[París, France: Paulot & Carré, 1828. Wallpaper broadside (45 x 51 cm.), with seven-color woodcut (black, orange, green, blue, white, gray, and brown). Printed on a brown paper coated with a pale blue pigment. The text states, "Bonne double bierre", and the scene depicts four soldiers in uniform being waited on by a woman. She pours a seated soldier a drink while another stands with his hand draped around her shoulder. Two more soldiers share a smoke, appearing to have had a few drinks already. Only the woman is clearly not enjoying herself. There are no identifying marks or labels on the broadside or on the matte, but the stated publisher and date, and the attribution to the printers Paulot & Carré, are inferred by comparison with a print of the same series in the collection of the Museé du Papier Peint, in Rexheim, France. That print, with the same text, background color, print colors and rough size, depicts two women and a child, seated under an arbor with a military officer, enjoying a drink. Two exhibitions at Rixheim included that print; three similar prints were included in the groundbreaking exhibition by wallpaper collector and manufacturer Félix Follot, Papiers peints, à l'exposition universelle internationales de 1900 à Paris. Three similar prints were shown at the Exposition (notice 156 "Deux affiches illustrées imprimées chez Paulot et Carré (1828-1830) (Bière, Cidre)" and notice 158 "Affiche illustrée 'Bonne double bierre'" (1828). The two scenes described here were issued int … [Click Below for Full Description]

Three double-page & ten full-page woodcut illus., and several woodcuts in the text. 1 p.l., 28 folding leaves, 3 folding leaves of pharmaceutical ads, one page of colophon. 8vo, orig. blue patterned wrappers bound in later wrappers, orig. block-printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. Osaka: Kawachiya chobei et al., [Preface dated 1828; colophon dated 1830].First edition of the earliest detailed Japanese description of the cultivation, harvesting, and processing of the kuzu (or kudzu) plant.Kuzu has many uses: its powder is the essential ingredient used throughout Asia for thickening sauces and making various types of desserts. It is also used in numerous traditional medicines (including the Japanese kakkonto) and in textile and paper manufacturing. Kuzu is easily grown in poor soil and can be consumed by humans and animals in times of famine.Okura (1768-1856?), was one of the three most eminent agriculturalists of the Edo period. A reformer, he wrote more than twenty books on all aspects of agricultural improvement and technology; they were among the best of their period for range and clarity of explaining the new methods. Okura wrote this work to increase the revenue of farmers by instructing them how to grow and process the kuzu crop. He thoroughly describes the plant, its cultivation, and its numerous uses. The fine illustrations (and see below for the illustrator) depict the plant, workers cultivating the plant in the fields, tools, the manufacture of the powder and starch, preparing the kuzu fiber to make clothing, etc. Kuzu powder from Yoshino, a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Combe, William; Rowlandson, Thomas [illustrator]
London: R. A. Ackermann, 1828. Book. 12mos., 3 volumes; VG; bound in uniform 3/4 red leather, marbled boards, gilt tooling and lettering to spine; marbled text block; housed in a VG custom chemise and slipcase; mild rubbing and wear; Includes 81 color illustrations; RL consignment; shelved case 13. Together with the accompanying aquatints by Thomas Rowlandson that inspired the poem, it satirises the aesthetic ideals lying behind the picturesque and its frequently pompous followers. The poem tells how Dr Syntax, a curate, sets off in search of the ideal picturesque landscape only to be continually thwarted by bathetic and farcical inconveniences. During the course of the poem the unfortunate Dr Syntax stumbles into a lake while attempting to reach the perfect location from which to sketch a suitably ruined castle, is chased by a bull and driven to distraction by the incessant bleating of sheep. In 1827, he returned to take the reins of Peru, and during his government a war with Colombia would begin. Bolívar declared war on Peru on 3 July 1828. Samuel FINDLEY
Washington, Ohio?: Self-published?, 1828. Condition: Good +. Octavo, pp. 293-340 [48pp.]. A good or better copy in the original sewn wrappers. Moderately foxed, with some older dust-soiling, curling to the edges of the page block (which extends beyond the wrappers by 1/2 inch or so). Contermporary ownership signature of James Dremin [?] on the front wrap. The editor, Samuel Findley, was a Presbyterian minister of the Associate Reformed Church (an offshoot of the Presbyterian Church, via the Synod of the South). The rear wrap lists agents for the journal in various locations, many of which are in the American south, which comports with the history of this Presbyterian denomination, which was formed in South Carolina near the end of the 18th century. An exceedingly scarce volume of Ohioana, as we found no library holdings for this or any other issues of "The Religious Examiner," though old auction records mention scant holdings in Ohio institutions, which may be long deaccessioned. A local history volume ("Stories of Guernsey County," by William Wolfe Page) contains a rather lengthy biography of Findley, with its own subsection which discusses this periodical. The author writes that it was "one of the first religious journals to be published west of the Allegheny Mountains;" a rather bold, but not impossible claim. Not in Howes. [Attributes: First Edition]

London: R. Ackermann , 1828. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Very good +. A Very Good + or better copy of this diminutive and famous Annual in a Very Good + or better example of the original and complete slipcase / box, both of which are in surprisingly nice condition compared to other copies that we have seen. All edges of the closed page block are in gilt. The book shows some general edge wear, particularly where the boards join the spine, some slight splitting at the joints, and some other general signs of use. The leading corners of each board show tiny rubs but remain remarkably sharp. The hinges are cracked and feel to have been reglued -- giving the book a solid feel. The pages and plates are surprisingly bright, and there is a small stamp of the F. F. Donaueschingen library. The word "FORGET" on both the box and on the volume's front board has been underlined and the book's title and date have been written in ink on the spine of the box. The box also shows some slight splitting and is foxed and somewhat soiled on the inside. The Forget Me Not books are notoriously fragile and prone to wear and loss. Often, the bottom of the box is missing, and in some cases the box has been lost or discarded upon the rebinding of the book in sturdier material or otherwise. Rudolph Ackermann published the first "Forget Me Not (Forget-Me-Not) in 1822, employing Frederic Shoberl as its editor, making it the first literary annual to be published in England. His series proved quite popular, and by 1828 fifteen different "literary annuals" were published in the UK. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Blouet, G Abel
1828. 19 pp. introduction to a presentation of 15 exquisite engraved plates (7 fold-out, 2 double side, 1 color) showing the results of the early 19th century excavations by Velo and reconstructions of various buildings within the complex, including sculptural and mosaic fragments and a general plan of the site. Some minor soiling and creasing, some waterstaining to upper corners of several of the text pages. Large folio. Boards, some repairs to spine, minor soiling and abrasions. Paris (Firmin Didot) 1828. The Baths of Caracalla were inaugurated in AD 216 and were in operation until the 530s. In the 5th century they were referred to as one of the seven wonders of Rome, with a daily usage estimated at 6,000 to 8,000 bathers. They eventually fell into a state of ruin from lack of use, and suffered major damage in a significant earthquake in 847. Over the subsequent centuries, the baths were used as a quarry for construction materials, as gardens, and even as a playground. In the 17th and 18th centuries, however, interest in the structure was rekindled, and in 1824, excavations at the baths were overseen by Count Egidio de Velo, followed by restoration work later in the century. Findings included the mosaics of athletes now housed at the Vatican Museums.

Paganini, Niccolò, violin virtuoso (1782-1840).
Wien, 1. VII, 1828. 1? SS. mit eh. Adresse verso (Faltbrief). Gr.-4to. [Click Below for Full Description]

Bolivar, Simón
Bogot, 1828. [1]p. plus integral blank. [with:] SIMON BOLIVAR LIBERTADOR PRESIDENTE DE LA REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA...DECRETO ORGNICO...[caption title]. [4]pp. Folio. Old creases. Minor soiling. Very good plus. In a half morocco and cloth box, leather labels. An extremely rare broadside printing of Bolivar's declaration of dictatorial powers, addressed to the people of Gran Colombia, together with the DECRETO ORGNICO issued by him, outlining the organization of his new government. The two documents - bearing the same watermark, folds, and publication date - appear to have been issued together to the Treasury; a contemporary hand has written "Tesoreria" on the first leaf, and the wear patterns suggest that they have been kept together for some time. Simon Bolivar was already president and founding hero of Gran Colombia (present-day Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and parts of Peru). In February 1827, with the nation floundering and on the point of fragmentation, Bolivar had proposed resigning his position as president, claiming he had no desire for dictatorial control. The Congress rejected his resignation. After a failed constitutional convention in the summer of 1828, Bolivar declared himself, by this decree, dictator for life, in what was intended as a temporary measure to maintain unification. In the first document, Bolivar addresses the "Colombianos," explaining his reasoning for the extraordinary measures granting him absolute power over the government. He also assures his countrymen that he will not remain a dictator any longer than necessary, but in the me … [Click Below for Full Description]
