Combe, William - wrongly attributed to. Thomas Illman, illustrator
London: Jaques & Wright. First edition, 1828, very good, in full calf gilt by Zaehnsdorf, colored frontispiece and colored illustrated title page as well as letter press title page, and an additional 13 hand colored plates, 269 pp, light rubbing to edges and joints, but very good indeed. Sometimes attributed to Combe but really a satire of his Dr. Syntax. Thomas Illman, the illustrator, was an engraver and illustrator active in London in the 1820s who moved to New York in 1829 and died in Philadelphia. There was also an edition of this published in 1828 by the publisher Blake, unclear on priority. Very Good.

[ANONYMOUS].
London: George B. Whittaker, 1828. [Supernatural occurence / mysticism] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (19 x 12cm), ppxi; 323. Early two-tone cloth, manuscript label to spine. Contents clean, occasional fold to corners, vintage catalogue description affixed to pastedown, minor rubbing and soiling to covers. A very good copy. Relating to Samuel Hibbert-Ware (1782-1848), antiquary and geologist, whose paper 'Spectral Illusions' was read before the Royal Society of Edinburgh, later expanded in book-form as 'Sketches of the Philosophy of Apparitions' (1824), a popular book of spiritualism which ran to a second edition in 1925. This attention provoked an anonymous reply (the present volume) in 1828, which aimed to 'counteract any sentiments approaching materialism' aroused by Hibbert's essay. With an Appendix 'Singular Narration extracted from a Recent Publication entitled "Foreign Scenes and Travelling Recreations" by John Howison, Esquire, of the Honourable East India Company's Service.' John Howison (1797-1859) was a maritime trader and surgeon, author of 'Tales of the Colonies' (1830) being a collection of gothic tales set in the West Indies. He became a member of the Bombay branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, serving as Vice-President in 1832. The present publisher George B Whittaker, together with Oliver & Boyd, issued Howison's highly successful 'Sketches of Upper Canada' (1821); there is a distinct possibility that Howison is the uncredited author of the current work.

Coleridge S. (Samuel) T. (Taylor)
London: William Pickering, 1828. Complete set in 3 volumes. One of 12 copies of the first large paper edition; however, the fly leaf of Volume 1, with Pickering's signed limitation statement, has been neatly removed. 1828. Hardcovers, 8vo., all three in original red cloth with title labels. x, 353, iv, 370, iv 428 pp. Very Good+ set. Bright, clean and unmarked contents. Some loss and rubbing to the title labels, but most of the text is still present. Spines sunned; a few small areas of discoloration to the spines and boards. Coleridge was apparently displeased with this first edition and rushed to get the second edition published. Lacks signed page, but still a scarce set. As WISE, iii, 1 notes, Dykes Campbell said of this edition, 'This must be a rare book... How much Coleridge was dissatisfied with the edition of 1828 is witnessed by the many alterations he made in preparing that of 1829.' Digital images available upon request. Very Good+ / No Jacket. Bamberger, Fritz (1814 Würzburg ? Neuenhain b. Bad Soden / Taunus)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Very Good.

United States - Great Britain Treaty]
London, 1828. [2],3pp. Folio. Modern half morocco and marbled boards. A couple small contemporary ink notes, else near fine. The official British printing. The fifth article of the Treaty of Ghent (1814) resolved to find a resolution to the dispute over the U.S.-Canadian boundary in the northeast, which had been at issue since the peace treaty of 1783. By the present Convention, Great Britain and the United States agree to submit to arbitration to resolve the boundary dispute, putting forth new reports and statements of their respective arguments, and agreeing to accept the decision of the arbitrator as "final and conclusive." In 1831 the King of the Netherlands, acting as arbitrator, submitted an award which was not accepted by either government, and the northeast boundary issue was not resolved until the "Webster-Ashburton" treaty of 1842. No copies of this British printing of the Convention are located on OCLC. Rare. MALLOY, p.646.

Ackermann, 1828. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. A Very Good + or better copy of this diminutive and famous Annual in a Very Good + or better example of the original and complete slipcase / box, both of which are in surprisingly nice condition compared to other copies that we have seen. All edges of the closed page block are in gilt. The book shows some general edge wear, particularly where the boards join the spine, some slight splitting at the joints, and some other general signs of use. The leading corners of each board show tiny rubs but remain remarkably sharp. The hinges are cracked and feel to have been reglued -- giving the book a solid feel. The pages and plates are surprisingly bright, and there is a small stamp of the F. F. Donaueschingen library. The word "FORGET" on both the box and on the volume's front board has been underlined and the book's title and date have been written in ink on the spine of the box. The box also shows some slight splitting and is foxed and somewhat soiled on the inside. The Forget Me Not books are notoriously fragile and prone to wear and loss. Provis, William Alexander
Printed for the author by Ibotson and Palmer, London, 1828, 1st and only edition. Half leather binding with paper covered boards. Seven raised bands to spine. Gilt lettering on red leather patch to compartment two. Elephant folio, 27ins x 20ins (69cm x 51cm), [viii], 105pp text followed by 17 plates. Of the text pages, 1 to 76 refers to the Menai bridge, 77 to 82 to Conway, 83 to 105 comprise 10 appendices and includes one additional plate. This additional plate is an engraving of a resolution sent to Lord Liverpool requesting the passing of a law to allow the building of the Menai Bridge and it contains 59 facsimile signatures. Of the 17 numbered plates, the first is a map, 2,3,4 & 5 are double page fold outs, ie 4 pages per plate in total, 15, 16 & 17 are engravings of views of the bridge (looking towards Beaumauris, Caernarvon and the Castle respectively). The engravings were done by R.G. Reeve from drawings by G. Arnold. The map has some browning, plate 4 is quite heavily foxed to the top and plate 16 shows some foxing. The binding has been restored / rebound at some point in the past (binders label at bottom of rear pastedown). Whilst the leather spine and corners look appropriate the boards are modern. There is wear to the corners suggesting that any rebind was done a while ago. The red leather label is probably original and is scuffed to one edge. Unfortunately, (in my opinion), the restorer has used inappropriately bright white paper for the new pastedowns. That said this is a complete well preserved copy of a scarce work.Nb William Alexander Provis (1792-1870) was … [Click Below for Full Description]

London, 1835. 8vo; 2 vols.; wrappers. Bitter and festering dispute between a Merchant and shipper. Shipper Charles Delegal was hired by Peter Milberg in 1816 to carry some goods from Hamburg to Buenos Ayres. Obviously, Milberg was not pleased by his performance, though it took him long enough to say so in 1828, when he published the first pamphlet ("Correspondence relating to an adventure made in the year 1816, from Hamburg to Buenos Ayres,.). Milberg accused Delegal of all sorts of inappropriate activities, including embezzlement, abusive language, and spreading false information. Delegal was none too prompt to respond, but in 1835, now almost 20 years after the incident, he published "Reply to a malignant and libelous pamphlet, clandestinely circulated by Mr. Peter August Milberg" Delegal set about to refute Milberg s claims in his reply. Both of these pamphlets are very rare, as they were likely printed in very small runs. "Rarísima disputa comercial por un viaje entre Hamburgo y Buenos Aires en 1816". Harrisburg, PA: Gustavus S. Peters. Condition: Very Good. The uncommon 1828 1st edition of this pocket guide to addressing one's basic legal needs without incurring the expense of hiring an attorney (a timeless desire, no doubt as pressing today as in the early 19th century). A solid, well-preserved copy to boot of the fragile 64mo. Tight and VG in its dark-brown marbled boards, with a calf-backed spine. Pronounced foxing at the pastedowns and endsheets and, less so, to the preliminaries. Beyond this, though, no writing or markings of any kind. Strong binding and hinges, the text completely unrubbed and eminently readable. Scarce as such, in its original appreance. A nice example of early legal history -- and a nice piece of Americana.
