Cooper, James Fenimore
Carey, Lea and Carey, Philadelphia, 1828. The original full leather binding has some minor wear and rubbing, but is solid; a stain at the bottom edge affects the first few pages of Volume One; both volumes have Rutland Farmer's Library labels on the inside of the front board; a few signatures in Volume One have sprung, but there is surprisingly little foxing typical of American books of this era; a respected bookseller's note says this edition preceded the English, but a copy currently on their website claims the opposite. What can be said with certainly is this is a very nice copy of the First American Edition in a very nice contemporary binding, and is scarce such. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Birmingham: Printed by B. Hudson, 1828. 24pp. Half title. Original printed self-wrappers, stitched as issued. Some wear and tanning to half title and p.24, paper fault in upper right corner of titlepage (no text affected). Very good. Second edition, following the first of 1825, giving accounts of the "wanton, cold-blooded" hunting of runaway slaves in Jamaica. The "shooting excursion" in the title refers to the 1824 "attack made by a party of islanders upon a long-established camp of runaway slaves who had lived peaceably for years in a forest settlement" (Ragatz). The pamphlet includes summaries of the attack from the "Montego Bay Gazette," "Cornwall Courier," and "Cornwall Gazette" as well as an illustration of the camp with the route of the attackers. The author explains that "the barbarous excursions which have been described, did not owe their origin to any insurrection of the Negroes, in consequence of any discussions in the British Parliament, nor, in consequence of any stir made by the British people in their behalf. They were, as the account itself testifies, wanton, cold-blooded excursions, on the part of the white inhabitants of Trelawny, to root up a runaway settlement, which had subsisted eleven years, without offense or molestation to the neighbourhood" (p.6). WÖHLER, Friedrich
Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1828. First edition. First edition, complete journal volume, of this foundation work of organic chemistry. "In 1828, Wöhler succeeded in effecting an artificial synthesis of urea by heating ammonium cyanate. This was the first time that an organic substance had ever been built up artificially from the constituents of an inorganic substance without any intervention of vital processes, and it soon became clear that there is no essential difference between the structural chemistry of life and that of inanimate nature" (GM). "This was the first synthesis of an organic compound, and this accomplishment is generally regarded as the beginning of organic chemistry" (Sparrow, p. 37). "The discovery destroyed the vitalistic theory which held that organic compounds could be produced only by living organisms, and led eventually to the brilliant results that have been achieved in attempts to synthesize other organic compounds" (Dibner). "In 1828, Friedrich Wöhler (1800-1882) published a short article in which he described the unexpected formation of urea from ammonium cyanate. The appearance of urea as a product was entirely unexpected, because theory predicted that cyanic acid and ammonia should produce a compound with the properties of a salt. Urea was not a salt, and it did not possess any of the properties expected for cyanates. In the article, Wöhler repeatedly noted the novelty of the artificial synthesis, but he and his mentor, the well-known Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius (1779-1848), were most intrigued by the formation of a nonsalt from a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pascal, Blaise
Published by J. Leavitt, Boston: Crocker & Brewster [Vanderpool and Cole, Printers], New York, 1828. First American edition and the first work by Pascal published in America. This translation first published in London in 1816. xii, [13]-319 pp. 1 vols. 12mo. Attacking the Jesuits. Reponding to attacks of the Jesuits on the Jansenists and especially on Antoine Arnauld, Pascal wrote this very effective defence and counter-attack on the code of ethics of the Jesuits. It was very popular and placed on the "Index" in 1660. Anti-Catholic sentiment in America was strengthened in the 1820's encouraged by the dis-information disseminated by the British anti-Catholics fighting the Catholic Emancipation Act (1829) and the repeal of the Test Act (1828) and aggravated by the increase of Catholic immigrants. The "Nativist" groups, who throughout American history had directed much of their antagonism towards the Roman Catholics established groups like the American "Know-Nothing" Party and the "No-Popery" movement. S & S 34652 Original purple cloth-backed boards, printed paper label with title and publisher's name, uncut. 1828. A Former Tennessee Congressman Thanks an Editor for Opposing Southern Nullifiers, and Criticizes Andrew Jackson's Political Vindictiveness Former Tennessee congressman James Reynolds thanks newspaper editor Hezekiah Niles for standing against Southern nullifiers while offering insight into the spiteful tactics Jackson used against Reynolds once elected to the presidency. Jackson won the presidency in 1828 after losing in 1824 to John Quincy Adams. Apparently, fellow Tennessean Reynolds did not complain enough about the "corrupt bargain" election of 1824--and Andrew Jackson held a grudge. JAMES B. REYNOLDS. Autograph Letter Signed, to Hezekiah Niles. Clarksville, Tenn., January 12, 1831. 3 pp., 9¾ x 8 in., with integral address leaf. Inventory #22535 Partial Transcript: "...I read, however, the Register with the greatest attention and pleasure. I had flatter'd myself for some years past, that I might once more have the happiness to meet with you at Washington. But unfortunately my state has chang'd her politicks, and is nearly, if not quite hand in glove, with the great nullifying state in the South, while I remain steadfast in my old notions, about internal improvements, tariffs, banks, &c. ... When I left Congress in 1825, my state was then in favor of internal improvements and in judicious tariff, but see how it has chang'd in Congress since Genl. Jackson's elevation?... You, my dear sir, have my sincere thanks...for always being the firm and bold sentinel of the American people, in sounding the alarm, and guarding their liberty and constitutions of the union. BELIMA (Lamenie).
45084 BELIMA (Lamenie). Poésies. 1828 BELIMA (Lamenie). Poésies. s.l., 1828. MANUSCRIT in-4. 16ff.

A well-read copy of the first edition of this manual of ancient and modern geography, originally prepared for the use of Eton schoolboys. The author, Aron Arrowsmith, son of the major namesake cartographer and printer, achieved some notoriety thanks to this atlas and another on biblical geography. In the present one, each double-page plate features on the left the modern outline of continents and states, and on the right their ancient geography. Europe is divided into Central, Western, Northern and Southern, whereas non-European maps highlight the British possessions, territories under British influence by tribute, p … [Click Below for Full Description]
