Les Compensations Composées et Dessinées par Ch. Philipon, Lithographies par Wattier. Paris: Chez Ostervald ainé, Rittner, & Hautecœur, [1828]. First edition. Charles Philipon (1800-1861) was a French lithographer, caricaturist and journalist. He was the editor of La Caricature and of Le Charivari, both of which were satirical political journals. FINDLEY, Samuel (Edited by)
[Self-published?], 1828. First Edition. Sewn binding. Octavo, pp. 293-340 [48pp.]. A good or better copy in the original sewn wrappers. Moderately foxed, with some older dust-soiling, curling to the edges of the page block (which extends beyond the wrappers by 1/2 inch or so). Contermporary ownership signature of James Dremin [?] on the front wrap. The editor, Samuel Findley, was a Presbyterian minister of the Associate Reformed Church (an offshoot of the Presbyterian Church, via the Synod of the South). The rear wrap lists agents for the journal in various locations, many of which are in the American south, which comports with the history of this Presbyterian denomination, which was formed in South Carolina near the end of the 18th century. An exceedingly scarce volume of Ohioana, as we found no library holdings for this or any other issues of "The Religious Examiner," though old auction records mention scant holdings in Ohio institutions, which may be long deaccessioned. A local history volume ("Stories of Guernsey County," by William Wolfe Page) contains a rather lengthy biography of Findley, with its own subsection which discusses this periodical. The author writes that it was "one of the first religious journals to be published west of the Allegheny Mountains;" a rather bold, but not impossible claim. Not in Howes. Good +. VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of this important medical thesis by the French physician Poiseuille (1797-1869). "Poiseuille was the first after Stephen Hales to make any important addition to the knowledge of the physiology of circulation. In his graduation thesis, above, he described a 'hemodynamometer' invented by himself and which he used to repeat some of Hales's blood-pressure experiments. With his hemomanometer, a mercury manometer, which was a great improvement on the long tube used by Hales, Poiseuille showed that the blood-pressure rises and falls on expiration and inspiration, and measured the degree of arterial dilatation produced by each heart beat." (Garrison-Morton). Hales's work marked the greatest advance in the physiology of the circulation between Harvey and the introduction of the mercury manometer and other instruments for the measurement of blood pressure by J.L.M. Poiseuille in 1828' (PMM). Other theses included in this Sammelband are: … [Click Below for Full Description]

Neal, John
Portland: Shirley and Hyde, 1828. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 1st editionj. A Good copy. 8vo., xx, 21-276 pp. Bound in rown cloth backed tan paper over boards, with title on a paper label on the spine. The spine is well rubbed, with a loss at the crown and foot; joints rubbed thru. Light scattered browning on some signatures. A Good copy of this scarce historical novel.*** John Neal (1793 -1876), born in Portland Maine (then part of Massachusetts) was an author and literary critic. He is credited as being the first American author to employ colloquialism in his writing, breaking with more formal traditions in literature. He was an early women's rights advocate, prohibitionist, temperance advocate, opponent of dueling, accomplished lawyer, boxer, and architect. In RACHEL DYER, Neal describes the Salem Witch trials of the 1690's; using the incidents that occur, the extraordinary phenomena, the 'unnatural' things, witchcraft, violence and death, to form the landscape. He emphasizes that Salem is inhabited by wise and learned people. But the wilderness now overtakes the civilized and pervades the small social microcosm that is Salem, affecting the minds of the learned as well as those of the ignorant. The contagion is apparent in the behavior of the city Fathers, the savages and the Quakers alike. ***.

London: George B. Whittaker, 1828. [Supernatural occurence / mysticism] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (19 x 12cm), ppxi; 323. Early two-tone cloth, manuscript label to spine. Contents clean, occasional fold to corners, vintage catalogue description affixed to pastedown, minor rubbing and soiling to covers. A very good copy. Relating to Samuel Hibbert-Ware (1782-1848), antiquary and geologist, whose paper 'Spectral Illusions' was read before the Royal Society of Edinburgh, later expanded in book-form as 'Sketches of the Philosophy of Apparitions' (1824), a popular book of spiritualism which ran to a second edition in 1925. This attention provoked an anonymous reply (the present volume) in 1828, which aimed to 'counteract any sentiments approaching materialism' aroused by Hibbert's essay. With an Appendix 'Singular Narration extracted from a Recent Publication entitled "Foreign Scenes and Travelling Recreations" by John Howison, Esquire, of the Honourable East India Company's Service.' John Howison (1797-1859) was a maritime trader and surgeon, author of 'Tales of the Colonies' (1830) being a collection of gothic tales set in the West Indies. He became a member of the Bombay branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, serving as Vice-President in 1832. The present publisher George B Whittaker, together with Oliver & Boyd, issued Howison's highly successful 'Sketches of Upper Canada' (1821); there is a distinct possibility that Howison is the uncredited author of the current work.

Coleridge S. (Samuel) T. (Taylor)
London: William Pickering, 1828. Complete set in 3 volumes. One of 12 copies of the first large paper edition; however, the fly leaf of Volume 1, with Pickering's signed limitation statement, has been neatly removed. 1828. Hardcovers, 8vo., all three in original red cloth with title labels. x, 353, iv, 370, iv 428 pp. Very Good+ set. Bright, clean and unmarked contents. Some loss and rubbing to the title labels, but most of the text is still present. Spines sunned; a few small areas of discoloration to the spines and boards. Coleridge was apparently displeased with this first edition and rushed to get the second edition published. Lacks signed page, but still a scarce set. As WISE, iii, 1 notes, Dykes Campbell said of this edition, 'This must be a rare book... How much Coleridge was dissatisfied with the edition of 1828 is witnessed by the many alterations he made in preparing that of 1829.' Digital images available upon request. Very Good+ / No Jacket. [Attributes: First Edition]
