Bogotá: No publisher/printer Folio (31.3 cm; 12.25"). [1] p.. 1828 The Liberator" condemns the actions — the "limitless perfidy" — of the government of Peru and announces the beginning of the first international war on South American soil. This pitted Peru against Gran Colombia and was an attempted land grab by Peru, wanting to wrench Bolivia from orbit of Gran Colombia. Greatly displeased with Peru's invasion of the nation named after him, in which he had been the first president, and which was guarded by forces from the Colombia of which he was presently president, Bolivar in this proclamation of 3 July mobilized his army. Coincidentally, and unknown to him, also on 3 July, Peru officially declared war on Gran Colombia. => Searches of NUC, WorldCat, CCILA, and COPAC fail to locate any copies. Tattered at the edges with tears and small pieces of paper missing; old repairs on the verso where a fold tear and another exist; small stains to upper margin, with light age-toning and a very little foxing. Housed in a quarter red morocco clamshell case. Very good.

Verviers, Chez M. -R. Beaufays, 1828. 8vo. Bound in two nice contemporary uniform half calf bindings with black leather title-label with gilt lettering and green leather tome-label. Ex-libris pasted on to pasted down front free end-paper and small stamp of previous owner (same as ex-libris) to verso of title-page. Front hindge on vol. 1 a bit. A very fine and clean set. (2), 254 pp. (4), 281, (1), 23 [supplement], (4) pp.. First edition of Courtois' important and early work on statistics, predating Quetelets groundbreaking work (Sur l'Homme..., 1842) by almost 15 years. In the present work, Courtois assembled date on various subjects such a climate, agriculture, geology and flora and fauna. There is no direct reference to pure statistical methods but this is a fine example on the usage of statistics in its early period. Courois quickly found himself in the center of the debate between Quetelets and Say's debate on the usefullness of statistical research, a debate which Courtois contributed to with the present work. Richard Courtois (1806-1835) received his doctorate in medicine in 1825 and at the same time, functioned as the deputy director of the Botanical Garden of the University of Liège

Manuscript on paper, in English. "Album.

[U.K. 8vo (18.9 cm, 7.45"). [143] ff.; illus.. 1828–33] This remarkably substantial collection opens with a neatly hand-inked Burns quotation: "O may the powers the giftie gie me, [/] To see mysel as others see me," followed by two mounted engravings giving the text of the Lord's Prayer and Psalm 100 in extremely "micro" form. From there the volume offers a wide variety of early 19th-century poems, quotations, plates, and original illustrations, preserved on both plain white and on pink, green, yellow, dark blue, and turquoise pages. The => original illustrations include pencil sketches of ships in a stormy sea and of stately country homes, a hand-colored moth (one of two) excised and affixed to a watercolored branch of flowers, a pretty spray of colorful blooms signed by Fanny Simpson of Doncaster, and an oil-painted scene of cows in a misty pastoral setting; among the images taken from printed sources are steel-engraved views of Cliffords Tower and Laythorp Postern, "Feramorz relating the story of the Peri," and a portrait of Sir Walter Scott. The many poems include "Forget-me-not," Thomas Campbell's lines on Hope, "Lines Written in the First Leaf of a Friend's Album" (slightly mistitled here, originally written by Bernard Barton), a meditation on the letter E, and an imitation of "Oh no! we never mention her" that closes with "I never can forget"; some entries, e.g., Jessy Steele's "On Leaving Home," seem to be original/occasional. Also present is => an original poem signed by John Roby, folklorist and author of Traditions of Lancashire, with the version as inscribed here in Roby's hand (titled "The hush'd Tempest" and dated Rochdale, 1828) differing slightly from "The Storm," the published form which appeared in The Investigator in 1820. There is one page offering a puzzle; another offers one verse in French; and a third presents us with => a particularly fine version of "The Map of Matrimony," beautifully rendered and with a verse from Cowper underneath. It is possible that more extended sleuthing than we can indulge in might locate this book within a particular family and circle. Fanny Simpson, signing one of her several charming artistic contributions at full length, gives us a Doncaster connection. An "M. Simpson" / "M.S." appears more than once; was the "Isabella" / "Isabella S" who signed her contribution from Byron intimately, with her given name only, a sister? There are Bayne, Newall, and Stockdale connections; at least TWO Steeles made entries, the Jessy above and also Thomas, who contributed a number of entries penned in calligraphic mode — one or two of these signed in full and many others signed "T.S." Was John Roby a family friend?? Half black sheep in imitation of morocco over marbled paper–covered sides, leather edges (including corners) with gilt roll, spine gilt extra; binding rubbed and scuffed overall, but still dignified. All edges gilt. Pages slightly age-toned, with occasional small spots; a few instances of offsetting from or uneven fading to colored paper. Some plates foxed. A rich and warmly evocative early 19th-century commonplace book, one emanating both Sense and Sensibility as well cultivated in Accomplishments.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Berlin, 3. II. 1828. - 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo. Mit eh. Adresse. "Zu seinen Werken zählen Trauerspiele (u. a.

Bogota: No publisher/printer] Folio (29.2 cm; 11.5"). [1] p.. 1828 In August of 1828 Bolivar was 45 years old, weary, and would be dead in two years. He had freed or helped free much of South America from Spain, served as president of Bolivia (12 August 1825 – 29 December 1825) and Peru (8 February 1824 – 28 January 1827), and was president of federation of Gran Colombia (17 December 1819 – 4 May 1830). He believed in democracy and republicanism and in that summer of 1828 was frustrated that the Constitutional Convention he had called expecting it to write a strong centralist document that would satisfy the demands of the emerging separatist and extremely regional sentiments of the Venezuelans and others had failed. Because of the Convention's collapse, via this document, dated 27 August, Bolivar declared himself dictator rather than president. In doing so he pledge to his people that he obligated himself "to strictly obey your legitimate wants: I will protect your sacred religion as the faith of all Colombians and the code of all good men; I will make justice the first law of all transactions and the universal guarantee of our citizens." The promise of liberty is strangely addressed: "I will not say anything to you about liberty because if I fulfill my promises you will be more than free — you will be respected." Searches of WorldCat, COPAC, CCILA, Catálogo Colectivo del Patrimonio Bibliográfico, the OPACs of the Bibliotecas Nacionales de Colombia and Venezuela locate one copy in the U.S. and possibly three in the BNC and probably none in the BNV. Removed from a bound volume and irregular along the left margin; without the integral blank. Eight wormholes in text but not costing any letters. Now housed in a quarter red morocco clamshell box, round spine, raised bands with gilt accenting. A good++ copy.

Return. for a Copy of the Record of Conviction of Joseph Sudds and Patrick Thompson, Privates of the 57th Regiment.

House of Commons, 14 July, London 1828 - Tall quarto, 10 pp. and docket title sheet; a fine copy, uncut and unfolded. Fascinating collection of published correspondence from Governor Darling to British Parliament concerning the dramatic punishment of troops dodging their service in the New South Wales 57th Regiment. Darling established his authoritarian reputation through disciplinary measures such as these 'in order that soldiers who wantonly sacrifice their character may not deceive themselves by a groundless hope of escaping punishment.'The first dispatch reveals seven recent cases of soldiers of the 57th maiming themselves or committing brazen crimes to escape the full term of their service (further transportation being preferable to time in the army). Darling made an example of two of the soldiers caught stealing cloth in broad daylight with no attempt at concealment, ordering that Joseph Sudds and Patrick Thompson 'be immediately stripped of their uniform in presence of the troops, and be dressed in felons clothing; that they be put in chains, and delivered in charge to the overseers of the "chain gangs," in order to their being removed to the interior, and worked on the mountain roads, being drummed, as rogues, out of the garrison.'Ordinarily this punishment and spectacular reversal of roles would not have warranted the concern of the Colonial Secretary. However, Joseph Sudds died shortly after starting work and Darling was attacked by the editor of the Australian for his callous treatment. Darling defends his actions in this correspondence, stressing that although chains are 'designated instruments of torture' those fitted to Sudds and Thompson weighed just over 13 pounds. Sudds was suffering from dropsy at the time of his arrest and his decease may have not have been the direct result of heavy labour.Unlike many of his contemporaries in the Colonial service, Darling is an engaging writer and his correspondence makes arresting reading while providing some insight into service conditions for the 57th Regiment.
