Tamerlane and Al Aaraaf, as printed in The Yankee; and Boston Literary Gazette for 1829

Wells and Lilly Boston 1829 - Tall Octavo, contemporary 3/4 leather, leather spine label reading in gilt 'Yankee and Miscellany', marbled boards, frontis portrait of Jeremy Bentham. Bound volume II, July to December, 1829, of John Neal's Yankee Magazine. Extremely uncommon first appearance of Poe in a literary journal. Neal's review of Poe's poem, Fairyland in the September issue provided Poe with his first public encouragement: "E. A. P. of Baltimore -- whose lines about 'Heaven,' though he professes to regard them as altogether superior to any thing in the whole range of American poetry, save two or three trifles referred to, are, though nonsense, rather exquisite nonsense Ñ would but do himself justice, might make a beautiful and perhaps magnificent poem. There is a good deal to justify such a hope." An extract of Fairyland follows. The December issue includes lengthy excerpts from 'Al Aaraaf', 'Tamerlane', and 'To ÑÑ' and a very positive review of the yet unpublished work, Al Aaraaf, the result of which was the collections publication. Poe would dedicate that volume to Neal in a show of his appreciation. Later half of volume is bound in several political pamphlets, including William Penn's Essays on the Present Crisis in the Condition of the American Indians; first published in the National Intelligencer. Boston: Perkins and Marvin, 1829. 112 pp; Speech of Daniel Webster, in Reply to Mr. Hayne, of South Carolina. Relative to The Public Lands. Washington: Gales and Seaton, 1830. 96 pp; Remarks of Mr. Webster in the Senate of the United States, May 9, 1828, on the Tariff Bill. Boston: Boston Daily Advertiser, 1828. 48 pp; Committee Review by Hon. Mr. Johnson of Kentucky, 1829. A textually Very Good volume, text block firmly bound, expected foxing, lower fore-edge corner mildly bumped, two front endpapers and frontis detached along with front cover, rear hinge starting, spine leather dry and chipped at ends.         15 autograph letters, (22pp. of text plus address leaves) + 2 portraits

Paris, 1829-1837. <p>Boivin, Marie Anne Victoire (1773-1841). Series of 15 autograph letters signed, mostly to her publisher Bailliere, plus 1 engraved and 1 lithographed portrait. 22 - 1/4pp. total (not including integral address leaves). Various sizes. Paris and Versailles, Feb. 6, 1829 - Dec. 4, 18[37?]. Creased where originally folded, light browning, portion of first letter cut away, occasional soiling.</p><p> Boivin, one of France&#39;s most celebrated midwives, studied midwifery at the Hospice de la Maternite under Mme. Lachappelle, and eventually rose to the post of Superintendent-in-Chief of midwifery at the Maison royale de sante. She was the author of several works on obstetrics and gynecology, including three classic treatises: Memoriale de l&#39;art des accouchements (1812; later editions 1817, 1824, 1836; Garrison-Morton 6165); Nouvelles recherches sur l&#39;origine, la nature et le traitement de la mole vesiculaire ou grossesse hydatique (1827; Garrison-Morton 6172); and Traite pratique des maladies de l&#39;uterus et de ses annexes (1833, with Antoine Duges; Garrison-Morton 6028). She also improved the speculum, and was one of the first surgeons to amputate the cervix uteri for cancer, a procedure described in her 1833 Traite. For her many achievements she was awarded an honorary M.D. by the University of Marburg. </p><p> Boivin&#39;s original publisher was Mequignon l&#39;aine, who issued both the first three editions of the Memoriale and the 1827 Nouvelles recherches. After Mequignon&#39;s death (referred to in passing in the present correspondence) Boivin switched to the firm of Bailliere, who published the 1833 Traite and the 1836 edition of the Memoriale, as well as her Recherches sur une des causes les plus frequentes et la moins connue de l&#39;avortement, suivies d&#39;un mÈmoire sur l&#39;intropelvimetre ou mensurateur interne du basin (1828).</p><p> The bulk of the present correspondence discusses issues relating to the publication of her 1833 and 1836 works: problems with the plates, requests for author&#39;s copies (a recurring theme in the correspondence), advertising and reviews, accounting issues, etc. Three letters in particular stand out. The first is that of Nov. 2, 1832, relating to the publication of the 1833 Traite, in which Boivin asks Bailliere to send to her co-author Duges an extract from Barron&#39;s Delineations (a work we have not been able to identify) prior to printing the Traite&#39;s important chapter on cancer. The second is that of July 19, 1836, referring to the publication of the 1836 Memoriale, in which Boivin complains that the book will be published too late to distribute to students at the beginning of the academic year, requests proofs of all printed sheets "jusqu&#39;a la 21e" (up to the 21st) so that she can work on the table des matieres and the plate register, and describes the additions she has made to the work as being not very great, so that it will not be much larger than the previous edition. The third is Boivin&#39;s letter of August 29, 1836, in which Boivin takes Bailliere to task for not supplying her with the number of author&#39;s copies of the 1833 Traite that she believes herself entitled to, an omission that has left her unable to supply copies to medical societies and individuals. This letter, one of the longest in the collection, includes Boivin&#39;s account of the costs associated with publishing the Traite, in which she declares that Bailliere owes her ten complete copies of the work. The difficulties referred to here, which had caused a "refroidissement" between Boivin and Bailliere, were apparently resolved, as in later letters she resumes the cordial tone she had previously used with her publisher.</p><p>A complete list of the letters follows: </p><p> Feb. 6, 1829: 1 pageplus address leaf requesting 2 copies of her treatise on uterine hemorrhage (1819)</p><p> Jan. 16, 1830: 1 page plus address leaf paying illustrators and what she owes Bailliere </p><p>Dec. 28, 1830: 1 page plus address leaf requesting Andral&#39;s Clinique medicale and Schlegel&#39;s Beaux Arts. Boivin&#39;s proposed addition to a second edition of Dailliez&#39;s thesis on prolapsed uterus</p><p>N.d. [1832]: 1 page plus address leaf requesting author&#39;s copies of the Traite<p><p> Oct. 17, 1832: 1-1/4 pages plus address leaf author&#39;s copies; poor coloration of plates</p><p> Nov. 2, 1832: 1 page plus address leaf advertising publication of the Traite. Barron&#39;s work to be sent to Duges (see above) </p><p>June 7, 1834: 2 pages plus address leaf reviews/advertisements of the Traite in the Constitutionale and the Temps </p><p> N.d. [1834]: 2 pages re judging the merits of 2 candidates (for an unspecified reason) </p><p>March 29, 1836: 2 pages plus address leaf re plates; accounting issues; present and future whereabouts </p><p>April 19, [1836]: 1 page plus address leaf: plate issues</p><p>July 19, 1836: 3 pages plus address see above </p><p>August 27, 1836: 3 pages plus address see above</p><p>N.d. 1 page, ordering lithographs of the hydatid mole and the pelvimeter</p><p> Oct. 18, n.y. [1836?]: 1 page, setting up a meeting / interview </p><p>Dec. 4, n.y. [1836?]: 1 page plus address leaf: thank-you note addressed to M. and Mme. Meaux de St. Marc </p><p>The two portraits included with this correspondence show Boivin in middle age. The lithograph includes a brief list of Boivin&#39;s titles and honors.         Collection of six scarce works on navigation, hydrography, meteorology, and astronomy published at Nantes.

Nantes: Victor Mangin, & Imprimerie Mellinet, 1829-33 - Octavo (198 × 124 mm). Contemporary quarter calf, imitation tree calf boards, black morocco label, edges stained yellow. Neatly rebacked with the original spine laid down, variable foxing and browning, but overall very good. Folding lithographed map and 3 folding lithographic plates, one hand-coloured plate on thin card stock, attractive wood-engraved illustrations and devices to the text. First editions of a group of rather eccentric theoretical papers on a range of matters maritime by an "ancien marin Nantaise", based in his experiences as a ship's captain in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans. In his introduction to the first "opuscule" Fruneau insists that he is not seeking patronage (Certes! l'intérêt ni autres motifs n'ont aucune part à cet ouvrage), but merely to please the public eye (curiosité publique) by passing along, in the harsh and hard (âpre et dur) language of the sea, some little-known, or even unknown "circonstances" and his theories about them, based entirely on my own observations (les systèmes qui en dépendant sont les fruits de mes seules observations). (1832). Copies of these are recorded in the BnF and the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle only. The pagination of these works is somewhat erratic, and there are a number of brief insertions, including a two-page Notice which is signed and has six lines in Fruneau's hand, relating to his presentation of a collection of his "ouvrages" to M. Hyde de Neuville, Ministre de la Marine. As he has explained, the origins of Fruneau's speculations are firmly rooted in his thirty years' experience as an officer on merchant ships. The first paper, which covers his theories on tempests, includes a highly-detailed lithographed map of the Philippines and adjacent islands, and three superb plates of incidents in the surrounding seas. The map has been heavily annotated identifying additional islands and hazards, and with historical and topographical notes. It speaks well of his cartographic skills and local knowledge that the British National Archives hold two manuscript charts of the Philippines by Fruneau (ADM 352/40 and 41) dated to the 1780s, and formerly in the Admiralty Hydrographic Department.         Jadis et aujourd&#146;hui.

Paris: Delpech, 1829.Title from front wrapper. Oblong folio (Plate size: 10 3/4 x 14 inches; 274 x 356 mm.; Wrapper size: 11 5/8 x 16 1/8 inches; 296 x 410 mm.). Eighteen hand-colored lithographed plates, depicting bankruptcy, childhood, dressing, the boudoir, a physician, an attorney, the promenade, an evening gathering, etc. ,"then" and "now."Loose, as issued, in the original cream-colored lithographed wrappers. Spine of wrappers neatly repaired. The plates are very clean, with only minimal edge browning. Two tiny tears to the right margin of the plate "Aujourd&#146;hui. Etude d&#146;avoué." A wonderful copy of this extremely scarce series of plates.Scarce, with no copies in institutional holdings worldwide, nor auction records within the last thirty-six years."Between 1825 and 1827 Monnier passed much of his time in London, where he collaborated with Lami in what was to become the Voyage en Angleterre. On his return to Paris he embarked on a series of albums in which he recorded the manners and humors of the city with unprecedented profusion. Between 1826 and 1830 he satisfied the insatiable demand for his designs with almost 500 lithographs, nearly all of which were drawn with a pen and colored by hand. For each design he himself colored a master print and carefully supervised its subsequent preparation Some of the salient titles in his human comedy may be mentioned. There are potpourris like Recréations du coeur et de l&#146;esprit, Paris vivant, and Rencontres Parisiennes. Macédoine pittoresque. There are more closely focussed surveys like Les grisettes, Moeurs administratives, Galerie théâtrale, Boutiques de Paris, and Six Quartiers de Paris.         The History of Little Henry and His Bearer

London - F. Houlston and Son, 1829 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A nice copy of Mary MarthaSherwood&#39;s popular childrens&#39; book. Twenty-Fifth Edition. With frontispiece and additional illustrated title. The History of Little Henry and his Bearer (1814) was written by Mary Martha Sherwood. It was continuously in print for 70 years after its initial publication and was translated into French, German, Spanish, Hindustani (1814; 1873), Chinese, Marathi (1853), Tamil (1840), and Sinhalese. Telling the story of a young British boy who, on his deathbed, converts Boosy, the Indian man who has taken care of him throughout his childhood, the book is dominated by imperialistic and evangelical themes. Sherwood&#39;s tale blends the realistic with the sentimental and introduces her readers to Hindustani words and descriptions of what she felt was authentic Indian life. Mary Martha Sherwood (ne Butt) (6 May 1775 22 September 1851) was a prolific and influential writer of children&#39;s literature in 19th-century Britain. She composed over 400 books, tracts, magazine articles, and chapbooks. Condition: In decorative full calf binding. Externally very good, just a little shelfwear. Front hinge has been reinforced. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and clean throughout with just the odd spot or ink blot. Foxing to frontis and illustrated title. Copperplate ink signature to front free-endpaper dated 1834. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.

A CHRONICLE OF THE CONQUEST OF GRANADA. FROM THE MSS. OF FRAY ANTONIO AGAPIDA.

London: John Murray, 1829. - Two volumes. Full contemporary calf, preserving the half-title in the first volume (none called for in second). Spines quite browned and worn, with large chip from crown of second, scattered foxing (occasionally moderate), otherwise a very good set. First British edition, succeeding the American edition, but publishing a variant text. Inscribed by Irving: "To Christopher Hughes Esq from his friend Washington Irving London, Nov. 19 - 1829," on the half-title to the first volume, and inscribed again on the title-page of the second volume. The recipient, at the time of the inscription, was charge d'affaires under J.Q. Adams to the court of the Netherlands, and in the course of his diplomatic service, was much in the circle of expatriate American diplomats and artists which Irving frequented during his European sojourn. Throughout his diplomatic service, "he won for himself at all his posts a unique place in the inner circle of social and diplomatic life" - DNB. Early Irving presentation copies, particularly those as meaningful as the present, are scarce. BAL 10126.

COLLECTION OF FRENCH NAVIGATIONAL MANUSCRIPTS CONCERNING THE ANTILLES AND SURROUNDING AREA].

[Np, but probably Paris. ca. ]. 1829 - Three manuscripts. 13; 17; 17pp. plus manuscript map. The first two manuscripts in folio, the third in octavo. All, save the single-sheet map, in self-wrappers. Uniformly bright and clean. Very good. In a cloth clamshell case. An interesting early 19th-century assemblage of manuscripts concerning navigation near the Antilles and Venezuela. They are: 1) ROUTIER DES ANTILLES, DES CÔTES DE TERRE FERME ET DE CELLES DU GOLFE DE MEXIQUE, TRADUIT DE ESPAGNOL. Translated from the Spanish by ensign J.C. Chaucheprat, this manuscript offers a description of the Cartegena coast and lengthy navigational directions for entering Veracruz. A version of Chaucheprat's text was published as early as 1842. OCLC 17658994 (ref). 2) DESCRIPTION DE LA PARTIE DE LA CÔTE FERME QUI S'ÉTEND DEPUIS LA POINTE ESPADA JUSQU'À CARTHAGÈNE. Translated from a Spanish "derrotero," a type of sea chart, this manuscript offers navigational tips similar to the previous document, though here the emphasis is on various landmarks, including those near Salamanca and others. 3) DESCRIPTION DE LA CÔTE DE CARACAS ET DES ÎLES VOISINES, DEPUIS LE CAP CODERA JUSQU'À CELUI DE SAN ROMAN. A collection of pithy descriptions of various locales in the Antilles, including Caracas, Aruba, Cape Codera, Curaçao, and others. 4) [Manuscript Map of Madame Island]. Executed in what was known as "Chinese ink," this map offers what is, essentially, a navigational chart for the waters surrounding the island, including various hazards and a scale. A delightful collection of maritime manuscripts, obviously executed with great care. Good evidence of the navigational sources with which French pilots were familiar.

CHRONICLE OF THE CONQUEST OF GRANADA. From the Mss. of Fray Antonio Agapida

London John Murray 1829 - 2 volumes. First English edition. 8vo, antique three-quarter red calf over marbled boards. The spines with gilt stippled raised bands creating compartments framed in both gilt and blind, with two blue morocco labels ruled and lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. xv, 407; viii, 421 pp. A very nice set, internally fine and fresh and very clean, the bindings sturdy and attractive with only a bit of expected age evidence. FIRST EDITION, THE ENGLISH ISSUE, which appeared only a few weeks after the American. In spite of the near simultaneous release, the text of this English edition does differ a bit from its American counterpart. Despite Irving's use of an imaginary chronicler, Agapida, who&#146;s dialog livens up the flavor of the text, the CONQUEST OF GRANADA was the product of careful historical research in Madrid. Irving was serving as a titular diplomat, a post which gave him access to considerable resources as well as access to the most important inner social circles. It remains an excellent history on the expulsion of the Moors from Spain. This work, along with his THE ALHAMBRA highlights both Irving&#146;s scholarly abilities and his eloquent writing style.       1829 - A Paris, chez J.-G. Dentu, 1829. Trois volumes in-8 (142 X 216) demi-maroquin violine, dos quatre nerfs ornés de filets perlés et sertis de filets dorés, auteur, titre et tomaison dorés, fleuron doré dans les compartiments (reliure de l'époque) ; TOME I : faux-titre, titre, CVII pages (préface), 398 pages ; TOME II : faux-titre, titre, 662 pages, 1 feuillet (errata) ; TOME III : faux-titre, titre, 621 pages, 3 pages non chiffrées (catalogue éditeur). EDITION ORIGINALE. NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. Kensington [1?]0 May 182.'A History of the Protestant Reformation describes at great length the means employed by the state to dispossess the English poor, beginning with the crown's appropriation of church lands during the Reformation. It first appeared in two parts (1824-7) was a bestseller and was several times reprinted, including in this second edition (preceded by at least one stereotyped reprint).         Analysis of the Phenomena of the Human Mind.

Baldwin and Cradock, London 1829 - Volume 1: TP + [iii]-iv + [1]-320; Volume 2: TP + [iii]-iv + [1]-312; Octavo.James Mill studied philosophy under Dugald Stewart and (with Bentham) is the bridge between that older school of Scottish philosophy and the fully-formulated Utilitarianism of his son, John Stuart Mill. This work was Mill's major philosophical contribution - his other major works being historical, The History of British India (1817) and economic, Elements of Political Economy (1821). In this philosophical and psychological book, he supports and elaborates the asssociationist epistemology of Hartley and Hume and attempts to exlain all mental phenomena in terms of association. Unfortunately the signature on each volume is NOT that of English radical politician and etymologist John Horne Tooke who died in 1812 - 17 years before this book was published. More's the pity since Tooke was the author of The Diversions of Purley (London, 1776). Two volumes bound in original boards. Surprisingly, the exterior of volume 1 is of a darker color than the boards and spine of volume 2. This does not look to be the result of sunning but simply the way that the books were originally bound. (Note that both volumes are signed on the front end paper in contemporary brown ink: "J. Tooke / 1829" providing further evidence that this was the original state of these books.) Both volumes have worn and lightly stained boards with bumped corners. The spine of each has the original printed paper label. On volume one, the paper label is about 50% readable. The label on volume 2 is about 75% readable. The first volume has a very light water stain to lower edge of the inside front cover and a darker, corresponding stain (uneven along the bottom 4" of the page) to the front fly leaf. The rest of both books (including the TP's) are fresh, bright and clean but for some very occasional contemporary pencil marginalia. Uncommon in any condition, these books have had some truly expert restoration work to the spines, making for a charming set of this important work by James Mill. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.         The Celtic Druids Or, An Attempt To Shew, That The Druids Were The Priests Of Oriental Colonies Who Emigrated From India, and were the introducers of the first or Cadmean system of letters, and the builders of Stonehenge, of Carnac, and of other cyclopean works, in Asia and Europe

Rowland Hunter, London 1829 - This book was issued in 1827 in a shorter form with fewer plates. This 1829 2nd issue edition has a new preface, the original preface, and also contains the 1827 title page in addition to its 1829 title page. There is an errata sheet (additional corrigenda) plus a small, additional errata sheet tipped in behind the first. Profusely illustrated (B&W) with maps and drawings, with 45 full page illustrations, plus a full page map, plus smaller wood vignettes at the beginning of each chapter and smaller tipped-in vignettes at the end of each chapter. It includes 4 magnificent fold out maps of Stonehenge, Abury, and Carnac (standing stones and stone circles), all in excellent condition with an occasional light foxing spot. There are comparisons of the Hebrew, Sanskrit, Druid and Latin alphabets. 324 pages including Appendix and Index, and including an explanation of the vignettes. There are some small, light foxing spots on some pages but they're not obtrusive aside from pages 68-69, which have a small area of the inner, upper portion of each page darkened from a 1929 news clipping laid in about King Kalakaua's Masonic membership scroll being found in Oakland, CA. There is also laid in a small piece of paper (lovely handwriting) talking about Druids and Welsh legends, a 1870 note about this book on the back of a Grover's 'soft shoes for tender feet' ad, and an 1866 bookseller's (Mr. Benton) note to George Gibson, whose name is inscribed on a front end page, agreeing to sell him this book for $20, as seen in Mr. Benton's cataogue No. 20. A few preliminary pages are unopened at the top. The book is bound in the original dark green cloth with a paper label on the spine. There are some very small areas of bubbling to the cloth, some edge wear to the binding mostly at spine ends, some small areas of paper only slits at gutters (not affecting binding integrity), and some wear to the edges of and fading to the spine label, though still quite legible. Clean, tightly bound, complete, and in solid very good plus condition. ; Drawings, Plates & Maps; 11-1/2" x 9-1/4"; 324 pages [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Esemplare genuino e ben conservato. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
