Reponding to attacks of the Jesuits on the Jansenists and especially on Antoine Arnauld, Pascal wrote this very effective defence and counter-attack on the code of ethics of the Jesuits. It was very popular and placed on the "Index" in 1660. Anti-Catholic sentiment in America was strengthened in the 1820's encouraged by the dis-information disseminated by the British anti-Catholics fighting the Catholic Emancipation Act (1829) and the repeal of the Test Act (1828) and aggravated by the increase of Catholic immigrants. Astrology ] RAPHAEL ( Robert Cross Smith ).
C. S. Arnold, London, 1828. Hardcover. Octavo. (ii [of iv]pp. prelims) (v)-xiv, (15-16) (ii - plate) (17) -256pp. Late nineteenth century half-leather binding, black leather over marbled paper boards, gilt titling to spine. Engraved title page with hand-coloured vignette, and two engraved plates one of which is hand-coloured. One wood-cut diagram, and numerous engraved diagrams of astrological charts etc. The work's pseudonymous author was Robert Cross Smith (1795-1832), the first of six nineteenth-century popularisers of astrology to use the pen-name Raphael. Smith was an alchemist and astrologer with a broad interest in the occult, who supported himself by publishing astrological books and journals. He was clearly influenced by Francis Barrett's "The Magus," and is said to have been a member of an occult circle run by Barrett to which Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton also belonged. Bristol-born Smith edited an aptly-titled journal, The Straggling Astrologer, which failed, but was then reborn as the book "The Astrologer Of The Nineteenth Century" in 1824. His fame and popularity slowly grew, and from 1827 to his death he produced an annual astrological almanac, "The Prophetic Messenger" and published two other works: "The Familiar Astrologer" and the here-listed "A Manual of Astrology," both in 1828. The book was issued with two title-pages, a decorative engraved title page, and a normal typeset title-page. In this example the typeset title page is lacking, but the decorative engraved title-page is present, with the vignette nicely hand coloured. Otherwise it is complete with the … [Click Below for Full Description]

HB. 12 vols, roy. 8vo, cont. qtr leather, marbled boards, heavily scuffed, worn, spines fragile with some loss to head or foot; several joints partly split to top or bottom. Haustellata, Plate 5 (Albin's Hampstead Eye) has been inserted from another copy, cut slightly shorter than the other plates and with a library ink stamp to verso. Some scattered foxing to one volume, otherwise contents good, and plates clean.. Scarce complete set with fine hand-coloured, engraved plates by C.M. Curtis and J.O. Westwood. Mandibulata in 7 vols (39 plates), Haustellata in 4 vols (41 plates), plus Supplement (17 plates).James Francis Stephens (1792-1852) was an English entomologist. Charles Darwin, while a student at the University of Cambridge sent Stephens records of some of the insects he had collected, and was delighted when his contributions were credited in 33 entries, quoting his words in all but two of the cases. Haustellata, Vol. II, p. 200 records the occurrence of the common noctuid moth Graphiphora plecta at Cambridge, and the publishing date for this part is June 1st 1829. Since the record is given in quotation marks it makes it the first publication by Darwin in a book. (Freeman, 1977, pp19-20). Darwin recalled in his autobiography "No poet ever felt more delight at seeing his first poem published than I did at seeing in Stephen's Illustrations of British Insects the magic words, 'captured by C. Darwin, Esq.'".

London: J. Taylor, 1828. First edition. Hardcover. Half title (verso blank), title (verso with imprint), dedication (verso blank), preface pp. v-x. 34 pages in text. Folio, 44 x 30 cm. 42 plates and plans, 26 are hand-colored aquatints. This copy with plates watermarked Whatman 1827 and 1828. Nearly all designs here were executed. Among the finest depictions of country seats of the period, this copy has earlier watermarks than J.R. Abbey's example, ABBEY LIFE 33. COLTON 195.1. "The plates executed in aquatint and hand colored, are among the most handsome in all cottage and villa design books. Each subject, depicted in view and plan, is skillfully integrated with surrounding foliage and distant landscape forms. This is accomplished through effects of light and shadow, conscientiously balanced relationships between natural and built objects, and in some cases a misty haze that creates an effect of atmospheric depth. Frank, Friedrich Anton
1828. Small 40 pp. astronomy book with instructions on how to read the celestial map and tables of constellations, with some handwritten notes at rear of volume, accompanied by a large handcolored lithographed star map in the style of a planisphere, designed by Frank and drawn by Joseph Kaiser, depicting constellations from the North Pole to the 40th latitude, with overlaid volvelle-type component to rotate in order to match up the month, day, and time shown in concentric circles around the outside of the chart, to obtain an accurate depiction of the night sky. Some minor soiling and some scattered foxing to chart. Book 16mo, chart 19 x 20 inches. Book cloth-backed boards, small split along paper label on spine; map lithograph on paper mounted to cardboard. Graz, Austria (Frank) 1828. The first "planisphere" star chart was made in 1625 by the son-in-law of Johannes Kepler, Jacob Bartsch. Planispheres are generally composed of two adjustable disks that rotate on a common point and can be moved to display the visible stars for any given time and date. Its predecessor is the astrolabe. Friedrich Anton Frank was a Slovenian mathematician and professor, and authored several books on astronomy. Incredibly scarce; as of July 2017 WorldCat does not locate a single holding in North America. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Webster, Noah
New York: Published by S. Converse. Printed by Hezekiah Howe, 1828. Rare first edition of Webster's monumental American Dictionary, one of only 2500 copies, with frontispiece portrait of the pioneering lexicographer, in full contemporary calf. Quarto, two volumes, bound in full contemporary calf, marbled endpapers, illustrated frontispiece, tissue guard present. In near fine condition, light toning to the text. Most rare and desirable bound in contemporary calf. An exceptional example, most rare without any restoration. In 1807 Webster began compiling a fully comprehensive dictionary, An American Dictionary of the English Language; it took twenty-eight years to complete. To evaluate the etymology of words, Webster learned twenty-six languages, including Old English (Anglo-Saxon), Greek, Hebrew and Latin. Webster completed his dictionary during his year abroad in 1825 in Paris, France, and at the University of Cambridge. His book contained seventy thousand words, of which twelve thousand had never appeared in a published dictionary before. As a spelling reformer, Webster believed that English spelling rules were unnecessarily complex, so his dictionary introduced American English spellings, replacing colour with color, substituting wagon for waggon, and printing center instead of center. He also added American words, like skunk and squash, that did not appear in British dictionaries. At the age of seventy, Webster published his dictionary in 1828, registering the copyright on April 14. Webster did all this in an effort to standardize the American language. Blouet, G. Abel
1828. 19 pp. introduction to a presentation of 15 exquisite engraved plates (7 fold-out, 2 double side, 1 color) showing the results of the early 19th century excavations by Velo and reconstructions of various buildings within the complex, including sculptural and mosaic fragments and a general plan of the site. Some minor soiling and creasing, some waterstaining to upper corners of several of the text pages. Large folio. Boards, some repairs to spine, minor soiling and abrasions. Paris (Firmin Didot) 1828. The Baths of Caracalla were inaugurated in AD 216 and were in operation until the 530s. In the 5th century they were referred to as one of the seven wonders of Rome, with a daily usage estimated at 6,000 to 8,000 bathers. They eventually fell into a state of ruin from lack of use, and suffered major damage in a significant earthquake in 847. Over the subsequent centuries, the baths were used as a quarry for construction materials, as gardens, and even as a playground. In the 17th and 18th centuries, however, interest in the structure was rekindled, and in 1824, excavations at the baths were overseen by Count Egidio de Velo, followed by restoration work later in the century. Findings included the mosaics of athletes now housed at the Vatican Museums. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
