cover. Sound string binding. Light wear and soiling to the first and last pages. The text is written in a very attractive hand with ornate calligraphic headers. Beautiful, detailed mechanical drawings throughout, two in color. This copybook is divided into three sections, "Mechanical Power," "Mechanics," and "Machinery". Theoretical lessons begin with the lever and progress through simple machines, forces, dynamics, hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, and pneumatics. This is followed by lessons on various categories of machinery: steam, water, wind, gravity, etc. An exceptionally scarce piece of educational Americana. From an eastern Pennsylvania estate and said perhaps to have been created by an early student of Philadelphia's Franklin Institute of the State of Pennsylvania for the Promotion of the Mechanic Arts which was founded in 1824. Engineering education was virtually non-existent before the Industrial Revolution and didn't begin in earnest until 1821 when the first Mechanic's Institute (the predecessor of Heriot-Watt University) was established in Scotland.

        Strafford: Tragedie en cinq Actes

[France] 1830 - A unique manuscript copy of Lally-Tolendal’s French tragedy Le Comte de Strafford, dedicated by a grateful pupil to her tutor. The play ‘en cinq actes et en vers’ was first published in London in 1795, and provides a dramatic interpretation of the life of Thomas Wentworth, First Earl of Strafford (1593–1641), a major figure in the period leading up to the English Civil War. From 1632–39 he was Lord Deputy of Ireland, where he established a strong authoritarian rule, and upon recall to England became a key adviser to Charles I, attempting to strengthen the royal position against Parliament. After failing in this, and making various advisements not to Charles’s liking, Wentworth was impeached and condemned to death for his ‘high misdemeanours’. Although more than a century after his death, the French Revolution saw an increasing vogue for Wentworth in royalist circles on both sides of the Channel and an ‘extraordinary Strafford cult seems to have developed among French conservatives both before and in the wake of the revolution’ (Merritt, The Political World of Thomas Wentworth). Indeed, the first biography of Strafford was published by a group of French exiles. The play’s author, Lally-Tolendal (1751–1830), was the legitimised son of a French landowner and military general of Irish Jacobite ancestry who was executed for failing to capture Madras, losing the Battle of Wandiwash and ultimately ceding French control of Pondicherry. Lally-Tolendal only discovered the secret of his birth on the day of his father’s execution, and thereafter devoted himself to clearing his name. With support from luminaries such as Voltaire he succeeded in persuading Louis XVI to annul the decree which had sentenced his father, but the parlement of Rouen ultimately decided in favour of Lally’s guilt, and his innocence was never fully admitted by French judges. In the play he draws explicit parallels between Strafford’s story and the destruction of his own father. Whilst the pupil here does not transcribe Lally-Tollendal’s dedicatory epistle or the list of subscribers, the text is clearly taken from, and is a faithful reproduction of, the printed play. Small 4to (209 × 168 mm), pp. [134], followed by 15 blank leaves; the first two pages with coloured floral calligraphy and the text of the play transcribed in neat cursive; original maroon morocco and stippled boards, somewhat scuffed, spine ends a little frayed, upper board slightly bowed; early ownership inscription.         Elémens de chimie théorique et pratique, avec l¿indication des principales applications aux sciences et aux arts, ouvrage dans lequel les corps sont classés par familles naturelles.

      - Paris, Méquignon-Marvis, 1830. 2 volumes in-8, [6]-IX-717-[1]p, 3planches & [4]-826-[1]p, 2 planches.

In the summer of 1814 he travelled to Munich, Germany to study lithography, a German invention. The following spring, he founded La SociŽtŽ Lithotypique de Mulhouse. In June 1816 he opened a workshop in Paris. Engelmann is largely credited with bringing lithography to Franc and later, commercializing chromolithography.
