The Life of John Ledyard, the American Traveller; comprising selections from his Journals and Correspondence

Cambridge, Boston, New York, Philadelphia: Hilliard and Brown, et al., 1828. Octavo, with the half-title, a little browned as usual; a very good copy in contemporary speckled calf, neatly rebacked to match. "One of the great American biographies" First edition of this biography of John Ledyard, the American who sailed as sergeant of marines in the Resolution on Cook's third voyage: 'one of the great American biographies' (Forbes).Ledyard was the author of one of the scarcer - if less reliable - surreptitious accounts of Cook's voyage (published Hartford, 1783). In every sense, this biography is a necessary companion to the original work and a significant addition to the Cook canon as a substantial portion of the text relates to Cook's third voyage, with important original letters as well as critical comments on Ledyard's narrative found nowhere else.In his later life Ledyard travelled to Europe, Siberia and Africa, meeting with figures such as Sir Joseph Banks and Thomas Jefferson. Shortly after his death in Egypt in 1789, his cousin, Dr Isaac Ledyard began accumulating material for a biography. His project never materialised and some years later the material was handed to the American historian Jared Sparks, editor of the North American Review and later president of Harvard University. Sparks used his considerable skill to integrate the original manuscript materials into the present engaging and compelling narrative, including additional important original letters relating to Ledyard, Cook and other officers of the Resolution. Forbes notes the considerable historical significance of Ledyard's life and commends the work as 'one of the great American biographies' (Hawaiian National Bibliography, 708).

P. von), Durch Thatsachen beurkundete Biographie des Dr. Johann Baptist Schenkl. Von einer (sic) seiner Freunde hrsg. O. O., Dr. und J. (um 1826). Mit gestoch. Porträt, S. (3)-53 (so komplett). - Vgl. Hamberger-M. Sehr dekorativ.

Tetes et Groupe de Sauvages du Camden-Shire (Nouvelle Galles meridionale)

Bulla, Paris 1828 - Handcoloured lithograph, 385 x 290 mm.; a few light spots and a little gentle foxing, a very good copy overall. Aboriginal portraits and camp-fire scene. Engaging Australian Aboriginal portraits and camp scene from the official voyage account of Hyacinthe de Bougainville, who toured the South Pacific between 1824 and 1826.Edmond de la Touanne, whose work formed the basis of these fine lithographic portraits, was a friend and protégé of de Bougainville and sailed on his expedition as lieutenant de vaisseau. Because of the haste with which the expedition was manned, no official artist was sent; as Bougainville remarks, no pictorial record of the expedition would have survived but for de la Touanne's sketches, which were published as lithographs in the official record of the expedition and in de la Touanne's own album.

Tables in illustration of the theory of definite proportionals; shewing the prime equivalent numbers of the elementary substances and the volume and weights in which they combine.

John Murray 1828 Original cloth - backed boards, spine label; overall in superb condition. From the libraries of the Essex Institute, Francis Peabody Library, and Arnold Thackray, with both bookplates present. First edition and considered ?very scarce and not in the usual chemical bibliographies? (Neville). Noted as a significant book in the development of the theory of chemical combination, in which the combining weights of the known elements are presented in tabular form. It is also important because it gave an experimental basis to Dalton?s atomic theory and brought the use of equivalent weights into practice. Brande (1788 - 1866), apprenticed as an apothecary, studied medicine, but his main interest was chemistry. He succeeded Sir Humphry Davy to the chair of chemistry at the Royal Institution, and was director of their laboratory and mineralogical collection. At the Royal Institution, Brande devoted himself to chemical investigation, lectures, and writing, as well as editing the Quarterly Journal of Science and Art, where he was assisted by Michael Faraday. ?Never a major researcher in the sense of Davy or Faraday, he was an effective lecturer and writer of several important textbooks, all of which went through several additions? (ODNB, II, pp. 1124 - 1126).
