Original botanical print from volume 3 plate number 15. The title is: 'Rosier de l'Ile de Bourbon' / 'Rosa Canina Burboniana' (Bourbon Rose). Handcoloured stipple engraving on a vellin type paper. Description: This plate originates from the third (second octavo) edition of Les Roses by Redoute and Thory. This edition was published 1828-1829, an edition of great popularity. This edition is the first to contain the wreath (frontispiece) and portraits, as well as 23 additional plates. The plates for this edition are reduced from the original folio plates, but lost none of the artistry of the originals - these are truly detailed masterpieces in miniature. The plates were engraved by Chardin, Langlois, Lemaire and others and coloured by hand after the originals by Redoute. Besides the plates listed, we carry some more. Please inquire if you're interested in a certain rose. Very scarse and desirable.Artists and Engravers: Pierre-Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) is seen as the most succesful flower painter of all time. Claude-Antoine Thory (1759-1827) was an ardent botanist amd collector of roses. Condition: Very good, given age. Remains from binding in the left margin as issued. General age-related toning and/or occasional light stains from handling or foxing. Rear blank. Please study scan carefully. Storage location: C260-40 The overall size is ca. 6.3 x 9.3 inch. The image size is ca. 5.5 x 7.9 inch. The overall size is ca. 16 x 23.5 cm. The image size is ca. 14 x 20 cm.

Rev J A Cramer
Oxford, 1828. Leather. Very Good/None. 2212 8mo. Three volumes, full calf prize binding, crest of Manchester Grammar School in gilt on front of each volume. Inscription to John Harris Backhouse, summer examination 1843, signed by Nicolas Germon (High Master of the school, 1842-1859). With a map of Athens and environs but WITHOUT the general map of Greece. The map appears to have been omitted from the binding rather than having been removed later. This book tries to tie together evidence from literature with that from geographical surveys to identify the position of ancient cities and other geographical features mentioned by Greek writers. Condition Notes: Beautiful, clean type, crisp and clear. All bindings sound but a little rubbed and worn, especially Volume III. Some foxing to early pages, especially to title pages. Photographs on reqest.

[Click Below for Full Description]

PONCELET (Jean Victor)
[Click Below for Full Description]

IRVING, Washington
London: John Murray, 1828. 8vo, pp. 473, 490, 413, 489. Bound with two large folding maps, bound into the rear of volume IV. All four volumes bound with the half titles in full calf, stamped in gilt on the spine, by Bickers & Son of London. Some rubbed and nicked. A very nice clean set. BAL lists 8 pages of textual variants and notes: "Due to the fact that two different printers were involved, using several settings of type, The above factors combine to produce copies of the book in an almost infinite variety. No ready argument remerges to support primacy of any setting, if primacy there is...BAL suggests that all copies issued by Murray under date 1828 be considered of equal primacy until evidence is produced to the contrary."
