A particularly attractive copy of the 1829 New Edition of Pilkington's standard reference work, revised with introduction and new additions by Alan Cunningham. Matthew Pilkington (1701-1784) was a church minister and poet who studied at Trinity College. His poetry caught the eye of Jonathan Swift he was appointed chaplain to John Barber, the Mayor of London. In mid 1750, after his public and dramatic divorce, Pilkington began a relationship with the family of Charles Cobbe, advising them in their acquisitions for their collection for their Newbridge Estate. It was in 1770 that Pilkington published The Gentleman's and Connoisseur's Dictionary of Painters. The first of its kind in England, the work contained biographies of Artists and a study of the art market in England and the Netherlands. Pilkington's work was used as a standard reference for most of the nineteenth century until the appearance of Byran's Dictionary of Painters and Engravers (1816), which is known to have used Pilkington as a foundation. The set includes around 1400 entries, with a particular focus on Italian painters which reflects their popularity at the time. There are also entries for artists well known to Pacific exploration and colonial history such as John Webber and John Clevely.

        German Folk Art Manuscript Breviary

1829. A breviary, or devotional book, done entirely by hand, filled with simple, or naive, vignettes exemplifying the folk art traditions of rural Germany -- also known as "Fraktur" -- in the early nineteenth century. The cursive script is done by a steady, painstakingly meticulous hand, and thus attains the fluidity and regularity of calligraphy, although the shape of some letters is unlike more modern script and thus reading the text will be a challenge to many readers nowadays. The artlessness of the art is much of the appeal, but one would be wrong to think of the author/compiler as a mere bumpkin. The mere act of composing such a prayer aid would distinguish him from most of the population at a time when illiteracy was still rife. He also paginated his manuscript. There are 102 pages, each a compact 14 by 9 cm, or 5.5 by 3.5 inches. The manuscript ends with a most charming touch -- a flap that one pulls away from a wreath, and a cameo portrait, possibly of the author, above. The flap appears to have the author's name, Anton, and a surname which oddly can not be made out because the letters are alien to us.

Boxiana; Or Sketches Of Modern Pugilism, During The Championship Of Cribb To Spring's Challenge To All England (volume Iii)

G Virtue 1829 - Pierce Egan (1772-1849) was a journalist, sportswriter, and commentator on popular culture. He wrote first about boxing in his serial publication, Boxiana, or Sketches of Ancient and Modern Pugilism, in which he coined the description of boxing as "the sweet science". Boxiana was issued both in seperate parts and volumes between 1812 and 1829, as well as in single volumes and in sets in later days. Pierce Egan produced three volumes for Sherwood, Neely and Jones, the first two in 1818 and the third in 1821. John Bee wrote a further single volume in 1824, also published by S.N.&J., which was the designated fourth volume. Egan wrote the fourth and fifth volumes in his series in 1828-29 which were published by George Virtue. Finally, there was a volume issued around 1840 consisting solely of plates from all previous volumes of Boxiana. 1st thus Vol. 3;  638pp. Frontis of Tom Spring + 5 further plates (lacks the plate of Tom Oliver ). Sandahl gives a detailed description of the chambers in Stockholm and their use, a bibliography with ca. 30 titles on the subject, and discusses the effects of the inhalation and the treatment of various disorders, including emphysema and asthma. Illustrated with empirical tables and a detailed view of a hyperbaric chamber. With a presentation inscription from Jon Fattaren(?) to Doctor Otto Witt on the wrapper. Foxed, primarily in the margins and on the first two pages, but otherwise in good condition. With a few pencil notes in the text. Wrappers with some spots and a few minor tears. Scarce work on 19th-century hyperbaric oxygen therapy in Stockholm.

Cousin Thomas, or the Swan River Job

Thomas McLean: [?16] June, 1829. Etching, 350 x 250 mm., with original handcolouring; a fine, bright impression, margins restored. FINISHED. Thomas Peel and the Swan River settlement. A fine impression, with excellent original handcolouring, of this rare caricature. The target of this broadside was Thomas Peel (1793-1865) one of the very early settlers of Western Australia. In 1828 Thomas and three others formed a consortium to settle a colony at the Swan River, eventually being granted one million acres - significantly less than the four million acres originally planned. As a result of this restriction, the other members of the consortium withdrew early in 1829, but Peel persisted, ultimately arriving aboard the Gilmore the same year with 300 settlers. The settlement was beset by delays in the arrival of necessary supplies, poor planning, and a difficult relationship with local aboriginal tribes. In the end, most of Peel's fellow settlers drifted back to Fremantle, but Peel stayed on, becoming an iconic figure on his enormous holding of some 250,000 acres. The cartoon, however, speaks to contemporary fears that the deal for Swan River was rife with family influence: Thomas Peel's cousin happened to be Sir Robert Peel, at that time Home Secretary, hence the references to "Peeling" and the exclamation that 'Cousin Bob's letter did the job I shall feather my nest however.' To the left of Thomas is a sign post 'The best parts of the Swan River Settlement only to be got at through the hands of Mr. Thos P-l!!' The image was executed by Robert Seymour, a caricaturist and artist who would later work on the early stages of Dickens' Pickwick Papers, although the two had a volatile professional relationship: indeed, Seymour shot and killed himself directly following an argument with Dickens, and the latter made a concerted attempt to downplay the artist's involvement in the development of the book. Seymour worked with the publisher of the current image, Thomas Maclean, for a decade, mastering the new technique of etching on steel plates. This caricature is typical of his work and of the hard-biting political cartoons of the day. Although the English colourists evidently did not know that the swans of Swan River were black, the engraver did include two minute kangaroos on the horizon.

The Kangaroos in the Collection of Earl Darnley, Cobham Park

London: Thomas Kelly, 1 May, 1829. Engraving, 175 x 265 mm., trimmed inside the plate-mark on three sides, but the image complete including caption and imprint; a few marks, very good. William Bligh's kangaroos. Interesting early depiction of kangaroos brought to England and given to the private collection of the Earl of Darnley: although the plate was made in 1829, the actual animals were some of those brought back alive from Australia by William Bligh when he returned to England on the Hindostan after being ousted from the governorship in 1810. The animals were given to John Bligh, 4th Earl of Darnley (1767-1831), a British peer and cricketer; his family house Cobham Hall near Gravesend in Kent is one of the grandest houses in the county. William Bligh and the Earl were certainly known to each other: an 1805 letter from William Bligh written just before he left for New South Wales in 1805 is in the Mitchell Library (perhaps there was a Bligh family connection between the two?). The plate is taken from Robert Huish's The Wonders of the Animal Kingdom (1830), where it is noted that the kangaroos 'appeared for some time to endure the climate of Cobham Hall with every expectation of their being eventually naturalized; from some cause, however, not yet ascertained, they died a few months after their portrait was taken…'. Huish's note concludes with the comment that nonetheless 'some very fine specimens of them are still to be seen in the collection of his Majesty, at Windsor, and in some of the itinerant menageries.'.

Samling af 50 smaae Landkort I Træsnit til Brug for Skolerne paa Landet . [Collection of 50 small maps in woodcut for the use of the schools in the country]

[Denmark]: S.E. Holm, 1829. Small quarto, with 50 leaves of wood-engraved maps, handcoloured in outline; a very good copy in contemporary half calf, some wear to boards and extremities, slight worming at top of gutter barely affecting some of the plates, and some inoffensive early manuscript annotations. Charming world atlas for school children. A very rare Danish atlas for schools, the first such work published, with a wonderful double-page world map, and another plate depicting Australia and the Pacific. This simple but charming work was published by a Danish school teacher called Søren Eliasen Holm, who himself paid for the printing and publishing of the atlas. His main purpose was to give poor village children an idea about geography, and it was much republished in newer, often improved, editions. Not much is known about the enigmatic Holm, although the extraordinary and disturbing fact is recorded that he was banned from the education system in 1814 after he castrated himself to avoid having more children. As would be expected, many of the maps are devoted to Scandinavia and Europe, including 28 of various regions of Denmark and the Danish Islands. The atlas does include several attractive plates of the rest of the world: apart from the Australian map, there are also maps of individual European countries including Great Britain, France, and Turkey, as well as the continent of Africa, and the Americas (this last bound in upside down). Most of the maps are signed by Holm, and dated from 1818 to 1826; the Australian map is dated 1823. The atlas was released in numerous edition between 1819 and at least 1840, with the online catalogues of Det Kongelige Bibliotek recording a series of copies. The work is not, however, well known outside Denmark, with OCLC unable to list any copies of any edition.
