SOME ACCOUNT OF SOME OF THE BLOODY DEEDS OF GENERAL JACKSON / [followed by a row of six coffins, each 2 x 3/4 inches, each bearing the name of one of the six militia men executed for mutiny at Fort Jackson, on the Tallapoosa River in Alabama, in 1814, dense text printed in five columns, another row of coffins representing more atrocities committed by Jackson, a cut of General Jackson assaulting Samuel Jackson on the streets of Nashville, and a report from Thomas Hart Benton reporting on an altercation between the general and himself in Nashville]

NP: np, 1828. Printed broadside, 18 3/4 x 12 3/8 inches, employing bold type for the two-line head, the entire text enclosed within a wide bold rule and other sections of the broadside marked off with thinner bold rules. The broadside prints "A Brief Account of the Execution of the Six Militia Men," a 16-quatrian poem "Mournful Tragedy," a report on Jackson's massacre of 1000 Indians ?"at the bend of the Tallapousie river?" in 1814, two other reports of Jackson atrocities during the southern Indian wars, and Benton's long report on his disagreements with the general. There are at least 27 different versions of this broadside, according to notes for the William Cook papers housed at the Historic New Orleans Collection; this version appears to differ somewhat from all others for which we have found descriptions. Small printing flaws resulting in two small holes in the Jackson vignette, affecting his profile and jacket, creased and a bit rumpled from folding, but a very good example of a rare issue of this Jackson "coffin" broadside. Folded, pinholes in each corner, with tears, from contemporary mounting. (#6210) This broadside, and others similar to it, became part of the heated Presidential election campaign of 1828 between Jackson and John Quincy Adams. During the Creek war of 1814, six men were court martialed and executed for mutiny (i.e., thinking their enlistments up, they were ready to go home); Jackson reviewed the case, but declined to alter the sentences. The sympathy portrayed for the six militia men in this broadside was intended to cast an unflattering light on Jackson's character and decision-making abilities. An editor in Philadelphia, John Binns, published an account of the executions in the Democratic Press newspaper and the information was used to produce political broadsides and pamphlets during the campaign

Select portions of the Psalms of David

      R. Howe, Government Printer, Sydney 1828 - Duodecimo; a delightful copy, completely unsophisticated in its original Sydney binding of blind-tooled sheep, preserved in a quarter morocco book-form box. An exceptional survivor from the early days of Sydney publishing: the first Australian Church of England hymn-book. It was printed by Robert Howe, son of the first Australian printer George Howe, and this copy bears a gift inscription from Governor Darling to Elizabeth, wife of Henry Dumaresq.Robert Howe, who printed this, was born in 1795 and emigrated with his father George in 1800. Dissolute in his youth, he spent most of his formative years around the press, which in 1808 was still attached to Government House (Ferguson, The Howes and their Press, pp. 16-7). Robert was taken under the wing of the Reverend Ralph Mansfield, and became a Methodist of some standing. He took over as Government Printer after the death of his father George in 1821, and quickly set about improving the quality of Sydney printing as well as branching out into new publishing ventures: he started the first Australian magazine, and published grander works such as Tompson's Wild Notes from the Lyre of a Native Minstrel, still admired for its handsome design. His was a luckless career, with more than his fair share of the usual hurdles associated with a career in colonial printing: a long unresolved fight with the government over censorship, a stabbing by an aggrieved reader in 1822, a procession of libel suits through the decade, and a horse-whipping by William Redfern.Sir Ralph Darling was appointed as Governor of NSW in 1825, succeeding Sir Thomas Brisbane in the post. Darling's governorship coincided with the raising of the ecclesiastical status in the colony, which came about by the inclusion of the Archdeacon on the newly-formed Executive Council, and the establishment of the Church and School Corporation in 1826, of which Darling was president. Thus it is most appropriate that this hymn-book, which aimed to "remove some difficulties which have been experienced in the Church Psalmody in this part of the world" (preface) was presented by Governor Darling to Henry Dumaresq's wife, Elizabeth, and is inscribed "from Lt. Genl. Darling. - Govt. House - to Mrs. H. Dumaresq".Three of his wife's brothers had travelled with him to Australia, Edward, Henry and William Dumaresq. Edward travelled as far as Hobart with them, where he became surveyor-general. Henry and William Dumaresq came to Sydney to become his private secretary and civil engineer respectively. It is small wonder that Darling's term in office was marked by constant cries of nepotism.Such an association makes this a most desirable copy of a very rare Sydney printing. Written in imitation of "Gulliver's Travels" and "Robinson Crusoe" this romantic and imaginative work soon became very popular. Coleridge, Leigh Hunt, Charles Lamb, Sir Walter Scott and Southey were great admirers of this work. In Southey's "Curse of Kehama," his "Glendoveers "were based upon the "Gawrys." David Claypoole Johnston, engraver (1797-1865) is best known for his annual publication "Scraps" first issued in 1830. He earned the nickname "The American Cruikshank" from his caricatures.         Eigenh. Brief (Fragment).

      O. O., [wohl 1828].. 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to.. Beginn eines längeren Briefes an einen nicht ermittelten Empfänger: "Dear Sir / I am truly grieved that my request should have weighed upon your mind in any way, and I most lament having made it at all if it is inductive of pain to you - so, however much I may regret losing the really valuable transcripts of your unsophisticated mind I would rather forgo that pleasure than cause you to be forced back upon scenes and feelings which are too much for your strength. You cannot think how really refreshing it is to read any thing which is perfectly natural, which bears no marks of what is called composition about it - but is the genuine portrait (if I may be allowed to expression) of feelings and thoughts [...] I am very much occupied - almost too much so - but I believe one must not look back or forwards but do diligently every hour what we are called upon to do, and if we act thus under the eye of God by the grace of Jesus Christ, the past and the future will take care of themselves. 'But who is sufficient for these things?' No one does what they ought; we can all preach but who is there that practises? Not I God knows, I am perhaps just beginning to be a good child as I am going on into second childhood. - You will be sorry to hear that Mr Bury has had but indifferent health and it is a constant source of anxiety to me [...] My work 'Flirtation' has a great many enemies - but I think it tends to good, and good only, so I care not - one must make up one's mind to being shot at when one sets up a target - everybody who runs a literary career will meet with these rebuffs. They are fearful at first, but secure of one's motive they become merely gnats, in a summer's eve. - I have begun a very great book - I do not trust in my own strength to bring it to good issue but in that of Him who inspired me with the idea to undertake it [...]". - Faltspuren mit kl. Einrissen.

        Autograph letter signed ("N. Paganini").

Vienna, 1. VII. 1828. - Large 4to. 1½ pp. with autogr. address on reverse. Extensive and previously unknown letter to his "amico carissimo" Agostino Samengo (1771-1837?) in Trieste, a Genoa-born shipowner and merchant who also practised music and with whom Paganini would lodge when visiting Trieste. In his letter, Paganini praises the qualities of the Graf cembalo which he had sent to Trieste from Vienna on Samengo's behalf, and discusses the modalities and costs of the transport. Twice Paganini refers to an invoice apparently missing from the letter. Salutatelo in mio nome e ricordatemi sensibile a tutti i comuni nostri amici. Le mie dovute congratulazioni all' amabile vostro Ipolito. Favoritemi vostre notizie che mi saranno oltremodo care. Addio amatemi e credetemi [.]". - Traces of folds. Slight edge defects from opening seal (barely touching text); recipient's note on reverse: "risposto li 11 Luglio"; slightly later collection stamp: "L. Samengo Trieste". Not in: R. Grisley (ed.), N. Paganini Epistolario (Milano 2006).

Original publisher's rose boards, expertly rebacked to style with green paper spines and facsimile printed labels. Endpapers heavily foxed, some sporadic foxing throughout. First edition in boards of Say's pioneering work, the first book on American entomology. It was his stated intention "to exemplify the genera and species of the insects of the United States, by means of colored engravings," was hailed upon its appearance as "'the most beautiful publication of the kind' ever issued from an American press" (Weiss & Zeigler, Thomas Say, p.190.) The quality of the plates and the clarity of Say's description won him immediate fame abroad, and he was made a foreign member of the Linnean Society of London.         Album of Grand Tour Drawings in Pencil and with Watercolor Wash of Mostly Italian Sights

1828. Quarter Calf. Paper pastedown on boards.. Very Good. Oblong, 11 by 14.5 cm. 40 numbered leaves, with drawings on most pages. Most of the drawings are finished, with mixed in some intermediary, exploratory or unfinished sketches. And by finished, we would note that the artist was meticulous in the rendering of fine detail. These are the work of either a professional or a very accomplished amateur, and that is taking into account that artistic draftsmanship was an artform far more widely cultivated back when than it is today. The paintings and drawings include ruins of temples and the like, the Vatican, Hadrian's Tomb, the Tiber (Tevere), Tivoli, the countryside, arches, harbor scenes, a view of Florence, Santa Maria della Salute in Venice, the Bridge of Sighs in Venice as well. The predominant spirit of the more finished work is in the vein of Claude Lorrain, with an occasional work that is more a stringent study in perspective. There is an assortment of other imagery besides landscapes and architectural views, including a few costume vignettes that are rendered in full color with watercoloring, and other figurative studies, some quite charming if only intermediate studies. Among the delightful vignettes are drawings of farm animals -- donkeys, a ram, etc. Many of the drawings have brief handwritten captions, although we find the cursive elusive to read. The final four pages are all writing, with inscriptions from friends or contacts filling most of the space. It is from this that we have derived the date of 1828. The drawings may be slightly earlier or later, but their style and general spirit is clearly early nineteenth century. Some foxing and scattered soiling. The binding has heavy-ish wear.

Recherches sur la force du coeur aortique. Th?se

Paris: Didot le jeune, 1828. Poiseuille, Jean Léonard Marie (1799-1869). Recherches sur la force du coeur aortique. Th?se . . . 4to. 45pp. Engraved plate. Paris: Didot le jeune, 1828. 257 x 206 mm. Modern quarter calf, marbled boards. Tiny paper flaws in 2 leaves, a few small spots, but fine. First Edition. ?Poiseuille was the first after Stephen Hales to make any important addition to the knowledge of the physiology of circulation. In his graduation thesis, above, he described a ?hemodynamometer? invented by himself and which he used to repeat some of Hales?s blood-pressure experiments. With his hemomanometer, a mercury manometer, which was a great improvement on the long tube used by Hales, Poiseuille showed that the blood-pressure rises and falls on expiration and inspiration, and measured the degree of arterial dilatation produced by each heart beat? (Garrison-Morton.com 767). The above work was Poiseuille?s doctoral thesis; he would go on to make further important contributions to the study of circulatory hydrodynamics, including ?Poiseuille?s law? regarding the resistance to blood flow in a single vessel.

Origin of the the [sic] new system of manufacture, commonly called 'power-loom weaving', and the purposes for which this system was invented and brought into use, fully explained in a narrative, containing William Radcliffe's struggles through life to remove the cause which has brought this country to its present crisis. Written by himself

Stockport: printed and sold by James Lomax, Advertiser-Office. 1828. 8vo., (2) + 216 + (2)pp., including the final errata leaf, title-page rather soiled and variable soiling elsewhere, contemporary, probably original, red cloth, rebacked with part of the original label retained, the covers generally soiled and worn, entirely uncut. First edition: very scarce. (About 11 libraries have copies: 5 in UK, 5 in US + Eth-Bibliothek in Zurich). Goldsmiths 25500. Kress C.2159. Williams II p.118. William Radcliffe (1761?-1842), a Stockport cotton manufacturer and 'improver of cotton machinery' (ODNB), was closely involved with both the politics and technology of factory modernisation in the early years of the 19th century. Attacked by Luddite rioters in March 1812, when his machinery and furniture were destroyed and his wife injured (resulting in her early death a few weeks later), Radcliffe's business collapsed. His semi-autobiographical Origin of the new system of manufacture> is 'a rambling set of recollections' (ODNB) in which he blamed the 'Foreign Anglo Junto' centred on Manchester for all his troubles. Although not published until 1828, Radcliffe tells the reader that 'the narrative ..... was written in the years 1819 to 1822 inclusive, having been addressed in successive letters to a monthly club, the members of which were power-loom manufacturers; which club I had formed> in 1811 .....'.

Characters in the Grand Fancy Ball Given by the British Ambassador Sir Henry Wellesley, At Vienna, At the Conclusion of the Carnival, 1826; In Thirteen Highly Coloured Plates: With a Description of the Entertainments on That Occasion

London: R. Ackermann, 1828. Second Edition. Quarter Calf. Moire Boards. Very Good. 4to. 24 by 19 cm. Frontis, title, 16 pp. followed by 12 hand-colored plates of fancy masquerade dress. Depicting a ball that in its day was remembered for being especially opulent and over-the-top. The dress was inspired by novels, notably those of Sir Walter Scott and Baron La Motte Fouque. What distinguished this entertainment certainly from the masquerade of more recent times is how the evening was minutely planned so that the theatrical dress was coordinated with the dances and the scheduling of the evening unfolded not unlike a Vaudeville entertainment, but one in which the guests themselves were the willing players, and so there was a blurring of audience and actors/models. Scuffing to the cover. Scattered soiling, light creases to some some leaves, other signs of moderate use. Tissue guards intact.

A young woman, Maria Marten, was shot dead by her lover, William Corder. The two had arranged to meet at the Red Barn, a local landmark, before eloping to Ipswitch. Maria was never heard from again. Corder fled the scene and, although he sent Martin's family letters claiming she was in good health, her body was later discovered buried in the barn after her stepmother spoke of having dreamed about the murder. Corder was tracked down in London, where he had married and started a new life. He was brought back to Suffolk, and after a well-publicized trial, found guilty of murder. He was hanged at Bury St. Edmonds in 1828; a huge crowd witnessed Corder's execution. The story provoked numerous articles in newspapers, and songs and plays. The village where the crime had taken place had become a tourist attraction and the barn was stripped by souvenir hunters.": Wikipedia..

Eigenh. geburtstäglicher Morgengruß mit Bleistiftzeichnung und U.

[Schloss Dornburg/Saale], 28. VIII. 1828.. 1 S. 4to. Wasserzeichen: zweikonturige Antiquaversalien "E & R" (Fragment)..
