        An Uncommon Tour of Europe by Carriage by an Englishman, Visiting Mer de Glace in French Alps - Germany - Switzerland, and with Naturalist Jakob Samuel Wyttenbach

      Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, France, 23 July - 8 October 1829. Manuscript fair journal of an Englishman's adventurous overland journey through four countries in a horse-drawn carriage, taking some lesser-travelled routes, following the river Rhine, ascending to the glaciers of Mont Blanc, and being in Belgium at the time of Dutch occupation when it was part of 'The Kingdom of the Netherlands.' 8vo. 175 pages, plus introduction leaf. Half green calf over marbled boards, marbled endpapers. Some leafs watermarked 'Slade 1824'. A pleasing account. The late Georgian era travel diary of a rather adventurous man in his day, evidently of comfortable wealth, the present volume offers a pleasant and nostalgic reflection of European cities and villages as they were some seven to eight generations past. The traveller describes ancient cathedrals and monuments, fortresses, quiet villages, picturesque promenades, and undeveloped landscapes which have long since been industrialized and overpopulated. His interest in history, religious, political, architectural, sociological, and so forth, suggests that he is also an educated man, although he does not identify himself by name. A single mention is made of Conner, perhaps a brother or friend, whom he is travelling with. This being the writer's very first journey outside of England, his native country, the first entry is made on 23 July 1829 as he sets off from Dover aboard His Majesty's Mail Packet Salamander [built circa 1826], reflecting on the journey there from London as he crosses the English Channel to Calais. Immediately he is struck by French fashion. In Calais he hires the horse-drawn carriage for three months, with conductor, and the journey begins with visits to Saint-Omer, Cassel, and Lille. Nineteen (19) pages of his travel diary are devoted to historic Belgium, which for a brief period of twenty-four years from 1815-1839 was under Dutch occupation, then being part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. First stop Tournai, then to Brussels where he took a lovely tour and found luxurious accommodation, on to Waterloo, Namur, and Huy where only a few years earlier in 1818 the Fortress of Huy had been built by the Dutch, his explorations in what is now Belgium concludes at the healing mineral baths of Spa. [Following the Belgian Revolution, Belgium broke away from the Netherlands the year after this journey, in 1830. Namur continued to be a major garrison town under the new government.] His road through Germany follows the river Rhine for the most part, making an exceptionally scenic tour. At Aix-la-Chapelle [Aachen] he describes of the cathedral built by order of the Emperor Charlemagne [Charles the Great] who was buried there after his death in 814, and mentions Frederick Barbarossa who canonized Charlemagne in 1165. His horse-drawn carriage takes him from there to Cologne, Koblenz, continuing south to Bacharach, Bingen, Frankfurt am Main, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Baden-Baden, Kehl, and finally to Freiburg where he describes the Freiburg Minster. Approximately thirty-seven (37) pages are devoted to Germany. [At the time of his journey, there remained tensions between the Roman Catholic Rhineland and the Protestant Prussian state, with Cologne being at the center of the repeatedly escalating conflicts. Cologne had been made part of the Kingdom of Prussia with the Congress of Vienna (1814-1815) following Napoleon's final defeat and abdication, first as part of the Jülich-Cleves-Berg province and then the Rhine province. Frankfurt had entered the newly founded German Confederation as a free city, becoming the seat of its Bundestag.] The first Swiss town visited was Schaffhausen. From there he briefly crossed the border back into Germany to visit Blumberg and Rhine Falls, then he continued to Zurich, Lucerne, Surcee, and Langenthal (which would not see municipal water, nor electric utility for some sixty years). In Bern, the traveller visited the world renowned Swiss Protestant (Reformed) theologian and naturalist, Jakob Samuel Wyttenbach (1748-1830), who gave him a private tour and showed him his collections of art etc. Between Morat [Murten] and Payerne he takes notice of "a stone pillar erected in 1822 by the Fribourgians in commemoration of a victory over Charles the Bold", then proceeds to Lausanne, Geneva, and Pregnis [Pregny-Chambésy]. Spending a few days around Lake Geneva, he also visited Chillon castle. Approximately thirty-six (36) pages devoted to Switzerland. From Ferney-Voltaire, France, a long journey was undertaken to the Valley of Chamounix and through the French Alps. Still travelling on a horse-drawn carriage even for a harrowing ascent to Montenvers Mer de Glace, the highlight of the entire journey was surely crossing the massive ice chasms. His ambitious itinerary continues to Bellegarde-sur-Valserine, Meximieux, Lyon, Roanne, Moulins, Nevers, La Charité, Bourges, Issoudun, Loches, Tours, Châteaudun, Chartres, Rambouillet, Versailles, Saint-Cloud, finally visiting Paris. From there he proceeds to Saint-Denis, and his final entry is made upon settling for the night on 8 October at a hotel in Beauvais. Approximately seventy-nine (79) pages are devoted to France. Excerpts from the text: "The following is a brief Journal of a Tour through part of the Netherlands, along the banks of the Rhine into Switzerland, and a return over the Jura through France, with a deviation from the usual routes & tours, and from thence to Paris &c &c..." 24 July 1829, Calais. "The women do not go about in bonnets but wear plain neat caps with broad borders, & long cloaks. Many of them have also long earrings..." "... went with Conner to choose a carriage for our journey. I fixed upon a very good calèche [horse-drawn carriage] for which I agreed to pay 300 francs for the first month, 250 for the 2nd, & 200 for the 3rd & the owners to stand all repairs... Our conductor... served 30 years in the French Army..." 27 July 1829, Cassel, "Kingdom of the Netherlands". "We next went to see the gardens & pleasure grounds of General Vandames which are very prettily laid out... altogether about 50 acres & are surrounded by a wall..." [General Dominique-Joseph René Vandamme, Count of Unseburg (1770-1830) was a French military officer, who fought in the Napoleonic Wars and in 1815 was exiled to America. He settled in Philadelphia.] 28 July 1829, Basieux, "Kingdom of the Netherlands". "... entering the Netherlands we were stopped at Basieux & have our passports examined & a little further on at the Custom House one or two of our trunks were searched & all our packages had a piece of lead affixed, as a proof they had undergone & done inspection." 31 July 1829, Namur, "Kingdom of the Netherlands". "I got to Namur a little before 6. It is a fine old town... lies between 2 hills at the confluence of the Sambre & the Meuse... went to see the Church of the Jesuits a noble building... columns very handsome of red & black marble..." 4 August 1829, Aix-la-Chapelle [Aachen]. "In the center of the church is the tomb of Charlemagne with this plain inscription... on a throne of white marble... on a pedestal of six steps which was taken out of this tomb after Charlemagne had been embalmed 350 years before Frederick Barbarossa, & on which 36 Emperors have since been crowned. This ceremony has been discontinued at this place from the time of Maximilian 1st..." 8-9 August 1829, Frankfurt am Main. "... a large handsome & populous city... governed by its own magistracy. The streets are spacious... many of the houses have a stately & clean appearance.... cathedral... the organ is said to be 500 years old. The Emperors of Germany are crowned here... in future they are to be crowned at Vienna." 12 August 1829, Karlsruhe. "From Dourlach [Durlach] to Carlsruhe is a very long straight avenue of poplars planted close together in rows. It extends 8 miles... Carlsruhe is a very pleasant clean looking town with wide streets & some good houses... the magnificent Palace of the Duke of Baden [Ludwig I]... a ball room 8 or so wax candles are lighted when it is used... music room also handsome with a gallery all round... there were 365 rooms... to the top of the tower from which there is a most beautiful & extensive..." 14 August 1829, Baden-Baden. "... lies in a valley & is surrounded by hills & vineyards. It is famous for its hot baths... walked to a sort of a promenade with shops on each side...went also to the hot wells." 21 August 1829, Sursee. "... the Town of Sursee where we halted for a short time to water the horses... Opposite the Inn was a machine for sawing timber, put in motion by water..." 23-24 August 1829, Bern. "... called on Mr. Wyttenbach an excellent worthy old man. He is minister of the Lutheran Church... He is visited by celebrated men of all countries & he shewed us some drawings that had been given him... He does not speak English... This morning we went again to Mr. Wyttenbach who shewed us a number of views of the different mountains & places in the neighbourhood... proceeded to the museum." 9 September 1829, "Road to Chamouni" "... along some fine woody mountains... very high rocks... on the right was the river... a very steep ascent from which we got towards the top and had a most magnificent view... looking down the immense precipices into the valley below... came to another bridge the Pont Pelissier... on looking up we at once beheld the snowy summit of Mont Blanc just becoming visible through the mist... A little further on we first had a view of the Glaciers... We thus entered the Valley of Chamouni... " 9 September 1829, Montenvers Mer de Glace. "The view as we proceeded was extremely grand... below the village of Chamouni & the river Arve... from the path to the bottom it was in some places almost perpendicular... the height was 2025 feet above the valley... descended on the other side to the mer de glace. I went on it. I crossed some chasms... a most grand & curious place..." 1 October 1829, Châteaudun. "I stopped at the Grande Monarque where we got accommodations. The town is very ancient & some of the buildings much decayed... a spacious square where a market was held....a promenade... an ancient castle near it which belongs to the Duke..." [The Grand Monarque Hotel lived up to its name, being an immense sixteenth century building which was originally a baron's mansion, and was converted to a prestigious hotel in 1804. It was destroyed by fire by a group of German soldiers during the Franco-Prussian War on 18 Octobre 1870.] 2 October 1829, Rambouillet. "... there is a Royal Palace [Château de Rambouillet] where Francis 1st died & the present king come there very often..." 2 October 1829, St. Cloud. "... we saw some of the Royal party go away in a carriage of four. We then went to St. Cloud...walked round the outside & had a fine view of Paris... took the opportunity of seeing the grand display of China..." 4 October 1829, Paris. "Went to the English church in the Champs-Élysées..." 4 October 1829, Paris. "... the cemetery of Père Lachaise the place where the dead are burned... a variety of monuments of affluent forms & sizes & many vaults belonging to private families all above ground. Some are open to view & have a number of catacombs... altogether 140,000 monuments... some of the celebrated French Generals... there are 25 burials a day..." End Excerpts. The Kingdom of the Netherlands finds its origin in the aftermath of Napoleon's defeat in 1813. In March 1815, amidst the turmoil of the Hundred Days, the Sovereign Prince adopted the style of "King of the Netherlands". Following Napoleon's second defeat at the Battle of Waterloo, the Vienna Congress supplied international recognition of William's unilateral move. The new King of the Netherlands was also made Grand Duke of Luxembourg, a part of the Kingdom that was, at the same time, a member state of the German Confederation. In 1830, Belgium seceded from the Kingdom, a step that was recognised by the Netherlands only in 1839. At that point, Luxembourg became a fully independent country in a personal union with the Netherlands. Luxembourg also lost more than half of its territory to Belgium.

Cet ouvrage très complet couvre le sujet depuis les poursuites et confiscations exercées contre les Albigeois en 1178 jusqu'à l'abolition de l'Inquisition par ordonnance de Louis XV en 1772. Il donne, en dernière partie, un tableau chronologique des évènements relatifs à l'Inquisition, ainsi qu'un index des noms et lieux cités. Les récits atroces de cette Histoire furent largement repris dans bien d'autres ouvrages, en particulier celui de Joseph Hansen sur la sorcellerie au Moyen Âge, "Sources and investigations regarding the history of obsessive belief in witches and witch hunts in the middle ages", qui devint à son tour une référence. Au bout du compte, les ouvrages de Lamothe-Langon furent à l'origine d'une part importante des "connaissances" du XXe siècle sur l'Inquisition, la sorcellerie, la torture et la jurisprudence médiévale. Cet ouvrage était supposé se baser sur des archives encore jamais exploitées du diocèse de Toulouse, mises à la disposition de l'auteur par l'évêque Hyacinthe Sermet. En fait Norman Cohn a démontré que l'auteur, romancier populaire et non historien, a falsifié l'histoire en décrivant des procès en masse de sorcières à Toulouse au XIIIe siècle. Hand-colored engraved folding frontispiece map, folding chart. Contemporary half-calf, marbled boards, blind- and gilt-decorated on spines, black morocco lettering-pieces. In 1828, Hall visited Quebec, Pennsylvania, New York and the New England states, New Orleans, the Mississippi and the Ohio river valleys. "Accustomed to a better-disciplined society and bred in the exacting traditions of the British Navy, he found difficulty in adjusting himself to the democratic manners and rude accommodations he found in the United States, both North and South. Nevertheless, he was a clear and forceful writer, and his work contains many excellent descriptions of places and conditions that came under his observation" (Clark, Old South III, 48). Das Werk erschien 1829-44 und enthält "in 40 Bänden, die Register ungerechnet, den Schatz seiner lebenslänglichen Forschungen" (Wurzbach). Der ungarische Theologe, Historiker und Universitätsbibliothekar G. Fejér (1766-1851), der "Nestor der ungarischen Gelehrten" (ebd.), widmete "den größten Theil seines Lebens [...] den mühsamsten Forschungen, deren Gegenstand stets die Geschichte des ungarischen Volkes war". - Zu Beginn des Bandes eingebunden ist ein Brief mit eigenh. Unterschrift des Zipser Bischofs Jozef Bélik (1757-1847) an die Gemeindevorstände, in denen er das Erscheinen des Werkes ankündigt und zur Subskription einlädt.       1829. Oblong folio (485 x 406 mm). Ms. title page, 1 tinted and 8 hand-coloured aquatints by A. Sanquirico (all on paper with watermark "J. Whatman, Turkey Mill"); tissue guards preserved throughout. Contemp. green boards with elaborate gilt neo-classical decoration. In same-coloured original slipcase. Alessandro Sanquirico's impressive stage designs for Pacini's "L'Ultimo Giorno di Pompei" as performed at the Milan Scala in 1827 were never sold in the regular book trade, as Nagler and Wurzbach confirm - even the title page was drawn by hand, which explains the several slightly different wordings of the very few copies that can be traced. The plates show scenes from the opera against splendid neo-classical architecture; the actors are depicted in elaborate costume, and there is an impressive view of Vesuvius erupting. - Sanquirico is considered the best stage designer of his time. From 1817 to 1832 he was "scenografico unico" at the Milano "Scala", where he was much admired for his inexhaustible production of new creations. "He is a master of perspective, and a painter of the finest taste; capable of creating magical effects through colour and light. Every one of his decorations is possessed of a unique magic and rich versatility of invention. There was not an opera in which Sanquirico, apart from the celebrated singers, did not also celebrate his triumph" (Nagler). For this present album, Sanquirico used the best paper available, the strong velin made by the Turkey Mill on which James Audubon also printed his 'Birds of America' (cf. The colouring is masterfully executed, showing exceptional brilliance; hundreds of fine hues lend these scenes a unique beauty and atmospheric splendour. - Some staining to endpapers; otherwise an immaculate copy in the original boards as issued. The exceptionally rare first edition of this famous series of political caricatures. Oblong folio (10 3/16 x 13 1/4 inches; 258 x 338 mm.). Original lithographed front wrapper dated 1829 bound in at front (expertly restored at top margin just touching title). One leaf of letterpress with the Preface by Achille Comte, and seventy-one hand-colored lithographed plates.Bound ca. 1880 in half medium green morocco over green patterned boards, ruled in gilt. Spine with five raised bands elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, marbled end-papers. Small circular book-plate on front paste-down. Plates 42 & 49 very slightly shorter on lower margin, plate 70 with upper corner (2 x 1 inches) torn away, not affecting image. Some sporadic and very light water-staining to top margins of a few plates. Very scarce in this, the first edition. This copy bound without his two final plates ('Famille des scarabées' no. 72) and state ('Une bête féroce,' no. 73) which were not permitted in France."This famous album, which established Granville's early stye of bitter burlesque, has become rare. Indeed, it is known to many of his admirers only through the greatly inferior album of seventy wood-engraved reproductions published by Harvard in 1854?Lust, gluttony, anger, and the other deadly sins are stigmatized, now with the blow of a hammer, now with the thrust of a stiletto; while the foibles and humors of mankind also receive due attention. Throughout the series Grandville's choice of beast-heads is inspired; and the force of his conceptions and the wit of his captions rarely falter. Occasionally, he produces a design of universal application that calls Goya to mind, as in the bat and owl creatures bewildered by the sunshine of 'The light that hurts them' (no. 12). Perhaps his most terrifying plate is 'Ménagerie (no. 67), which shows four prison cells. Late 19th century half calf with giltstamped spine title. Untrimmed. Without question the largest pictorial encyclopedia of the world published during the 19th century, and one of the rarest works to be found complete. Printed in a press run of no more than 300 copies, this set is numbered "12" and was inscribed to a friend of the author ("del socio Signor G. Ferrario"); as such, it was printed on superior paper and coloured particularly carefully (according to Brunet, most of the 300 copies produced were issued entirely uncoloured). The purpose of this 37-volume set in large folio format was to provide a complete account of all known parts of the world not only by describing in detail the various peoples' costumes, governments, religion, habits, military, arts and science, but also by showing them in splendid illustrations, all of which are here individually coloured by hand. The engravings include not only many costumes, but also buildings, objects of religious and of everyday use, monuments, historical scenes and much more. The plates are printed on wove paper and bear the publisher's drystamp. In spite of the enormous number of plates, the colouring is meticulous throughout. - Initially planned for no more than 13 volumes (1816-1827) and also published in French, this present Italian edition is the only one that was issued complete with all supplements and the plates in their impressive folio format. - Of the utmost rarity: we could not trace a single complete copy on the market since 1950. Auction records list only the abridged 8vo reprint or single volumes of the present folio edition (Sotheby's, May 28, 2002, lot 426: £8,720 for vol. I, pt. 3 only). Grüßen Sie mir Herrn Haslinger [...]". - Moscheles war am Prager Konservatorium Schüler von Dionys Weber, in Wien von Johann Georg Albrechtsberger und Antonio Salieri "und gehörte bald zu den beliebtesten Pianisten und Lehrern Wiens" (DBE). 1825 übersiedelte er nach London, wo er zu den führenden Persönlichkeiten des Musiklebens zählte und als Professor an der Royal Academy of Music und als Mitdirektor und Dirigent der Royal Philharmonic Society tätig war. 1843 verpflichtete ihn sein ehemaliger Schüler und Freund Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy als Klavierlehrer an das Leipziger Konservatorium.       Methodist autograph album: A very rare important Methodist autograph book with the vast majority of sayings, hymns, and extracts written around 1829 and dated to Sheffield, presumably at the Wesleyan Methodist Connexional meeting. Bound handsome green, straight-grained calf. 40 total autographs plus 5 pictures. Measures at 4.5" x 7.25"The Contents Include:Ahterton, Rev. William (1776-1850). President of the Wesleyan Conference and sometime opponent of Jabez Bunting. Atherton maintained that the only good thing the Anglican church had ever given Methodism was the kick to the backside it gave Wesley when it cast him out of her impure assembly. Many of his sermons were published. However, he is likely best-known for his infamous instance of foot-in-mouth.The famous Wesleyan female preacher, Mary Barritt was in attendance at a funeral sermon for Joseph Taylor, who had been converted under the preaching of the said woman. Not knowing it to be so, and opposed evidently to female preachers, he proceeded in his discourse, Balaam was converted by the braying of an ass, and Peter by the crowing of a cock; and our lamented brother by the preaching of a woman. 10 line signed sentiment, dated May 21, 1829. A well informed mind, and intelligent conversation, a sweet and amiable temper, under the influence of Grace, constitute that interesting being called woman, the noblest of all God's creatures.Marsden, Joshua (1777-1837). Early missionary of the Wesleyan Methodists, he had important stations in Nova Scotia and Bermuda, also penning the important missionary anthem, Go Ye Messengers of God. He is author of: Amusements of a mission; or poems, moral, religious, and descriptive. Interspersed with anecdotes. Written during a residence abroad (1818). The Backslider, a descriptive moral poem, in four books (1815). An extract from the Rev. J. Marsden's journal, during his passage from New York to England to which are added, Lines on the much lamented death of the Rev. Thomas Coke (1815). Grace displayed: an interesting narrative of the life, conversion, Christian experience, ministry and missionary labours of Joshua Marsden (1814). The Narrative of a Mission to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Somer Islands; with a tour to Lake Ontario. To which is added the Mission, an original poem, .... also a brief Account of Missionary Societies, etc. (1816). etc.12 line signed sentiment, dated August 10th, 1829. This is a wonderfully befitting inscription.8 lines, dated August 11th, 1829. Now, as these qualities are attainable by all who seem them with due perseverance, does not their rarity render it probably that the good sense which justly values and effectually pursues them is almost as uncommon as genius?Beecham, John (1787-1856). John Beechman was born in Barnoldby le Beck in Lincolnshire. He was converted in 1812 and entered the Wesleyan ministry three years later. From 1831 to 1855 Beecham served as a general secretary of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society and proved an excellent organiser with a good eye for detail. He was particularly active in strengthening missionary work in the West Indies and was prominent in the drawing up of constitutions for Conferences in France, Australia and Canada. A close friend of Jabez Bunting, Beecham was a staunch supporter of the Connexion's conservative wing. He published a well known Essay on the Constitution of Wesleyan Methodism in 1829 and an edition of John Wesley's sermons. Beecham served as President of Conference in 1850.Hammet, William. Yet another eminent 19th century Methodist . . . probably the namesake of the notorious companion of Thomas Coke who almost split the American Methodist movement during the late 18th century. 24 lines, dated August 1829. Sheffield Conference.There are a few of those mentioned in the Scriptures, whose character is presented in a more interesting light than that of the sisters of Lazarus. Of them it is said that "Jesus loved them." We naturally inquire what it was that secured this honourable distinction; and why Mary seemed to have been preferred by our Lord to her sister. The reason obviously is, that the sisters secured the visits of their Lord, waited on him with delight, and Mary preferred a seat at his feet, and the instruction of his lips to everything else beside. Never does Jesus look with so much delight on a young female as when she sits at his feet and fervently prays for herself and others. An excised free rank, dated to London, 1790, neatly tipped in to the album.Rattenbury, John. John Rattenbury (1806-1879) joined the Wesleyan Methodist Society in Manchester at the age of sixteen, and began to preach three years later. He trained for the ministry under the Rev. Joseph Roberts and was appointed to his first circuit in 1828. He was highly regarded as a minister and was an effective evangelist who was well-known for inspiring revivals such as the one that occurred during his ministry in Leeds in 1837. He was elected President of the Conference in 1851. He withdrew from circuit work in 1873 and spent the last six years of his life raising money for Worn out Ministers' and Ministers' Widows' Auxiliary Fund. 44 lines, dated March 5th, 1831. Wolverhampton.Boldly signed, the 40 line text consists of a poetic paraphrase of the 137th Psalm, apparently written by Rattenbury himself. Slight, Frederick. A well-regarded early 19th century Wesleyan divine. Emory-Pitt hold him in their image archive of important early Methodists etc.44 lines, July 28th, 1832. Wolverhampton.The whole consisting of a paraphrase of Luke 2:8-14 in poetic verse, again, presumably composed impromptu by the author.Lieder, John Rudolph Theophilus (1798-1865). Born in Prussia, Lieder was an important pioneering Church Missionary Society missionary in Egypt. After 35 years labor in Egypt, he contracted Cholera and died in the field he had already given his life to. A very rare and important autograph.6 lines, November 20th, 1832. Exeter.The things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.Newton, Robert (1780-1854). An important early Methodist. He began his itinerancy in 1799. He was a close friend and partner in the fray with Jabez Bunting and, in addition to serving 4 times as President of the Conference, was its longest serving Secretary of the Conference. He was easily the most popular Methodist preacher of the era and was always noted for his evangelical, experimental and practical style.9 lines, May 1, 1834. Upon his return to ITaly (1859) he was twice Giuseppe Garibaldi's army chaplain (1860,1866). Later he organized in Rome the Free Christian Church in Italy, also known as the Evangelical Church in Italy. He was instrumental in the foothold of Evangelicalism in Italy. 5 lines, June 1880. First edition of Sanquirico's synoptic collection of his work, complete in 62 plates, never sold in the regular book trade and presented by the artist only to highest dignitaries. "La grandiosa collezione del Sanquirico, in fogli di grande formato, stampati e colorati con estrema cura, era evidentemente destinata a clienti 'facoltosi'" (Ferrero). In 1818 Sanquirico set out to publish all the theatre decorations he had executed. The inked and coloured series of etchings was completed in 1829. Sanquirico is considered the best stage designer of his time. From 1817 to 1832 he was "scenografico unico" at the Milano "Scala", where he was much admired for his inexhaustible production of new creations. "He is a master of perspective, and a painter of the finest taste; capable of creating magical effects through colour and light. Every one of his decorations is possessed of a unique magic and rich versatility of invention. There was not an opera in which Sanquirico, apart from the celebrated singers, did not also celebrate his triumph" (Nagler). Général et homme politique français, né à Marcq (Ardennes) le 26 avril 1774, mort à Paris le 2 juin 1833. Nommé officier dordonnance de Pichegru, puis de Moreau, Savary se fit remarquer par sa bravoure au passage du Rhin, à Freiberg en Saxe, et obtint alors le grade de chef descadron (1797). Desaix, avec qui il se lia à cette époque, layant pris pour aide de camp, il laccompagna dans toutes ses campagnes, à larmée du Rhin, en Egypte (1798-1800) et en Italie, sur le champ de bataille de Marengo. Savary devint lhomme de confiance de Napoléon ; Il fut chargé notamment de découvrir les auteurs de lenlèvement du comte Clément de Ris et daller secrètement en Vendée pour y découvrir les complices de Cadoudal. Nommé, en 1800, colonel et commandant de la gendarmerie délite, chargé de veiller à la sûreté du premier consul, il devint en même temps directeur dun bureau de police secrète. Savary présida à lexécution du duc dEnghien et sopposa, au rapport du général Hulin, à ce que le duc eût, selon son désir, un entretien avec Bonaparte. Général de division et grand officier de la Légion dhonneur en 1805, il fit avec Napoléon les campagnes de 1805 et de tantôt comme général, tantôt comme diplomate. Il fut appelé à succéder à Fouché comme ministre de la police. Investi, à la fin de 1831, du commandement en chef des troupes françaises en Algérie, il resta dans ce pays jusquà ce que la maladie à laquelle il succomba leût obligé à revenir en France en 1833(Larousse XIXeme). Bel ensemble, complet.

Complet de tous les numéros. Tampon de "Timbre Royal" apposé sur chaque "Journal". Le Journal des Dames et des Modes paraît tous les 5 jours, contient 8 pp. de texte et 2 gravures (8 par mois, six costumes féminins, un costume masculin et une planche de chapeaux). Cet hebdomadaire a paru de 1797 à 1839. La parution de ce journal correspond à la reprise de la presse féminine après la Terreur. La mode Directoire est particulièrement riche et ses excentricités justifient pleinement la création d'un nouveau journal. Pierre de la Mésangère en devient le directeur et la longévité de sa revue fera dire à ses contemporains : "A celui-là [Napoléon] la conquête de l'Europe masculine l'Europe féminine échut à celui-ci. Et faut-il le dire, Napoléon a perdu ses conquêtes, celles de M de la Mésangère nous sont restées." De 1797 à 1831, le titre du périodique n'est pas indiqué sur les planches, détachées du texte pour les identifier, on trouve au centre la mention "Costume Parisien", au pluriel s'il y a plusieurs costumes. Des plumes de qualité y participent, comme BALZAC a ses débuts (de manière anonyme), ou VERNET. Les planches 2657, 2658 et 2659, mentionnées dans le 1er numéro, manquent. Restaurations au dos, quelques usures à la couverture.

Small 8vo, contemporary black morocco, skillfully rebacked, gilt decorations and lettering, a.e.g. Frontis portrait after a portrait by R. Reading. Bound in before the portrait is a ten-page manuscript of Monceieff's poem "An Allegory," signed and dated September 20, 1845. A collection of about 100 poems in several forms by the playwright, theatre manager, miscellaneous writer and apparently occasional printer, as well. Moncrieff (1794-1857) was a self-described "hack," and a prolific one, who specialized in adapting novels for the stage and who made what little money he could in theatre and literary work of any kind. A few years after this volume was published, Moncrieff began struggling with progressive blindness. Poems contains sonnets, songs, ballads, epigrams and madrigals, mostly on the subject of unrequited love, something at which Moncrieff appears to have had a great deal of experience. At the foot of the final page of text is the imprint "W. T. Moncrieff, Typ. Saville House, Lamberth." Inscribed at the head of the title-page "To J. Miles Esqr / With the Author's best acknowledgements." The manuscript poems go into length about the aging process and loss of sight and is certainly in part autobiographical.

He had been selected for this position because he was an outstanding chemist; and his initial studies were on the chemical aspects of dyes and dyeing, attempting to place the art of dyeing on a more rational basis than the complicated and empirical procedures then employed. He embarked upon a thorough study of the natural properties of natural dyes and between 1838 and 1864 published several important papers in the Mémoires de l'Académie des Sciences, reviewing the chemistry and technology of dyeing. On sait que le Comte et la Comtesse de Laubespin étaient des amis de l'auteur. Stendhal a parfois désigné dans les "Souvenirs d'Egotisme" Madame Emmanuel de Laubespin sous le nom de Madame de Moncertin. Voir l'exemplaire de la première édition du Rouge et le Noir avec la même provenance, vendue en 2004 qui portait de la main de Stendhal un envoi autographe. Edition originale.

A good clean copy of this scarce and beautiful work. Charles McIntosh, 1794-1864, a native of Perthshire, was an 'outstanding authority on horticulture, having been head gardener to several noblemen,' including Prince Leopold of Belgium. There are thirty-six plates of fruits and thirty-five of flowers, all beautifully rendered and coloured, 'the last of their kind in pomonological literature in this country' (The Fruit Yearbook, 1958). Bella ed elegante legatura del tempo (seconda metà dell'800) in pieno marocchino rosso, dorsi a nervi con titoli e fregi, piatti inquadrati da vari ordini di filetti in oro, dentelles interne e tagli superiori dorati. Legatura: bound by Ramage London. Esemplare ben conservato e con legatura in ottimo stato di conservazione. Seconda edizione di quest'opera, l'unica del tempo che tratta in modo ampio un tema così affascinante: la ricerca bibliografica. L'autore si dilunga infatti nella descrizioni di tutte le sue scoperte in tema di libri antichi, ricercati e trovati durante il suo viaggio. Tratta delle biblioteche visitate, dei mercati di libri antichi, elenca manoscritti e incunaboli e impreziosisce il racconto con aneddoti divertenti. Esemplare impreziosito da una legatura assai decorativa eseguita da John Ramage, allievo di Lortic ed attivo a Parigi ed a Londra (dal 1860).
