Lenz, Jakob Michael Reinhold.
Berlin, G. Reimer, 1828. - Erste Gesamtausgabe. [Click Below for Full Description]

(Santiago de Chile), Imprenta de R. Rengifo, dated 16 March 1828.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Folio (29 x 18.5 cm.), disbound. Caption title. Small woodcut of roses at end. Light browning. Good to very good condition. Early manuscript foliation in ink. (1 l.) *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Valdivieso, a judge who had been maligned in print by José Agustin de la Rosa y Herrera, here explains that Rosa y Herrera came to his court after a priest accused him of insulting him and blaspheming. Valdivieso then discovered that the accused had run off with an innocent young woman and had been living with her in poverty in Santiago. He sent the young woman to a decent home, assigned 15 days of community service to Rosa y Herrera, and released him on his own recognizance to return to his family. The next Valdivieso heard of him was when Rosa y Herrera published a scurrilous attack on him. Valdivieso (d. 1839), a lawyer, was named a judge in criminal court in 1828. Two years later he was named to the Corte Suprema. In 1826-1827 he had served as deputy in the Congreso Naional Constituyente, and from 1831-1833 he was deputy in the Asamblea Provincial de Santiago. *** Briseño III, 22 , no. 124. Tieck, Ludwig.
Dresden, Arnold, 1823 (1 u. 2) Berlin, G. Reimer o. Thomas Cogswell Upham
Shirley and Hyde, Portland, 1828. 576 pages to this rather scarce Regency Period philosophical work of Scottish Common Sense Realism, by a New Hampshire minister and Bowdoin College professor important in the academic history of the US for his notions of free will as well as its limits in abnormal psychology. Moderate wear/rubbing to boards and spine with a few small scuffs, and a round light tea stain at spine base, inscribed ffep CW Lapham, interior with a few small spots, mild foxing. MORGAN, William (1774-c.1826)
Rochester: Printed for the Author, William Morgan, 1828. 2 volumes, 8vo. 96pp; 72pp. [Illustrations:] Full dark blue crushed morocco, bound by Bradstreets; [Narrative:] Half dark blue curshed morocco and marbled paper covered boards, bound by Bensel. Provenance: H. F. DePuy (booklabels in both works); John Camp Williams (booklabel in Illustrations) Rare first Rochester edition of William Morgan's famous anti-Masonic pamphlet and a Rochester edition of the account of his abduction and presumed murder: both volumes from the famed library of H. F. DePuy. After being denied participation at a lodge in Batavia, William Morgan vowed to publish an exposé revealing the secrets of Masonry. Before publication, Morgan was arrested on a trumped up charge relating to a debt. Local printer David C. Miller, who was one of the financial backers of the proposed publication and whose shop was burned as a result, bailed Morgan out of jail and travelled with him to Fort Niagara. That was the last Morgan was seen alive and was presumed to have been kidnapped and murdered by a group of Masons from Batavia, several of whom would be convicted of kidnapping (but in the absence of the body, not murder). Miller would publish Morgan's work shortly after his disappearance. Titled Illustrations of Masonry , the work was first published in Batavia in 1826 with subsequent editions published in Rochester and New York (the New York 1826 [but 1827?] edition mistakenly cited as the first edition by some). The first edition, announced for publication in August 1826, was hastily and crudely printed at Mi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sir Thomas Phillipps, 1st Baronet (2 July 1792 – 6 February 1872) was an English antiquary and book collector who amassed the largest private collection of manuscript material ever, and gave birth to the term "vello-mania", as he sought to own a copy of every book that had been published, with emphasis on vellum bindings and antique manuscripts. Istituto Geografico Militare dello Stato Maggiore Austriaco
WEBB[E], Cornelius.
London: William Sams, 1828 - Octavo (179 × 110 mm). Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, red morocco label, rebacked with the original spine laid down. Somewhat rubbed, through at the corners, hinges a little clumsily repaired, light toning, some off-setting from the plates, remains overall very good. Frontispiece engraved by William Heath after his own drawing and 5 other similar plates. First edition. A highly prolific, and modestly successful,l poet and essayist, Webb's, (1789–1858), "place in literary history is due chiefly to an unfortunate association with Keats. A quotation from a poem by Webb, now lost, referring to 'Keats, / The Muses's son of promise' and placing Keats, with Hunt, alongside 'Chaucer, Spenser, Shakspeare, Milton', headed the first of John Gibson Lockhart's savage articles entitled 'The cockney school of poetry' in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine. In a letter to Benjamin Bailey Keats alludes with some bitterness to the 'Motto from one Cornelius Webb Poetaster', whose effusion provided so convenient a starting point for Lockhart's ridicule. Thenceforward, 'Corny' Webb was frequently linked with 'Johnny' Keats as belonging to a new urban breed of writers, marked by the absurdity of their pretensions, the vulgarity of their productions, and the effeminacy of their style" (ODNB). A few neat pencilled notes making comparisons to versions published earlier in the New Monthly Magazine, and making reference to Keats, Leigh Hunt, and Wainewright. Webb died impoverished in the Charterhouse in 1858. Armorial bookplate of Mary Stephenson to the front pas … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chateaubriand, Viscount De
London, 1828. 8vo, fine modern polished calf over marbled paper, 356 + 429 pp. A beautiful set, finely bound in a modern binding. Text block excellent, with small private library ownership signatures to heads of title pages else fine. Original spine labels preserved. An important primary source on early America. "Chateaubriand's reputation both as statesman and as a man of letters had, much like that of Edgar Allan Poe in America, suffered in less romantic eras. Nevertheless, for nearly three decades he was not only a powerful and popular figure in the French government, but a man of honor who spoke unhesitantly for what he considered the worthy cause. And during those same three decades he was the most admired literary figure in France, giving way only slowly in that respect to Victor Hugo, who as an adolescent publishing his first volume of poems hoped 'to be Chateaubriand or nothing. '"-ANB. Howes C-325. Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
